Well we had a full day of sledding today! Amanda, Ryan, Tristen, Teghan, Little Ryan, and me and Liv all went out to the big hills up at Kahoa and went sledding, then went over by the new house looking for hills but no luck so we went to Braeda's for lunch! Really good! Then Sean met us there and we went for more sledding and then Dad came up and did some sledding with us. A few of us attempted to try and snowboard down the hill on those disc sleds--that didn't end so well and Amanda has the videos to prove it! Lot's of cool pictures though! Had a blast!

P.S Max LOVES the snow!!!

Thanks everyone for the Christmas gifts!
Woke up and we are getting a lot of snow!! And it's still coming down pretty steady. Hope we get a lot because we haven't had any snow at all this winter! One of my friends is up in Colorado for the break and he told me about how they got a huge blizzard there and that it was supposed to be heading into Nebraska and I was like "yeah...right!" but last night on our way out to dinner with Amanda's and Sean we heard about western Nebraska getting some pretty bad snow storms so looks like we're next! Me and Liv go back to school the 3rd, not looking forward to it!
Hope you had a good birthday Teghan! Looked like you got a lot of cool stuff!

Happy New Years!

Well, us ex-Texan residents are LOVING the snow. The girls & I rushed to Target to get all the necessities that we haven't had for 4 years (snow suits, boots, waterproof gloves, sled, window ice scrapers) and came home & they have been out in it ever since! Got hot water ready & a fire in the basement, what a day! Gary's got photos that I just sent too!

We are getting snow this morning. Had steady rain for the last two days, finally turned to snow last night. Emily was to work until 3 today, but called after just an hour and said they were sending people home because of the weather. Emily is feeling better, able to eat a more solid food. Fixing lots of hors d'oeuvres for our snacking today. Probably watch a movie or two. Brent got me a new flat screen, wall mounted TV for the bedroom so I've been watching it a lot. What did everyone else get? Haven't really heard from anyone this year. Amanda, Lindsey and Olivia -- I hope you all liked the gifts from us :) Gary -- I'm surprised you get Tuesday off -- thought that would just apply to govt employees. Brent doesn't get the day off. That will be our last day off.

I was a little surprised, too, but I am a state employee after all. Thanks, by the way, for the Day 25 book on Roman art and architecture. I've read through quite a bit of it already, and it has really brought back some memories -- a great many of the things featured in that book I saw, in person! Yeah, it has been a little quiet here since Christmas -- everyone is playing with their toys, I suppose. :-) --Gary

Hi everyone I just wanted to say thank you to Donna, I really like the E key chain, Grandma, I have the calendar up on my wall, and the picture holders on my shelf, Gary, I like to look at the book you gave us, and Olivia I really like areopostale.

Morning, everybody, on this last day of the year. And it's a snowy one in all three of our cities, with this same big storm stretching north and south from Kansas to Canada. As you may know, our webcam page needs a tune-up (that's one of my new years's resolutions), so to see what Lincoln's snow looks like, see this page of Lincoln webcams -- lots of different views there. Supposed to snow all day, with a winter storm advisory in effect. Looks like a good day to stay inside....

I got word a few days ago that the campus will be closed on the 2nd in honor of Gerald Ford, meaning I get one more day tacked on to the end of my Christmas vacation.

Happy New Year, everybody!

Dang, I just learned I neglected to put Emily's new review up, after mentioning it below a few days ago. My fault! Sorry, Emily! It's there now, so check it out, everybody. (How are you feeling, Emily?)
Donna
12/29/06
Hey Emily, glad you're feeling okay. I had no problems at all when I got my wisdom teeth out. I didn't take my teeth but I think it's an old wive's tale about losing your wisdom when the teeth come out so a lot of people want to save the teeth.
It feels like spring here, way too warm. I wanted a white Christmas but now I hope we don't get any snow at all. It's raining here now.
Gary
12/28/06
Thanks for the new review, Emily. And enjoy the pancakes! :-)
Emily
12/28/06
We are having a very mild winter as well. No snow and not too cold, I hope it stays like that!
We had a nice Christmas on Monday as well, lots of nice presents. I got a really nice and personalized picture frame from Grandma, I just need to decide where to put it up at! Donna gave me a really cool "e" key ring! And, Gary gave me some fun ipod covers and an itunes gift card, which I have already started to use. Thanks everybody, I love it all!! :)
My wisdom teeth are all gone now, but they did give them back to me. I guess a lot of people actually want to keep their old teeth, they had little teeth envelopes. Anyway, it all went pretty well, and I really don't remember much of that day. And with help from the heavy duty pain pills, I am feeling pretty good. Still eating soup and pudding, but tonight we are going to try pancakes -- fun.

Hope you have a happy birthday Teghan, any big plans??

Guess everyone must have had a good christmas -- not much on the page for the last couple of days. We had very nice evening with the Nelson family on Christmas eve. We all slept late and opened presents about 10 Christmas morning. Thanks for all the great presents. Lindsey thanks for your gift -- it makes the whole house smell great -- I haven't seen anything like that before. Ryan -- Brent has one the shirts on today -- they fit and he always loves a new Nebraska shirt. Mom -- I have the slippers on now, very comfy. used the pot holder yesterday and it works great. Donna -- I love all the fun stuff in the basket, the socks are so soft, I put the candle next to the glass jars on the buffet -- it matches the green ones perfectly. Marsha -- I didn't even call you on Christmas -- I love the calendar and will have to bake a few of the those cakes. I really needed a new photo album -- have tons of pictures filling boxes -- so now I will have to put them in order. Gary -- the book is great (and hard) and the candy is disappearing fast. Hope I didn't forget anyone -- it was all very nice and much appreciated!

Emily had her wisdom teeth removed yesterday. Didn't take very long at all and it went very well. She was pretty goofy for a couple of hours and we all laughed at her trying to eat (drool). Took a couple of pain pills and went to bed early, she should be doing much better today. Hope to go to mall to spend some gift cards this afternoon. Brent had a home project going yesterday. Had some water damage in the entryway -- it happened quite awhile ago, but then he got and sick and it got forgotten. So first thing yesterday he started to tear down the wall. Had it all fixed and drying before the day was over. I will need to paint in there, but not any time soon. I did take down the tree and most the decorations yesterday. Hadn't planned to do it so soon, but the the dust coming from the construction, I thought I may as well.

Gary, What -- you didn't like the picture of the Bush's?? I can't imagine why. We did actually think about making it into a dart board -- so feel free to damage it in any way at all :) Quiet day around here today -- being very lazy and relaxed. Emily, Erika and I did go to the mall yesterday. Mostly just to watch the people, wasn't too bad. I used a couple of gift cards that I had received. Brent was released early from the office and he is now also off until the 2nd. I remember always getting to choose a cookie, but I can't remember what one I chose.
Gary
12/23/06
Karen, thanks for Days 19, 20, 21, and 22 (love the glow-in-the-dark golfball -- very pretty, I keep it under the lamp by my bed, and it glows all night). Day 23, however, is another matter. How could you do that to someone, without warning?!? As I tore the paper from this nicely-wrapped package, it became obvious that it was a picture frame -- so I'm expecting to see a family photo, or a picture of Emily or Erika. But I turn it over and...aaaaagggh! George and Laura Bush! Thanks for the frame, though! :-)

Marsha, I don't remember which cookie I requested, but I do remember the marshmallow-topped chocolate cookies. Yum! I also remember helping to make them once, and my task was to cut the marshmallows in half with a pair of kitchen scissors. Sticky. Those cookies must have been a real pain-in-the-neck to frost....

We all have been enjoying the Nelson and Anderson treats. Mom used to let us each pick a favorite cookie for Christmas and she would make a batch, a lot of cookie making! I would always pick the chocolate cookie with a half marshmallow topped with an awesome fudge frosting. Do you remember your picks siblings? I had to work all day, but it was a fun day with gifts and treats in our little department. I need to do some grocery shopping tomorrow and some cooking...just finished a batch of fudge and Sam has sure made a bunch of cookies this year. Emily, just think of Christmas for now and put all thoughts of tooth surgery on hold! Gary, how was your party?

Party was ok, but not a huge success this year. Only six or seven guests showed up. Last year we must have had forty people come by, maybe more -- and lots of great food. This year we had a couple of desserts, and several variations on coleslaw. Luckily one of the people from my office brought a crockpot full of those little weenies in barbecue sauce, or it would have been all vegetarian. (I brought potato chips, sun chips, and dip.) We speculated that, because of the threatening weather (which never materialized), a lot of people either left early or stayed home. But we kept the tradition alive for another year. --Gary

Lindsey
12/22/06
Last day before break! Finally! Yeah the front page kind of got me in a trance for a minute! Got all my Christmas presents bought and wrapped except for one so I need to finish that up tonight probably and then be done! We're having Christmas Eve here for my Mom's side of the family this year and then like Amanda said Christmas morning here at the house and then Grandma's in the afternoon. I have all next week off school and work so that'll be a nice break! I think me and my Dad are going to try and go down to Weston in Missouri for a day to go skiing, that is if it gets cold enough for them to make some snow. Not much other news though.
Amanda
12/22/06
Emily, I have to work Friday ALL DAY, no half day for me Gary. The girls are still in school all day tomorrow too. Lincoln forgot what a good Christmas break was like... And Ryan works Friday night... BUT, Saturday morning we are going to my moms for Christmas there all day. Then Sunday, Christmas Eve we are going out to Metalfs for Christmas there. Then Monday, Christmas Day, we are getting up & doing Christmas here with the girls then heading to my dads then BACK here for Christmas at Grandmas at 2 maybe... Luckily I took Tuesday off to recover from all that! The girls go back to school January 3rd. Ryan is back to work Tuesday too.
I wish someone at the Hatgidakis' had a digital camera, you could send us a photo on Christmas Day of Santa Sunny!

OH, and I LOVE the picture today, LOVE the falling snow!

Thanks; and thanks for the countdown Home Makeover item. --Gary

I wish I could see Sunny in a Christmas reindeer suit, sounds like fun! Thanks for the box too, the rasberry chip cookies were my favorite! We also got the Lincoln box a few days ago. The cranberry cookies and peanutbutter balls were espcially big hits around here, and we can't wait to open all the presents! Thanks everybody!
Today was our first official day for Christmas break! Is everyone else off yet?? We all went out for lunch at the new Minerva's and then I had dance. Tomorrow we don't plan on doing much, except for my AP Psychology final in the morning and dance. Nothing too special on Saturday either, just work and dance for me. But, on Sunday, after I get off work, we will be heading up to Nelsons for Christmas with them. And, just the four of us at home for a nice Christmas day. Then of couse, my tooth surgery the next day :(
What are the plans for everyone else??

It is nice to hear about everyone's activities this time of year, we had our office party today too, plenty of food and gifts. I like the idea of Gary's Stragglers and Survivors party. It looks like this latest storm may give all of us a white Christmas, I hope so. I need to wrap and finish up a few more things in the kitchen. We are having honey baked ham for Christmas, finger foods for Christmas Eve. Sam got Sunny a Christmas reindeer suit so he will be looking sharp on Christmas.
Gary
12/20/06
Thanks. (And thanks, Donna.) But again, it wasn't to get compliments -- I only said that because I really liked the way today's page came out. Something about that solid woodcut, and the falling snow. :-)

I've got less than two days to go: finish out today, all day tomorrow, then on Friday we've agreed to shut down at noon. We just now had our "Stragglers and Survivors" party: Every year, in this last week before Christmas when almost all the students and professors and everyone else have fled, we host a pot-luck lunch in our library. (Which, if you haven't seen it, is a really nice big room.) Anyone who is still here in the building is invited to attend, with food or not, and we take a long long lunch hour. It has become a tradition people look forward to (they tell us). And it's always well attended -- even though the building feels empty, we always get a good crowd.

Yippee.... I am done with work for two weeks!! Just got home, now I need a coffee and some of the goodies from the box. Emily and Erika get off in an hour. Our nasty weather is just rain so far, but we too are at 35 so it won't be too great later, but I don't have to go anywhere. I have enjoyed all the front pages too, sorry -- I should mention it sometimes. Helps to put me in the spirit.
Gary
12/20/06
Attention webcam fans: I made a few changes. One of the cams on the first page never worked right, so I substituted a webcam overlooking the tree in Rockefeller Center. (Just now found this one; I had looked before, but couldn't find one that worked on our page. This one does!)

On the second page, the Alamo-cam had been frozen for like a week now. (I finally realized that one guy had been standing there for a looong time...) So I put in its place a cam overlooking a street of shops in Meersburg, Germany. Enjoy!

P.S. Also on the second page, I put in a new cam from Osijek, Croatia, in place of the Snoqualmie ski-slope cam which had also been inactive for a while.

Donna
12/20/06
That is a nice looking front page today. They've all looked really nice. And another great quote today. I vote to double your pay.

Karen, glad you got the boxes. Yeah, I'm working from home today and the freezing rain better start soon or I'll look like a wimp for not driving in. So far all we've had is the rain but the temp is 33 so it could turn any time. And tomorrow more rain and snow. Teghan will be so happy to see it snow. ;-)

I think staying home was a good decision, based on what we were hearing last night. Early this morning, one of the local news channels sent a reporter to a truck stop near Lincoln to interview drivers coming in from the west. One trucker said, "Find yourself a hole, and pull it in after you." What I'm hearing now is that it is supposed to stay above freezing most or all of today, and possibly get nasty tonight or tomorrow. Got enough hot chocolate to get you through another day...? --Gary

Gary
12/20/06
I'm not fishing for compliments or anything, but I have to say today's front page is my favorite Christmas page so far. If I worked for me, I would ask myself for a raise -- and I think I might give me one!
Karen
12/19/06
The Lincoln boxes just arrived!! Thanks for everything :) The goodies look delicious. We are all hoping for the nasty weather to get us a late start tomorrow, then we already have an early out -- so no school. The weatherman said freezing rain and drizzle to start overnight and then snow.

Same weather expected here. Donna said she will probably take a snow day, but no such luck for the University (me) -- most students and teachers are already gone! --Gary

Gary
12/19/06
Okay, just in time for Christmas -- not this Christmas, next Christmas -- the Contact Page has been updated, somewhat. Sean just sent me his latest info, so he's current. (Thanks, Sean!) I moved the Metcalfs out of Texas and over to Orchard Street. (I would have put your new address but I don't have it -- something Spur Drive??) Anyway, the page is more current than it was, anyway!
Donna
12/19/06
Marsha, I got your box yesterday too. Love the Swedish tin. There's one present with no tag. The other one is marked to me from Sam and Anna. Can't wait to try all the goodies. They look great. Thanks!

Gary, there's stuff with your name on it too. I'll bring it over tonight.

Woo-hoo! (I'll take the one with no tag!) The Minnesota parcel (from us) arrived in Eagan, MN, around noon -- should be in your house tomorrow. And the Sioux City shipment is in Sioux City -- that could be UPS at the door right now! --Gary

Karen

Marsha, your box came today! Thanks!!! The fudge is going fast and the cookies will be our dessert tonight. It is delicious!!

Thanks, Karen, for Days 15, 16, 17, and 18. The paddle-ball was a big hit with Teghan -- and with Tristen, who is much better at it than I am. I never did get the hang of those things....

Forgot to mention that your box was delivered to my office the next day, and that night I had a bed-night snack of tiny bread and hot chocolate. And also the next night, except with the spiced cider which was in that day's package. Thanks! ("Tiny bread," as you have probably gathered, is Tristen's nickname for those little pumpkin and pear loaves you made, and we've all adopted the name.)

We shipped boxes to Sioux City and Minneapolis on Saturday. Sioux City, expect yours Tuesday or Wednesday; Minneapolis, Wednesday or Thursday.

And one week from today is Christmas day!

The UPS guy always leaves mine at my front door too.
I got groceries last night and will be baking Saturday AM and then we'll be boxing the stuff up this weekend. The grocery store was busy. I bought the last bottle of Karo syrup and they were out of two things I wanted for baking so I had to improvise. ;-)

Work health update: The health officials won't know for a few more days but they think it's the norovirus -- not food poisoning. And they just cancelled our big Gallup Christmas party at noon today because we still have so many out sick.

The UPS thing has to do with neighborhoods (sorry Gary) & the house/apartment thing. Our UPS in Texas would always drop it at the door, but twice they dropped it at a house on a whole other street. So I called to complain & asked what the policy was. They said its up to the driver and how he feels about leaving it, or you can put a specific note attached to your address, like "yes drop it at the door," or "no take it with you my neighbors are thieves." I remember when Sean was at his apartment on 10th street he had the same issue, he could never get packages & it would go on for days!

Yeah, that is the issue -- I meant to mention that before. I don't have a front porch, just a sidewalk visible to the entire street; and a locked front door shared by up to six apartment-dwellers. So I wouldn't really want them to just leave a box by the front door. And people do take stuff: Part of my job is sending out testing materials to people who will examine and review them for us. I recently sent a test kit -- valued at around $1000 -- to a reviewer whose UPS guy (I found out later) just left it at her front door. Weeks later she wrote me and asked when I was going to send it.... --Gary

Karen
12/13/06
Gary, What?? You have to pick it up at UPS? Thats sucks!! I had NO idea that they did that. They always leave ours by the door when we're gone. I went to UPS only because I thought it would be less of a hassle than the post office and I also thought it was usually cheaper. I found it to be neither, so next time it will be good old post office. Sorry you have to pick it up :)

Not a problem, really. Ideally, after I get the first sticky, I can call UPS and have them re-deliver the package to my office the next day -- which is what they will do tomorrow. The tricky part is you have to call them at just the right time, for some reason (after delivery is attempted but before the truck comes back to the warehouse), otherwise they try to deliver it to the same place the next day. Or, you can call them and have them hold it for pickup at the warehouse the following day. Anyway, as I said, I made the call and they will bring it to my office tomorrow. Woo-hoo! :-) Thanks much! --Gary

Glad the boxes arrived OK. Donna, the bread was either pear, pumpkin or cranberry -- I don't remember who got what....

Aarrgh! I can't get mine til tomorrow, when I drive over to UPS to pick it up. I hate UPS! It's great, as long as you stay home all day; if not, they come when you're gone and leave little stickers on your door. I want my Tiny Bread! :-) --Gary

Karen, I got your box yesterday too. Thanks! It looks really good. What kind of bread is in the cute loaf pan?

Karen, Thanks for the 'Goodie Box'! It came just before we sat down for supper last night. And we devoured almost all of it. Tristen did love the Pumpkin bread! I'm thinking if I reheat the coffee, a cookie would be in order about now. Thanx so much, the first treats are always so welcome! Another warm and sunny day, hard to believe it will be Christmas in a few more days. Teghan has a 'Crafts and Cookies' day at school today. Emily, you sure know how to enjoy a vacation, I hope you hardly notice it! [the dentist part, I mean] Erika, I hope you don't have to have your braces tightened for a long time. Donna, funny story about the party -- did you attend? Gary, glad you like the gifts -- the Simpson guys came from a gumball machine -- thats why you got the ones you did! Okay this is kind of funny. Gallup had their family Christmas party Sunday and there are a lot of people out today with sick kids. Our lawyer just sent out an email to the managers asking for a list of everyone in their department that attended the party and that is also out sick today. They have to include all family memebers that attended as well. There will be an investigation to see if it was food contamination or just a flu bug. Ah, Merry Christmas.

An icy start here this morning. Had lots of thick fog most of the day yesterday, then rain started about noon, got just to 30 last night so tricky this morning. I feel like I am beginning to finally get in the christmas spirit. Brent and I went to a St Pauls party on Sunday. Kind of corny, but actually a very nice evening. They had a baby grand piano and the music teacher was there, so we were all soon singing around the piano. Followed that by a fantanstic meal and a treasure hunt. I have all of the my shopping done and cookies in the freezer. By the way, if you are Mom, Gary, Marsha or Donna -- look for the UPS man -- a box is on its way to you :)

Excellent! Thanks, by the way, for Days 9, 10, 11, and 12. Love the Simpsons miniatures -- never seen them before! --Gary

Wow, only 16 days til Christmas! It doesn't feel like it. I am doing good with shopping. I could finish up with one more good trip out, and almost everything is wrapped. And yet, it just doesn't feel like Christmas!
Today is parents day at dance so Ryan & I will go with cameras & camcorders. After that, it's lunch at my moms, then taking her & Shelby to see the progress on the house. Tonight Ryan & I are going to his work Christmas party. Burlington Northern throws it, and I guess its on their dime, with an open bar for an hour... Also, they have one of those Chinese gift exchanges, yuck, but whatever. So, we will go for awhile. Tristen was bummed she couldn't go.

Gary, glad you like the fan -- I thought that was one of the weirder presents -- never can tell..... Hey, thanks for the xmas cards, especially the Napoleon one -- the girls loved it! My Christmas shopping is almost done. Emily and I went to the mall last night and got a few more things. We got the new stove delivered this afternoon, I had planned to bake cookies this week-end, should be good time to try it out. Brent was home sick again today, thought he had the flu, but now he thinks it was the office party food! Erika is about to go to a slumber-birthday party so we won't see much of her this week-end. We had our cold day yesterday, high of about 15, even a pretty good snow fall on Wednesday afternoon, maybe an inch, but it sure came down for awhile. Planning to put up the tree this week-end and we have a christmas party on Sunday, so that should help get us in the mood.

Got to quote this, from the DailyKos site today:
As we look forward to the Democrats taking control of both houses of Congress in January, let's take a moment to say goodbye to the 109th Congress. On this, their last day in power, let's look at some of their accomplishments:

[*crickets*]

Okay, so what were they doing? Just off the top of my head:

Well, among the Party of honesty, personal responsibility and family values, Tom DeLay was resigning, Randy "Duke" Cunningham was heading to jail, while Mark Foley checked into rehab.

They saved us from our bad habits by passing the "Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act," and decided to build a 700 mile fence to secure a 1200+ mile border.

And in their boldest move, they decided to spit on the Constitution, the Geneva Conventions and human decency when they tossed out the concept of habeas corpus and made torture the official policy of the United States. Trashing more than 200 years of tradition and law... and people call them the do-nothing Congress.
Ha! :-)

Brrrrr. First real cold temperatures of the season, yesterday and today. So naturally the heating system at my place chooses now to have problems. It still works, but puts out only a low level of heat, no matter how high you turn the thermostat: turn it up to 80, and it only warms up to around 66 or so. So somebody is coming out to look at it today.

Thanks, Karen, for Days 5, 6, 7, and 8! I always wanted one of those little hand-held fans. And the cocoa this morning really hit the spot (see above paragraph).

How's everybody doing on Christmas shopping? Not so well here. After having no ideas for a long time, I finally found three different items online that I wanted to get. Ordered them. And was notified by email last night and this morning that two of them are back-ordered and won't arrive til sometime in January. Nertz!

Hi Tristen, I'm not double-jointed either. It sounds like it would be fun though. I bet you're the only one in the family!

Hey everybody! Just watching the football game right now, GO NEBRASKA!!! Hope they win! We are doing pretty good so far though. But me, Tristen and Teghan are watching the AKC dog show right now, and a Ceaser dog won in his category 5th place. We are watching it in the basement, because Ryan got the cable hooked up a little while ago in the basement, and we have been spending a lot of time down here. Oh, and me and Tristen both got our dog collars a few weeks ago. We also got a license, first I got a blue dog bone, and it said I DON'T FETCH on two lines. I love it!!!! Everybody at school said they loved it and wanted one. At kahoa, i set a trend for a dog collar, and now at Lux I set one as well. Tristen got her license a few days later and it says dog's best friend. It's really cool too. Oh, I gotta go, talk to you all later!!!

Hey everybody! I am just over at Grandma's today, mom and dad went to the parade this morning, but I slept in a little, but not long. I saw them leaving and got to say good-bye. Then when they came back, mom had bought like it's lights to go outside, and they are formed like Christmas presents and we are going to put them under the tree we have out front, to look like a christmas tree! We are going to put lights up on the tree out front like we always do too. I also got most of my christmas shopping done, I went with mom and Grandma Megrue. It was fun! I got most of my shopping done there, in Omaha, we went to a couple different places, and got home around 5:30 and Tristen and Teghan were still there, and we played for a little while longer until they had to go home. I also got Ceaser and Max's shopping done too. But we still need to get Max a stocking ,we already have one for Ceaser, it's red with a black top and black paw prints all over it, it's really cute!!!! Well that's all I had to say, talk to you all later!!!
