Not even 20 minutes since my last note. Erika had to close shop -- the candy was dangerously low. We think we had about 300. They come so fast and steady it is hard to keep track.

Happy Halloween -- boy not even one hour into Trick or Treating and we have had almost 200 kids. The weather is perfect and there is a steady stream of people on the sidewalk. Nice enough to just stay out on the porch. I think we will run out of candy before it's over......

I went to the election office to vote this afternoon around 2 and there was a long line so I ran some errands and just went back at 4 and there was still a long line. Dang. Amanda says they're open tomorrow morning so I may try again. I didn't expect there to be lines in Lincoln. It's a good thing, but still...

Happy Halloween.

I took Mom over this morning after the doc appointment, and there was quite a line then too. So we both decided to take our chances on election day. --Gary

Happy Halloween everybody. Just now here at my office a lady dressed up as a witch came to each of our doors and gave us a piece of candy from a big basket. After she left we were all chuckling about it as we munched our candy, and then someone said, "Hey, who was that anyway?" Silence. Blank faces. Nobody knew who she was. We then realized that in spite of what we'd all told little kids one time or another, we had taken candy from a stranger.... One of our student workers, who arrived late and missed the witch, promised she would close up in a few hours if she's the only one left alive.

I'm sure you've heard the latest about Joe the Plant Plumber -- that he's now campaigning with McCain and Palin? That he now has a press agent? That he's writing a book? And that he's releasing a country-western album? Yep, seems that Joe sings and plays a little gee-tar... Words fail me sometimes....

Donna, I just found another sample ballot -- this one is more compact and looks like a copy of the actual ballot (unlike the ones at the link below). It's a PDF form which should open up when you click here. Let me know if it doesn't work for you.

Just a reminder to everyone to fill your tank before next Tuesday -- the price of gas will start to rise again after the election. :-) The oil companies are doing their best to help McCain, but it's just not working this time, poor babies. I know we're all kind of halfway kidding when we talk about gas prices dropping before elections to help big-oil Republicans, but just a few days ago this was confirmed by someone who ought to know: Bill Clinton. I can't locate the quote just now, but he warned his audience not to be fooled by the lower gas prices and said that they will go up again after the election. He said plainly that oil prices were manipulated, rather than determined by demand. I've never heard anybody that "high up" come right out and say it before.

Oh, also: anyone looking for a Christmas gift idea may want to check this out -- but don't put your orders in til after next Tuesday, because in this case the price will certainly go down. :-)

In what will probably be their last pitch for votes, both McCain and Obama are going to be interviewed (separately) during halftime of the Monday Night Football game (Redskins vs Steelers) -- the night before election day.

But look at this promotional picture -- Obama looks like he's going to go long, while McCain looks like he's holding a baby with wet diapers. Ha! :-)

I just remembered I meant to to follow up on Donna's note of 10/28, about the Halloween sleepover at her house with Tristen and Teghan. Turns out there was no voter fraud at Teghan's school, that we know of. Tristen gave me the details: Teghan's class voted for the presidential candidates, but Tristen pointed out that they used pictures on the ballots as the kids couldn't read the names. Teghan thought she voted for Obama, but later when Tristen showed her a photo of Obama, she frowned and said she didn't think that was the one she picked... "So," said Tristen to me, "I think she might have voted for the Green Party." :-)

And don't worry, Teghan -- last night Rachel Maddow showed a survey of early voters, where the question was "Who did you vote for?" Six percent answered, "I don't know."

Donna

Hey Gary, have you found a sample ballot online yet? I'm thinking I'll vote Friday. Someone in Omaha said they had a 45 minute wait last week when they voted. I wonder if we'll see long lines for voting on Tuesday.

And what's all the talk of Biden being told to keep his talks short and canned?

Sample ballots are here. With a hefty ballot like this, I can see why the wait is long. Some people in our office voted early, on Tuesday. One person had a short wait, the other said the wait was "zero minutes." I really like going to my local polling place and voting on the day of the election, but early voting is starting to look better and better.... Here's the place if you decide to go early. As to Biden, that's all Republican wishful-thinking. I heard one Obama spokesperson comment on that, and he said, "Are you kidding? You can't put a muzzle on Joe Biden." Anyway, I can't imagine anything he could say at this point that would sway the results. --Gary

Happy Birthday, John!!
Amanda
10/29/08
Grandma, if you're up & moving around any & reading this, how are you feeling? Or Gary what can you update? Is there another dr. appt in the horizon, or did I misunderstand?

I'll do a quick udpate as I'm right here, but I'm sure Grandma will be on sooner or later and will comment. Yes, she's up and around. I was over there yesterday afternoon to make the T&t switch with Ryan, and later Donna and I were both there for supper (take-out from Boston Market) and Keith Olbermann. Grandma was vertical the whole time. :-) She started a new round of antibiotics yesterday, and a followup doctor's appointment is on for Friday morning. I'm sure there's some leftover tiredness and whatnot, but she is rapidly approaching back-to-normal. --Gary

We're still having fun at my office today, but it's kind of a strange day. Around 11 o'clock, the power went off. At first we thought it was just our building, so Tristen and Teghan and I thought we'd go over to the cafeteria for an early lunch. But when we got outside, we talked to students who said the power was off everywhere on campus. So we decided to get off campus and go to the capitol. Which was kind of a letdown as they only allow viewing from one of the four sides now. Sheesh. We drove back to the campus, and found the power was on when we got back -- turned out to be a blown LES transformer. Someone said they saw smoke coming up through a manhole cover over near Oldfather Hall.

We started off to the cafeteria, but from a block away saw a line stretching out back through the doors and out onto the street. Apparently everybody's schedules got messed up today!

So: back to the car, and we went to Arby's for lunch. Then back here, where we've been ever since -- and will be for a few more hours.

Tristen: Me and Teghan are having lots of fun playing with paper. I pretend like I'm filing paper. Teghan is in her own world.

Tristen & Teghan
10/28/08
Teghan: Good.
Tristen: Awesome.
Tristen: I'm playing Snowball Run.
Teghan: I'm sorting papers, and making clothes for the doll.
Amanda
10/28/08
Hey T & t, how's the day at the office so far?
Donna
10/28/08
Hi Karen, the Halloween party was a lot of fun. They both wore their costumes--Tristen was a nerd and Teghan was Cleopatra. We watched Hocus Pocus and they got out some fabric and got busy designing clothes and purses. Teghan needed to tape her fabric to walls and doors because it was easier to cut the fabric which then became a tent for her. Oh and Teghan brought a bunch of books and told me that she now knows how to read so she read us a story. She's a very good reader! Tristen was telling me about the election they held at school where they got to read about McCain and Obama and then voted. I asked her who she voted for and she said, 'I'm a democrat, I voted for Obama!' And then Teghan says 'Well I meant to vote for Obama,' so I don't know what that's about, there may have been some voter fraud at her school. ;-)

Hey, Obama fans: Here's a nice collection of Obama photos, taken by a photojournalist named Callie Shell who has been following and photographing Obama for nearly three years now. The photos are great and the captions are too -- very inspiring! (When you get to the bottom of the page, keep clicking on "Show More Images" to see them all.)

Another easy day for me -- got out at one for conferences. Erika has the whole day off -- well almost. She is busy putting the finishing touches on her debate. She has her first tourney this afternoon. Got gas this afternoon, what a pleasant surprise, it was $2.09. Brent went out to the truck this morning and it was dead. So I'll have to pick him up this afternoon and see about getting a new battery. It's to get cold tonight -- predicting a low of 15! Think I'll have to bring in some firewood. Mom -- are you feeling better today? T & t (and Donna) how was the halloween party?

Boy, the SNL lawyers are working overtime! They pulled that sketch from YouTube before some of you got to see it. So try this link:

That was the best SNL clip yet!
Gary
10/24/08
If you missed Thursday night's SNL (I did, dang it!), you can see the opening sketch here. Not only Tina Fey this time, but Will Ferrell returns to do Bush. Chris Matthews called this bit one of the best political satires he's ever seen because it was so on the money.

Glad to hear that Mom is beginning to recover. Thanks for the update. Amanda -- I'm sure Brent will pass on the tickets. Not too interested in NE football yet. Didn't even listen to last weeks game.

Football tickets anyone? Everyones selling theirs for tomorrow, don't know what the deal is. Brent??

Oops, I was just now doing some website housekeeping and I noticed something weird. The message that Karen sent on the 23rd arrived twice, and one of them was truncated. And of course that's the one I used.... I didn't see the other one til later, and I figured they were identical. For some unknown reason email does sometimes get duplicated like that. Anyway, scroll down to see the full restored message. Sorry about that, Karen!

Just back from sickbay (10 am), and here's the update: Grandma looked much better this morning. Didn't sleep much last night, but some food is staying down -- the smoothie, some oatmeal this morning. The lower back pain is a lot less, she said, though she still moves with some stiffness. The doc took a blood sample and said the bacteria are "still raging," but her white blood cell count is higher so the antibiotics are starting to work. The doc said by the end of the course of antibiotics (five more days) everything should be completely back to normal. Grandma goes back in first thing Monday for another check-up just to make sure things are still on track. So Grandma isn't doing cartwheels in the yard yet, but I expect she will be within a few more days.

P.S. Karen, since I was involved, I will answer your question about Tristen as she may not have seen this. The pocket protector is for her nerd Halloween costume. Last time I spoke with Teghan, she hadn't settled on a costume yet, so I don't know what she's going as. I will see them both on Tuesday, when they're going to spend the day in my office again. That'll be fun!

10/23/08
Hey everybody!!! Hey Grandma, heard a few days ago that you weren't feeling good and now it sounds like you're better! Sure hope so! Fall break is coming up for me, and Tristen and Teghan too! Just after this friday, well tomorrow!! Then we get a whole week off! Amanda, so did Teghan get her little white pumpkin, or did you get her mind off of that one? But that is all of the news I have to offer!! Talk to you all later!!!! Hope you have a good fall, um whatever day that is!!
Gary
10/23/08
I just now saw Grandma, so here's the latest: She is much improved over yesterday. I took her a smoothie (banana -- extra bland -- with "daily blend" vitamins and minerals), and she said it tasted pretty good. She was sitting up when I got there, and got up and walked around a few times while I was there. Again, that's different than yesterday! Still some pain in the lower back, but the general stiffness everywhere was diminishing. Back to the doc first thing tomorrow morning, so there will be another progress report then. Also, she wanted to say thanks again to Sean who offered to bring her lunch -- she just wasn't in the mood to eat then, Sean!
Karen
10/23/08
Just talked to Mom, sounded a little rough. Hope it goes better. Nice to know that everyone in Lincoln is looking in on her. I have a nice four day week-end. Teachers all left for Des Moines early this morning. I spent most of the day christmas shopping. Got a few things. Then picked up Brent for a delicious lunch at Applebees. Emily is over for the afternoon (laundry day). Erika was home from school yesterday. She got her flu shot Monday night and she was dragging so she slept in yesterday. Rain, rain and more rain for the last two days. We even set a record, 3 1/2 inches in one day!! Glad it wasn't snow -- had our first fire for the season last night, felt good. Tristen are you going as a nerd for Halloween this year, or is it for school? St Pauls is doing Red Ribbon week next week and we are supposed to dress weird each day too (I of course will not). Oh, one more thing -- did anyone hear (or care) Sarah Palin is coming to SC on Saturday -- she is having a Victory speech at Erika's high school. Tickets are going fast -- Brent offered to go to the headquarters and get me a sign that read Democrats for McCain -- but he needn't bother......

Feel better Mom

I'm willing to bet that they have lots of those signs available... :-) --Gary

Gary
10/23/08
Hey, I know you all want to know how Grandma is doing, so here is a report (without her permission, so I hope she doesn't mind!): The flu-like thing she got last week (sore and achey muscles, tiredness) turned out to be a kidney infection. Her doc told her, "You are FULL of bacteria!" So yesterday she started a round of antibiotics. It seems a side effect is nausea, so today she's having trouble keeping food down. She told me she had some crackers a little while ago, and so far, so good! I asked her if anything sounded good, and we settled on a bland ("nothing with flavor!" she said) but fortified smoothie from Juice Stop -- which I'll get to her later today. Then tomorrow a follow-up appointment with the doc, to check on the progress of the antibiotics. The doc said yesterday if her current antibiotics weren't doing what they should, another kind would be prescribed; so that may be happening. So she's stiff and sore and tired and getting in a lot of couch-time, but doing ok.
Gary
10/23/08
Now here is a cool Obama ad. Funny! :-)

Amanda
10/23/08
Tristen has dance at the time Teghan's friends are going so she's gonna skip it. She's ok with it though, it's one of those she secretly wants to watch, but doesn't want people to know. :-) the girls will be dressing up, excited for it. Teghan's gonna get a lot of use out her costume(s) this year. Which reminds me Gary, since you located it, I'll get the pocket protector, Office Depot is easy for me, unlike U bookstore.

I just talked to gma, she's having a rough day! Dang it!

Grandma has another doc appointment tomorrow morning, to check on the progress of these antibiotics. If they aren't doing the job, another type will be prescribed. The pocket protectors are 99 cents at Office Depot. --Gary

Donna
10/23/08
I thought Tristen was going to High School Musical too. Did you know someone from Lincoln is in the movie? Teghan must be soooo excited for tomorrow, two of her favorite things.

Are the girls going to dress up for the slumber party?

Txting is 2 hard 4 me 2 read...

Amanda
10/23/08
Thanks Gary. What's up with they text type typing for you, you never do that! Are you teasing me for doing it in the preceeding paragraph? I'm checking & typing the newsletter from my cell phone, it just feels natural to type shorthand on here!

Teasing, yes. I didn't realize you were doing it from your cellphone, so I'll cut you some slack. :-) --Gary

10/23/08
Gary, did u ever get a chance to look for a pocket protector for nerdy Tristen? I'm still trying to track down suspenders. Harder to find than u'd think! Teghan has pajama day tomorrow at school, since they reached their goal for fundraising. 1st grade sold the most so they also get a popcorn party. She missed last year with a nasty ear infection, so this year she is really excited for it! Then tomorrow night im taking her to the High School Musical 3 movie that opens that day. One friend got a party room at The Grand. Should be fun for her. Then a halloween slumber party for both T's saturday nite with Donna. Then they're off school all next week! Grandma hope u're feeling a little better today, we're thinking of you! Glad u stopped u're stubbornness and went to the dr.

Yes, I found pocket protectors at Office Depot (across the street from Best Buy). U might be surprised to learn that u won't find them at the U of N bookstore any more -- a "discontinued item," the guy called them. I can get 1 2 u this weekend, or next 2sday at the latest when Tristen and Teghan spend the day at my office again. --Gary

Donna
10/22/08
This is interesting... People are getting mad.
Donna
10/21/08
This gives me chills...

Well, what does it matter, those protesters aren't "real Americans" anyway. Which I'm sure is what Palin said herself... If anyone has 15 minutes to spare, here's a great Jon Stewart video from last night's Daily Show on that very subject -- Palin and Bachmann and Pfotenhauer talking about "real Americans" as differentiated from the rest of us. It's worth your time! --Gary

Amanda
10/20/08
Uh, what??????????????

Yow. I had to check the date, hoping it was an old story. It isn't.... --Gary

Gary
10/20/08
And yet one more thing. Hillary Clinton has a busy day tomorrow. After her appearance in Omaha, she is going up to Minneapolis to campaign for Al Franken. :-) A free event starting at 4:30 at the McNamara Alumni Center (200 Oak Street Southeast) in Minneapolis.
Gary
10/20/08
The latest thinking on the right-wing sites (make that "thinking," in quotes) is that those pictures from St. Louis were photoshopped to make the crowd look bigger.... No theories, though, on why the Italian press would go to that trouble. :-)

I concur about the secret service. I know they know what they're doing, but when I see the hateful crowds that McCain and Palin are stirring up, I get nervous too. And not just those two: Talk-show host and drug addict Rush Limbaugh is going out-and-out racist on his show. MSNBC just played a clip of his show today, where Limbaugh says (I paraphrase): "The media is all a-twitter about how they think I said Powell made his endorsement based only on race. So let me say it loud and clear: [cupping his hands around his mouth and yelling] Powell's endorsement was based ONLY on race!"

Despite the weird coincidences (that go beyond merely his name), it now appears that "Joe the Plumber" is not directly related to Charles Keating of Keating 5 fame. But all the other stuff is accurate. Even the press talking heads say he "isn't what he claims to be" when his name comes up. McCain has dropped references to him. Only Sarah Palin continues to make a big deal about Joe the Plumber. She never seems to get the word....

Beautiful day on campus today. The leaves have all turned, pretty much, but only a few are falling off. It's too warm to wear a jacket, but too chilly not to. Perfect fall weather. Classes are on break today, so the streets and hallways are empty.

Oh hey, I just remembered one other thing. You may have heard recently that William Ayers (yes, that one) was scheduled to speak here on the campus, in mid-November. I and a few others in my office were planning on attending. Despite whatever else you may have heard of him, he is a respected figure in the world of education. (Also, he was never prosecuted for his involvement with the Weather Underground, he never said he wished they had "bombed more" -- he said he wished they had "done more," and he is not "unrepentant" -- he said he regrets very much the things that group did.) Anyway, Ayers was scheduled to speak here until a few days ago. The University cancelled him because they had received death threats and bomb threats and felt they couldn't guarantee the safety of anyone who attended. Good work, McCain & Palin!

P.S. I didn't make it clear that Ayers was invited not to speak about "current events," but about education only. He was booked to speak long before McCain made his name a household word.

Donna
10/20/08
Unbelievable that Obama draws a crowd of 150,000 and we have to hear about it from Italy. And yet what is making news is Obama's involvement with Acorn's voter registration fraud. Just one of those pictures of him talking to that huge--peaceful--crowd would sure send a message of just how much more popular he is than McCain, who can't get a crowd of more than 10,000. But McCain does 'love being the underdog.'

I do wish Obama had more secret service around him. That makes me nervous. Pretty sure the story goes that Powell wouldn't run for president because his wife feared assassination and he promised her he wouldn't run.

I heard on the news this morning that Qwest doors will open at 11:30 tomorrow but no word on when Hillary will speak. That could be a long wait. I hope I'll get to at least see the motorcade drive by on their way to and from the airport.

Joe the plumber is a plant. Any confirmation yet on his being related to Keating?

Gary
10/19/08
Good to hear from you, Livy. I was wondering where you've been keeping yourself! :-)

Some cool photos here of Obama's huge rally yesterday in St. Louis, from the Italian news site la Repubblica. I would have directed you to an American site for the pictures, but I couldn't find one. CNN, MSNBC, ABC, etc -- while they cover, live, every speech that Sarah Palin makes (which is to say, the same speech over and over), they scarcely mentioned this crowd of 150,000 people who heard Obama speak yesterday.

Hey everybody!! Haven't been on here in a while! Last night Linz, Matt and I went to a Panic! At the Disco concert and had lots of fun! Took lots of pictures, and tons of videos of the songs of course! First we ate at BW3's with my parents, then got to the concert a little after 6:30, and it started at 7. It's one of those Rock Band Live concerts, so the game Rock Band was in on it. They have random people who know how to play that game go up to the stage and well, play! You can play like the drums, sing, or play guitar, and you play actual songs and sing along to them. Anyways, the concert was awesome! The Plain White T's, The Cab, and Dashboard Confessional opened up for Panic! At the Disco. The whole concert was AWESOME!!! Then we went over to Amanda's and sat around a warm but dangerous fire! Just kidding, the embers weren't bad, it was fun! But that is all the new news I have to offer, so I will talk to you all later!

Here's an eloquent and off-the-cuff statement by Colin Powell, shortly after he endorsed Obama this morning. He touches on William Ayers, Michele Bachmann, "redistribution of wealth," and several other recent Repub talking points. Powell has had a distinguished career, with only one major blot on it: Appearing before the U.N. Assembly and making the case in favor of the war in Iraq using fraudulent information. His endorsement won't mean much to the Democrats who are already on board with Obama, but will certainly sway some Republicans and undecideds (especially those with military connections), and will help rehabilitate Powell's legacy.

Busy around here this week-end. Erika went to the football game last night, and just now left for her friends house. She and about 6 girls are going to go out to eat and then to the dance. She looked very nice, but didn't allow any cameras. This afternoon we all went to the Briar Cliff football game (well half of it). It was a chilly day, but we bundled up and sat through a rather boring first half. Then the big half time show started, with the BC Dance Squad. Emily did a great job, but we were all frozen and ready to leave as soon as she was finished. Fortunately I planned ahead and had a pot of chili ready when we got home. I totally missed the last debate, had intended to watch it. Been fighting a cold all week, and Wed I got my flu shot. Between the two I was wasted and passed out before 8 that night. Marsha -- cool sighting -- but the best part to me was the cheesecake -- yummy! Looking forward to short work week, only three days for me. Hoping to get some christmas shopping started.

Heads-up to Donna (and anyone else in Omaha next Tuesday): Hillary Clinton will be in town, at the Qwest Center -- giving the keynote speech at a luncheon, free and open to the public. More here.

Last Saturday Anna and I went to coffee at a little neighborhood coffee shop we like. I got in line (for the amazing raspberry coffeecake and Mississippi Mud coffee) and saw a really familiar man, but I couldn't place him. I looked across the table and saw his wife, Francis McDormand (Marge from Fargo). Anna said, hey it's that actress from "Burn After Reading"! So, we had breakfast with the Cohen brothers and Francis McDormand (just not at the same table or talking with them.....) Cool sighting.

One more quick note on the debate. I liked David Gergen's appraisal of McCain's performance: "It looked like a seminar on anger management." :-)
Gary
10/16/08
Update on "Joe the Plumber": Reporters have already learned that 1) he's not a licensed plumber, and 2) he's not a registered voter. Hmmmmm.

Update update: He also for a time lived in Arizona, which is of course McCain's state. I'm just sayin'....

Update update update: And now, after many people checked the records looking for his voter registration and didn't find it, it suddenly appears there! Nothing odd about that, is there? Oh also, he's doesn't make $250,000 a year (as McCain said he did), and he's not a small business owner (as McCain said he was).

Update update update update: And the plumber he works for also is unlicensed. Plus, Joe the Plumber himself owes back taxes....

Update x 5: And OMG, "Joe the Plumber" is related to Charles Keating -- of the Keating 5.... (That one is almost too much, even in this crazy election. I'll wait til this is verified. But good grief...!)

Donna
10/16/08
I thought last nights debate was the best one. I hadn't really noticed McCain's reaction. This was, if you remember from the last debate, the question McCain said Obama didn't answer and then republican McCain supporter Brokaw laughed about. I've played this clip a few times already. BTW, what is it they say about someone that blinks a lot? Isn't that a sign of dishonesty? It seems like I've heard that before. Maybe he just has dry contacts. I got tired of them talking to Joe the plumber.

I think the blinking and the weird bright eyes were due to some sort of ...uh, stimulant. And to continue my conspiracy theories, I wouldn't be at all surprised if "Joe the Plumber" was a plant of some sort. He's all over the news shows this morning including, God help us, a press conference outside his home -- in which he recited all the McCain talking points. Uh-huh. Meanwhile, the Republicans -- who have already stolen two national elections -- are asking the Supreme Court to get involved with their charges of Democratic voter fraud in Ohio.... Can't make this stuff up! --Gary

Gary
10/15/08
Excellent debate, President Obama. And thanks to Sen. McCain for showing up. :-) After 49 debates (no kidding, 49 in the past two years!), they're all done. And now McCain will have a national audience only one more time -- his concession speech the evening of November 4.

My favorite moment: McCain's deer-in-the-headlights look when he finally got Obama to answer his dreaded "how much is the penalty" question:

In closing, the words of Keith Olbermann: "I don't know about you, but I'm voting for this Joe the Plumber guy!"

Gary
10/15/08
What is with this guy?? Looks like Bush has a new BFF, after Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi arrived recently for a visit. I hope Tony Blair or the Saudis don't see these pictures -- they will be soooo jealous!

Final debate tonight! Interesting strategies already emerging on this. McCain was quoted on Olberman last night (I paraphrase): "Oh, so Senator Obama is wondering why I haven't brought up the Ayers thing to his face. Well, I'll show him! I will bring it up!" In other words, Obama has dared him to do something, and McCain is going to go right ahead and do it. In spite of the fact (which Obama knows well) that every time McCain mentions Ayers, his poll numbers go down. McCain has painted himself into a corner, again: Either he comes out swinging about Ayers and such (which makes him look nasty and desperate to the undecideds), or he plays nice and doesn't mention it (which will infuriate his base). All Obama has to do, as usual, is stay poised and above it.

Note to Donna: You were wondering about Sarah Palin's polar bear pin that she has been so ostentatiously wearing recently, in light of the fact that she is fighting the attempt to have them declared an endangered species, and in light of the fact she denies global warming which is destroying the bears' habitat. Anyway, someone said she's wearing the polar bear pin to show people what they used to look like....

Wow, the Republican reporters are getting more and more desperate to pump up their candidates. Mrs. Alan Greenspan (which is to say, Andrea Mitchell of NBC) just now called Sarah Palin "the best speaker of the four candidates." Wow. I guess it is possible Mrs. Greenspan has never heard Obama speak. Or Biden. Or McCain....

Frosty morning today -- Brent brought the plants in last night. I think it was a good idea. The leaves are changing and falling fast. Metcalfs -- so sorry to hear about Sasha -- it is always hard to lose a loved pet. Gary -- I heard a rumor that you are off this week--how nice! I get a long four-day week-end next week. Looking forward to that. Emily and Erika both have homecoming this week. Erika is going out to dinner and then the dance with a bunch of her friends. Emily has her first performance for the dance team at the halftime of Saturdays game. Brent and I are planning to go to see her.

Yes, I am taking this week off. Nice to do nothing! :-) --Gary

Heavy rain the entire commute to work this morning. Yuck. But gas in Omaha was at $2.77. It was $2.95 last Thursday.

At least it's not snow yet! I spoke with two people over the weekend -- one in Nevada and one in Colorado -- who had snow on the ground. --Gary

Any Keith Olberman fans who wondered what guest-host David Schuster meant on Friday with his mysterious words ("We hope Keith will be back on Monday"), here's the answer: Keith is recovering from strep-throat.

Ah, it is nice that one can always depend on the mainstream media for accurate and unbiased reporting.... Both CNN and MSNBC agree that Palin went to the hockey game in Philadelphia last night. Okay. But CNN says she was met with "90 seconds of sustained booing" while MSNBC says she heard "mostly cheers" and "polite applause." So there ya go!

Update: A few hours later, I see now that MSNBC has changed their headline from "mostly cheers" to "boos and cheers," though the article itself still reads "polite applause."

I heard Sasha was sick, but I was hoping she'd be okay. That is really sad news. Sasha was such a sweet dog. I'm really sorry.

Been thinking of the Metcalfs all morning, I know they are having a bad day. I'm so sorry that you lost Sasha, she was really one of the family. But, today, she and Penny have no doubt hooked up and are running rings around each other, and having a great time without hurting one little bit!

In response to the McCain campaign referring to Obama as a "guy of the street" (which to their pathetic followers is obviously code for "black"), Joe Klein of Time Magazine wrote this. Kinda says it all:
Better to be "a guy of the street" than a guy of the gutter.

But seriously, folks, I'm beginning to worry about the level of craziness on the Republican side, the over-the-top, stampede-the-crowd statements by everyone from McCain on down, the vehemence of the crowds that McCain and Palin are drawing with people shouting "Kill him" and "He's a terrorist" and "Off with his head."

Watch the tape of the guy screaming, "He's a terrorist!" McCain seems to shudder at that, he rolls his eyes... and I thought for a moment he'd admonish the man. But he didn't. And now he's selling the Ayres non-story full-time. Yes, yes, it's all he has. True enough: he no longer has his honor. But we are on the edge of some real serious craziness here and it would be nice if McCain did the right thing and told his more bloodthirsty supporters to go home and take a cold shower. But McCain hasn't done the right thing all year. His campaign is appalling, as the New York Times editorial board said today--and more, it is a national disgrace.

Ooops, just noticed I forgot to change the front page! Now fixed!

Gary, I am enjoying the fall leaf web cams! Trees are beautiful along the Mississippi River banks. Also enjoyed the Metcalf update. We are all doing well, John is feeling well today, Zach is over here making some chicken quesidillas, Anna is busy with school, work, and her new apt. with Zach. Sam is also busy with work and doing well. Bachman's put up Christmas trees and decorations already, boy, not even Halloween. Planning to go to the History Center this weekend for a special showing of Treasures of the Vatican including some things from daVinci and other items never removed from Rome before. Got to see the Huskers on tv on Saturday night, well, the first half anyway, they did ok for playing a #3 ranked team (but really, we should be #1, 2 or 3). Maybe next year. It was very nice to see Pelini on the sidelines. Gophers are 4 and 1, they have only lost to Ohio State so far. Mark is really keeping busy with the Marching Band, hope we get to a game to see him, he was filming an episode of Extreme Home Makeovers in Albert Lea yesterday, they wanted the University of MN marching band to be a part of the show. Hey Mom, bet that deck is looking good!

I see that Sarah Palin was in Omaha yesterday. As someone on one of the talk shows said this morning, "If you're a Republican candidate and you are chasing votes in Nebraska, it's basically over." Amen to that. :-)

So who's looking forward to the 8 oclock game? Not me! I wonder if I can stay awake for it! We didn't look at floats Thursday night, Teghan wanted to go to Kahoa skate night, so Tristen was at dance, Teghan was there. So, we're going to try to go this afternoon. Dumb? Yea, probably...

Not much else new. Just very busy with school & activities back in full force. We are at the dance studio 6 days a week. It's become somewhat of a second home for Tristen, and she's loving every minute of it. She's doing so well, and doing GREAT in middle school. She's even hanging in there with band, loves her teacher this year. She did have a jerky 7th grader boy situation, but we pumped her back up. He was just your typical idiot boy (sorry guys...) who stepped on her shoe & kicked it & then laughed with a whole bunch of other boys. She was pretty upset. I told her first through gritted teeth, hey, you need to start spreading the rumor that your mom works with lots of cops. Then I told her to remember, people like that probably get treated real crappy at home, so they have to treat others like crap to make themselves feel better. I think hearing that made her feel better. She told me she was nervous to see him again & I said, no don't be, just be practicing your "I could kill you with this glare" stare. I told her I had perfected the look in my day... But other than that, life seems groovy for her.

Teghan too. She is LOVING 1st grade. She loves her teacher, Mrs. Woodward. She makes her a new picture or book or something everyday. She is doing math & is quite good at it. She also is doing phenomenal reading. She's doing dance & is so good at it anymore. She also started Girl Scouts two weeks ago. There's already 9 girls in her troop. One of the leaders is the mom of a new friend who she loves, Nadia. Teghan also moved beds last night. She's on the top bunk now! She figured she was ready, though a little nervous for falling off. She won't. Well I assume she won't.

Ryan's on the night shift now & we basically love it. He works a lot less hours in the week, he has every other weekend off (really a 3 1/2 day weekend). We've already had 2 fun weekends. The first weekend he was off we went to the New Mexico State game, which was great. Then last weekend when he was off him & I went to two parties, one for my boss, going away party at her house & then the other was a housewarming party for my hairdresser/our friends. They both were out in the Ceresco/Valpraiso area. The only downside to the nights is he goes in at 8, so he leaves the house by 7:30, so on nights he goes to work it's like OK, what do we do now... And then the weekends where he works (like right now) we have to stay kind of quiet in the house while he sleeps during the day. And he doesn't get overtime on his checks, which he's gotten nearly every check for the last 2 years. But, he also worked mad, crazy hours, and that's no more..

Anyway, enough about us. I was just going to write a little since it's all Gary's political blog, then I got carried away! (BTW, have of course been watching all the debates & both our radios are constantly dialed into XM 130 POTUS, all politics all the time til the election, but Gary's pretty much got the commentary taken care of....)

Ha! Another goof-up from the McCain team. Some of you may have seen the flap that occurred on the day of the first Obama-McCain debate, when the Washington Post ran this ad on the day of the debate -- before the debate occurred. Did the McCain people mistakenly tell the site to run it on the wrong day, or did the site mistakenly run it on the wrong day? Who knows?

Well, they've done it again, only worse. This time they got the day right, running it after the debate took place. But they forgot one little detail. Take a look. They forgot to insert the name of the "famous person" who supposedly said their made-up quote. Pathetic! :-)

So, did all of Palin's winking and flirting and folksiness pay off? Not so much. The Obama landslide which I am predicting is still scheduled for November 4. :-)

All my conspiracy theories about earpieces and electronic devices and whatnot turned out to be over the top. She unexpectedly went with the low-tech approach and just read everything from a stack of 3x5 cards in front of her. You do have to give her credit: She said right up front that she wanted to talk directly to the American people, so she may not always answer whatever question she was asked. And after that, her answers sounded like this: "Let me answer your question about tax reform by discussing energy," and then reading card A-12.

And when she said she thought the powers of the Vice-Presidency should be expanded beyond even the Dick Cheney level...wow!

The good news is, in 33 days she gets on the plane to Juneau and we won't hear from her again -- until 2012, when she runs for President...

I plan to be watching the debate. Hope it goes better than the last one. I was just getting into it, when I saw a bat in the hallway. Never did finish it. About to take Erika to dance class. Emily is over doing her laundry. She has had mid-terms this week, and been getting up for a 6 am dance practice two times this week. She is looking a bit tired. Beautiful fall days, I think I would agree with just about every month on your list Gary.

At the last minute I switched #11 and #12. Overall, I'm pretty sure I enjoy January more than August. Hope your evening is bat-free! --Gary

Only 4+ hours to the big debate tonight. Everybody ready? Sarah Palin is, I think. She arrived in St. Louis this afternoon not only wearing her hair down over her ears (to hide an earpiece?) but also with a big bandage on her right palm from a "jogging accident" (to hide notes or even an electronic receiver of some sort?). What a joke. I hope the Biden people bring some kind of radio-jammer with them so all she hears is static.... And by the way, why can none of these Republicans stay upright? They're always falling and bruising themselves. Bush alone has fallen down half a dozen times in the past eight years, but of course he's a drunk.

Amanda, the homecoming displays are pretty far along, though not all finished. Even so, it's just as much fun to drive through and watch the students working on them -- as some of them will be, late into the night.

Enjoy the debate tonight, everyone!

Even though Homer Simpson has complained about the "lousy Democrats" and the "liberal media" in the past, it looks like he's going to cross the line this year and vote Obama:

(This apparently is a sneak peek at the upcoming Halloween episode.)

Hey, I was just going to write about that when your newsletter item arrived. Yes, the homecoming displays are going up as we speak -- lots of activity at all the fraternity/sorority houses right now. The theme this year is "Journey Through the Decades." In years past there has been a webpage somewhere that tracks their construction progress with photos, but I haven't found it yet. When/If I do, I'll put a link here.

At the moment it's all just scaffolding and framework. (A couple of them very large -- two or three stories high.) But by tomorrow night they should all be very far along. And they all have to be done by Friday night, of course.

Here'a a page on the UNL site with the story, but the photos are all from previous years. (Hey, while you're on this page, scroll down to the "trayless dining hall" story and show the photo to Tristen and Teghan. They were impressed with this conveyor belt that took away our dirty dishes. :-)

Gary, are there a lot of homecoming floats/decorations out yet? Let me know what you see by tomorrow afternoon. We didn't get down there last year or the year before & would like to this year. Thursday nite is when we were thinking we'd be able to get there.
