Yeah, bridges need to be checked, after all, we do pay millions of dollars in taxes for sufficient infrastructure, schools, parks and of course hopeless wars. Mom, who are you pulling for on Top Chef... I thought it would be Trey but he's a goner!! Probably CJ and Casey, but I really enjoy Dale. Zach got a knife from his boss/chef at Bar Abilene for his birthday and one from John and me as well from Williams/Sonoma, it was a lot of fun to shop with him for it. Anna really enjoyed her first day of school. Fall weather is creeping in, our grass looks awesome after all of this rain. Fall plants and Halloweeen stuff is out at work and it seems too early but we do have FOOTBALL this weekend. Oh the joy!! As you can see from the news, Minneapolis continues to pull down the ultra conservative right wingers!
I salute the Minneapolis airport bathroom cops! They're going to have to do double-shifts when the Republican Convention comes to MPLS next year. :-) --Gary

8/30/07 Almost a crisp fall morning out there today: temp was 61 and the grass was full of dew when I left for work this morning. Plus, when I walked from my car to my building I could hear the band practicing in the stadium -- always a sign of fall for me. Ahhhh! Even though we're supposed to have few 90+ days next week, I think we've made it! :-)
Gotta share a Teghan story: She spent a few hours at my place last Saturday, after the slumber party at Donna's and while Tristen was playing her soccer game. During those few hours, she found every possible toy I own, including some things I hadn't seen in years and I had to ask where she'd found them! A returning favorite, though, was this set of pyramid-shaped magnets that can be fit together into a ball, among other shapes. This, along with everything else, was scattered all over the floor while she played. Later that night, when I was picking things up (kinda like clearing your yard after a storm), I tried re-assembling the ball of magnets -- and found about six missing. So I kept looking, and found one here, two more there, etc. But the final two I could not find -- looked everywhere, but nothing. I figured they would eventually turn up, but couldn't imagine where I hadn't already looked. So this morning as I'm getting ready for work, I caught sight of my Homer Simpson jack-in-the-box... I knew Teghan had been playing with it, and I had in fact already checked inside it and found nothing. But for some reason I checked it again -- and found the two missing pieces, not merely inside it, but actually inside the Homer figure! Somehow she had gotten the pieces under his shirt where they were practically undetectable. D'oh! Thanks, Teghan -- you created a five-day puzzle for me, with a great pay-off! :-)
One more piece of news, while I've got the floor: I saw this morning that the city is going to replace the West O St. overpass (or the "Harris Overpass" as it's called -- never knew it had a name before!).
Work begins this November, and the bridge will be closed for a year -- opening October 2008. The project manager said the overpass is "structurally deficient." Hmmmm.... bet there's a lot of this happening in the country right now. Anyway, it's a landmark. An ugly one, but a landmark. Been around for as long as I can remember. This one was built in the mid-50s, though an overpass has been on that site since the 1880s -- the first one had a wooden surface.
No updates here til this afternoon: I'm heading over to the Lied Center for the Chancellor's yearly "State of the University" address, to be followed by a picnic in the Sheldon sculpture garden -- for a couple thousand faculty and staff. Nice day for it!

Another day of school over for me. Been going well, but always glad to have the day over. Erika is doing great in high school, I think opening her locker is the biggest problem. Emily seems to be adjusting to college life. Keeping busy, but she has stopped home a few times. Tomorrow will be her first day of "real" classes. Brent is out of town -- actually in Lincoln. He had to take a couple of classes for his job and saw one in Lincoln. So he headed down there last night. Don't imagine he'll stop by for dinner tonight though. Should be back late tomorrow. So Erika and I are on our own. We are thinking we need a mall run, maybe a movie and of course dinner out.

Another really hot day! I am so ready for sox and sweatshirts. I am liking the computer just fine, altho' I feel bad because it is so under used. I don't venture a lot beyond the web page and what it supplies. You will be happy to have your yard fenced, Amanda, but I think Sasha will like it even more. Carol brought tomatoes this morning and they are so good! I just made salsa out of some with spots even tho I didn't have all the stuff for it, it still tastes ok. Anna, we need your first day input, and how about your California trip? Marsha, I am still watching "Top Chef" when I don't forget it. I am also getting into Design Star but there are too many reruns of it, it is always on. Have chicken and dressing in the crockpot. Really not sounding too good for a hot day!!

I understand that the Miss Teen USA contest was viewed at the Friday night slumber party (Teghan, Tristen, and Livy at Donna's), and that this moment was enjoyed by all:

Even though it is supposed to get up to 95 today (booo!), the campus is full of students again, meaning it's the first day of classes here and the beginning of the best part of the year (yay!). I have already done one yearly ritual this morning: given directions to a student who was wandering the hall with a confused look on his face -- he was lost and in the wrong building.
Interesting week ahead: First football game is this Saturday, for one thing. But in the meantime, Gonzales resigned over the weekend. So now we see if Congress will rush back from vacation to prevent Bush from making a "recess appointment" (which he is legally entitled to do when Congress is not in session). That means he would get to appoint whoever he wants without Senate approval. I am hearing the name Chertoff a lot -- you remember him, one of the heroes of Katrina? Also known as Skeletor? The guy who, as Director of Homeland Security, turned in a balance sheet with 22.3 billion dollars unaccounted for? (Ooops, don't know where that money went -- sorry!) I heard this morning that Harry Reid wants to bring the Senate back early from vacation and convene an Emergency Session to prevent a recess appointment... He'd better! but we'll see.

Hey everybody! This week has been kind of hectic! But we all got through it! Just with school, and I have been planning things for my birthday, and today I went to see Teghan's soccer game! It was all very cute! Go Blazers! Then Saturday Tristen's game, I went to hers and she won 3 to nothing! Go Fever! This week was all very exciting! Now it's time to sleep for a while!!! But I do have to go back to school tomorrow, but luckily next weekend it's a 3 day weekend!!! Boy have I been waiting for that!!! Well I guess that is all I had to say, well talk to you all later!!!

Glad that you finally had some rain too, we have had record rainfalls for August too. Guess the whole family has terrible allergies Amanda. Sam was tested and is allergic to almost every tree! When Rainbow (the cat) died, our symptoms decreased for year round allergies dramatically (I hope Gma does not adopt Zoe) and we now have to avoid cats. The first day of school reports and pictures were really fun! Hey does anyone watch Top Chef on Bravo? It is one of my favorites and I would like to compare notes.

Hey, everybody: Grandma got a brand-new computer this afternoon -- a real honey, with a flat-panel widescreen monitor which is a joy to behold. (I got so jealous I bought one for myself, too!) So send Grandma an email and try it out. :-)

Usually not this much rain in August, but it does happen. I am always happy when it does, otherwise everything would be brown and crispy. What I don't remember is the unending length of humidity!! Weatherman said we've had 5 weeks of unusally high humidity with high temps also. Another almost inch last night. Labor day weekend SHOULD be the beginning of cooler days and nights, We'll see.
Erika, I also want to know what Plato lab is?? And Emily, how is dorm room living? Has your roommate moved in yet? I need details!!
More crazy weather! I don't remember this much rain in August. But, like I mentioned the other night, maybe I'm still in Texas mode (I mentioned that I forgot when it cools off in Nebraska because we are used to Texas where it's hot clear into October, then it snaps & gets cold, there is no fall). Grandma?? Rain in August?? This much??

Another bad storm last night. My neighborhood lost power around 7 and was out for an hour. And my cable was still out this morning. Highs for tomorrow in the mid 70's. That sounds wonderful. Is it possible we could finally be moving towards Fall?
Somehow I didn't notice the evening storm (TV too loud?), and somehow slept through the storm at night (though I do remember hearing thunder once in a while). Yeah, let's make it official: The Heat Wave Is Over! :-) --Gary

Amanda, what a fun day you had. Emily and Erika each had those shot tests too. They are both allergic to the dust mites. They are a disgusting creature. Something that they both swear by is the Febreeze with allergen -- always spraying their beds with that and it seems to help -- along with the covers and washing the bedding often.
We have had nothing but rain here today. Been coming down steady since about 7, also lots of thunder and lightning. At noon we had already had 3 inches and still more to come tonight and tomorrow. Last day of vacation for me and Erika, back to school tomorrow.....
Amanda
8/22/07
Thanks Gary! My mom sent a few others that I would love to share, but Sean might be upset. Well, one anyway: lots of barrettes.
I went & got allergy tested today. I should get the report in the next day or two, but I do know that I have 3 major allergies & about 12 less significant ones. They did the back skin test where they do about 50 "indentations" that have the allergen on them. That sat for 15 minutes then they determined which ones caused a reaction & then they gave me 18 separate shots in my arm of each of those & waited another 15 minutes. When the RN came to check on me halfway through she asked if it itched & lifted up the gown on my arm & said, "wow, I've never seen one swell that big before." It was ragweed. So the Dr. came back & rated them all according to size/reaction. The scale is between 1-4 & ragweed was a 4++ which he equated to about an 8! And we are just starting ragweed season! The other two that are pretty bad are dust mites (and I learned about them, YUCK!) and cats. I always had a pretty good idea that I was allergic to cats, itchy watery eyes when I hold them or come into contact with their fur & my skin swells if they scratch or bite me. But, now its confirmed. The Dr. recommended getting rid of Zoe. Strongly recommended it. Said it should obviously help the allergies, but also the asthma & recurrent headaches that have bothered me the last year or two... SO... Not sure what we are going to do yet about that... Teghan thinks Grandma's house would be a good new home for her. ;-)
I am going to start the 5 year process of allergy shots. They will make up my own special concoction of items to be immunized against & I will start in about 2 weeks. I will go weekly for the first year, then biweekly, the less often as I progress. A long haul, but worth it in the end I hope! I know one thing, I am glad to be back on my normal everyday meds now, I was miserable the last 4 days without them while prepping for this test!

I was actually at work when the storm hit. It was creepy looking outside! The wind was so strong it would open and shut our front doors which freaked me out the first time it happened. We also have a huge heavy door in the back of the kitchen and working with a bunch of 20-some year old guys they were taking turns opening it and getting thrown out in the rain and having to pull it back...must be a guy thing but it was funny to watch. One guy even attempted to take a running start and jump on a rolling cart as someone opened the door. That's my work for ya!
I also had my first day of classes today. Fairly easy all around. I'm out this week at 11 everyday so it's not too tough! Picked up Teg and Tristen from school today. Again, Teghan didn't have much to comment on although she only got to play at recess for 5 minutes she said!!!
Gary
8/21/07
Yeah, in my note below I used the word "twigs," because that was all I saw this morning. Driving through that same neighborhood at noon today -- after some clean-up work had been done -- I saw lots of big limbs (6 feet long, some car-length) laying by the curb for pick-up. A friend here at work (whose power was out from 6:30 to 11 last night) said his neighbor had a trampoline in their back yard -- and he watched the wind pick it up and blow it away, clearing a 6-foot high fence....
Amanda
8/21/07
It was a wierd storm! I had the tv on for weather & Teghan grabbed on to a catch phrase & repeated it all night, "stay away from the windows!" I hope it isn't as bad tonight, and we'll be at grandmas! Great picture Linz, my mom is going to scan & email mine & Sean's too!

Looks like the first day of school went well, great pictures! Emily stopped by yesterday after her classes. Seemed to be liking it all. The class was kind of boring for her, but she had made several friends. Being a SC resident does seem to give her an advantage -- she had to lead a group to Walmart her first night. I guess the only disadvantage so far was the breakfast. The football players are already there and they have breakfast before she does -- and they didn't leave the rest much to eat. Erika had an open house last night and she got her schedule. I think she will be happy to get started and back into the routine. I start on Thursday -- may even in check in today and see what to expect. We had big storms yesterday too. I was just coming out of Target with a full cart -- I heard rumbles of thunder as I was shopping, so I hurried to get out. I didn't make it -- as I was going out the door it was coming down hard and the wind had picked up. I was lucky to get everything into the car, I was SOAKED!! So a miserable ride home. We also got another big storm shortly after getting home from Erika's open house. The sky got all green, then pitch black. We got about 2 inches before it was over.
I'm hearing we had 70-80 mph winds last night. On the drive in this morning, the streets and sidewalks were covered with twigs and leaves. A mean little storm! And another possible for tonight, I understand. --Gary

Woo-hoo! Wild thunderstorm passing through right now (6:45 pm)! Heavy rain whipped around by strong winds, plus marble-sized hail coming down like little meteors. It sounds like two dozen people outside throwing rocks at the house. And it's hitting the windows with enough force to be a little worrisome....
Thanks for the first-day reports, Teghan and Tristen! (And great pictures, Amanda!)
P.S. Emily: You must have some very good friends, if they moved you into a fourth-floor room on a hot day with the elevator broken.... :-)

Grandma, soccer yes... I will email the schedule to Gary, if anyone cares to paruse (wow, I'm sure I didn't spell that right!). Teghan is going to play too! Tristen will practice on Sundays at 1. And dance starts on September 4th. Tristen will go Tuesday nights til 6:45 or so, Teghan goes Wednesday night for an hour & Tristen goes again on Saturdays for 45 minutes. And Tristen is playing the saxophone in school this year. We got it out of the shop Friday (she is playing one of Ryan's) and she honked quite a bit on it that night, but her & Ryan stuck with it for about an hour & she started producing real noise. She's excited!
It's that time again!!!! Only this time, Tristen's team is in the competitive league & Teghan is starting 3 man soccer! That ought to be fun to watch, just starting out, no refs, no off-sides & no understanding of the game!
Anyhow here ya go. Feel free to come to all, none, or somewhere in-between! Ryan won't be able to make it to many of Tristen's and he might not make it to some of Teghan's earlier games, so extra support would be nice.
Wright Park is where ALL of Tristen's games are & that's off of Pioneers & Hwy 77. ALL of Tristen's games are on field 6. Middle of the complex the "upper" field. Go FEVER!
Spirit Park is where ALL of Teghan's games are & that's at 84th & O. Teghan's will be an hour long, but the first 25 minutes is practice & the last part is the game, so feel free to come to all of it, or just the last half hour. Teghan's games are on different fields, so pay attention to that. GO BLAZERS!

Umm I played at the school, OK.... My teacher's Mrs. Malone. And I played at the house. School. And I listened to a story and then colored a picture of it. I have to draw a picture about my favorite thing. I had to cut out a word that is Barbie because I already know how to read it.

I am looking forward to hearing about all the first days back in school too. I betcha they were pretty exciting and will be for the late starters as well. Still hot here and I am jealous of Mn. 60+ but am glad not to have the flooding. Tues night supper sounds fine, Amanda. Has Tristen got into dance and soccer schedules yet?
Amanda
8/20/07
Yep, Tristen got off to her first day of the last year of elementary school this morning! We drove her to my dads, parked there & walked her to the fence, where she went the rest of the way on her own without ever looking back. Teghan will go at 12:15 today. She is VERY excited. Does not seem the least bit nervous at all. We will try to get her to give a report, but as Lindsey, Grandma, Donna & Dad (all the people who have picked her up from preschool) will attest, she's not real forthcoming with the details. I take what little bits of info she randomly throws into a conversation!
Grandma, maybe we will come over for dinner tomorrow night for Tuesday night dinner again so the girls can see you guys? You have the space?
Donna, still on for a slumber party for Friday night? Tristen has a soccer game Saturday at 12 that dad is taking her to, so we will need to get her by 11 at the latest.
I'm working the state fair on Saturday. It's in the State Patrol's building & its air conditioned & apparently slow. But, its a day out of the office & I traded for having today off so I could take the girls & pick them up.
Gary
8/20/07
Yeah, have a great first day, everybody. We do want to hear the details. Also, could Tristen and Teghan fill us in on Friday night's "High School Musical"? I just heard that it was the most watched cable program ever. :-)

Hey everybody! Well I got all moved into my dorm today. Right after work we loaded up our cars and some of my friends came over and we got all moved in in a few hours, even though I'm on the 4th floor and the elevator was broken... And, somehow I am getting wireless internet in my room even though its not supposed to be hooked up...
I start classes at 9:20 tomorrow... hopefully they aren't too boring.
Hope everyone else starting tomorrow has a good time! :)

Good question about the movie lines. I know there are a few Napoleon Dynamites, a Woody Allen, and even a Saturday Night Live sketch among them. :-) But there are lots of them I don't know. Anyone...? (I will update this boxed list as the answers come in.)

Yeah, thats how ours worked too, with the dual credit, but the school still paid for everything. But, now I am having to pay just to transfer my credits, which is a little annoying.
Lindsey
8/16/07
Yes I pay for them but it's set up different than Sioux City. They're called Dual Credit classes, not AP. You have to register yourself as a student at Southeast and then it's as if you're taking the class offered by the college. We have AP classes which I could've taken, but decided Dual Credit would work better for me.
Emily
8/16/07
Well, the main reason I took college credit and AP classes in highschool is because they're for free. & I don't think they're really shoving it down our throats. A lot of people don't even qualify to get into the classes.
Lindsey, do you have to pay for all of your college credit classes?? That really sucks if you do! In SC as long as you're in high school and an equivalent credit class isn't offered at your school the school pays for your classes and books and you get the college credit and a highschool credit. It was really a pretty good deal.
Amanda
8/16/07
I think you guys are all a little crazy! Enjoy highschool! Save college for college, you'll get enough of it there. I actually don't like that they are shoving it down students throats in highschool, its so typically American. They didn't offer anything like that when I was in highschool, or even Sean I don't think, but if they had, I wouldn't have taken it & look I graduated college with honors! Stop & smell the roses!
Lindsey
8/15/07
Oh, and they're for actual college credit because we've paid tuition for those classes.
Lindsey
8/15/07
I already checked the college credits and they work.
Amanda
8/15/07
Good pointers Emily, I always try to warn people on doing classes early & transferring them in to other schools. I learned it the hard way going from Bellevue University to UNO then to Midwestern State University. Sure, they transferred, but as "electives" because they couldn't fit them into one of their classes based on descriptions. I had to fight for a few classes, it was pathetic! I was always warning Sean because he was taking a bunch at SCC, then was wanting to transfer them into UNL. I'm glad he's on a bachelor program now at Hamilton College... Anyhow, today was my one year anniversary with the State Patrol! Yeah for me!
Congrats! --GaryEmily

Summer is pretty much all over for me by now too. I have today, tomorrow, and Friday then work on Saturday & Sunday and I move in Sunday afternoon. I have been cleaning and packing all week, trying to get everything organized and ready.
At least the first 2 weeks shouldn't be too bad. The first week, starting on the 20th, I just have 3 classes a day for the "Bridge Program" I am in. Then the next week is "Welcome Week" when everybody else moves in. There aren't even any classes until Wednesday. And, that weekend we can go to the Omaha Zoo and a water park in Lemars along with Art Splash in SC. So, I am taking that whole weekend off of work and I'm thinking it should be a lot of fun.
But, after all that I should get a lot busier and into more of a routine, along with dance try outs! I will also start up with Teen Court again in September. I can't serve as an attorney anymore, since I'm not in high school. But, they are going to keep me on as a "mentor" and I will do trainings and help set up cases.
Looks like you have a good senior year schedule, Lindsey. I still wish I wouldn't have taken so many AP & college credit classes and had more time for fun stuff. And, be careful in choosing your community college classes!!! When I went to register for my classes for this year at BC I couldn't take ANY of the classes I actually wanted to take because I had already fulfiled all of the gen ed/ elective credit requirements and I got stuck with all boring classes I don't even like! And, hopefully you will get your college credits. I remember my Anatomy/Physiology & AP Biology classes last year were supposed to be college credit classes, and were still taught to the college syllabus and grading scale, but once the classes got over we found out the teachers didn't get their certification in time for us to get the credits. My AP Bio teacher wasn't even certified to be teaching AP classes!!! But, we could all kind of tell that already. Yuck. I am glad to be done with that part of high school.
Oh and congrats to Amanda on the Who Am I win. I always think I do really well and then I always miss the most! Oh well, they are still always fun to see the results, Thanks Gary :)

8/14/07
Well summer is finally coming to an end :(. Kind of depressing but I got my schedule and I will only be in class from 8-11:30 so it's not bad. Here's my schedule:
My two college classes I will be getting college credit for through Southeast. I took two last year (Statistics and Economics) which I also received credit for. Just trying to get a head start and get some classes out of the way!
As a student ambassador, I'm working in the counseling center helping out with scheduling appointments and working with the counselors. Should be interesting but I really just did it because I had an open spot for a class.
I'm also going to be meeting with an academic advisor from Southeast and try to take a couple college classes starting in October when Southeast's school year starts. Not sure what I'll be able to take that will fit with my schedule but the more I can get done the better!
I have my senior pictures this Thursday. I'm getting them done with Purple Sky (if anyone's ever heard of them?). I'm excited for them but also ready for them to be done so it's one less thing to worry about!

Gary, I'm surprised you haven't mentioned Karl Rove leaving the white house so he can spend more time with his family. I haven't heard any details. Why is he really leaving?
Well, the best one-sentence comment so far was from John Edwards: "Goodbye and good riddance." But the problem is, he won't really be gone until someone drives a stake through his heart. He can continue to dismantle the Constitution just as easily from Texas as he did from the White House. But yes, the real question is: Why is he really leaving? By default I never believe anything coming from this administration, so none of the three "official" reasons for his departure can be the real one. My first thought was: He's ridden the Bush pony as far as he can, so he was leaving to get involved in Romney's or Thompson's or Giuliani's campaign. But the thing is, none of the other Republicans really like him any more than the Democrats do. Rove's whole career has been getting Bush Jr. into power, and he didn't care who he stepped on -- Democrat or Republican -- to do it. So a new round of campaigning is probably not it. I'm thinking it has more to do with the Senate investigations. His name comes up an awful lot in those hearings, and what we hear is no doubt just the tip of the iceberg of what they know. So Rove may have felt the boom about to be lowered. I'm also reading rumors about Rove's name surfacing in the Jack Abramoff lobbyist-bribery investigation (which is still ongoing), so something may be happening there too. Bottom line, I don't know; but I do know we haven't heard the last of him. Hopefully on that happy day, we will see him being led away wearing an orange jumpsuit... --Gary

Thanks for the new review, Lindsey. It sounds like a remake of that great Alfred Hitchcock/Jimmy Stewart movie, "Rear Window."

Sounds like everyone had a good time at Great Wolf Lodge. A nice weekend to be near the water. Hopefully this heat and humidity will give us a break soon. Be happy to set extra plates at the table, Amanda. Just figuring the menu a while ago. My ambition is at low tide! I haven"t even started "Harry Potter" yet but did finish "Water for Elephants." Recommend it for a good summer read. Also we watched "The Astronaut Farmer" and really enjoyed it, highly recommend it! See you for supper! We may not measure up to a "High School Musical Party," but we'll try.

Great Wolf Lodge was a blast! The girls had fun, I think we are all still tired today! Ryan, I & the girls left early Friday morning & got to Nebraska City at about 8:45. We went to the Arbor Day Farm Tree Adventures. We got there early enough that the nature walk & exploratory walk wasn't too hot. We finished out Nebraska City at the Arbor Day Lodge, which was great, the girls loved it. We'd like to go back & spend a little more time there, as we were rushing just a bit at that point to get to KC. As Livy said, Joe's Crab Shack was great! We hadn't had it in a long time!
School starts in a week, WOW! The girls have all their supplies & new shoes. Not getting much else yet, gonna wait til it cools down, then go shopping for winter type stuff.
Went to Ribfest today. It was HOT outside, but the food was SO good! Sean, Lindsey, Ryan, Tristen & I got ribs from 4 different places, so we all shared. Muy bueno!
We have a busier week ahead of us, Tristen has a birthday party to go to Tuesday night, they both have Open House at school Thursday night & Tristen has a High School Musical 2 party Friday night to go to. Teghan was a little bummed about that, since she LOVES High School Musical.
Actually, Grandma, that reminds me. This Tuesday night, mind if we come over for dinner? Since Tristen is at that party & has the other one Friday it would be nice to let Teghan do something different. So, if you can set the table for 3 more Tuesday night, that would be great! Ryan & I have somewhere to be at 7, but we can leave Teghan & get her when we're done, if ya don't mind?? And did you finish Harry Potter?

"Hey everybody! This is Olivia reporting LIVE from the Great Wolf Lodge! Warm and sunny weather today, slight breeze coming in the west side when you stand in line for yellow slide! New outdoor swimming pool complete with warm salty water, and lovely tropical music playing for your enjoyment! New mini golf course installed when we arrived! Rooms looking nice as usual, and the arcade is still the same GREAT arcade! Joes Crab Shack has amazing food, and fun colored tye-dye t-shirts to buy!!! I recommend staying at this lovely and glorious hotel when you are near and ready to stay in a rented room for a while! Even if it is only one night, still worth it! Come soon, and Joes Crab Shack, and Petco!!! All part of the trip! This is Olivia reporting LIVE from Great Wolf Lodge saying over and out!!!"

The "Who Am I" results are up. Congratulations to...the winner (no spoilers here!), and thanks to everybody who played the game.
I agree that this one was pretty hard. Almost every one of the wrong answers could just as easily be right! Each one of us could be described by two, or three, or four, of those profiles.... But anyway, I hope it was fun for y'all.

Hey there everyone! Oh man Who Am I was hard! I guessed on everyone I only knew my familys because they told me who they were. Other than that I do believe i pretty much got everyone wrong!
Thanks for playing, Sam. Check back this weekend to see how you did! --Gary

Cool, Teghan starts kindergarten and I start college on the same day. Only 10 more days until I move in... I would like some more summer vacation.
I am ready to see the Who Am I results!! Hopefully everybody should have had more than enough time to get their answers in by now?
Well, Amanda has joined the party, bringing the number of players up to seven. Tomorrow is the last last last last last final day to get your answers in, if anybody is still listening! Results will be up first thing Saturday morning. --Gary

Yeah I was at a party last night and we were all out in the garage when it started thundering and downpouring. I was out by Coddington and West A so not sure what the weather was like in town. At least we're finally getting some rain to go along with this god dang humidity!!
Donna

That storm woke me up last night too. I didn't look outside but some of the lightening strikes did seem to surround the house. I had to wait a bit this morning for the heavy rain to stop before I got on the road. I timed it well -- no rain for the commute. A few hours later, a semi overturned on I-80 by the river and both lanes are still closed. It took one of my coworkers who lives in Lincoln hours to get here, they rerouted her to highway 6 with backed up traffic, and heavy rain. Yuck.
Although I couldn't see it by the way I come to work, I was told there were 12,000 people waiting outside Quest for American Idol tryouts at 7:30 this morning. I don't know if they were finally let inside, but it's been raining hard here off and on all morning. Rumor here is that Simon (and the other 2) will be here Thursday night and staying at the Hilton...

Wow, sounds like Lincoln is getting big storms. We had a little rain yesterday and more to come today, nothing too severe, now it is just dreary and very humid! Not much going on with us, just waiting out the last few days of summer vacation. Emily is done with her summer classes and has almost two weeks before she moves into her dorm. Anxious to see the answers for Who Am I.
I guess this "Who Am I" was too hard -- nobody wants to try it. It has been up for nine days now, and only you six (Emily, Erika, Grandma, Karen, Lindsey, and Tristen) have joined in. Even Livy -- who requested it! -- has been a no-show.... --Gary

I don't know what the weather was like in your neighborhood last night, but in mine it was wild. I was awakened at 2 in the morning by what I thought was a strobe light coming through the curtains. I could also hear thunder, but it was not just an occasional rumble but continuous, like a waterfall. I got out of bed and went to the back door so I could see the Capitol -- which I use as a sort of weather-gauge. The lightning was almost constant, and the light was bright blue-white, enough to almost read by. Also, the rain was pouring down in buckets. Suddenly there was a blinding strike right in my line of vision, with a bolt that looked as big as a tree-trunk and an immediate CRASH like swinging an axe through a stack of dishes. And within thirty seconds, another one just like it, right in my neighborhood. Now, I'm going to give away here a "Who Am I" clue for those of you who haven't done yours yet: I was one of the thirteen people who said they find thunderstorms "exciting." But at this point I got a little scared.... So I closed the door and went back to bed. And slept til around 5:30, when the storm woke me up again, with more lightning and loud thunder. Even now, at 8:30 here in my office, we're still getting rain and the dark sky is full of mean-looking clouds whirling around. What a night!

Hey, where are all the Who Am I players??? Deadline for answers is Friday. Here it is Tuesday already and only Emily, Erika, Grandma, Karen, Lindsey, and Tristen have sent in their guesses so far. If Tristen can take a few minutes from her busy schedule to get involved, why can't you?

Interesting letter today on one of the Democratic sites, from a Minnesotan:
I have lived in Minnesota my whole life, and never before have I witnessed a tragedy like yesterday's. Today I have been sitting on the internet frequently checking to see if they have released any of the names of those who are dead or missing yet hoping that I won't see the names of any of my neighbors or friends. But I know that 35W is one of the most busy freeways in the state, and I know that many of the Minnesotans I have grown to love over the years travel that road on a daily basis.
Today I think every resident of the Twin Cities area is feeling a little bit of fear because we don't know who is laying at the bottom of the Mississippi River, and we fear that the news that is yet to come will be even more difficult to take than what we have already witnessed.
Those of us who grew up in this state were very privileged. We lived in a state where people took care of one another. We had some of the best social services in the nation, some of the best health care in the nation, some of the best education in the nation, and yes some of the best roads in the nation.
But lately we have watched our great state fall apart. We have a Republican Governor who has been so adamantly anti-tax that he has been willing to sacrifice all the things that have made Minnesota a great state to live in.
Just a few months ago we watched this man veto a transportation bill because it contained a five cent a gallon increase in the gas tax in order provide for better transit and repairs to our crumbling infrastructure.
Today when us Minnesotans reach down into our pockets to pull out some change we will look at the nickels we pull out and think that if we would have spent that extra nickel at the gas station that maybe this problem would have been taken more seriously. The nickel that I will very likely end up throwing into my penny jar and not touch for months or years to come could have been used to save lives, yet the Republicans beat themselves on the chest bragging about how they saved that nickel for us taxpayers.
You know what I want to say to the Republicans? I don't want that nickel, I want that bridge back. I only wish I could have the people who are currently laying underneath that bridge back as well. But I can't have them back, because the Republicans have decided that our nickels are more important than our safety.
No one that I know of thought that the 35W bridge was dangerous, but we were proven wrong and now we just hope pray that we won't be proven wrong again and we hope that all the other bridges we drive over are safe. We hope they are safe, but we know that as long as we have those extra nickels in our pocket we can not have as much confidence that they really are safe.
I want Governor Pawlenty to have that nickel that he saved me on my morning commute. That is why tomorrow morning I will be mailing him a nickel. If he is so proud that he saved me a nickel, well then he can have my nickel I don't want it. I want him to look at that nickel and realize the loss of life that nickel represents. I want him to look at that nickel and think about the bodies at the bottom of that river, I want him to look at that nickel and I want him to think about all the rescue workers who risk their lives swimming in a polluted river and trying to avoid sharp debris while the current pulls them. And I want him to think about all the families right now who are in a state of emotional wreck because of the nickel that he saved them.
Tomorrow I will be mailing my nickel, I would encourage everyone else to do the same.

When do guesses need to be in for Who Am I? I haven't had time, but I'll get to it this weekend. Some of them put me in a Christmas mood, though the Carol of the Bells song/video about gave me a seizure!
Certainly you've got this weekend. Responses are coming in pretty slowly, so no doubt it will go into next week. Howsabout if we set a deadline for one week from today -- next Friday, August 10 -- for all guesses to be in? Okay with everyone? Let me know. --Gary

Well, we are all immersed in the terrible bridge collapse here. The bridge is about 2 to 3 miles from our house, we have of course used this bridge, but I always drive the side streets in the city because I35 is always so crowded and fast. Sam and her boyfriend Mark were on the bridge a few days ago. My co-worker's niece was on her way to HCMC (the hospital featured in all the news stories, also the hospital where Sam worked) to visit her sister and newborn baby there and was just about to cross the bridge when she said all the cars just vanished. She was 5 cars back from the collapse. She was ok, but in such shock. They all had to back up and get off the freeway. Response from the people who were there before the police and fire was tremendous. Police, fire and hospital response was also heralded as excellent. Mom, I know you have been under that bridge as we have gone to Broadway Pizza and other places along River Road. I suppose you have about as much information on the situation as we do, since it is on the national news so much, I turned on BBC news this a.m. and there was just about the same coverage. On a better note, John is finished with his radiation treatments. The treatments have given him some very bad side effects and the doctor thought that he could forgo the final two. He has been resting and regaining some of his energy. Anna comes back from California on Saturday, she has been having quite a good time, but is ready to sleep in her own bed! Thanks to you all for your calls, texts, etc!!

And for the record, if no one had figured out (and after talking to Lindsey, I realize some didn't figure it out) I assisted W in posting his profile for our Who Am I?
Thanks for clearing that up! I thought it might be you, but only because it arrived just a little after Teghan's "Who Am I" arrived.... Very funny! I liked the time machine part. :-) --Gary

Someone else just today told me about Hagel's plan (probably read that same article). Interesting. Though off the top without knowing much about his plan, I think infrastructure should be paid for with taxes, not private money. That's what taxes are for! (I.e., the things we all have and use in common, like the army and public education, for example.) Some members of Congress shake their heads and tsk-tsk about how much it would cost to properly maintain our roads and bridges and power grids -- one plan said to bring everything up to standard would cost seven and a half billion dollars every year for the next twenty years. The American people would never accept an expenditure like that, right? Except that we're spending nearly ten billion every month in Iraq right now. So for the cost of a little more than a year in Iraq, we could repair all the infrastructure problems caused by twenty years of Republican neglect.
Hagel's staffer did tell me her (first) name, but I'm afraid I've forgotten it. She called between 6:30 and 7 (or 7:30 and 8, Washington time). I mentioned she was putting in a long day and she said yes, but I was the last item on her to-do list. And yes, I have called Hagel's office at least once before, and no, I was not so much a fan then... So I will be a bit of data in that research project. When I get Hagel's letter, I'll post it here! :-)
Amanda
8/2/07
Gary, since you are such a Hagel fan now I thought this article & his ideas are VERY interesting in light of what happened just hours after this article was published.
And for the record, you told his staffer (did you get a name, by the way?) that you weren't a Republican & you never voted for Hagel... If you have ever called there to voice an opinion they already know all that in their little file... So, it would be an interesting research project for his office to assist in his presidency run decision to look through old comments to his office vs. what the old naysayers think now.

Been watching the news -- still lots on about the Minneapolis bridge. So glad to hear that Hatgidakis weren't near it. Is that one that you guys use a lot? Brent and I just got home -- took a short anniversary trip. We left yesterday for Omaha. Stayed at the Ameristar. Did some gambling (not much winning), ate lots, saw the train museum and did some shopping. Nice time! Brent took the rest of the week off, so he still has a nice long week-end.

A few more thoughts on this, and then I'll shut up:
I just heard that Bush said this in the Rose Garden this morning: "We in the federal government must respond, and respond robustly, to help the people there not only recover, but to make sure that lifeline of activity -- that bridge -- gets rebuilt as quickly as possible." I'm sure that's a relief to the residents of the Twin Cities, unless they recall what Bush said on September 15, 2005, just a few days after Katrina: "And tonight I also offer this pledge of the American people: Throughout the area hit by the hurricane, we will do what it takes, we will stay as long as it takes, to help citizens rebuild their communities and their lives." Ha.
Actually, though, I'll bet that this bridge does get rebuilt fast. The Republican Convention is in Minneapolis next year, and they will want all the news cameras to photograph the shiny new bridge.... Someone on one of the Democratic newsgroups said this morning, "If the Republican Convention had been scheduled for New Orleans, it would look like Paris by now."
Gary
8/2/07
I didn't see it myself, but I'm told a reporter on CNN (though not necessarily a CNN reporter -- maybe a local reporter) on the scene in Minneapolis actually told the truth this morning. Hopefully it won't cost him his job.
He stated that America's infrastructure has been allowed to deteriorate, giving the examples of the underground pipes in Manhattan that exploded a few weeks ago spewing asbestos-laden steam all over the area, the failure of the levees in New Orleans when Katrina hit, and now this Interstate bridge in Minneapolis. He said that many of the bridges that you or I will be driving on today have the same safety ratings as the one that collapsed, and it would take billions of dollars to fix them all. But, he went on, when you're spending billions and billions in Iraq, there's nothing left for America, so now we've given up our own public safety for a war in another country.
Again, I don't know who that was, but a clip should be showing up on YouTube soon. Actually, one could go even further on that line of thinking: It may just be a Bush/Republican strategy to let things fail and fall down, just to put it in peoples' minds that the government is really inept at maintaining the infrastructure and therefore it should be privatized -- by turning it over, for example, to Halliburton....
And if you think it is unfair of me to assign the blame for this bridge collapse to George Bush (as I so predictably do), be aware that Bush this morning is blaming ... wait for it ... the Democrats! He said he would have authorized funds for infrastructure maintenance, but the budget the Democrats gave him was "fiscally irresponsible" so he wouldn't sign it. Never mind that the Democrats have only been in power for little more than six months; the Republicans were making the budget for the past six years and they included such gems as the "bridge to nowhere." The money to build that would have come in handy in New Orleans, or Minneapolis.
Gary

I know everyone is focussed on the Minneapolis bridge story, so the newsletter page is kind of quiet right now. Thankfully none of our Minnesotans were driving around at that hour last night.
So, even though we're all a little distracted right now, let me just record here a phone call I got last night. The speaker identified herself as a staffer in Sen. Hagel's office in Washington, and she wanted to convey a quick thank-you from Hagel for my recent letter to the Journal-Star. We had a brief conversation where I pointed out that I was not a Republican and had never voted for Hagel but I nevertheless appreciated his opposition to the Iraq war and his willingness to not march in lock-step with Bush. She confirmed my address and told me I could expect a "personal note" from Hagel. I gotta say (and I'm sure Amanda will attest), a very nicely-run outfit Hagel's got there. :-)
P.S. Only four players in the Who Am I contest so far -- Emily, Erika, Karen, and Lindsey. Hope the rest of you will take a few minutes to send in your guesses soon. The sooner your guesses arrive, the sooner I can reveal the answers!
