Hey, Livy, Grab your paintbrush and old clothes and come on over!!
We can have a paintin' party tomorrow.
Livy
6/29/08
Hey Grandma, do you think I could paint that tomorrow? Dad was going to grab a brush tonight and then mix that paint. But either tomorrow or Tuesday, or Wednesday would work to I guess. Whenever this week! Just give me a call.

Hey Gary I just wanted to say thanks again for the spore creations game! I've already made like 20 or something!! But how do I enter them in that dance contest that you told me about? I have a couple that can really dance!

You are welcome, Livy! About the contest, the details are here. You have to make a movie of your creature, then upload it to YouTube (you have to register with YouTube first). I don't have any other advice because I haven't done it. Good luck if you do! Winner gets a trip to Washington DC and the Smithsonian Institute. --Gary

I can come over for lunch. See you then! --Gary

New review, courtesy of Emily. I thought this movie looked like a stinker, Emily -- thanks for saving me the money to find out! :-)

Congratulations on your award Tristen! That is so cool! What classes are you & Teghan going to be taking next year? All of the recital videos looked nice too, they make me miss my recitals!
I have my last test in my statistics class tonight! Then there is only one more class and a take home final. I cannot wait to be done with it, and I won't have to take any more math ever again! The 4 hour class shouldn't be quite as boring for me tonight though. I bought a new ipod touch last night, and I love it! In addition to all of my music I can get video, movies, tv shows, & wireless internet. It has everything the iphone has, except the phone. I'm still figuring it all out, but I am really really liking it so far & it is a lot of fun. If anyone doesn't know what to do with their stimulus check, I would recommend an ipod touch! :)
& Gary, I had heard something about the "Spore" game awhile back, it looks like a lot of fun! I always like a Sims related game! I will have to download the creator too!

I've gotten more fun out of the free Creature Creator than I have out of some whole games I've bought. Way to go on the iPod Touch! I'm jealous! --Gary

And I was driving to & from Omaha during this monsoon. I had no idea it was coming, or I would have delayed the trip. I am SO very tired of the rain. (However, I don't wish for drought, heat, or anything else worse than rain...)
Karen
6/26/08
Tristen, I just watched your dance award -- WOW! That is great!
Marsha, Sam, & Anna -- I hadn't realized you were making another trip to Lincoln. I don't think I can go the 4th -- wish it were just a few days later. The Nelson's are having a family reunion at Platte River on the 14-18th. I was thinking that I would sneak out and spend some time in Lincoln.
Didn't need the storm picture on the front page this morning. We had a nasty storm go through about 7 this morning.
Erika is still taking her driving lessons, doing pretty well. Although her teacher did tell her fellow driver that she would be flunking the class. Gary -- the new game comes out just one day before your birthday -- I think that would be the perfect present for yourself :)

That purchase is already budgeted. :-) And speaking of storms, one just now passed through here (11-11:30 am) that was a real monsoon. Sky was dark as night, almost, and the storm drains couldn't keep up so the streets were full of water. --Gary

Attention, computer-gamers! If you haven't already heard of it, allow me to introduce you to the Next Big Thing -- a game called "Spore," by Will Wright, the guy who created both the Sim-City series and also The Sims series. In this game you create creatures at the microbe level (or higher), then watch (and help) these creatures evolve. They eventually form tribes, cities, civilizations, and ultimately achieve space travel allowing them to travel to other planets and interact with the creatures there -- creatures that may have been created by other players. The game will be released on September 7 for the PC, Xbox, and PS3 (and possibly for the Wii, though that hasn't been confirmed yet).

The Spore "Creature Creator" is already out, released for free so the eager fans could get their hands on it. The free download is a stripped-down version; the full version costs ten bucks, but that price is deducted from the actual game when you buy it a few months from now. You can download it here, and also see lots of Spore gameplay videos. (The Creature Creator is already installed on Grandma's computer -- just ask Tristen and Teghan!)

Everybody will be talking about this game in a few months, so now you're ahead of the game. :-)

Remember back on May 25th when I went on & on about Tristen's scholarship? Well, here's the video from her receiving it!

Also, if you go to our You Tube Page you can view the 6 videos from the recital. Also still on there are the rehearsal vidoes we shot from the audience. The recital videos are nicer, but don't focus on the T's....

Well holy thunder & lightning. Just when I thought the storms were over we got a doozie this morning! I woke up before 5 & couldn't get back to sleep because of the loud thunder. The girls stayed at my dads last night so I wonder if Livy got woken up by Teg????

Thanks to Tristen for another new recipe. I got to try this one also, and it is excellent -- great for a summer day. Thanks again, Tristen!

Wow. Here are some amazing photos of the floods in Iowa. Note they were posted about a week ago, so it's not the current situation. (By the way, that picture of the "angry resident" at the checkpoint was kind of troubling at first glance, but here's the full story on it.)

Gary, Gary, how could you be driving on a flat (shredded) tire and not notice??? Didn't you just get that thing out of the repair shop? Maybe it's time to start shopping for a new one :) I think it also may be time for a cell phone! I reread that story from June of 2005 - it still makes me a bit uneasy...... Metcalfs - very nice mail box -- Sean I think you may have a new product to sell.

First day of summer yesterday, and here's how part of it went for me and Grandma: We had been to the library out on Superior St. and were on the way back, coming over the viaduct on 27th. We had the windows down, and through them we started to hear this rumbling racket. I checked the mirror and said, "That car behind us is really making noise!" As it drew it up even with us, I slowed down a bit hoping it would pass. But it stayed even with us, and the driver rolled down his window and shouted, "You've got a flat tire!" And just about then we could feel it. So I pulled off the road near the police station at 27th and Holdrege. And man, the tire was shredded. It was clearly a blowout, but not an "explosive" one as we didn't hear or feel it when it happened. I hadn't even seen my spare tire in ten years, so I assumed it was flat, or eaten by moths or something -- so we needed to call for help.

No cell phone (yes, I live in the dark ages), so I went to the police station to use their phone. And learned that the police station closes at 4 pm... As Donna later said, good thing there's no crime after 4. So I tried the pay phone across the street: out of order. And then to the Vietnamese nail salon on the corner. Hoping the powerful chemical smells there weren't causing permanent brain damage, I asked to use the phone behind the counter. She said no, but did offer me her cell phone -- after first instructing me, "No long distance!" I couldn't get it to work, so one of the patrons said I could use hers -- "Just reach in my purse...it's on the side...no, further over...etc." This one paid off, so I called Paul.

He arrived in a few minutes. I was hoping he would just give us a ride to Grandma's, and I would have the car towed to my shop for new tires. But like a NASCAR pit crew, he got out his tools and changed the tire. The spare was a little low, but driveable enough to go a few blocks down the street where we pumped some air into it.

So we were back on the road only 45 minutes after the blowout. Monday: New tires! Thanks again, Paul, for the rescue. Thanks to you, I didn't have to send Grandma home with a complete stranger, like on June 20, 2005!

Gary

Thanks for the new recipe, Tristen! (You didn't name it, so I made one up. Let me know if you want to change it.) I've already tried these, everyone, and they're goooood! :-)

I heard that's why the rebate checks are late, the flooding..... :)

We have a name for that where I work. (Or a phrase, actually.) When somebody's writing assignment is very overdue, we often hear a variation of this: "My paper is two months overdue because I was sick yesterday." :-) --Gary

Karen

I think the next phase of the flooding that will affect us all is the cost of food. Corn products and beef will skyrocket......

Well, I wouldn't worry about it. I'm sure any day now Bush will fly over the area in his plane, and everything will be ok... --Gary

Gary
6/17/08
On the flooding: Not to make light of it, but it has affected me by delaying my Netflix movies. I got an email from Netflix saying that with the flooding in Iowa, my movies may take a day or two longer to arrive. Also, I ordered something online which should have been here by now, and when I called customer service about it, they too said the flooding is causing shipping problems.
Karen
6/16/08
We are getting ours through the mail. I've heard that if you didn't send your tax returns until April 15 (which we did) it will delay it. I guess my point is why didn't the IRS (G W Bush) tell us that on the schedule. Typical government red tape......
Amanda
6/16/08
I've been affected at work by the flooding. We get a lot of offenders from Iowa, and its my job to get the police records & court records. I have some waiting in Polk County, Des Moines, and just got a fax today from the District Court that it'll be awhile, due to the flooding.

We got our rebate check, as scheduled on May 16th. I have heard that Sean is still waiting... Are you all getting it by mail? We got direct deposit and I know my mom & my friend Amber got theirs too and via direct deposit.

The floods in Iowa are bad, but hopefully getting a little better. Been most of our news lately. The railroad bridge (the picture that Amanda sent) has already begun to affect us. The railways are rerouting a lot of trains through SC. So we were asked to have patience for the next several months while there are even more trains going through the city. Brent was also complaining last Friday - seems no one could get any state files on their computers -- all under water in Des Moines.

Erika's driving abilities are improving! However, the other driver in car is pretty bad. She told me today that this kid took a turn at 50 mph and jumped the median. Poor Erika bumped her head on the way up and her elbow on the way down. I'm not sure how much the teacher is getting paid for this job, but she deserves a raise :)

Anna -- thank you for the note and gift card -- Emily and I went shopping this morning. I got myself some treats -- Donna, I also used the Barnes and Noble card today. So lots of shopping and not spending much -- thanks to you both!!

Oh, one more question for all you tax payers -- Has anyone gotten their stimulus check yet? We were scheduled to get ours on May 23 (according to the IRS payment schedule). But are still waiting. Brent even went to our local State Rep office for an answer (since the web site did not list a phone number). We got a letter back from the Reps office today saying it "should" be here by July 20th.

Re: stimulus check: Haven't even gotten the "here it comes" letter yet... --Gary

For those of you too young to remember Burma-Shave (and I think that includes just about everybody reading this), it was a shaving cream popular from the 1920s through the 1950s. The company was sold in the '60s and the product disappeared from the shelves until recently, when the brand-name was revived; so you may see it again in some stores.

What made Burma Shave famous was their clever advertising: Instead of a single billboard they placed a series of six small signs spaced out over half a mile or so, each sign bearing one line of a four or five-line "poem" and the final sign always read "Burma Shave." As you drove along, the poem unfolded itself line by line. The poems were an odd mixture of pushing their product and encouraging highway safety. Anyone who drove or rode on the highways in those days remembers Burma Shave. Hope you enjoy Burma Shave Week!

Our neighbor's cousin lost his home in the tornado a week or so ago that hit that area of Iowa. He was not home. He was out fishing at his cabin on the river which probably saved his life. Besides totally demolishing his home everything was sucked out of the basement where he would have gone for safety. Well, if that wasn't enough for him to have to deal with the raging river his cabin was on and where he was fishing when his home was destroyed was washed away a few days ago. He has quite a crop of lemons to make lemonade with.

Amanda sent in this photo from the MSNBC site: "Buildings and debris are seen floating in the Cedar River against a railroad bridge Saturday, June 14, 2008, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Days after it rose out of its banks on its way to record flooding in Cedar Rapids, the Cedar River has forced at least 24,000 people from their homes, emergency officials said Saturday."

I don't love hot dogs, but this place sounds kinda good. Way too much food for my appetite, but I'd like to give it a try. But, mostly I thought of Ryan, Gary, Dad & Sean when I read this.

Been there! :-) Good place. No sit-down at all -- you order through a walk-up window. Wide variety of excellent dogs, though. And it's cash only -- no cards. --Gary

So you had trouble getting on this site today? Me too. Turns out it wasn't only this site. I called the windstream/Windstream tech guy and learned that an offshoot of the storm that swept through here a few days ago hit one of their centers east of here and caused a large outage -- which was "growing as we speak," the guy said. But if you're reading this, it is now fixed! :-)

Oh my gosh, Tim Russert died....

Total shock and surprise. It's a real shame. I know he was having the time of his life during this amazing campaign season; in fact, I wonder if covering it 24 hours a day, seven days a week didn't push him too far.... --Gary

Ok first of all I'm not really that bad of a driver. 2nd my honor wasn't scaring the teacher most that week; it was scaring her more than any other student EVER. And in my defense I had to look around this huge bush to see if a train was coming and then my teacher was telling me to go, so I went without seeing if anyone was coming, and technically no one really was. Just wait for Monday we're going on the interstate!

Oh Gary I forgot to tell you when the crossword was up, but I finished it the word is Mojo.

You got it! (Game is over, so the word is revealed....) The speed limit in Iowa is 70, Erika, so if your teacher tries to trick you into going 80, don't fall for it! :-) --Gary

Here's a cool video: A time-lapse movie (53 seconds here = 28 hours) of the fires which burned in the Simi Valley hills (outside Los Angeles) back in September of 2005.

No joke. We have a whole new slew of photos of the flooding... In the garage again, and backyard, and some in the basement. We spent from 7-8:30 in the basement. Finally at 9 we made spaghetti. We were starving. We joked about putting food from our basement freezer in the dryer to warm it up and eat it as thats all we had in the basement.

I hear Lori did get back, though delayed. Not sure on the specifics though.

Erika. For once, I am glad you guys DON'T live in Lincoln. Every other opportunity I think we would all agree we wish everyone lived here. However, I am glad you are two hours away & driving there & not here!

Grandma
6/12/08
I am also getting tired of watching only the weather, maybe one more night, then better days ahead. There was 3.50 inches in my gauge this a.m. No hail here, and wind was in and quickly stopped which in itself was kinda scary, but did it RAIN!! Not much I can do outside today, too muddy and the mosquitos are awful!! Took a small walk around the yard and I am paying for it! Did Lori get back home yet ??

P.S. Erika, Where are your glasses? Semi's are bigger than you, they can run over you! Did you have a substitute teacher today?

Karen
6/12/08
It was a stormy night, although we didn't end up getting much at all. The storms were everywhere else. Erika and I were watching tv, ended up on an Omaha channel, had constant coverage of the storm for over two hours. Blenco (where the scout camp was) is about an hour from SC, actually halfway between SC and Omaha, right off of highway 29. The local blood bank in SC was asking people to come and donate blood. I guess about 500 people showed up and they were still in line at midnight. Several of the people were brought SC hospitals. Any damage in Lincoln? Looked like you were getting hit pretty hard. I tell ya, Iowa is about done for, the flooding is pretty bad here too. Just about every river is overflowing. Maybe someone is trying to tell us something......

Just dropped Erika off at drivers ed class. Yesterday when I picked her up, I asked how class went. She grinned and said the teacher gave her a "special honor." I was very excited for her and asked what it was for -- "scaring the teacher the worst for the week." I asked Erika what happened, she answered "I didn't see the semi." Yikes!! Good news is, the truck was turning....... Let's see she still has about 3 more weeks of class -- I think this is a good thing :)

Gary
6/12/08
So, did everyone survive last night? Wild weather from Minnesota to Kansas, so there should be a few stories out there. The Boy Scout camp story was all over the national news this morning. I don't have the location of it quite pictured, but it is close enough to Sioux City that the injured were taken to hospitals there. I also heard that Lori was flying back to Lincoln last night after a trip east. Anybody know if her flight was delayed or cancelled?
Gary
6/11/08

Okay, these storms are now getting ridiculous. Violent weather once in a while -- hey, that's how it goes. But every bleepin' night??? This storm tonight had me running from back porch to front window to basement for 90 minutes, from 7 to 8:30. Flooding all over town, high winds, lightning, hail, and one tornado reported on the ground in central Lincoln. (You know, where I live....) So I scrambled to the basement, only to hear that sighting was unconfirmed, then later retracted. And now that this storm has passed, there's another one in the pipeline, due here in about an hour. Sheesh! At least I'm well prepared. Wait, check that, make it not well prepared -- no flashlight, no radio... I'll go out tomorrow and buy those items, which will surely usher in a stretch of beautiful weather. I hope.
Gary

Great speech this afternoon by Hilary, eloquent and moving. Hope you all got to hear it. Plus, she delivered it in one of my favorite places -- the National Building Museum in Washington, an amazing (and little-known) building. There are only two other places that I've been to that I can compare it to: Union Station (also in Washington), and the Vatican. Next time you're in Washington, put it on your list! Pictures and even movies don't really give you the feeling, but here's a short view of it anyway:

P.S.: Is the crossword puzzle really that hard, that only two people have finished it...? :-)

Our trip home went well, we listened to Des Moines radio stations and made quick work to push ahead of the storm and made it back to Mpls. without any rain. We stopped at Clear Lake for lunch and then stopped at the Medford Outlet mall in Owatonna. Nice trip back and a BIG thank you to Mom for having us and to the Metcalfs for dinner and entertainment from Teghan for her Guitar Hero. Our dinner of roast pork, spiral ham, spizolli (?) salad, baked beans and potato salad courtesy of Linz's graduation was awesome! What a treat! I still am thinking of the Garlic Garlic Dip, honest Ryan, it doesn't have any mayo in there! Mom, I am yet to plant the pentsimmon (?, again) but at Bachman's they sell for $10.99 each, you should open your own garden store. I am so glad we made it down for Gayle's service, it was nice so many folks came to that amd it was good to see Dee and Denny. Karen, Anna wrapped herself in your blanket all the way down for naps, it sure is beautiful. How's Brent? Emily, thank you for the pictures and report of Erika's dance recital. Nice photos! We are expecting lots of rain the next week, I wonder if we will see summer at all this year.

Gary, the word is ******! I had to get a little help from Ema, but I did have most of the words -- fun. I enjoyed doing it. We are getting a stormy day. Very dark and dreary and just starting to rain, with lots more yet to come today. Erika has a full week of drivers ed in, also had a slumber party on Tuesday. Emily started her class on Monday and goes again tonight. They are both playing a game of Monopoly now. Marsha, Anna -- how was the trip yesterday?

You got the secret word! Thanks for playing it. These puzzles are not that hard to do, so I'll try to make them a frequent feature. --Gary

After a busy and good time the last few, Marsha and Anna got on the road a little before 6:00 this morning, so should be nearing Ames, maybe. First stop was to be "Lamar's Donut's." Maybe a couple will make it home to John! Was a busy, busy time for my not so busy schedule, so today seems like a nap day.

Here's Garlic Garlic! Also, the "Bountiful Beer Bread Mix" was served here tonight, as well as the "Spinach & Herb Dip Mix." I also have the "Tempting Taco Cheese Ball Mix" & "Blue Aztec Chips" (SO good!). Also good is the "Almond Pound Cake." Geez, once again, I sound like I sell the stuff!

And I just noticed on their site if you go to Try Recipes you can drop down menu the product you have & search for recipes using that product, how cool!

I became addicted to this garlic dip last night, and asked Amanda to reveal the source. Thanks, Amanda! --Gary

Erika was in a great "Rhythm in the Garden" dance recital Saturday afternoon. Mom and I went, Dad has been sick and opted to stay at home, so I made sure to take lots of pictures. I picked out a few to send to Gary to put up on the page, if he doesn't mind :)

There was only one other girl in Erika's group this year, and they did a tap dance with hula hoops to "The Hippy Hippy Shake". Mom and I both agreed that it was one of the top performances.

At the end of the recital all of the girls from the studio did a big finale dance. Erika even got to lead her own group of little girls through it. The little mermaid girl in the pictures espcially liked Erika :)

It was a fun afternoon, I'd never watched a recital live before!

Photos here. Thanks, Emily -- and good show, Erika! --Gary
