Erika is doing a bit better -- she is one TOUGH kid!! It only took about 45 minutes -- went back to see her and she was awake and pretty alert. She wasn't goofy or funny, just very quiet. The doctor came in a little later to check on her -- told me to be sure and give her pain med ASAP. Apparently she had very tough teeth and he said they were hard to get out and she would be sore for a couple of days. Then we get home and about an hour later she is starting to talk again, tells me that she came awake before they were done!!! She remembers them talking and putting the stitches in!!! OUCH!!!

She is still on the couch, eating some jello and watching an old Harry Potter movie, hasn't even taken a nap! I am very impressed.

Feel better Erika! Remember, socks with ice, tied old fashioned tooth ache style. And, did you look fat? Did you look fat?

Well Erika is now without her wisdom teeth. Took her in at 8 this morning. Home on the couch now, and not feeling too perky.

Oops, I just noticed I ran the wrong front page today. I had a couple of pages made up ahead of time, and by mistake I plugged in the August 1 page for today. So "Happy Anniversary" to Brent & Karen, a day early! :-) I'll run today's page tomorrow... I mean, yesterday's page tomorrow... or whatever.

Also, while I have the stage, here's a little note on yesterday's crawl -- which was "On this date in 1954, Elvis Presley performed in public for the first time." Presley was performing with two friends for some gathering at a public park. The newspaper announcement got his name wrong: "Ellis Presley." Elvis later said he was so nervous up on stage that his legs shook. The crowd thought it was part of the act and loved it, and started screaming. Between numbers he ran backstage and asked somebody, "What did I do??" They said, "I don't know, but keep doing it!"

Glad to hear about the yucca remedy Gary, it's great to find something so effective. Are you driving a new(er) car yet? Teghan, sljepsdvc gropnkdlanfkltjuriogt yosa;jfleus.dddd!!! Zach and Anna will be moving into their new apartment on September 1. Both are pretty excited about the new place, nice neighborhood a block or two from Lake Harriet.

Still driving the rental car, but a new(er) one could happen any day now. --Gary

Didn't hear about Rove, no. I wish they had succeeded. Those citizens are showing more backbone than our Congress -- they issued a subpoena for Rove, which he laughed at, so they're timidly letting this criminal walk around free. I did hear that a magazine in Sweden (? or someplace in Europe) offered something like $5000 to the person or persons who successfully performed a citizen's arrest on Condoleeza Rice when she was over there recently. Sadly for justice, that didn't happen either.

Car search looks good. Paul informed me he has found two or three candidates, and is checking one of them out today. This just might happen fairly quickly!

7/28/08
Gary, so glad to hear that the Yucca is working for you. I can't really take the credit for it -- just passed along an article I read from a magazine (which came from Donna). Hey, did you hear the news about Karl Rove? He was in Des Moines and some people tried a citizens arrest? Thought you would enjoy the story, several of them on the internet. How is the car search going? Hot and very humid here again. I think Emily and Erika are going to head to the pool later. Erika had a change of plans and will be getting her wisdom teeth out on this Thursday. She and I just went to the store and stocked up on lots of pudding, jello and ice cream.

Gary, I passed on your yucca idea to my mother in law, who suffers from very bad arthritis. One question, where do you get it? Oh, two actually, is it a pill, or cream or what?

We had a yucca plant in our backyard in Texas. It was huge & dangerous. It was also very dense & we think mice were living in it. We tore it out almost immediately after we moved in. It took Ryan all weekend to get it out.

You can get it in health-food stores and organic groceries and such-like. It got mine at Open Harvest, here in Lincoln (on South Street between 16th and 17th). I looked for it at Walgreens but didn't find it. (But I didn't ask anyone for help, so maybe they have some tucked away somewhere.) It comes in capsule form -- take two or three at a time, twice a day. And the best part is, it's cheap compared to other arthritis medicines: Nine bucks for 100 capsules, which comes out to less than $20 a month. I would have been happy to pay much more than that to feel this much relief. Hope it works for her! --Gary

Attention fellow knee-pain sufferers: I'd like to let you know about something that has been helping me and may help you. After I injured my knee a few years ago, the MRI revealed that I also had a bit of arthritis -- so even after the surgery last year, I continued to have some pain in my knee. I tried several different over-the-counter arthritis medicines and pain relievers, but nothing reliably helped. Then a few weeks ago, Karen told me about an article she'd read that suggested yucca extract (yucca is cactus, basically) as an arthritis treatment. Apparently native Americans in the southwest have been using this for a long time for joint pain; and it has since been shown to be effective also with chronic headaches, digestive problems, and lowering cholesterol. So I tried it, and began to feel less pain within a day. Now, after about two weeks, my knee-pain has been dramatically reduced. Only an occasional twinge now. And I understand yucca has a cumulative effect, so it has more of an effect over time. It's completely organic, so shouldn't conflict with any other medications you may be taking. I have noticed a few readers of this page sometimes wince when getting up from their chairs, so I know other painful knees are out there. So give this a try. Thank you, Karen!

Bad hot day today, they are predicting -- so hydrate, everyone! :-)

After 33 years, Roger Ebert is officially leaving "At the Movies," the movie-review show he began with Gene Siskel. Ebert has written a short piece looking back at the show for his newspaper column, which is online here and worth a read if you were ever a fan of the show. Ebert also included two videos of outtakes that are hilarious (though their language is a bit unrestrained if you are watching them at work or something). Hope you like!

I'm good to go with Teghan for tomorrow, Amanda. Hope your car woes are better today, Gary. Even a rattletrap that runs is better than one that won't! Not a bad day outside. Sam, the hydrangea plant has lots of new leaves, I was so excited to see them today. How are you doing, John? Feeling better, I hope. Karen, are you getting back on track? Enough storms for the rest of the summer.
Amanda
7/24/08
Well, best of luck to you Gary. I know you don't drive much being that you live close to work, but you still need & deserve a/c & radio & working windows!

Grandma, thanks for keeping the girls this morning! Tomorrow, Friday can Teghan come from 10-noonish? Just Teghan, and just for that short of time. My mom will drop her off & then Donna is going to pick her up for an afternoon at her house. I was going to use Deedee as Tristen & Livy might go swimming (weather permitting) but Deedee is closed as her brother in law passed away.

Gary
7/24/08
Yup, A/C. And on the way home I stopped at a drive-through and experienced the luxury of a driver's-side window that actually rolled down. Woo-hoo! :-) Other than that, though, the car is a noisy little rattletrap that in some ways is in worse shape than my car.

Here's the backstory: Those of you who know my car know that it has a lot of little things wrong with it -- radio went out, A/C went out, driver's window doesn't work, covering on the roof is coming off and the fabric on the ceiling is coming down, etc.... It has been to the repair shop recently a few more times than I would like, so I knew another car was in my future, sooner or later. Then in the past few weeks a new thing appeared: It would just die while driving. I'm doing 35 down the street and suddenly it's dead. It would always restart right away when I coasted to the curb, but still... Then yesterday (after having lunch with Tristen and Teghan at Grandma's) it died again on my way back to work. And this time it was difficult to start. Finally got it going, so I turned around and drove it -- coughing and spluttering -- back to Grandma's, where I parked it. Later Paul kindly gave me a ride to a rental place where I got the keys to a 95 Ford Aspire, the above-mentioned rattletrap.

By the way, I'm pretty sure that was the very last rental car available in the whole of Lincoln. I called every place in the book, and they all said they had nothing. Nobody seemed to know why there was such a demand, either. Some said they thought it was because of the rollerskaters convention in town. (But why would they need cars? They can skate!) Anyway, I did manage to get this car at National (formerly Rent-A-Wreck, and the old name still applies), and it was the last one they had.

So the plan is to not repair my old car (unless the car-repair elves visit it overnight) and instead to find a new car with Paul's generous help. (Make that "another car," not "new car," as my meager savings won't allow that.)

Amanda

Karen, Now, you really need a vacation, what a long day without any power! Glad the temp. was liveable. I enjoyed your stay here and the house is pretty empty the last few days. I went out to lay some bricks for the retaining wall by the windmill, dug out the ones there and put in 4, before the humidity got me, may turn into a bigger job than I thought! Hope everyone's day is better. Amanda, tomorrow will be fine to have the girls here.

You may have noticed a new feature on the front page. Added by popular demand is the Bush Countdown, ticking down the days until he congratulates Obama, gets on a plane to Paraguay, and we hopefully never see him again. I'm not sure I can stand looking at that ape-face every day for the next six months, so I will be changing it up every so often and maybe even suspending it once in a while. But as of now, let it be noted that it is now 182 days until we open the windows and air out the White House.
Amanda

Grandma, are you rested from all your company? Feel like having the girls tomorrow, Wednesday?

Amanda, the FEMA-guy-taking-notes thing is another example of our disappearing right to privacy under this un-American government we now have. As of recently -- on orders of the Bush White House -- any time a local, state, or federal official enters your home, they have been instructed to look for and report on anything "suspicious." And the courts will side with them if you make an issue of it. It amounts to searching your house without a warrant. I don't have a link to the story on this at the moment, but will try to find one. (Of course, it made hardly a ripple in the mainstream media...)

Oh my gosh Sioux City! I'm convinced the straight line winds are just as bad as tornadoes. Speaking of straight line winds, that's what damaged our garage doors back in May. Well, since that time Lancaster County has been declared a disaster zone by the prez & people are eligible for FEMA funds. Since our insurance didn't pay for the damage to the garage doors I applied for FEMA. The inspector called me today & came out to the house within 45 minutes. He did an "inspection" if you'll call it that (very weak, didn't even care to see the garage closed, and that's where you can see the damage) and then said he had to look at the rest of the house even though the garage is the problem. Said they had to do that to make sure everthing else was OK. I followed him around & noticed he was making marks everytime he saw a TV or major appliance. What's up with that? Does it matter to FEMA that we have more than 1 TV? Or more than 1 fridge? Does that mean my garage door isn't damaged? Don't get me wrong, our damage is minimal compared to everything FEMA has seen, but still... We'll know in 7-10 days if we are eligible for assistance. I'm not holding my breath.

And my day was not wonderful either. We were out at the lake all weekend, which was a lot of fun even though I got sunburnt & hit my leg on the propeller of the boat. My mom & I put the boat in the water & took it out of the water ourselves (no small task!) only to have her boat run crappy. She just got it out of the shop too! So, we didn't get to do any boating, but hanging out playing in the water, cooking over a campsite & doing s'mores was great. Then going to bed in the cold a/c of the camper was wonderful.

However, late last night (bout 9:30) Ryan & I came home & we drove my moms Durango to our house for her so she could bring in the camper today and Ryan got pulled over. 10 o'clock at night & Ryan needs to go to bed. What's aggravating about it though is that Ryan swears up & down he wasn't speeding. He had cruise set & even was following a car he knows was going under the speed limit. Whatever, we got a warning (apparently 65 in a 55)& a warning for "visual obstruction" for all the kitchy stuff my mom hangs from her rear view mirror. Oh, and probably for her radar detector that's on the windshield. Oy. Anyhow, home, shower & aloe & I crashed.

Got up this morning, got ready for work, left at 8:20, jumped in my Trailblazer, put the key in, and it turned for 1/2 a second so some lights turned on & my seat moved then the whole thing went dead. I couldn't even get my key out of the ignition. Thank goodness my moms Durango was here! I jumped in it & went on to work. Thank goodness that didn't happen while out at the lake, or at work. It was safe in my garage, dead with the keys in the ignition. Ryan stressed all day that it could be something major, of the electrical sort. However, once he got home he deduced it was the battery. It was fine before, showed no signs of weakness, so he thinks the heat killed whatever life it had in it. Nice...

Ryan's been very busy & stressed at work. Something about trains blowing up... Hmm... Anyhow, he worked 12 hours today and even jumped down the bosses throat (& later apologized citing stress) because of the trains. He comes home & fixes the car. Then he moves my moms boat into our driveway & works on it. He thinks he's got that fixed too. How many people can say they worked on trains, cars & boats in the same 24 hour period? And, remember if there was an airplane nearby he could work on that too. Amazing....

Hey everybody!! I saw Batman the Dark Knight today! Usually I thought that I would never really get into comic book heros that turn into movies, but I guess I saw all 3 spidermans and loved them. I never saw Batman Begins, but I saw the Dark Knight and it was amazing!! And now that I think about it, I also saw Hancock when it first came out and I absolutely loved that! I don't really know, I love Will Smith but I also loved the movie as well! I wrote a couple reviews about them and I learned that just because a critic doesn't like a movie doesn't mean that you don't have to... Critics said that Batman was great [which was true], but Hancock was just as great [which the critics hated]. Even though I never payed any attention to critics what-so-ever, I've learned that I never will either...

Thanks for the reviews, Livy! --Gary

Geez, what a day!! Woke up about midnight, wondering what the flashing lights were. Soon realized it was constant lightning, the wind was very strong (70 mph straight line winds), and soon had heavy rain. Brent (and the girls) were soon up too, he walked down the street to see what was going on. The house on the corner (our Mayor) had three huge trees down -- two of them blocking two streets. Oh, I forgot to mention that the electricity was off. Ryan, I thought of your troubles and turned on the battery clock alarm. We were sure the lights would come on during the night and headed back to bed. Woke up (with the alarm) at 6, but still no electricity. Then we went out and saw all the damage. Lots of trees and power lines down all over town. Brent went to his lighted, air conditioned office, while we waited for the power to return. Finally came back on at 5:30 and I am keeping my fingers crossed that it stays on -- and most importantly that the storms are done for a long time!!!!

Erika and I made it home last night, took a lot longer than expected and became quite an experience. We left Lincoln about 12:30 -- drove right to Omaha and got to the shower without any trouble. We had hoped to leave by 4 and head home, well the shower was a lot longer than expected (she had LOTS of presents to open). Finally left at 5:30. Erika and I decided we would get through Omaha and stop to eat in Mo. Valley. Usually this is a pretty quiet place to stop and eat. I pulled off and saw nothing but cars, buses, police, and BIKES! Traffic was backed up for blocks. Suddenly it occured to us that this must be RAGBRAI (a bike ride across Iowa) and it started in Mo Valley that day. So after a short delay we were soon back on the road. We were getting close to home when we noticed very dark clouds ahead. I was moving along hoping to miss them. Brent called on the cell about then asking where we were (30 minutes from SC). He suggested that we find a rest stop and pull over. SC had just gotten hit with a big storm. Heavy rain, strong winds and hail, in fact he is out now cleaning up the yard -- we lost a few branches. So we soon came to a "park only" rest stop -- I (and a few others) pulled over and waited. There was NOTHING for shelter, then I noticed a very dark huge cloud (with a possible funnel) headed our way-- Erika was getting very nervous by this time -- so I "calmly" suggested that we try for the next rest area about 5 miles away so we could get inside. So we headed off -- got about 100 yards and hit construction -- two way traffic and NO way to pull over, then the heavy rain and the winds hit us. Having no choice we headed on, by this time Erika wanted to be home (and so did I). The signs for the rest stop said 1 mile -- we were thrilled -- until we saw that the construction had closed it! So we headed on, about 3 miles later we were to Sergeant Bluff -- a small town just outside of SC. I pulled and went into a parking lot and waited. It poured and poured and we waited, about 15 minutes later it let up and we drove home. Got home about 8:30 -- and we were happy to be back! So a very exciting trip home.

Yow, what a nightmare drive! Glad you made it through. And thanks again for coming down -- it was a lot of fun! --Gary

Hey everybody! Oh Gary I've seen those videos!! I love them, except I have never seen that kitten one, a little odd I must say! I've never seen anything like that happen, probably because I have never had a cat... Anyways, Grandma, I could come over tomorrow after Karen takes Erika and the girls shopping... I work tomorrow but not until one, so I could probably come over after that, like just get dropped off after. I could come over before but it probably wouldn't be very long, I'm not sure yet, but I'm planning on coming after for sure. If that's ok of course!! So I guess I will talk to you all later!

Excellent! See you tomorrow, Livy! --Gary

eww. the kitten fight video is gross!
Sounds like everyone is having a fun time in Lincoln, I wish I could be there too!!!

Erika is off exploring the campus right now (headed toward the Student Union, I think), but before that we hung out in my office for a while. We did a little YouTube surfing, so I thought I'd share a couple of the videos we enjoyed.

First, an old favorite:

Another funny one with a 3-year-old (caution: language issues!):

And finally, a kitten-fight (with a surprise ending):

Erika and I did make it to Lincoln (as Gary said). Erika is going to work with Gary this afternoon. So we will be happy to have Tristen and Teghan on Thursday. Thought we might try just a little shopping at the mall too. So if they are up to it, send them over....
Amanda
7/15/08
I hear Karen & Erika made it in OK. Any plans? The girls are going tomorrow to my moms & to the lake, and tomorrow night they have dance & swimming. Thursday they have no plans during the day, and actually need somewhere to go that day. Would them coming to hang out that day work for all involved? Thursday night T has dance from 5-6:30. Friday Olivia is coming to our house to hang with the girls at our house, but I'm sure if something was going on at grandmas they'd find a ride over. Friday night we don't have any plans... Anyway, surely not looking for anyone to change plans on account of us & our plans, just wanted to touch base.

Sounds very workable, both Thursday and Friday. Everything is still pretty open, I think. Karen and Erika arrived in Lincoln about 1 today I understand, after two fun-filled days at Mahoney Park. Sean joined us for an excellent supper at Grandma's, then we all laughed like crazy people thanks to several games of Password. "Squid" + "Caramel" + "Teeth" = "Chewy!" --Gary

On Saturday the 12th dad took Tristen, Teghan and I to the Mustang show! When we first got there it started to rain a little bit, so we just ate at iHop and then went back. Got a lot of pictures, and thought I would send a couple to the newsletter! Tristen got really excited when we went inside and she took LOTS of brochures!! In 2 of the pictures she's ohhing and awwing at them! Also got some pictures of all of us inside some Mustangs! We also got to see a Mustang test its speed! We had a lot of fun I think!!

A big THANK YOU to everyone for our fine time in Lincoln, most especially to Mom for putting us up and feeding us so well! We really had a great time. It was nice to see that new release of "I Love Lucy," thanks Gary. Karen, I hope you are treated to a Tristen saxophone recital and a Teghan dance recital, both are excellent! We had a big downpour today, pitch black and lots of rain.

Yes, Gary, I remember Bob's Market, concrete floors, no frills, but what a great place for fresh veggies and fruits, the watermelons in those galvanized tubs of ice water looked as big as barrels and they always tasted so crisp and sweet. Dad took me there quite a bit and I always looked forward to going with him (always a candy bar for coming along and helping.) Too bad it is gone. Donna, have you got your new desk and chair or painted your office yet...it is going to look great. Also, Lori, thanks for the hair dryer, it sure saved me despite fighting the humidity.

Hmmm, yes, "I Love Lucy"... It certainly wasn't an illegal pirated DVD of "Iron Man"! --Gary

I don't remember that store, the name sounds familar though. Gross and hot out already!! Yuck!! Starting to prepare for our trip -- got most of what we need (I hope). Erika and I should be in Lincoln sometime Wednesday afternoon -- maybe Tuesday night. Just all depends on how it goes. I'll try to call first to let you know, but not sure we will get a signal out there. Emily would like to come, but has to work. Erika thought she would like to go to the zoo and do some shopping.

Looking at today's cool site, I remembered a place that some of you reading this may remember too: Bob's Market, a fruit and vegetable stand that used to be at the corner of 27th and Cornhusker (now an RV lot). It was a small three-sided building with the open side facing Cornhusker, and even on the hottest summer day it was cool and shady in there. No parking lot that I can remember -- you just pulled off Cornhusker (not multi-lane like it is today) and parked in the graveled space in front of the store, wide enough for maybe two cars. It always smelled like fresh peaches and strawberries inside, and there were always these big galvanized tubs full of watermelons floating in ice-cold water. Just looking at those tubs made you feel cooler on a hot day. I wonder why you never see melons in tubs of cold water like that any more? Anybody else remember Bob's Market?

Well Marsha and Anna are on their way back to Minneapolis, should be at or near Des Moines by now, they left a bit before 6 this a.m. We had such a good time in spite of the humidity, and the chiggers that made most of us downright miserable, wondering if we got them on the 4th as we were all outside for quite a while. No matter, they have taken up residence on us and, hopefully, they will move on soon! We hung out here mostly and enjoyed the company. Went to Farmer's Market on Saturday and us hearty souls that went got soaked, it quit raining on our way home. Good Food, Good Company, Good Time!!

So, Karen, we will be happy to see you and Erika in a week or so, if you can talk any more of the family into coming, they would sure be welcome too. Got about half inch of rain again this morning, maybe more later. Keeps the humidity up. Will Erika be driving down? Sounds like good practice! I say Congratulation's on finishing Driver's Ed. Now the wisdom teeth, you will be glad to hear school is starting before long, you've had a busy summer! See you next week.

So what has been happening in Lincoln? Are Hatgidakis still there? How was the 4th? We had a very quiet 4th. Brent and Erika shot a few fireworks off in the backyard. Emily had to work most of the day. We had quite a storm yesterday! About 4 it started to get dark, by 4:30 it was pitch black outside. Then the tornado sirens went off. So we were in the basement for about 45 minutes. Got lots of heavy rain. A tornado did touch ground at a state park about 5-6 miles from our house. It's pretty isolated out there, so there didn't seem to be much damage, other than to a few trees.

Mom, are you up for a couple of visitors again? We have had yet another change of plans. It is looking like Erika and I can come to Lincoln next Wednesday and stay until Sat morning. Brent's family is having a family reunion in Platte River Sun-Wed., then we have a baby shower in Omaha on Sat afternoon. Thought we would squeeze Lincoln in between. Let me know if it would work out for you. Still in the planning stages -- so I am open to changes. Emily is in Des Moines -- her and 3 friends left yesterday morning. They went to Adventureland and the new water park there. Today they wanted to hit the mall and come back sometime this afternoon. Called a few times yesterday -- sounded like she was having fun.

Oh, I forgot ... Amanda, I tried your new recipe last night. Delicious!! Thank you :)

Quick report -- I'll write more later. H's are here, heading back tomorrow (though Sam is staying on for a few more days I think). Lots of fun and activity since they got here, including a great 4th (on the 3rd), and a nice brunch at the Green Gateau yesterday. Ready for more fun when you guys get here! --Gary

Since we're all gold bonding, I looked up chiggers. Here's a good site. And it sounds like just what everyone is battling.. A lot of it makes sense too. Like they don't actually burrow into skin like widely thought, but hang onto skin for days & eat & then days later drop off & cause the bump & scratch... There's also a good way to test for them in your yard, grandma, you may want to try it! And some tips to keep them away! OY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Found the Green Gateau's website while trying to decide if we would make it in the am. And as soon as I opened the breakfast menu the first two things I saw looked delish! Ahh, hope we can make it!!!

New recipe from Teghan, which she invented during tonight's 3rd of July Party. Thanks, Teghan!

(Dang, I just noticed I erased a couple of recent recipes (Amanda's pasta and Tristen's PB&J Shake) from the page when I put Teghan's on. I'm using a new program to update the page, and I haven't gotten used to it yet. I'll restore the dropped recipes from my backups at my office next week. Sorry about that -- again!)

Grandma, can you check your email today please? I sent you one I don't want you to miss. Thanks!

Grandma, talked to Lori, they'll be bringing dessert, in the form of a fantastic cake made by Livy. I told them 6-ish, but since it's a work day & we'll be there all night (til dark at least) & since it sounds like just sandwiches or something easy that it would be OK if they got there when they could. Cool? I'll do garlic, garlic, spinach herb & beer bread chunks. What else? (Oh, and lame fireworks)

Sounds like it will be a fun 4th of July weekend in Lincoln, I wish we could be there too!

I'm not sure that my 4th will be too fun. Apparently everyone else that I work with decided to ask for it off, so I have to close 4th of July night... But we will be doing Saturday in the Park on the 5th and on the 6th I am going to Adventureland in Des Moines with some friends. We were originally going to go to Minneapolis, but decided we would save a lot on gas money if we took a shorter trip.

& Gary, I downloaded the Spore creator game a few days ago on my iPod and I have been having lots of fun with it! Thanks for putting up the link :)

Wow, that's cool. What's it like on the iPod?? You ought to try it on your desktop computer too. And it's even worth it to spend the ten bucks and get the full version (by download, or at Best Buy or someplace). With the full version, you have the whole toolbox to play with. Anyway, glad you're having fun with it! :-) --Gary

Oh, we might have a little problem with July 3rd fireworks. Ryan pulled a few out last night & lit them. They were weak! So, get ready to laugh! It was so funny! Maybe they all won't be bad, and maybe some new ones will magically appear that night!

Would anyone like to have a Game Party this weekend? I am up for a couple of new (and completely easy) games and will be bringing some FABULOUS prizes (No one leaves empty handed, even if you want to). Maybe we could round it out with a taco bar or some other easy cuisine (international food stations hosted by various family members perhaps). Party on.......

Erika, you and I are in the same club this summer. My own Festival of Dentistry began in late spring with a loose filling that called for a root canal and a crown (all finished except for the crown), then a broken tooth that called for a repair job, then root canal, then crown (all now finished). I've got one or maybe two more appointments yet to go this summer. The good news: All totally painless. The bad news: Bye-bye stimulus check...

Poor Erika, her summer vacation just isn't going well. First she started drivers ed class on the 1st day of vacation. Now that she is almost done with that, she gets more "fun." Went to see the oral surgeon this afternoon -- time to get her wisdom teeth out. So she will get a few weeks to enjoy, then on Aug 8 she gets to have them pulled them out. Amanda -- sounds like you will have quite a show on the 4th! We went out last night and got very few (mostly legal) fireworks. Didn't spend anywhere near $1400!! Sean -- good picture of Grandmas "garden." We can always tell when it's time to clean out our gutters when the trees start to grow in them :)

Anyone in Lincoln know if fireworks are legal to shoot on Thursday the 3rd? I know they sell them a day or two early, but I didn't know if you could light them before the 4th. We still have some leftover from last year (though Ryan says the safety factor is a little risky after a year... great...) and were thinking about doing them then. Sadly, the fantastic 4th we hosted last year will not see a repeat performance this year as Ryan got an offer from a friend at work. He lives out in the country & is doing food and fireworks. When Ryan heard this friend spent $1,400 on fireworks his eyes went all gaga & he couldn't turn down the offer.

So, I know Marsha's will just be getting into town on Thursday, but we could come over that night for some fireworks, or we could do it Saturday, though by then everyone's tired of it...

Any ideas anyone?

I just called the Fire Marshall for the lowdown, and here it is: You can shoot off fireworks on the 3rd, from 8 am til 11 pm. (On the 4th, 8 am til midnight.) "But be advised," he said, "anything with a 'bang' is illegal in Lincoln on both nights. [...pause...] Of course, your odds of being one of the few that LPD actually cites is pretty low." So there you have it! --Gary
