Amanda I did see Must Love Dogs and right when they said "emergency pants" I instantly thought Target emergency!!! That's so cool about the guy in Iraq and all the stuff you and the girl scouts did for them.

Back to work for me today. Spent the whole day yesterday on the couch. Caught some stomache flu from some kid at St Pauls. Emily left for Des Moines at 6 this morning. Just got a call from and she is on her way home. Sure she will have lots to tell you later. She was on the news last night -- did a great job with the interview. Becoming quite a pro at interviews. Amanda -- I need to get some of those smoothies -- that is Erika's favorite breakfast. Great story about your army friend, does make you feel good to know you made a difference for him. We have a family at St Pauls whose father is in Iraq, they are soooo excited because he is to come home in a few weeks. Checked out the Oscar ballots, I haven't seen any of them, yet again. I'll have to make by best "guess" this week. Well, I'd better get going have to watch Idol tonight....
Amanda

I watched Must Love Dogs, and OMG, who has seen it? They have "emergency pants!"
Donna
1/31/06
Ooh, what's in a smoothie? Do you have any scones? (Sorry, I can't resist. Whenever I hear smoothie I think of Livy quoting the lady in Kicking and Screaming.)
Livy, do you want to work on our Valentine surprise this weekend? Let me know, but don't tell anyone.
Amanda
1/31/06
Anna~is the juice/smoothie you mentioned to me once called "Naked"? We bought a couple. Man, they are good! And SO good for you!!!

Okay, the Oscar nominations are out, and our ballot is up! Brokeback Mountain is the winner of the nominations battle (with 8), followed by Crash, Good Night and Good Luck, and Memoirs of a Geisha with 6 each; Capote, Munich, and Walk the Line with 5 each; Pride & Prejudice, The Constant Gardener, and King Kong with 4 each; and Narnia, Cinderella Man, and War of the Worlds with 3 each. It's Oscar night in a little less than five weeks. Good luck with your Oscar picks!

Hey everyone! I was looking at the sale bill and Marsha do you remember your first car dad said it was a 1965 black malibu. I was just wondering it was kind of cool. Well I guess I will talk to you all later!
P.S. Dad asks is the Dukes of Hazzard for real????

Well, many critics said it was one of the most important films of 2005. When you fill out your Oscar ballots, I think you should all vote for it for Best Picture. Seriously. --Gary

OMG, I witnessed a Lifetime Movie moment today! The guy who was in Iraq got home today at about 1. I was up at the school getting ready to get all my Girl Scouts for our meeting at 3. He came over with his wife & gave me a hug & thanked me for all that I & the Girl Scouts did. I thanked him, told him what he did (5 months in Iraq) was much bigger. He still had his desert BDU uniform on & he waited for his daughter (Maralyn -- who is 8, a friend of Tristen's) to come out of school & she ran & jumped into his arms. She didn't get off of him the whole time I was outside near them! When I walked by her she was crying. It was the sweetest thing I have ever seen. Once again, I was reminded of what a selfless thing our military members do for us. The whole experience (having her as a Girl Scout & doing this for her dad & the rest of his coworkers) is something I will never forget. And don't you know, she has been a Girl Scout since kindergarten & is one of the most polite, respectable, smart girls.

Yeah, we wouldn't recommend Carlos O'Kelly's anymore after a few years ago while waiting for our food, we heard people yelling "kill it, kill it!" coming from the kitchen. It was pretty gross, but also funny.
We leave for Des Moines bright and early at 6 AM tomorrow. 30 of us are going this year, so it should be fun. We will be doing some lobbying, and I was chosen as our spokesperson to speak at the state wide news conference that will be hosted on it.
The news crew even came to my school this afternoon to interview me about it. It was the same reporter that interviewed me for the curfew ordinance a few months ago. And she remembered me, so that was a little embarassing. But, I did get to miss most of my Language Comp. class, so that was good.
Mom was home again today, more flu bugs going around. But, we did have a good time on Saturday as well. It was fun to see everyone!

Wow, I still haven't gotten used to the Oscars falling a month earlier. The nominations will be announced tomorrow morning. That means there's only a month to go before the trophy changes hands -- if you can get it out of my hands, that is! (Lindsey and I shared the award this year, and I'm the current keeper.)

Anyway, nominations are early tomorrow morning, and I'll have the ballot up as soon as I can put it together; probably will be up by mid-afternoon. Meanwhile, take a look at the list of eligible movies for Best Picture. Can you pick the five that will be nominated? I'm predicting Brokeback Mountain, Capote, The Constant Gardener, Syriana, and The Dukes of Hazzard -- though I'm iffy about that last one....

Who Am I was fun. I realized I read the restaurant question wrong. For some reason I was thinking it had to be a fast food place. Lindsey, I didn't know you liked Carlos O'Kelly's. I always think of that being a Nelson favorite. I learned this weekend though that they don't go to the one in SC anymore. E/E, you need to tell that story. Gross, but funny. ;-)

Saturday was a fun day. And how nice to have rain all day long. I wouldn't love driving home in it though. We got over half an inch but I'm surprised it wasn't more for as long as it rained.

Sad news about the new co-anchor of ABC News getting hurt in Iraq this weekend. It sounds pretty bad. And good ol' Bush speaks tomorrow night. I don't think I'll be watching. I'll let Keith Olbermann give me the highlights. And no doubt it'll delay American Idol. Stupid Bush.

We had a great time in Lincoln. We did find a waterbed that we liked, just deciding if we want to get it. Takes three weeks to order, and I want to re-paint the bedroom before it comes. So we have to get busy and figure out what we want to do. Had a great meal -- in fact I want some more, then played a fun game. Left about 5 and stopped in Omaha at Kings for a cheese frenchee. Got home about 8, drove through rain most of the way home (after a rain all day long).
Amanda
1/29/06
So, how was the Lincoln trip, Karen's? Did you find what you were looking for? Do anything else fun?
Gary
1/28/06
OK, game over. "Who Am I #11" is now history. Answering the call were Anna, Donna, Emily, Erika, Grandma, Karen, Lindsey, Olivia, Paul, and Samantha. And who won? Find out!

And yet, these same journalists & talk show heads are griping about him making millions, but the recent spike in sales the last few weeks is DUE to them! I'm sure sales declined a bit after Christmas & now the people who are curious have gone out & bought it in the last few weeks because of the media coverage.
And I am in the minority, but I don't think he gave bad advice for addicts. I love what he says about his "disease" -- he refuses to blame it on someone or something -- like a bad upbringing, genetics, predispositions, etc. He refuses to blame something & use it as a crutch. He also doesn't beleive in the AA steps, which I am not sure I do either. I think too many people use them as another addiction. Our American society is lazy & refuses to take responsibilty for our own actions. Frey says he recovered with the help of the clinic (providing a safe haven during the first crucial weeks of detoxification and by teaching him Rational Reaction Therapy -- which is taught to many probationers/parolees, etc.) but that he essentially had to make every choice himself & I commend that -- if that's really what happened. Don't get me wrong, I'm not defending him 100%, but I think he has some good things to say.
It's the same as dieters. We eat crap nowadays -- and no one seems to be able to lose weight without a trainer, Jenny Craig, Weight Watchers or surgery. Why can't we do things the old fashioned way? One of the doctors he saw in the clinic tried to link the ear infections he had as a baby to his anger which helped lead him to abuse. Far fetched? A bit, but it is the American way... I suppose there are many weak people in this society who need all the help they can get, but it's a shame our culture created that mindset. Survival of the Fittest perhaps.
Either way, I went today & got his other book, "My Friend Leonard," because of the publicity I mentioned. I don't believe every word I read, I am way too skeptical for that -- even if he had not been "found out."
Gary
1/27/06
I've read some criticisms of Frey coming from former addicts (one of whom wrote a piece for Salon.com, I think -- I'll try to find it and provide a link); their main objection was that Frey gave bad advice. (For example, you can "decide" to quit, and quit on your own with no outside help.) And remember, he made (and is still making) millions on this. Olbermann last night suggested it would be a nice gesture on Frey's part to, if nothing else, offer ten percent of his earnings, say, to a program for authentic recovering addicts. This all kind of reminds me of the quiz show scandals of the 50s. (See "Quiz Show" with Ralph Fiennes.) Some said, it's all entertainment and nobody got hurt, so what's the big deal if they lied? But people get mad when they invest their emotions (and money) in something, only to find it's fraudulent. When we watch a magician, we know going in that he's going to fool us -- we pay him to! And nobody gets mad and says, "He lied when he said that box was empty!" But we have a different agreement with politicians, public figures...and non-fiction authors. To carry it to a ridiculous extreme, suppose a document written by Jesus was discovered stating that the book on his life written by his followers was mis-remembered and fictionalized and exaggerated to get readers? Yow!
Amanda

So, anyone see the press coverage surrounding my recent review? Oprah needs to be president. She could offer W a few pointers. The opening statements on her show were bold yesterday. She directly apologized for making a wrong decision. It was interesting.

However, while I disagree with the lying author James Frey did when he told the stories of his past, I understand why he did some of it. He didn't remember stories to their full extent because of his abuse & he was writing a book, which needed to grab readers. I have heard he told the publisher it was somewhat fictionalized & they didn't sell it as that. Also, they did no fact checking. So, I guess my ranting goes to America. He should get a slap on the wrist for this -- not a public raking over the coals for weeks and 30 pages dedicated to the story on thesmokinggun.com. It's a bit much. But, that's what Americans want. Someone to throw sticks & stones at, because we are all SO innocent. I think it would be a horrific tragedy if something happened to this man -- say he relapses or dies. He seems very apologetic & sincere. And, this is coming from me -- the born skeptic!

I heard about Richard Hatch on CNN's entertainment news last night--the reporter's comment was something like 'Hatch gets 13 years but OJ is a free man.'

I want the Clinton bumper sticker. I miss Bill too.

Great reviews Olivia and Amanda. I wondered about Lovely Bones, but Oprah's book picks always sound so depressing. I may read this one though after reading your review.

Morning, everybody. The Who Am I role call now includes Anna, Donna, Emily, Erika, Grandma, Karen, Lindsey, Olivia, and Samantha. If you were not named, get your answers in today or tomorrow, or suffer the embarassment of missing the exciting final phase of this game that has taken the nation by storm. All it requires is 16 mouse-clicks and typing your name -- couldn't be easier!

Hey, I saw a great bumpersticker on my drive in this morning: Against a blue background with an American flag were the words "I Miss Bill." :-)

In other news, you heard about Richard Hatch, right? The guy who won the million-dollar prize on the original "Survivor"? Seems he was convicted of tax evasion and sentenced to 13 years in the slammer. My thoughts: 1) If you want to know where the real power in this country resides, look not to the NSA, FBI, or what-not -- it's the IRS. Thirteen years for the taxes on a measly million dollars??? 2) Hatch gets 13 years, and the Enron guys, the Tom DeLays, the Karl Roves, the Jack Abramoffs -- not to mention George Bush -- still walk around free. Are our priorities screwed up, or what? 3) Hatch claims he was assured by the producers of the show that his winnings would be tax-free -- in other words, CBS would write him a check for a million, and they would write another check to the IRS paying the taxes on said million. Sounds fair, especially considering how the network has profited from this show. Shame on CBS if they pulled a fast one. 4) But regardless of what CBS promised or didn't promise, did or didn't do, in Hatch's place my FIRST job -- before I even deposited the check -- would have been to get a good accountant/investment/tax person to make sure all the i's get dotted and t's crossed. Money is dangerous! Like explosives or something -- the more you have of it, the more careful you have to be.

Hey everyone! Just wanted to check in and see how everybody is doing and stuff. Oh I also watched Flightplan today after school. It was pretty good. Usually you would think it's scary, but it's just kind of suspensful. But I wrote a review about Flightplan and War of the Worlds. I would have wrote War of the Worlds earlier, but I just didn't think about it. Well Talk to you all later...Bye!

Hey, great review Livy! But I didn't get one for WoW -- just the one for Flightplan. Are you sure you sent it?? --Gary
Later: It did finally arrive, Livy. Another great review!

Another Spring day here, I hope we don't use them all up before Spring actually gets here. Weather guy said this has been the warmest winter world wide since records have been kept. Suppose global warming has any effect? Karen, am glad you are coming Sat. Come early and stay late! Glad Lincoln still has waterbed stores here! Haven't been doing much except reading lately, will try to get outside for awhile today, tho'. Marsha, how did it go with the realtors, wish you were looking for houses here, but all in good time. I agree, "Who Am I?" was harder this time, some of them could fit all of us. Afraid I won't win the $100,000 either, Tristen.
Amanda
1/25/06
Marsha~ I just noticed the chicken recipe you added, it sounds good! I think I will try it, we are really tired of almost all our recipes, we need a whole new batch. You always seem to have great recipes, can't wait til we all are in Lincoln & we can try them firsthand!
How did the realtor visit go, Minnesotans?
Gary
1/25/06
OK, Livy has joined the club of Who Am I-ers, meaning that we have now heard from Anna, Emily, Erika, Grandma, Karen, Lindsey, Olivia, and Samantha. If you were not named, get busy!
Livy
1/24/06
Hey evryone! Donna, sure I will do that, and ya, I will keep it a sercret and a surprise. But I have 1 question... If it's supposed to be a surprise, why did you write it on the website cause everyone can see it whenever thay want basically... well I have to go... Talk to you all later... Bye!!!
Donna
1/24/06
Harry Belafonte is my new hero. You've probably heard he's become really outspoken about the Bush administration, even calling Bush a terrorist. He was on Wolf Blitzer last night. It was pretty good. You can go here to read the transcript of his interview.

And today I read that Bush is no longer calling it domestic spying, it's now domestic surveillance. Ah, that sounds much better.

Donna
1/24/06
Emily, I have no idea if I'm right or not. And actually the pie threw me off because I think I know your favorite pie and the one I think is you doesn't have that as their pie choice. I think I did a really bad job of guessing everyone. I'm pretty sure I know John, Paul, Gary, Olivia and Teghan. Other than that, I really am just guessing.

Karen, Saturday works for me. Final weekend of the Eyes of the World jewelry sale. I could be talked into taking the girls there if they insist on going. ;-)

Olivia, I have an idea for a Valentine surprise we could work on and send out to everyone. Give me a call and let's chat about it--but let's keep it a surprise. ;-)

Karen

I'll answer the Erika crawl since she is already at school. One day last week she was heading out of the house and didn't want the kitties to follow her. She took a slice of ham to distract them, but they didn't fall for it. She came back in and said "the cats like me better than ham." We all thought it was funny :)
Hey, we are thinking of making a trip to Lincoln on Saturday. Been waiting to see if anyone else gets my flu -- and I think they may have all missed my germs. We need to shop for a waterbed and Lincoln seems to be one of a few places that actually have them. So let us know if it works out for anyone.
Gary
1/24/06
Grandma and Lindsey have joined Anna, Emily, Erika, Karen, and Samantha in submitting their Who Am I guesses. Be sure to get yours in!

P.S.: I hope Erika will tell us the story behind today's crawl... :-)

Donna, AP is Advanced Placement. I offically register for my classes tomorrow, but I think I have it all worked out. I am planning on taking:
Intro to College Biology (1st Sem.)/AP Biology (2nd Sem.)
Anatomy and Physiology (1st Sem.)/ Guided Lit.(2nd Sem.)
AP English
Western Civilizations
Debate (1st Sem.)/Sociology (2nd Sem.)
Trig.(1st Sem.)/Advanced Mathmatics Concepts (2nd Sem.)
Online AP Psychology (1st Sem.)/Online AP U.S. Government and Politics (2nd Sem.)
I think it should be a fun schedule, I will get college credit for just about all of them. I am especially looking forward to my Anatomy/Physiology class, we will get to work with doctors from one of the hospitals and get to go on actual ambulance runs.
Donna, I can't believe you figured me out on the "Who Am I." I thought mine would be harder to figure out this time!
Gary
1/23/06
Yeah, some years ago Donna, Karen and I had tea in the little tea house there. The Japanese Tea Garden is an enclosed (walled) garden within Golden Gate Park. Going there is like taking a little trip to Japan.
Donna
1/23/06
Hey, I remember the Japanese Tea Garden. That's a really pretty place.

Emily, what's AP?

I heard on the news this morning that the Valentine, NE guy who weighed over 1,000 pounds and has lost 650 pounds this past year will be having surgery today to remove 100 pounds of skin. Eeewwww.

Linz/Olivia, Taco Hot Pockets are on the school lunch menu today. What the heck are they? Are they any good?

Amanda, I love reading the Bushism's, keep 'em coming.

I need to work on my Who Am I's. Only one I know for sure is Teghan. Pretty sure I found Emily and Erika. No clue where Karen, Marsha and Mom are. They're usually easy to spot.

Gary
1/23/06
Who Am I Update! Anna, Emily, Erika, Karen, and Samantha have sent in their guesses already. I also received one entry that was unsigned and had no guesses on it; so if you think you sent yours in, but your name was not mentioned above, please try it again. Good luck, everybody!
Samantha
1/21/06
Hey There EveryOne! WoW "Who Am I" Was Hard! I Even Had Trouble Figuring Out Myne! Well I Gotta Go Byes!
Emily
1/21/06
Fun "Who Am I," but I agree this one was tricky. I think Teghan was the only one I knew for sure!

I didn't have a very busy week this week and it was a nice change! The new semester started on Monday, and for once I got my schedule all ironed out! I ended up adding Personal Finance to replace my study hall. All of my other classes have been going well too, it seems like I got stuck with all of my tough ones first semester! We have already started to register for next year's classes as well! Looks like just about all of the classes I am planning on taking will be either AP or college credit, so hopefully that will go well!

Mom has been feeling better, and we went shopping this afternoon. Dad and Erika got new cell phones last week, so we stopped into the cell store to try and replace mine. But, after waiting in line for a half an hour, we were told we couldn't replace it until August! So that was a bit of a bummer, but Erika and Dad do have brand new ones.

I watched the first night of AI, but I had dance during the second night, so I only saw a bit of the end. The auditions are always my favorite part of the show!

Amanda
1/21/06
OK, I promise I won't share EVERY Bushism (some aren't THAT funny) but the last few days have been too good to not share. Here is today's: "There's a huge trust. I see it all the time when people come up to me and say, 'I don't want you to let me down again.'" In Boston; October 3, 2000. He, he...
Amanda
1/21/06
Sha, right... The Who Am I's are just hard anymore. Everyone tries to be just elusive enough that you can't figure it out. We all sound about the same. Oh, and enough with the $100,000 joke. Tristen truly thought she could win it. She got on this morning to submit her Who Am I profile (only to find out she was too late--she had a BUSY week, she had to read a 150 page book before Friday for a test, on top of basketball & dance) and when she missed that she thought she could make our family rich by winning the money. She didn't get the "*joke."
Gary
1/21/06
The Who Am I Profiles are up. Let the games begin!

I just read an article that said the US rejects the "truce" offer. Dick Cheney said the following in regards to terrorists, "I think you have to destroy them." YOU THINK? Shouldn't you KNOW when you are dealing the security of a nation & its soldiers serving dangerously near said terrorists?

Also, the other thing that baffles me about this situation is the US notion that the threat of a new attack on US soil is bogus. They say there has been no upswing in terrorist "chatter" therefore we shouldn't pay much attention to bin Laden's threat. Apparently it is this "chatter" that alerts us to a terrorist attack. OK, do you think the terrorists might have gotten smarter & figured out a different way to communicate & plan attacks, since the "chatter" affect is published daily?

I thought the same thing on your second point. For a while there (until reporters like Keith Olbermann drew attention to it) they were sending out terrorist alerts it seemed like every couple of days. But since then -- for months -- there have been no alerts, not even like now when the #1 terrorist makes an actual threat. Huh? --Gary

I just filed our taxes this morning. They were easy this year. Getting back about the same as last year, just a little less. Only this year, no fun stuff (big screen TV last year) this time we are paying off a few things-- like my car!!! If we kept making payments we would be done in October, but I want to just pay it off & be done with it now! I can't wait for that. I wanted to see when we filed last year so I went back & read January 2005 postings. I read all my postings from the little internet cafe in Kensington. Ah, I want to go back SOOOO bad!!! And you guys were being doused with snow at the time!

Today's Bushism is another good one: "I hope we get to the bottom of the answer. It's what I'm interested to know." Idiot...

Gary
1/20/06
Okay, last call, you foot-draggers! (By which I mean Brent, Ryan, Sean, Tristen, and Zachary.) If you want in on all the thrills of the 11th Who Am I, you've got to do it today. Profiles go up tomorrow!
Amanda
1/19/06
Or, Bush could spin it like this: "See, we did it. They are on their knees begging for mercy. We succeeded." Even though it will be totally wrong, he could do it that way...

They have been watching me for awhile. Pretty much since I did two major research projects in college. One for my major: "Middle East Terror Groups" that offered insight, facts & history over the top 25 terror groups. And then the research for the project over profiling serial killers (and other bad people). So, I would say I am definitely on a watch list. Going to Aljazeera just gives you another side of the story to look at, the unbiased side. And it usually reports things MUCH quicker. But, I figure I got into Senator Hagel's office, so I can't be tagged too bad!

Amanda

Ah, much easier to read! :-) But you realize that if you visit that site, the NSA will be recording all your phone calls.... --Gary

"But I would expect Pat Robertson to urge everyone to see 'Brokeback Mountain' before Bush would negotiate a truce with bin Laden."

That's hilarious! Thanks for the laugh!

Amanda
1/19/06
So, anyone have any thoughts on bin Laden's truce offer? Aljazeera.net has a better story on it--more details... It's interesting. I'm very anxious to see the White House response.

First of all, my Arabic is a little rusty -- I'm impressed you got any details at all from that site. :-) With bin Laden making a threat on one hand and offering a truce on the other, the White House will certainly spin it as desperation on bin Laden's part; and maybe that's true. Even as inept as the U.S. pursuit of bin Laden has been, his organization can't be doing well. But I would expect Pat Robertson to urge everyone to see "Brokeback Mountain" before Bush would negotiate a truce with bin Laden. He'd strip every gear he has, throwing himself into reverse like that -- after years of "We don't deal with terrorists." --Gary

Donna

Sean, you should tell everyone what happened. When you said trailer I was thinking something smaller. This is a huge mess. Have they started cleaning it up? How much is it going to cost?

Karen, sorry to hear you're not feeling well. Sounds nasty.

I forgot to watch AI last night. I agree with Amanda, it's just on way too much. I really only like the auditions but I always get hooked into the competition too. And it's always big talk on the bus so you gotta watch to you fit in with your bus mates. ;-)

Nice quote today. Einstein was so cool.

Karen
1/19/06
Cool pictures Sean. This is my second day of being home sick. Caught some nasty flu bug and it's taking a long time to get rid of it. Hoping to go back to school tomorrow. Anxious to see the Who Am I answers, don't wait for Brent to send his in. Emily, Erika and I watched most of the first nights Idol and I watched just a little of last nights show (the drugs started to kick in). I like to watch the auditions, then I seem to lose my interest. Time for me head back to the couch :)

Feel better! --Gary

Who's who with Who Am I, you ask? Well, last night we received entries from Lori and Marsha, so that leaves only five of us on the sidelines: Brent, Ryan, Sean, Tristen, and Zachary. If you five want in, please get in by sometime Friday -- so we can have the next phase of the game up and ready to play Saturday morning. (Sooner = better, as I need some time to get the page ready.)
Amanda
1/18/06
We didn't watch American Idol last night, though we TiVoed the 1st hour, so we might get to it tonight. I don't know how I feel about it... I'm glad it's back, but I hate how much it's on! It really takes a time commitment! And already last night it messed up another show we watch. Commander in Chief got messed up because TiVo chose to record AI & not go to Commander. It was my fault really, just a settings thing & it's fixed now, but I bet it's not the last time AI overrides other tv shows. It's just on too much! They should have it on one night a week or maybe two for a half hour & stretch it out to 9 months like all other shows. Instead they cram it into 4 or 5 months.
Donna
1/18/06
Ah, American Idol. Good to have it back on the air. I missed it.

I wish we could witness the hanging of Bush. A recent Zogby poll says 52% would like Congress to impeach Bush if he wiretapped American citizens without a judge's approval. If we can't have the hanging, I'd settle for impeachment.

Why not both? --Gary

Amanda
1/18/06
In all fairness, it took us a while to accomplish all those movies! Gary have you seen the Kingdom of Heaven one? Just wondered what your thoughts were on it.

Yeah, I saw it last May in the theater (here's my review). My review is kind of critical, though I did give it an 8 rating. I'm still not sure why it didn't quite sit right with me the first time; I was reaching for something in my review that I never did nail down. Anyway, I watched it again on DVD and was much more favorable toward it. Good movie! --Gary

Gary

Wow, thanks to Amanda for all the reviews today -- 10 of 'em, which I think is a one-day record.

And thanks to Teghan for submitting her Who Am I -- Now tell your big sister to get busy on hers! :-)

I got a George W. Bushisms tear off calendar for graduation from Jackie & Claire and I wanted to share today's "Bushism."

"I want to thank you for taking time out of your day to come and witness my hanging." --At the dedication of his portrait; Austin, Texas; January 4, 2002.

Okay, thirteen people are now on board the Who Am I train, leaving only Brent, Lori, Marsha, Ryan, Sean, Teghan, Tristen, and Zachary on the platform. Sean has promised to get his done tomorrow night, because tonight (responsible young man that he is) he's got to do homework. Also, I think he's making porcupine meatballs. And them porcupines is hard to catch. Anyway, if you are one of the hold-outs, stop holding out! If you can get your answers in by Friday, we can be playing the game this weekend.

So, did anyone spot the next American Idol last night? Last night was Chicago, tonight is Denver.

Four more people have answered the call, so that leaves only Brent, Lori, Marsha, Olivia, Ryan, Sean, Teghan, Tristen, and Zachary unheard from. If you have power of attorney for any of these mentioned, please fill out the Who Am I page for them. :-)

At the furniture store I didn't think dad was acting to "happy." Saturday it was about 65 degrees and the next day we had a mini blizzard.

I still can't believe it either. Really great news!

Emily/Erika, I'd like your version of the trip to NE Furniture Mart. Your dad claims he wasn't nearly as 'happy' as you say.

We hit a record high yesterday of 69 degrees. What a beautiful weekend, perfect weather. This is what I wish our summers were like. And today the temp has dropped 35 degrees, chilly and windy with a slight chance of snow.

Unfortunately our three day week-end is over. We all have to go back today. Friday was a fun day though. Brent's doctors appointment went very well. He got some fun drugs was a feeling "good" when he was done. We all went to Nebraska Furniture Mart and bought a chair. The news Saturday was GREAT! Still hard to believe it :)

Those of you with 3-day weekends, I hope you're enjoying it. (I am!) Since I last mentioned it, only one more person has come forth with their "Who am I" answers -- meaning we've yet to hear from Brent, Donna, John, Lori, Marsha, Olivia, Paul, Ryan, Samantha, Sean, Teghan, Tristen, and Zachary. The sooner y'all answer, the sooner y'all play!

Oh yeah, I guess I will be the first on this page to allude to the big news from Minnesota: WOO-HOO! :-)

We have added a few more emails & pictures to our Girl Scout site about the Iraq stuff. We are going to send some more boxes over with Girl Scout cookies & school supplies & other things for local Iraqi children in March/April. Tristen got a pen pal letter back. It had a magnet, so she was very excited! Some girls got Iraqi money.

And you may not have noticed that the little image at top links to something, too.

Speaking of linking to something, if you click here you will be whisked to the "Who Am I" page -- which seven of you have already done. That means fourteen of you haven't! You'll have plenty of time to fill it out -- 3-day weekend! :-)

I'm so out of it with dates, I didn't even realize today was Friday the 13th! I even looked at the front page picture & thought, "okay, that's interesting... but, hey lots of people on this page like cats, so that is what Gary is going for here." Then I saw the top little thing with the calendar date circled & it slowly started dawning on me. Duh, I'm retarded!

Last day of work and school for all of us today. We all get tomorrow off! Semester breaks for us, Brent is taking the day off for a doctors appointment. In fact, we are all going to Omaha tomorrow. Brent is going to be knocked out for about two hours in the doctors office, so the girls and I will be hitting the mall. Westroads is next door to his doctors office, so it will be pretty handy. Haven't answered the Who Am I yet, still thinking over a few answers. Will have to send them in later today. Emily is taking semester tests today and will be out early.

Just did the new "Who Am I." Pretty easy to answer but it could be hard to figure people out based on their answers. I'm very hungry for pie now though...

Ha! :-) It's true, there's something about pie... Four people have sent in their answers so far, and I can say this one will be interesting! --Gary

The "Who Am I" game is coming along nicely -- should be ready in the next day or two. In the meantime, here's a preview of one of the questions:

If you had to eat in the same restaurant every day for a month (ordering whatever you wanted from the menu), which restaurant would you choose?

Just think about it, don't answer it here! And be careful not to share your answer with others... :-) And by the way, our last "Who Am I" game (#10) was in early June of last year.

Hey Emily, that's a nice looking schedule. I would want an art class instead of Speech though. You did a nice job too. If you and Ryan were here, I'd treat you both to Juice Stop. ;-)
I couldn't think of any new questions either. It'll be fun to do another 'Who Am I' game--it's been awhile.

Congratulations Ryan, great work!!
Well, like Mom said a few days ago I had State on Friday and Saturday. I had a good time, and I didn't do too bad. I was only one win away from making finals, so not too bad. Hopefully, I can place next year!
Tomorrow is the last day of the semester for me, then we have finals on Wednesday and Thursday, and no school on Friday. Then on Monday all of my classes will change except for Algebra and Chemistry. I got my new schedule today, I am planning on making a few changes to it, but this is what I should be having:
1. Chemistry
2. Psychology
3. Sociology
4. Speech
5. Algebra II
6. Language Comp.
7. American Government
Sociology isn't a definite yet, but hopefully I will either have that or another art class, so I won't have to waste my time in a study hall!
Glad to hear we have another "Who Am I" coming! We were trying to come up with some questions, but we have had so many we come up with too many good ones. A few ideas we did have were 1) What is your favorite season? 2) What is your favorite holiday? It's hard to come up with good ones!! Did anyone else have any ideas?

I've received a few suggestions, but would always welcome more! I will have the game ready by the end of the week, in time for the weekend. --Gary

We took down our Christmas stuff this weekend, what a job. I always wonder why we put up so much. How can it be so fun in early December, and then by January you are hating the stuff? Oh well, it is done now & the house feels a little less cramped.
The girls had a great weekend. They played all weekend with the stuff they got for Christmas. They didn't play with too much of it in Lincoln, so it all felt like new toys this weekend.
Tristen got back to school this morning & Teghan & I ran a few errands, so we are feeling a little better about being home.

** BIG NEWS **

Ryan won a HUGE award & was notified this weekend. He received the NCO of the YEAR award for his squadron! What does that mean? NCO -- Non commissioned officer -- so anyone with the rank of Staff Sergeant (E-5) thru Chief Master Sergeant (E-9) is eligible. They judge you on your work performance, dedication to the job & military, appearance, community contributions & your basic lifestyle. There are about 225 people in his squadron & it is a yearly award, so this is huge! They do the same award, only quarterly, which isn't as big of a deal & Ryan lost out on that one a few months ago, but now he doesn't care. He now will go into a competition with all the yearly NCO award winners at Sheppard & they will decide who is the best NCO on the base. Anyhow, send Ryan congrats, he deserves this. He has worked very hard for the last 9 years in the military & he is finally being recognized. (Nice timing, right? 10 months before he will get out.)

We are home! We left Lincoln Thursday at about 1:45 after lunch at Applebee's with my mom. We got to Wichita & the hotel at about 6. We ordered in Papa John's & vegged while watching Air Bud. We took showers & headed to bed by 10. Up at 8 we left town at 9. And here we are at home at 2! Glad to be here!!!

Glad to hear that there is a new Who Am I coming, looking forward to it. Didn't come up with any questions though. Been getting back in the routine of school and work. I even had to work until 5:30 yesterday!! Boy am I spoiled, didn't have to do much, but still didn't enjoy it. Have to do it again tonight, but then I'm done. Emily left for Des Moines at 7 this morning. Feeling better, but still has a nasty cough, so I hope that doesn't affect her debating.

Grandma, here is a link for the Fruit Saver we kept talking about. It's a little pricey & I didn't do any searching to see if it was cheaper anywhere else, but the few sites I saw the price was about the same. But, the people we know sure sold me on it, I may consider looking for one myself.

Hey, I'm starting to work on a new Who Am I? game. I've got some interesting questions lined up, but I could use some of your ideas too. Can you think of a question or two that would be good for the next game? Send 'em to me!

There has been one small tweak to the Christmas list, so if you plan to start your Christmas shopping today you'd better check the list again. :-)

Another great game last night! After a kind of lukewarm first half, the Rose Bowl finished with a real nail-biting final five minutes. And now, no more college football for another eight or nine months... bleahh...

Wow, that email from the guys in Iraq is really cool! Makes you feel in the Christmas mood even after Christmas. That was really cool that the Girl Scouts put that on!

Thanks for the link to the photo, Amanda. I guess you don't really appreciate Chips Ahoy until you can't get 'em.

Here's a little more catching up: I've brought the links page up to date. We now have five complete years of "cool sites"! I'd like to draw your attention to some good ones over the Christmas holidays that you may have missed:

  • A good article from Harpers Magazine called "The Christian Paradox: How a Faithful Nation Gets Jesus Wrong" -- a long read but worth it!
  • A cool kaleidoscope to play with
  • Probabilities in Monopoly -- a must-read for you Monopoly-heads out there
  • The Amazing Dots -- a very strange optical illusion
  • "Bound for Glory" -- a Library of Congress exhibition of very rare color photos of America in the 1930s

The new Christmas list is up! Emily and Erika drew the names a couple of days ago, and I only just now got them up on the page (sorry for the delay). Thanks again, E & E!

I agree with Lindsey: the Christmas break seemed to go by too fast. I don't like having to go back to the world of alarm clocks... :-) But it was a great Christmas!

Back to school for me tomorrow! Not looking forward to it. This break went by too fast and we got ripped off for a break this year. I had my first day back to dance today and that was rough after not doing it for a couple weeks. Then went over to Grandma's for a while after dinner and then a Juice Stop run for me and Amanda. I went to Circuit City today and bought Wedding Crashers (it came out today) so thanks to Amanda and Ryan and the girls for the Gift Certificate there for my birthday! We went to HuHot last night with Amanda, Ryan, the girls, my Mom, Dad, Sean, and Livy last night and that was good. Had fun. Well, not much other news, so I'll talk to you guys later!

Back to work and school for all of us today (well, almost all). Erika was home sick today. We have all been having cold/flu. Emily probably should have stayed home too, but went in anyway. Hard to get going, but good to have at least one day over with. Sean -- good pictures, looks like you had a good time. Are the Metcalfs still in Nebraska?

I'll answer that since I'm right here. Ryan left for TX this morning around 10, I understand, and while I was at Grandma's tonight Amanda got a call from him around 8:30-9:00 saying he'd arrived safe and sound. Amanda and the girls expect to leave on Thursday. Feel better, you Sioux City guys! Sean has been feeling crummy himself these past several days, with head congestion, sore throat, and other symptoms.

    Feel better, everybody! --Gary

Hey, Sean just alerted me to the fact that he has posted some photos he took earlier this evening (just a few hours ago) at Grandma's. See them on his Picture Trail page by clicking on the "Family Pics" block and entering this password: ourfamily4233

On an unrelated note: Woohoo! First post of the new year! :-) Also, Emily and Erika have done the name-drawing for next year's (ooops, make that this year's) Christmas list. I'll have it up sometime Monday. Thanks, E & E, for doing that!
