Looks like March will be coming in like a lamb -- meaning out like a lion?? Judging by the tropical "winter" we've had so far, I doubt it. (Over 70 yesterday! Up around 67 right now!) But we'll see.

Hey, check out this screenshot from Fox "News." (Which, if you can't get the picture, is a shot of some talking heads with a banner reading "All-Out Civil War in Iraq: Could it Be a Good Thing?") Talk about trying to make lemonade out of lemons! :-) Remember these words of our Fuehrer? "For the sake of our nation's security, this [civil war in Iraq] will not happen on my watch" (June 28, 2005) and "I know some fear the possibility that Iraq could break apart and fall into civil war. I don't believe these fears are justified" (December 12, 2005). The war in Iraq is a total disaster, and even some hardcore Bush supporters are now acknowledging that. But do you know why it is a disaster? That's an easy one, according to these same hardcore Bushbots: It's all the Democrats' fault! Yes, the Democrats (who have been powerless, ignored, and ridiculed for the past six years) are making this war unwinnable with all their whining, protesting, and footdragging. This from a Fox "News" program. As Keith Olbermann said last night (and this joke is funnier if you say it, not just read it), "It's called 'Fox,' not 'facts.'"

Ok, you hold-outs -- by which I mean Brent, Donna, Ryan, Sean, Teghan, and Zachary -- the Oscar train is leaving the station. Any ballots which come in after today won't be included in the game. Too bad for you! All it takes is 27 clicks and typing your name....
Gary

More reviews -- thanks, Emily!
Tristen

[Note attached to her Oscar ballot]:
Gary man is this HARD!!!!!!!!!

Sorry about that, Tristen. It is really hard, I know. Even people who are really good at it miss lots of the questions. Tell you what: Sometime soon after the Oscars are over (next Sunday), I'll make up a new game about movies that will be FUN to play. OK? :-) --Gary

Gary
2/25/06
A few more Oscar voters have answered the call, leaving only Brent, Donna, Ryan, Sean, Teghan, Tristen, and Zachary out in the cold. C'mon in, y'all! If you need further incentive, consider this statement from Marsha: "A little treat for each of the category winners will arrive from the Hatgidakis house this year." How can you refuse??

And speaking of movies, thanks for the review, Erika!

Hey everyone! Anna, I'm not sure, but I think February 27th is polar bear day! But I'm not really sure or not. But tomorrow I'm going tanning again, and I'm starting to see the dolphin sticker which is good. WELL I gotta go, talk to you all later!

Emily was in the paper and on the news again. She and two other members of the Mayor's Youth Commission were at the Mayors press conference yesterday. They were thanking the members of city council for supporting the keg registration and the curfew laws. Brent and I went to the Home Show last night. Guess we have all the improvements made on our house, becasue we didn't see much that we were interested in. No plans for today, tomorrow we are going to Wausa.

Note: The above link wasn't working for me (Saturday morning), but looks like it could be up and running soon. Keep trying it. Way to go, Emily! --Gary

Hey everyone! Well I had a weird day today at school, and it all started right before school when it was Megan's b-day and Alicia and Laura set up a ballon at her locker and it sings, so when we got to her locker Megan pushed it and it sang. Then right when it stopped singing Alicia went over to my locker and she put her hands on the top and like flew over half way that we could see her hand on the other side, but she missed the balloon, she just wanted to wack it from the other side and obvieslly that didn't work. Then at lunch Chase and Brett flew jello on her tray and then Alicia put a cookie in Megan's jello and it just like bounced on top of it because it was a sticky jello. John laughed, no surprise. But the weirdest and grossest, part was in science when we had to disect a chicken wing, a raw one. So I did what Linz said whenever you have to do something gross in science, pick a boy because they will do all the gross stuff cause they like it. So I partnered up with Hans. He said the weirdest thing at the weirdest time, he said he wanted pudding when we were disecting a chicken wing. He's kind of weird. Well I have to go, Talk to you all later.
P.S. loaded down with homework again!!!! I HATE HOMEWORK!!
Gary
2/24/06
I just now clicked the button: yep, it still works. So I guess Anna, Brent, Donna, Marsha, Ryan, Samantha, Sean, Teghan, Tristen, and Zachary just haven't tried it yet. Less than 85 hours to go....
Donna
2/23/06
Emily, you made it to the Supreme Court! Very nice.
Gary
2/23/06
Who is not going to win the Oscar this year? That's easy: Anna, Brent, Donna, Marsha, Ryan, Samantha, Sean, Teghan, Tristen, and Zachary -- unless they get their ballots in within the next four days....

Olivia, great job on making honor roll!!! That is so cool. Looks like all your hard work has been paying off. Have fun bowling.

Hey everyone! I got loaded down with like reports and lots of homework. I have a book report due the 27th, I had 3 english assignments to do tonight, a math assignment, a reading assignment, and finally, a science assignment. Oh, and I have another english assignment due this friday!! I hate all this stuff to do, and I even have to mat testing so I can get my schedule for 7th grade. But I did get an award for honorole. That's one good thing, oh and on March 3rd, my team B (which is like team a, b, and c, which I am on b) we (76 kids) are going bowling that day for like the whole day, except I think we are still going to be here for 1st and 2nd period and leaving from english. But I'm so excited! I think we are going to Hollywood bowl, you know down by Wendys and like right by gordmans?! Well I will talk to you all later!

P.S. Gary, great picture of Teghan and Zach! Do you know when mine is?

Glad you like it, Livy! I've got your picture laid out for a week from tomorrow -- March 2. Sorry for the wait, but it will be worth it. You will love it. :-) --Gary

Today's cool site is a bit photo-heavy, so apologies to anyone on dial-up. Which does not include me any more! I forgot to mention here that about a week ago I got DSL, and ooooh baby! Lovin' it!

What a great cool site today. I especially liked the pictures of the birds in MN. The eagle drinking water was really nice too.

Tristen did fine on her test. She told me it was much easier than she thought it would be. She said she got tired though, and when they finished up before the others in the class she would read. Well she read an entire 17 chapter book if that tells you anything. She said once that was over with she read an atlas for two hours. (I'm sure the time is exaggerated.) She also said she tried to take a nap & tried "about 100 different positions" at her desk & couldn't get comfortable. She tried to use her coat as a pillow, but then got cold because she couldn't use it as a blanket. She is just glad it is done with!

Have a great trip, Amanda! I really liked the tour trip too, was especially impressed at Arlington and (it seemed) the acres of Vietnam Boys graves there. We watched the changing of the Guard at the Unknown Soldier's Grave and had a fantastic view of the city.
What a great place to soak up some history of the U.S. Like to be a little bird on your shoulder. I'm wondering how Tristen's test went, I'm betting it was fine. Guess Emily's Texas trip is next up. I really liked today's fake picture, nice to see some chef's who enjoy their work.
Gary
2/22/06
I call today's picture "Chef & Sous Chef." :-)

Hey, are you Anna, Brent, Donna, Marsha, Ryan, Samantha, Sean, Teghan, Tristen, or Zachary? Then you have only five days....

Donna
2/22/06
Today's fake picture is one of my favorites! It makes me smile every time I look at it.

Amanda, have a great time in DC. I've never been and would love to see it sometime. I hope you'll have time to write in while you're there and let us know what all you've been doing.

How did Tristen do on her test yesterday?

Amanda
2/21/06
Thanks Gary. I have the White House tour on Saturday, and on Friday afternoon I have a tour of the Capital guided by Senator Hagel's office staff. We end up in his office after the hour long tour. I plan on seeing the Supreme Court in action, as they do that while they are arguing cases. I had thought about Ford's, but wasn't sure. I will try it now, and then if you do that I figured I would do the Peterson House. Thanks for the recommendations. Also, we are doing the Tourmobile on Monday. It will take us to a lot of cool places. And, just today I got our Holocaust Museum tickets in the mail. It is free to go in, but tickets are limited each day to make sure its not overcrowded. Well, I reserved tickets just to be safe. After talking to Dad, I'm glad that I did. He said they tried to go a couple of times & it always had a line out the door.

Ford's Theater (and Petersen's) don't take much time at all. Ford's does have a display downstairs of Lincoln memorabilia, but the main thing about Ford's Theater is just being in the place. That experience will really stay with you. And the Tourmobile is great! I had forgotten about it. Very convenient; it takes you everywhere, and with one ticket you can jump on or off wherever you want. It even takes you across the river to Arlington where you can see the JFK grave and eternal flame -- another very moving spot. (Look up from the flame to the top of the hill a few yards away and you'll see Robert E. Lee's pre-War home.) Also, don't forget the National Archives -- see the original Constitution before Bush shreds it! I know I've said it before, but if you have the least interest in history, Washington is like Disneyland. You're going to have a great time. --Gary

Gary
2/21/06
So, Amanda, your Washington trip is coming up in just a few days. Here are a couple of recommendations, if you're interested. I know you said you're touring the White House; and I'm sure you'll be going to the Capitol building (which is great -- an amazing atmosphere of history and power). Try the famous bean soup in the cafeteria; it's on the menu every day. From a gourmet standpoint it's nothing special, but it is famous, and at least you'll be able to say you've had it. I highly recommend seeing Ford's Theater and (directly across the narrow street) Petersen's Boarding House, where you can see the tiny room and tiny bed where Lincoln died. Both those places will really put you in touch with history.

Just a block or two from the Capitol is Union Station, a spectacular building with a huge high ceiling and an enormous open space inside. Lots of shops and a fantastic food court. A really cool place. In the same area are the Supreme Court and the Library of Congress, both beautiful buildings. The Library of Congress sits on the spot where, in Lincoln's day, was the boarding house he and his wife lived in when he was a member of the House of Representatives in the 1840s. Back then there was an auction yard just across the street where slaves were sold, and Lincoln would pass it every day.

Also, go to all the museums: There are only about 50 of them, and most of 'em are free. Have fun! :-)

Hey, here's more American Idol news, or more specifically Simon Cowell news: starting next month is a new Simon Cowell show (though he's not in it, he's the one who came up with the idea for it) called "American Inventor." Kind of like American Idol but with inventions instead of singing. A panel of four judges will see about 1000 people, then narrow that group down to 100. They walk in and present their idea or invention for two minutes. That group is winnowed down to nine. Each is given $50,000 to develop the idea, and the panel decides which three are the best. Then the American public picks the final winner. The winner gets $1 million, their product will be manufactured, and they'll get a deal with a retailer to sell it. Cowell said they've had more than 10,000 people apply with their inventions. Could be interesting!

With 6 days to go, nearly half the Oscar ballots have come in. Still waiting to hear from Anna, Brent, Donna, John, Marsha, Ryan, Samantha, Sean, Teghan, Tristen, and Zachary. (Also, Emily -- I need to hear from you on the one category you skipped; did you get my email?)

Big "Idol" week this week. Tonight, they narrow it down to 12 girls; tomorrow night, the 12 boys; and Thursday night, the results. Seems to me they could show the results as part of the first two shows -- but, I suppose if they did that, there's 25 minutes worth of commercials we wouldn't see on Thursday. "American Idol: Taking Over Your Life!" :-)

Amanda

Well, I just voted for the Oscars. They were mostly all guesses. And not even educated ones. I haven't heard much Oscar buzz recently, what with the VP shooting someone & a $365 millionare in Lincoln, who can talk about the Oscars!

Tristen is at school today, and today is the big TAKS day. It is a HUGE deal! Down to the socks they wear (warm, comfortable ones so that they don't have to wear their shoes today so that they don't disturb anyone taking it). It is a statewide test today too, every school kid grade 3 & up is taking some form of the TAKS today, generally reading I believe. Crazy, crazy... If the 3rd graders don't pass today's test they will be given a make-up sometime in the next month or so. If they don't pass that, they stay in 3rd grade next year. Yikes! Tristen was (unfoundedly) nervous for a long time, but then about a month ago she got a 116% on a reading test, so that boosted her confidence like you would not believe! Last night she had no homework & just chilled out all night. This morning I got up & made her scrambled eggs, peanut butter toast (peanuts=brain food), milk & Naked juice. She said it was a GREAT breakfast. So, she should be good to go today!

Haha nice fake picture! I like it, and actually I was just at Juice Stop today. Sorry about the checks Ryan...:)!
Gary
2/20/06
Wow, it is coming up fast: I need all your Oscar ballots in by next Monday, the 27th -- only 7 days left! So far I have received Oscar ballots from Emily, Erika, Karen, Lindsey, Lori, Olivia, and Paul. If you weren't named, start thinking and then start clicking!

The latest rumor is that the winner is a guy from Colorado. There's a CNN reporter camped out at the convenience store where the ticket was purchased. The store manager said on the radio this morning that there was so much media there that they were losing business because regular customers can't get in. Did you know that the store where the winning ticket is purchased gets 1% of the total or $50,000? And that in the last 12 years, 9 big winners came from Nebraska?
Gary
2/20/06
Well, don't get crazy with that money -- $360 million doesn't buy what it used to. When Homer came into possession of a billion dollars and the kids wanted to buy motorbikes, Marge said, "Oh no; that money is going toward your college education!"

I have been checking with all my Lincoln acquaintances this morning, but so far nobody is admitting to holding the ticket. Two people here in the office did call in sick this morning, though....

Donna
2/20/06
Okay, don't tell anyone, but I won the lottery this weekend. I haven't claimed it yet because I don't want to be hassled by the media. Sure $360 million sounds like a lot, but after taxes I'll only get $125 million. Let me know if there's anything you've been wanting but couldn't afford and I'll buy it for you just as soon as I get that check.

Hey everyone!!! Oh man has it been busy here. Our house doesn't even look like our house anymore. We have really started to box up and go through stuff. We did end up picking a realtor and now we are just trying to get the house ready so we can put it up for sale.
I have been sick lately. I have had a nasty cough and the cold weather here isn't helping at all. But thankfully I do have Monday off. So I will just take it easy.
I really like the fake pictures too. They are really cute.
Amanda~ Im very excited to hear that you already have a moving date! I hope everything works out good up until then so you have a easy move! I can't wait until we are there too!!!!

Feel better, Anna. Have some juice! :-) --Gary

Emily
2/19/06
I've been having fun looking at the "fake photos" too, can't wait to see them all!!
We haven't done much at all this weekend, it has been way too cold! Yesterday we had a windchill of negative 30, I hate the winter!!! It was so cold Erika had to let the outside cats stay in the basement. So, we were all playing a lot of pool and air hockey games down there too! But, at least it looks like all the snow is done, we only ended up with about 5 inches, so no snow day or even a late start!! It was so depressing on Monday writing formulas in Chemistry class while listening to ALL of the other school cancellations on the radio.
Does anyone else get tomorrow off for President's Day? Dad doesn't have to go in, but we all do. I think he is planning on finishing up installing the new cabinet and shelves we got at our new Home Depot store this weekend.
So, not a whole lot going on with me for this week, I usually have Mayor's Youth Commission and Teen Court this week, but both have been cancelled, so dance is the only activity I will have to worry about for the week! Although I do get to miss part of the day of school on Friday for the news conference we are hosting with the mayor, so that should be fun.

As to the fake photos: I ran Teghan first because she didn't get one before; then Tristen; then I drew the rest of the names out of a hat to put them in random order. And then I re-arranged a few names so all the Metcalf photo-fakes would all be done before Amanda leaves for Washington this week. So apologies for those of you who have to wait. But your picture, Emily, is coming up on Thursday. :-) --Gary

Amanda

So, who bought it & when are we vacationing around the world?

Oh. My. God. I hope it was someone I know... --Gary

Gary
2/17/06
Hey, have you seen this yet???
Karen
2/16/06
We have snow, but no snow day for us. The weathermen were predicting "at least 8-12". We got about 2 inches overnight and maybe two more through the day. So schools for us were on time. The roads are not good. Looks like they just salted and didn't plow, because it is blowing so much. So most of us were in a very good mood, because we were all so sure we would at least get a late start. And tomorrow our "high" is 5!!!
Lindsey
2/16/06
Cute cute pictures on the frontpage! Can't wait until you're actually here Tristen going to school! I love all these fake pictures!
Gary
2/16/06
Morning, everybody, and Happy Snow Day to those of you who are getting one. I'm not. Streets in Lincoln are not at all a problem, though scraping the coating of ice from my car windows this morning was not a fun thing.

I checked the webcams page to get a picture of the snowfall everywhere, and noticed that not only was the Minneapolis cam down (again!) but the Bird Feeder cam was too. It actually doesn't exist any more, I discovered -- they've changed their hardware in such a way that I can't make their pictures fit our format. So I found a different bird feeder cam, this one in Colorado. Oh, and I also found a different MPLS cam. Take a look!

P.S. I am aware that a lot of the other cams on our pages are down too. I'll fix 'em all eventually!

2/15/06
Gary that was so cute of Teghan with my princess friends! Did you say she did see it? Well I can't wait to see everyone else's! I bet they will all be cool. Gary, where do you go to see all the pictures, if like everyone's pictures on the front page is done, and it's like new stuff on the front page, where do you go to see it if like you haven't seen them, and maybe you just wanted to look at them? Just wondering, and can you still see the pictures from the past? Well I have to go, but I'll talk to you all later!!!!!!!

Funny you should ask, Livy! If you go to the bottom of the front page and click on the button that says past fakes, you'll be able to see all the pictures that have come before. Thursday is TRISTEN, and Friday is JOHN & MARSHA. --Gary

Lindsey
2/15/06
By the way Amanda, have you thought anymore about furniture? I was trying to think of some more ideas for you but not coming up with much. Just wondering if you had any other ideas.
Amanda
2/15/06
Well, it will be a hectic 3 days, but I'm not working, so what else do I have to do? Plus we aren't packing the whole house. Just a little U-Haul trailer. And the party I'm not planning, so that's not a problem. And houses, no not yet. Gonna shack up at Grandma's for a little while. We need to sell this house first & make sure both of us have employment before purchasing a new house. And the employment thing explains the rush. I would move today if it were not for Tristen & school. I need me a J-O-B!
Lindsey
2/15/06
Love the front page picture! Can't wait to see tomorrow's as well!
Amanda's can't wait until you're here!! I'm so excited as I'm sure everyone else here is too! And Ryan get here as soon as you can, Juice Stop is waiting ;-)!
Emily
2/15/06
Yeah, it looks like we could get some snow around 8-10 inches possible. But, its starting to look like now we will only get up to 2 tonight and not much in the morning tomorrow. So I am highly doubting we will get a snow day or even a late start. Although, I am sure every other little school around us will be closed!!! I had to speak about my biggest pet peeve in my speech class today, and that is what I choose to speak about. That and the entire winter season!! I hate it, I can't wait until my mini summer vacation in Texas, only 22 more days!! Geez Amanda's sounds like you guys are going to be busy getting done with school, having a party, and getting everything packed up in those last 3 days! I would want to spread it out! But, glad that you are excited about it, it will be fun for all you guys when EVERYBODY is living in Lincoln except for us!! Have you started looking for houses yet??
P.S. Teghan you are the prettiest princess in the whole picture!! :) Can't wait to see the others!
Amanda
2/15/06
Oh, and Donna, did Tristen tell you I want the recipe for the heart mint things? We tried to make those for a party once & they didn't turn out... Always been looking for that recipe.
Amanda
2/15/06
It has been our plan to let Tristen finish school on Thursday May 25th, have a going away party Friday May 26th & leave Saturday May 27th. Unless anything comes up, which it always does, right?
Amanda
2/15/06
Very weird weather indeed. High of 81 expected Thursday & then by Saturday a high of 35 with possible snow. What gives?
Donna
2/15/06
What? Amanda, you have a specific day you'll be here? Cool. What date is 101 days?

May 27. --Gary

Amanda

Gary, it's not Ryan in 101 days, just us 3.

Ooops, force of habit. Fixed. --Gary

Wow, new countdown item today: Only 101 days away!
Amanda
2/15/06
Be sure to go to our website, there are new photos today!!! I'm sure there will be more added throughout the week also, so check often!!
Gary
2/15/06
I've got most of them done, and I'm halfway tempted to post them all at once just so y'all could see 'em sooner. They're all turning out pretty well -- some funny pics this time around! :-) But I guess it will be more fun to stretch things out and do them one at a time. Tune in tomorrow for TRISTEN!

Weird weather. Hot dry winds coming in from the south for Texas (up near 80 today?), and a big snowstorm is bearing down on Sioux City (8-10 inches possible; tomorrow a snow day??). As usual this winter, here in Lincoln we are getting...nothing!

Amanda
2/15/06

On the subversive websites I go to (which is what I take to mean as my "sources"), there is lots of comment about it -- but almost all along the lines of, "What next? I can't believe these guys." I agree that the story is weird, but at the moment anyway I don't think there's any more to it than a dumb accident. One person I read was amused at how Fox "News" kept using the word "accidentally" over and over -- as if they didn't, people might think it was intentional! As for the other "news" channels -- like CNN and the major networks -- the only disturbing thing is how they are, as usual, merely repeating the Republican spin. They don't say he was "shot with a shotgun" -- they say he was "sprayed with birdshot" or "peppered with buckshot," like it was no more serious than getting snapped with a towel in the locker-room. But, this happened on Saturday, and the guy is STILL in the Intensive Care Unit. Another bit of repeated spin is this: They all say the guy was "sneaking up behind" Cheney, who then whirled and shot. So if he was "sneaking," it wasn't really Cheney's fault, was it, hmmmm? :-) Well, I've been hunting exactly once in my life, and even I know that the first rule of hunting in a group is Always Be Sure Where Everyone Is.

On another site, someone suggested it was a warning to Scooter Libby about testifying against Cheney: "I've got a gun and I know how to use it!" :-) Oh, one more thing about Republican spin: One person wrote that by the weekend, here is how the story will read:

Vice-president Cheney saved the life of a fellow hunter in Texas Saturday. As the Vice-president was taking a well deserved stroll after hours of intense discussions with foreign diplomats, Cheney noticed a deadly rattlesnake approaching one the dignitaries, fangs bared, ready to strike. With split-second timing, Cheney drew his gun and shot the reptile before it could kill the man, who happened to be a highly decorated war hero. Cheney's quick response saved the man's life, said his wife (and mother of his five children). The man was slightly injured by fragments of stone that struck his torso during the incident. The Vice-president will receive a Medal of Honor for his heroism and bravery.
All I know is, I'll be Tivo'ing John Stewart, Keith Olbermann, Leno, and Letterman tonight! :-)
Donna
2/13/06
Hi Livy, yes, I mailed the package to you know who. It should be there tomorrow. ;-)

Gary, what are your sources saying about this accidental shooting? I just watched a few minutes of the press conference and McClellan seemed defensive as usual. He kept saying you'll have to ask Cheney's office. One frustrated reporter said she'd tried but Cheney's office wasn't talking either.

New York did get hit pretty hard. We have a spring day, then much colder and snow by the end of the week. We got flurries all week-end and have maybe 2 inches on the ground.
I think that Dick Cheney deal is weird! Would like to hear a few more details on that, but doubt that we will.
Emily is home today. Not sick, but tired and needed a day off to rest. Otherwise I think we are beginning to get over this flu.
Big Valentines day party at St Pauls today, so it should be an easy day.
Gary
2/13/06
Happy Monday morning, people. Three items on my newsletter agenda:

1) How 'bout that New York snowstorm? I know we all complain about never getting a snow-day, but how would you like to be a NYC schoolkid? Yesterday -- biggest one-day snowfall in New York history (27 inches); today -- school as usual. Dang! That's like saying, "You kids are NEVER getting a snow-day, so get used to it!!"

2) How 'bout Dick Cheney shooting a fellow hunter over the weekend? My first thought was: It's a start! :-) If these Bush-supporting jerks want to kill each other off one by one, it's a slow process but better than nothing! My only regret was that Bush himself wasn't in the hunting party....

3) And how 'bout those fake photos I'm doing of everyone? Oh wait, you haven't seen them yet. Well, in a couple of days you will! The second round of Fake Photos starts Wednesday. There is 21 of us, so doing one a day will take us well into March. I know Amanda and Emily both have travel plans during that time, but you won't miss anything: I'll collect all the photos at the end and put them on a separate page. Hope y'all enjoy. First up on Wednesday: Teghan!

Hey, have you read the reviews lately? In the past two weeks Lindsey has reviewed "The Brothers Grimm," Emily reviewed "The Corpse Bride," Amanda reviewed "Four Brothers" and "A Million Little Pieces," and Livy turned in two great reviews -- "War of the Worlds" and "Flightplan." Don't miss 'em!
Livy

Livy attached the following note to her Oscar ballot, but I think she meant it as advice to the other Oscar voters; so I'm posting it here. --Gary

I liked some of those movies, but some I have not seen (like King Kong), and that I want to see and so on so forth. But in conclusion, the ones I have seen like March of the Penguins and War of the Worlds were good. But one problem, I think that Flightplan should be on the list too, because it's really good, and well, ya, pretty much that. So think about who you vote for, and so well bye! ;)

Hey everyone! Well it was snowy today down in Lincoln, and well, ya. Donna, did you get the suprise to the post office for you know who??? Gary, once you left, in the morning I saw so many commercials for the Wallace and Gromet movie, and wanted to see it then too, cause I was kind of bored, and I wanted to watch it again.

Hope you feel better Teghan! I hate that you're sick. Get better soon!!! Talk to you all later!!
Lindsey

Get well soon Teghan! I hate to hear that you're sick!

Emily

Yeah, the Humane Society puts out really good carmel/chocolate apples for a fundraiser each Valentines. We all LOVE them! When Erika was younger she used to think the cats and dogs actually made them.
Amanda
2/10/06
OK, I assume the apples are for a charity thing, or something, but could you explain why you got foodstuffs for Valentine's from the Humane Society?

Yeah, I was going to say something, too -- like, "be sure you wash it first!" :-) --Gary

Emily

Geez, looks like everyone is getting sick! I think Erika and I are starting to get back to normal, but Dad is still out of it. Hope Teghan is feeling better soon too!

Erika and I got our Valentine's Day presents today. Gourmet chocolate and caramel covered appels from the Humane Society, they are sooo good! We also got a tape from the news station of the interview I did a few weeks ago about our Des Moines trip, so next time we are together we can watch that! It looks like just our Mayor's Youth Commission group will be doing another state wide news conference on the keg registration in a few weeks. I along with 2 others will be speaking again, so hopefully that will go well, and I will get to miss school! :)
So, Tristen have you been watching American Idol this season? I think the Hollywood auditions started on Wednesday. I have dance at the same time as the Wednesday shows, so I haven't seen any of them!! Several of the girls in my classes have also complained about missing AI. Although I don't like it quite as much after the audition phase.

Teghan, I'm sorry to hear you're not feeling well. Get better soon!

It's cookie time!
Amanda
2/10/06
So, Tristen has the day off today for teacher inservice. AND, wouldn't you know, someone gets sick! We were gonna have a fun day of either shopping & lunch or (because the weather suddenly turned cold & windy) staying in & watching movies & making lasagna & cookies (lasagna is dinner, cookies are for fun & for Valentine's parties we have coming up). But, last night at about 4 I heard Teghan screaming from her room. I went in & she said she was choking. Well, she actually got sick in her bed. I don't think she has ever really vomited before (sorry to use the word -- I hate it, eww). We got her cleaned up and back to bed. She was up for about 45 minutes. Then up again at 6 with the same drill. Again at 8, but now she has nothing left in her stomach, so it's much less messy, but more painful for her. Poor thing. She hasn't gotten sick in a LONG time. I can't even remember the last time. So, for now Tristen & I are just taking it easy, messing around on the computers...! I'm glad Tristen has the day off, I would not have been in the mood of getting her up & ready for school.

Oh, and Girl Scout cookie sales started today, I just haven't had time to put together the order form. Coming soon!

Feel better, Teghan! --Gary

Erika went back to school today, missed three days and will have lots of work to make up. Brent is on the couch for the second day. Feeling pretty bad last night and went to our 24 hour doctors office, has bronchitis. Got a couple of meds and says he is feeling better, but still looks unwell. Emily has a nasty cold, but has toughed out going to school all week. So mostly we are all having a bad month!! Gary, thanks for the web site on Emily's trip -- far better than the schedule we got from her teacher :)

I hadn't tuned in that Erika was so down. Glad you are feeling better, Erika! Here's a belated one for you, and one for your dad and Emily:

Feel better, you guys! --Gary

Okay, new addition to the photo page. Sorry for the delay!
Donna
2/8/06
Friendly reminder to Gary, could you put up the newspaper article Amanda sent? I couldn't read it off the email she sent.
Amanda, what did Tristen think of seeing her picture in the newspaper?

My bad. Amanda sent it to me on Sunday, but it kept falling off my radar. I'll get it posted this afternoon. --Gary

Amanda
2/8/06
Tristen is sure getting a kick out of the old photo shop pictures. Teghan loves the one of Tristen & Britney Spears. She leaves it on that page & if the screensaver kicks on she comes over to move the mouse so she can look at that picture more. We think we need new ones. What if everyone offered suggestions about one another. Like "I think Sean's should look like __________." We could do it secretively so each of us doesn't know until they are posted. No mean ones though! Either way, Teghan needs a photo.

Great idea! Suggestions would be excellent. Even a suggestion about yourself. And if you find a photo somewhere that you would like yourself (or someone else) in, please email it to me or tell me where to find it. Let's do it! :-) --Gary

Chai (ch like "chair," rhymes with "pie") is a milky sugary spiced tea drink originally from India but it's all over the place now. I first had it many years ago in a health-food/coffeehouse type place not far from the Mission Dolores in San Francisco. This Bolthouse version definitely reminded me of that experience; even though the milk is soy and sugars are natural, etc., the flavor hits the same notes. (Though actual chai is less milky, I think, and more tea-y. And served warm.)
Amanda
2/8/06
I tried Bolthouse's Vanilla Chai Tea last night, since I can't find Naked's version of it either. It was good. It tasted a bit like Egg Nog though. Has anyone tried Chai tea at a coffee place? Is the taste similar to what I am describing? How do you pronounce chai?
Gary

Thanks to Tristen (and Teghan and Ryan) for all the contributions to the countdown page!
Gary
2/7/06
FYI, the countdown page has been updated with all the upcoming trips. I also updated the calendar page (after letting the whole month of January slip by before I noticed it). Note that, starting September 2, there are eleven football Saturdays in a row -- no off week until November 18, which is the week before Thanksgiving and (on Friday) the last game of the season (vs. Colorado).

That picture of Martha Stewart as a prison guard is creepy.

Erika, are you feeling better?

As it happens, I didn't even get as far as the oil change on Saturday, but instead lazed around most of the afternoon. Later, though, I did almost maim someone for life! Saturday night on my way home, about 10:30, I'm on a one-way street with cars to the left and right of me, and behind me. We're all approaching the intersection at 13th and O with a green light ahead so we're moving along smartly. Then there's a blur on my left: a woman is running across the crosswalk, against the light and right into the oncoming traffic. She somehow got past the car on my left but I'm heading right for her. I slam on the brakes and hear other brakes screeching all around me. She shrieks and halts in her tracks, putting her hands out and touching my left front fender. Smoke from my tires is coiling up around her, and the other drivers are all looking at me like, "What the...??" Then she scampers off across the street and on her way. Some people!

Hey, if anyone is wondering what "Don't Quit Your Day Job Week" is all about, it's from a Photoshop website I go to. The people on this site challenge each other to various kinds of Photoshop trickery -- kind of like what I did with this a couple of years ago. So a bunch of people were faking "celebrities in day jobs" and I'll be using the better ones this week. Hope you like!

I am jealous of the Washington and Houston trips. Washington is like Disneyland for history buffs -- so many amazing things there. And Emily, I would love to be in on your Mars weekend. Sounds like lots of fun! I found this Schedule of Events which I'm sure you've already seen but others may find interesting.

Karen
2/6/06
So Gary how was your trip on Saturday? I have an equally fun trip this afternoon for an oil change -- we'll have to compare notes later. Our flu bug continues, Erika is home sick today. Wasn't feeling too well yesterday either. Didn't do much at all this week-end. Did watch the puppy bowl for way too long. Amanda, you should have a great time in DC, have you been there before? Emily is very excited about her trip. Not much time before she goes.
Amanda
2/4/06
Emily, Joe's crab shack rocks! Be sure to tell them it's someones birthday--preferably someone you want to embarass!

A cruise, wow. I always wanted to go on one, but not so much anymore... Not my cup of tea. Make sure you have passports now for Mexico if you plan to de-boat. It used to be that they said you didn't need them, but it makes it much easier nowadays, and soon it will be required for trips to Mexico & Canada & the Caribbean, etc...

Gary
2/3/06
This is so weird -- I've got travel plans too! On Saturday I'm headed over to N Street Lube for an oil change, and then on to East Park Mall. I'm pretty excited!

Seriously, way to go on all the cool trips, everybody. (And I actually am going to New Orleans in three or four months.)

Lindsey
2/3/06
Well I guess we made travel plans too. On March 18th or 19th we leave for LA and we're going on a cruise for a week to a couple Mexican cities (Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan, and Puerto Vallarta). Then we come back the following Sunday after. It should be really fun, I've never been on a cruise OR out of the US. I'll post more news when we find out more of what we're going to be doing.
Emily
2/3/06
Sounds like you have a fun trip planned, Amanda! I'm sure it will be a great experience!
I got some good travel news yesterday as well. I will be in Houston TX March 9 -- 14 with about 15 other kids from my school for the Mars Settlement Design Competition! I'm pretty excited, it should be a lot of fun, we will be doing a lot of other things around Houston apart from the competiton as well. One of the last things on our itinerary is a lunch at Joe's Crab Shack, isn't that the place that Tristen said she loved to eat at??
Amanda
2/3/06
Well, it's official I just booked my flight. I'm going to Washington DC on February 23rd until March 1st! My mom goes each year for work & I am tagging along this time. All I had to pay for was my flight & meals. A lot of things to do there are free, so I'm getting out pretty cheap. And, because of my connections on Capital Hill I secured a Capital visit on Friday Feb 24 & White House tour on Saturday Feb 25th. The White House tour is a big deal because you have to book through your congressional leaders & it has to be done 2 months in advance. Well, I just got it booked this week. We plan on doing a lot of other things, I'll keep you posted!

Cool! DC is a fantastic place to visit. --Gary

What a beautiful day here, up to 44. We are still having conversations with realtors, it's a long process. I think Naked should hire Anna and give her a big commission. Congrats to Emily!
Amanda

Maybe Karen & Brent should get her a keg everytime she is on the news.

You have to be a lot further "advanced" on the political ladder than Emily is before you're allowed to say one thing and do another! :-) --Gary

Oh man, don't even get me started on the bomb threats. Last year for East was the fire scare and we had 7-8 fires and this year I can't even count the bomb threats and there all real because people were writing them on the bathroom walls so for the longest time we only had one set of bathrooms open on the main floor and teachers or secretaries would take turns watching them throughout the day. Well that worked for a about a week and then they just started coming over the phones or letters so it wasn't much help. Now they don't even tell us when they have them because it's disrupted class too many times. I hate that when things go on like this, the school doesn't have the decency to tell the students OR the parents. Last year they only told parents about 4 of the fires and that was because they were obvious because we had 4 or 5 fire trucks outside the school.
Anna

Man it seems I have got everybody hooked on Naked and that is good! There so healthy. My favorite is Berry Blast and Mighty Mango. All this talk about them makes me want one now!
Donna
2/2/06
I read Emily's quote last night. Emily, you do such an amazing job with debate and this kegger bill. It's so impressive! I think your mom and dad should buy you a treat every time you're interviewed on TV or in the paper. You'd get a lot of stuff. So do you know any more about the bomb scare? It makes me so mad that they keep you guys in school while they do the search. That makes no sense.

Lindsey, have you had any more fires or bomb threats at your school? Did they ever figure out who was responsible?

Happy Groundhog's Day!

Karen

I have a copy of the article and I will scan it today and send it in later. Another "spring" day, but winter is to return tomorrow. Brent is home again with the flu, guess he finally caught my germs.
Gary
2/2/06
Ooops, I just now tried the link to Emily's news conference article below, and it seems the link has expired. (It's to the Sioux City Journal, and requires registration to see past articles.) If anyone can still get the article, copy it and email it to me -- the whole thing, or just the paragraphs with Emily -- and I'll post it here.
Amanda

Gary, did you find Naked?

Yes! Hy-Vee had 'em, right there next to the produce. Six or eight kinds in stock, though they didn't have Blue Machine which you mentioned, nor did they have Vanilla Chai which I was curious to try. But I bought eight bottles (on special at 2 for $5) of the kinds they had. Interestingly, they also had the Bolthouse line too. So I got their Vanilla Chai (who's copying who??) and had that last night. Not really a juice drink (soy milk, teas, and herbs) but really nice. I had planned to have one of the Naked varieties for lunch today, but as it turns out we're all going to HuHot for lunch. So I'll give it a whirl tonight. More than anyone ever wanted to know about my shopping/juicing activities, no? --Gary

Emily

Mom picked up some of the "Naked" drinks today and seems to like them. I remember my art teacher last semester used to always be drinking them and we all thought they were kind of strange!
I had an intresting day at school today. About half way through 1st period they made an announcement that "something" was happening in the building and we all needed to go into lock-down procedures. So while everyone was freaking out about that a friend of mine called the school pretending to be a parent and asked what was going on. The office said they couldn't release any information but a bomb-type threat was made. So we all got to stay locked in our classrooms for the next 3 HOURS! While the police, bomb-sniffing dogs, etc. came and checked everything out. Luckily nothing was found and the threats couldn't be backed up, but it was an exciting day.
I got back from the Des Moines/ lobbying trip las night. It went well and I had a good time. The so-called low key news conference, which I had to speak at turned out to be a pretty big deal with a ton of people not to mention being on statewide television, but I think it went well. We also got to meet and talk to our representatives and tour the capitol.

Cool, Emily; well done! (I am referring to the Des Moines trip, not the bomb threat.) And thanks to Karen for the above link -- see paragraphs 7 and 8! --Gary

Ideal doesn't have them. I called Open Harvest (the place by Eyes of the World) and the guy said, "We don't carry 'em... but I know Hy-Vee does." Ha! Go figure. I'll be stopping by tonight. :-)
Amanda
2/1/06
Bolthouse is good too. But Naked is best. And Blue Machine is my favorite. Keep looking, Gary, because I did the store locator here & it came up with nothing! But, I got some at Sams Club AND at one of our grocery chains here. Look in the produce department too, or call some produce departments. Try Ideal, or the natural foods store by Eyes of the World. Keep obsessing, its worth it!
Gary
2/1/06
Thanks, you guys, for talking up the Naked Juice smoothies.... You made it sound so good I started obsessing about it. The store locator on their website listed only one store in this area (Bag & Save at 48th and Vine -- though, troublingly, it gave the address as 48th & Vine in Omaha), so I went out there last night and...couldn't find them. They did have a similar product in the produce section from Bolthouse Farms, but I didn't try them. But I will if I can't find the other...
Donna

Woohoo Ryan! Send picture with you holding your award!
Amanda
2/1/06
Linz, I thought you or Livy saw that movie & commented on it somewhere on the website, but I couldn't find it yesterday when I wrote in. Maybe I'm going crazy.

Ryan & I are going to the annual awards luncheon today at 11. He will get his recognition for the award he won & they will find out who won at the next level. He is pretty excited.
