Well Ryan, I like your costume :-)! You guys all look cool, but where's Sasha and Pete's costumes? Great job on your pumpkins too. We didn't carve any this year but we painted a few. Not doing much for Halloween this year, my Mom had to go out of town for work and had to leave this morning, wasn't very happy about that. Other than that haven't been doing much other than school and dance. We do get today and tomorrow off though so that makes a nice long weekend.
Happy Halloween!!

Hey everybody! I haven't really had time to write in lately, things have been busy. But, they are starting to slow down this week, mainly because we have finished with the first debate tournament for this year! I am glad to be done with it. Although, I did do better than I expected. I ended up with 2 wins and 2 losses at the Spencer tournament, so not too bad. And it got me enough points, along with last years, to offically be considered varsity and get my letter! We have an in town tournament on the 19th that I will be competiting in. Then I am going to be judging at another in town tournament on the 12th. So I will be busy with that 2 weekends in a row, but I am thinking it will be fun to judge for a change, not to mention much less stressful!
Anyway... Fun Halloween pictures, but Ryan, we don't understand your costume. Don't you always dress like that? :)
And Donna, thanx again for the Halloween card! Erika has to quote it now everytime she goes out to feed the cats.
Hope John has a fun birthday! and Happy Halloween everyone!!
Donna

I don't get it Ryan, why didn't you dress up? I can't look at that picture without laughing! Great costumes. Nice job on the jack-o-lanterns. Tristen, you did a great job and he looks kinda like the way you said you were feeling when I talked to you Saturday. I'm glad you were feeling better so you didn't have to miss the party. Looks like it was a lot of fun.
Olivia, what is your costume this year?
Livy
10/31/05
Hey evryone! Nice costume Ryan, and let me just say the taped glasses work. I was just drawing dogs when I just started to write a poem, but Linz and grandma helped me too.
Here it is:
It's a simple life for these dogs. Because they are
strays, they never got along. They run a lot, they roam free,
they don't have a home you see.
They sleep in garbage cans, barrels, and run down cars,
sometimes even under the stars.
They would chase a dove, for just some love,
and if you give them care, it's like hugging a teddy bear.
Adopt a dog, and give them a home,
for them to call a place their own.
So what do you all think? Good? Talk to you all later!!!

Hey everyone! Saturday night I went to Rocaberry Farm with my friend Kylie. My favorite part was the Hayrack ride, although I did like the Haunted House, except for the end, Kylie got so freaked out! We almost fell over on the twisty thingy in the Haunted House. But on the way to Rocaberry, we got something to eat, we ate at Don and Millies! Kylie tried a fry in her potato soup, then dunked it in her pop, then she ate it, she said it tasted awfull, so she did what she would always do, do it again! HaHa! I like your poem and your joke Tristen! Did you make them up? But tonight I'm going trick-or-treating with Kylie in my neighborhood, then go over to her house to spend the night. Well talk to you all later!
Happy Halloween, everyone!

Hey Gary~ You forgot to remind us about Daylight Savings Time & we forgot! Of course, fall is the good time to forget, because I got up at 9:30 & I thought "crap, I slept in again, I NEED to get some stuff done, I wanted to wake up early!" Then Ryan told me, "hey, the computer changed its clock for DST." So, it was a nice surprise, and it gave me the oomph to get stuff done this morning, with the extra hour that I had!
Yeah, it's weird. I had reminded myself about it several times this past week, and we even talked about on Saturday night... and I still forgot. Got up this morning and reacted just like y'all did. Sorry everybody! --Gary

Okay, one down, and a bunch more to go! :-) Scooter took the hit today for obstruction of justice, several counts -- punishable by up to 30 years in prison and a fine of $1.25 million. Clearly Scooter didn't do all this on his own, so one could assume (with 30 years looking him in the face) he may just "turn" and help the ongoing investigation by filling in some details on his bosses (Cheney and Bush). This is just getting started, and it's just getting good. The current Grand Jury's term has expired as of today, but Fitz will be establishing a new one to continue the investigation -- something which wasn't a sure thing until today's announcement. (Though the signs were there: just a few days ago, with the GJ term about to expire, Fitzpatrick not only created a website for the first time but also rented a much larger office space.) Stay tuned!
Gary
10/28/05
Hi Erika-- I don't have any costume ideas for Halloween; and even if I did, it couldn't be more scary than these two trick-or-treaters! :-)
Stay tuned to the news today, y'all. Fitzgerald (the Special Prosecutor) is making an announcement at 1 pm our time (I think), and he is expected -- though no one knows yet, it's all rumors! -- to indict Scooter Libby, and not to indict Karl Rove. All the Republican spinners are going to say this is a victory for the White House, etc etc, but the fact is it only takes one indictment for this to go to court -- and in court the whole story can be presented. Plus, Fitz is expected to announce that Rove is still under investigation. It ain't over yet, folks. Those of us who can remember Watergate know that it can take months for all the pieces to fall into place.
But there's one thing we can be sure of: The White House will try to distract the media's attention. Oh, did I mention that Bush is giving a "major speech" on Terror in just a few hours...? :-)
Good luck with your debate tomorrow, Emily!
Erika & Emily

Donna, I did feel much better last night. Enough that we went into town to go to McAllisters Deli for dinner. I got potato soup in a bread bowl & sweet tea (they have the best!). I ate about 1/3 of it! And after an hour I was ready to come home!!
Tristen is home sick today. She woke up with a sore throat & a swollen lymph node, which usually indicates strep...

This just in from CNN...
-- President Bush "reluctantly" accepts Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers's request to withdraw her nomination.
Woohoo!
I guess that's okay... Her nomination already has done as much damage to Bush as it would ever do. Still, it would have been fun to watch the Senate hearings. :-) So who does Bush nominate now? (Or rather, Laura, as I understand Mier's nomination was her idea...) A real Bible-toter that even the right-wing "Christian" lunatics can get behind? Or someone more moderate seeing as how Bush's political capital has all but dried up? Should be interesting! --Gary

Hello all. Teghan & I are home alone today for the 1st time. Ryan went back to work this morning. I felt crummy yesterday, almost felt like the stomach flu, on top of everything! But today, knock on wood, I feel pretty OK. I took the surgical tape off of the incision sites while I was in the shower this morning, it almost made me pass out a little, but I'm OK! :) Anyhow, we have NOTHING planned today, so I can't let down any expectations. I actually don't have anything specific to do until Friday morning, so I am good...

What great weather the past couple days! Swept a layer of leaves off the deck and now I don't want to be inside. Carol stopped by this morning on her way to other errands, then Sean stopped by on his way from class. I had him hang a shade that had been laying in wait for him. Thanks, Sean!! Then, Paul stopped in and, as usual, I had chores for him too. Cleaned out the dryer vents and hopefully got the stool to quit running. Thanks to you too!!! Erika, Thanx for your nice letter, I really enjoyed hearing from you. Always nice to get an update from the kitties, and I'll never tell who your favorite is... Tristen, what fun to talk to you the other nite, I didn't know it, but you are a poet. I love it!! And keep those jokes coming, they make my day! Amanda, hope you are feeling better, don't start that new job too soon. Be sure you feel well enough to handle it. Linz and Liv, are you guys hibernating???
Hi to all the Hatgidakis clan! Hope everyone is feeling well.

Brrrr. Chilly this morning, with the thermometer right on 32 when I left the house. Had to scrape (not merely squeegee) all four sides of the car -- something you people with garages are spared. I know I'm on record as preferring winter to summer; but of all the manifestations of winter, scraping car windows is the one I like least.
I took yesterday off, and among other errands I took my car in for an oil change. A well-dressed late-middle-aged guy in a shiny new SUV pulled in behind my car as the shop guys worked on it. After a few minutes he got out and walked over to me. "Is that your Chrysler?" he asked. Based on nothing more than his apparent money, I pegged him as a Republican and figured he wanted to take issue with my "Impeach Bush" magnet. I said, "Yeah." He jerked his head toward my car and asked, "Where'd you get that magnet?" I kinda braced myself and said, "I made it." He nodded and said, "You got any more with you?" :-) I didn't have (maybe I should start!), but I wrote down my website (http://www.cafepress.com/333666/) and gave it to him. I can't really quit my day job yet, but I am selling a few! All thanks, of course, to the incompetence and lies of George Bush. Thank you, Dub!

Hi Erika, I got your letter this weekend. What a nice note! You know Mojo really isn't so mean anymore. He hardly ever growls and almost never bites so I don't think there's any reason to be scared of him now. So the next time you come down you'll have to try to pet him yourself. He is very nice and friendly most of the time.

Hello all. Well, I am here. Thursday & Friday were a little rough. I started feeling sick Thursday at about noon. I couldn't eat anything after that, even the thought of water made me feel quesy. When I went to bed that night I took my usual round of allergy meds & then my vicodin for pain (which I take every 3 hours) and then a Zantac, which is supposed to help with the uneasy stomach. I took all these on an empty stomach. I was up at 6:30 throwing up, and again at 8:30--IF YOU HAVE A WEAK STOMACH READ NO FURTHER-- when I got sick the second time it was all stomach acid & bile. It was the worst thing I had experienced in a while. It scared me too. Anyhow, I stopped taking the pain meds and just laid in bed in one position. MY doctor was was out of town at a meeting, but they got another doctor to call in a prescription for a different medication & Ryan & Teghan went & got it for me. I began taking that with a jar of baby food. Crazy, I know, but it works. Baby food fruits are good for you & easy on the stomach. I have gotten some of my appetite back, and have slowly gotten feeling better. I am back on the vicodin for pain, which is what makes it more bearable...
Anyhow, long story short, I am here. Feeling OK. I still have the weekend. Ryan is OK to take off Monday & Tuesday if need be, so that is nice.
I have a great doctor, he called me last night at 7 because he had gotten the nurses messages and he wanted to check up on me. He told me he would call again today & if I wasn't doing any better he would meet me at the ER & go from there...
We are going to be watching the game here soon, glad it is televised for us finally. Wish I was feeling better, some good tailgating hors'devours sound good..... Anything with substance sounds good, who am I kidding!!

Good to hear you guys got the box, we had fun putting it all together! Hopefully you will be all better soon!
Not a whole lot has been going on with us this week. I had a Mayor's Youth Commission meeting on Monday and was interviewed for the news. Unfortunately we accidently watched the wrong channel! But, I did hear that I was on, so that was fun. This weekend we are planning on going to Ponca or Stone park for an afternoon. All of the leaves are starting to change and fall, so it should be pretty to see. Next Saturday I have my first debate tournament for the year in Spencer, I'm looking forward to it!

Thank you to everyone for the wonderful box we just got. Teghan was more exited than anyone! She loved the coloring book and the tootsie pops and she has the lid closed on it so bugs don't get it!?! Everything Amanda got was everything she likes unfortunately she can't eat much yet. UPDATE: Amanda got sick today. The doctor prescribed a diffrent nausea medication. We were up early this morning because she was sick. Maybe she won't be up and running by the end of the weekend. Again Thanks to everyone!

Fun day for me today. No school, teachers convention so I get today and tomorrow off. Went to our new mall and did lots of shopping. Even got some christmas presents. Thanks Gary, just an another update. It wasn't a "feeding tube" it was a breathing tube. Easily mistaken. Amanda is very tired and will be sleeping off the medicine, I will be Mr. Mom for a couple of days. Note to Gma: Amanda's voice sounded better after she got something to drink.

Hey I just got off the phone with Grandma, who informed me that Amanda called her on her way home from the hospital. That's right, it's all done and she's already headed home. Pretty groggy, she said, and feeling a bit of pain from some irritation caused by the feeding tube. But both those things will wear off soon.
Welcome home, Amanda!

Indictments may still come today, but even if they don't this has already been a day of amazing news stories. First off, this morning came a story a story in the New York Daily News which lead with this: "An angry President Bush rebuked chief political guru Karl Rove two years ago for his role in the Valerie Plame affair, sources told the Daily News. 'He made his displeasure known to Karl,' a presidential counselor told The News. 'He made his life miserable about this.'"
On the surface, it looks like an attempt to distance Bush from the whole thing: When Our Leader found out about this awful thing two years ago, he was very angry, etc etc. But what it is really saying is: At the very least Bush knew about it, Bush lied about it (remember when he said that anyone involved in this would be fired immediately?), and Bush has obstructed justice in not reporting a crime. When this all comes into light, it will almost certainly connect Bush directly to the conspiracy.
And even more interesting: Where did this story come from? Not from Fitzgerald, who is leak-proof to the point of being legendary. No, it had to come from somebody involved, and it came out on purpose, for a reason. For weeks we've been hearing about battles within the White House, with Bush, Cheney, and Rove all turning on and attacking each other. Most of the recent leaked "rumors" have had Cheney as their target: "Cheney is the focus of the investigation," "Libby's story doesn't add up," "Cheney aide flips," etc. Today's story -- on the surface, as I said, looking pro-Bush -- is actually aimed directly at him. As someone on the internet said today, "Folks, we're witnessing nuclear war in the White House."
I know I keep talking about indictments... They are expected any time now. This Grand Jury is supposed to have everything wrapped up by October 28, so the indictments will come no later than that. Unless Fitzgerald asks for an extension, which is possible. It's also possible, I think, that he's purposely holding back with the indictments, letting the tension work in hopes that others will come forward with evidence or testimony. Rumors so far suggest that not one but two people have come forth to testify, both Cheney aides. I say again, interesting times!
Gary
10/19/05
Wowza, big news day. No indictments yet, but rumors are flying that as many as two dozen people may be charged. Again I say, these are rumors, but... And this suggests that Fitzgerald has not limited himself to the relatively simple issue of outing one CIA agent; instead, he is apparently going to go after the much bigger issue of the war itself, and the deceptions and forgeries that were used to get us into it. Which could get very, very big.
And also, I just saw that Hurricane Wilma has not only been upgraded to a Category 5 storm, but is now officially "the most intense storm ever recorded in the Atlantic." Yeesh. Florida could really get pasted by this one.
Gary
10/18/05
Keep one eye (or ear) on the news tomorrow, y'all. Could be a big day. The Grand Jury could be handing down indictments tomorrow -- and the people receiving them could include Karl Rove ("Bush's Brain"), Scooter Libby (Cheney's chief of staff), and even Dick Cheney himself. (I understand that rumors are floating around Washington right now that Cheney may just resign -- for "health reasons," no doubt -- and that Condoleeza Rice would be suggested for Vice President.) Of course, it's also possible that no indictments will be handed down, but that seems unlikely -- most are predicting multiple indictments. Which if so, this is going to be big, big, BIG. Watergate big. And this isn't just a break-in and a cover-up, like Watergate; this is, at the low end of the scale, treason on the part of some ranking White House members -- and at the high end, the President of the United States using forged documents and outright lies to involve the country in an unprovoked and illegal war. Just depends on how far Fitzgerald is willing and able to push it. Also coming this week, possibly tomorrow, is Tom DeLay getting booked -- fingerprints and mug shots!
And of course, it would also be wise to expect another terror-alert from the Feds, to distract the press from all of the above.... Interesting times! :-)
Karen

Amanda, thanks for the info on your surgery. Never a fun thing to have to do, but better than going through that pain again. It is amazing what doctors and modern medicine can do. I'm sure it will all go very well. Always surprises me how fast a body will recover. Keep us posted as best you (or Ryan) can..... oh, congratulations on the new job :)

Oh, I guess it might not be clear from the last posting. I got a job! Finally! I was offered a conditional employment offer (pending some tests, that I have to go do tomorrow) at the Texas Youth Commission's Victory Field Correctional Academy. I will be a case manager 2. I will handle 16-20 cadettes who are incarcerated because of a felony. I should be starting November 1st (depending on how the surgery & recovery goes--if not, it will be the 15th) and will work 9-6 M-F (one of the downsides-- since it is located in Vernon, Texas which is about a 40 minute drive). But, I am excited for this job. I have always been intrigued by prisons and felons, so this just adds the juvenile aspect to it all. It would not be for everyone, and it isn't something I would want to do forever, but it is certainly one of the better things I have applied for here.

Olivia, I am so sorry to hear about Oreo. I know how special he was to you. He was a sweet little hamster even though he sometimes liked to keep you awake at night running on his wheel. Do you think you will look for another hamster or hold out for a dog?
Have you seen commercials for the movie Dreamer with Dakota Fanning? It looks like a movie you would love. Eyes of the World is having a sale now. Let me know if you want to go, I'll probably go sometime this weekend.

OK... Surgery update... I will be going in Wednesday for the surgery. I am not sure what time it will be yet, I will know more Tuesday afternoon. I have my pre-op appointment this afternoon. Should be a pretty standard procedure, taking about an hour. They are doing it using laparoscopic surgery (with the little camera, so it will be 3 little incisions), however, I do have some signs that there might be a complication or two, and so while they are in there they are doing an internal X Ray to make sure a stone didn't "escape" from the gall bladder, where it can wreak havoc on other parts of my body, like the liver & pancreas & intestines. Also, there is a chance they will have to do it the old fashioned way, but we won't know until we are in surgery.
So, for now. I am here & doing OK. No problems since last week. Having the surgery on Wednesday gives me time to go to my pre employment testing tomorrow, so hopefully I am ready to start by November 1st.
The laparoscopy, as you and I have already discussed on the phone, is a breeze. And after that, no more painful "attacks." It's all good! --Gary

Anyone else notice that we get death toll #'s for the Tsunami in January & the recent earthquake in Pakistan, but nothing for our own tragic hurricanes? Not that I want to know especially, but why is it hidden? (I know why of course, so its a rhetorical question...)
Yeah, I understand FEMA has officially stopped counting, even though bodies are still being discovered. (There was a story a few days ago of someone returning to their house in New Orleans, which had supposedly been checked by FEMA and had the big "all clear" sign painted on it -- yet he discovered his grandmother's body inside....) And there are still thousands of people, mostly kids, listed as "missing" -- but who may in fact be separated from their families in different cities. The thinking, I guess, is that the lower the numbers, the less inept FEMA/Bush look; but I would think that ship has sailed. --Gary

Gary~ Where is the Husker page for today?
Well, I only have pictures of the tickets for home games (scanned). This is our first away game of the season, so no ticket image. Last year I used the picture of T&t for away games and would have done so again this year, but Thursday -- when I had to make up the page -- I was home sick, and all my football graphics (including that picture) were on my work computer, not my home one. So...the weekend page was something I threw together from home. More than y'all wanted to know, right? :-) --Gary

But today me, Linz, and mom are going to a baby shower for a friend. Oh, and somehow I didn't get any homework yesturday and this weekend. It's really cool because last weekened it took me friday night, saturday, sunday, and something that was due on tuesday I finished monday night. I had like 8 things to do at the least. Hye everybody! No school for Erika or me today, another teacher work day I guess. I am feeling better today, but still not 100%, I guess it is a good thing that we do have a long weekend coming up. Sure hope Amanda & Gary are doing better today too, being sick is no fun!!
I'm sure it will be even less fun when I go back to school, and have to make up all of my work! I already know I have missed a Chemistry, Business/Law, and an Economics test, not to mention the Humanities trip and debate round I missed. So, hopefully all of that won't be too hard to make up. But, I am glad that I at least got my PAST done. I actually didn't think it was all that bad, easier than the pre-ACT one that I took last year anyway. They were already handing out ACT & SAT registration stuff, so I guess I will be taking the ACT at least in April, so fun times ahead:)
Feel Better Everybody!!

Amanda, geez -- hope the doctors find out whats wrong. You are too young to have gall bladder problems. I always think of that for much older people. Sounds kind of like what Brent gets -- but I'm sure thats not it. Emily is somewhat improved now, but still not doing much. No school for Emily or Erika tomorrow, so their week-end has started. Gary I had that thing with my head last week too. Just a dull ache and felt stuffy. Took a few Alka-seltzer cold tablets and that seemed to fix it. Get better everyone!!!

I am home sick today too! Course, I am always home, but you know... Yesterday, I got an awful pain in my abdomen & it just got worse as the day went on. Eventually Ryan took off work early came home & got us & took me to the hospital. They hooked me up to an IV & gave me some drugs, one for pain, one to stop the vomiting. They did bloodwork & XRays. I have to go in today or tomorrow for an ultrasound of my abdomen. They are thinking gall bladder, but they don't know. I had these same unexplained abdomen pains. Today the "pain" is gone, but my entire abdomen area feels like it has been punched over & over & over... Tristen stayed home today to help me out, Ryan HAD to go to work today. I haven't eaten anything for 2 days, because it all comes back. Anyways... Lots of sickies on here!
Dang, feel better everybody! --Gary

Poor Ema is home sick again today. Not any better, in fact I think she is a bit worse. Loaded up on thera-flu, soups and juices at the store this morning. Anna, I have school pictures tomorrow too :)
Emily, I've been home for two days too, but not with the flu. Mine is all in my head -- literally. A kind of headache/earache thing -- feels like the pressure thing you get in an airplane, just before your ears "pop." I'm heading for the drugstore soon to see if the pharmacist can recommend anything off-the-shelf. --Gary

Hey everyone! I had my PSAT today also. It took me from 9-12:30 because we had 5 sections and they were 30 minutes each. Then as I thought today would be easy after that, I had a HUGE math test last hour. So I only had one class of not testing. But I don't have school tomorrow so that made today all worth it. Sam and I are going to the MOA and we are going to do some shopping. I had a field trip yesterday to the Walker. I Love going there! My favorite part of the place would have to be the Sculpture Garden. That has the Spoon and Cherry. Picture day is on Friday and other then that not to much else is new here.

I love gravy!! One of my favorite suppers is biscuits and gravy. Amanda, too bad it didn't work out to sub this time, but I bet they will call again. I think that would be a great job for you. What grades can you teach? Sean, good call on the teacher -- more people need to do that! Poor Emily is home sick today. She had her PSAT test this morning and the field trip this afternoon. She drove herself to school and took the test, but came home at noon. Been on the couch since. I'm guessing she will miss dance class tonight and probably school tomorrow. She and Erika have Friday off, so it will be a long week-end for her.
Feel better, Emily! --Gary

Happy Birthday Ryan! What an honor to have your birthday fall on national gravy day. Some gravies are like white sauces, and I know how you love white sauce. Or is it any white food? ;-)

Hey Gary, I just checked the cool site. I had to do a Supreme Court project for my Business/Law class using that site a few days ago. I thought it was pretty intresting and I was going to send it in to be a possible cool site... pretty neat :)

Hey everyone! Me and Dad just got back from a farm that had lots of pumpkins! We picked out about 5. Thay had 5 black cats, and 1 big black lab that I fell in love with! He didn't have any liscense tags on his collar I don't think so I called him Buddy. Everytime I said come here Buddy, he came, even when I didn't say Buddy he still came. Everytime you would pet his head he would plop down on the ground and lick your face! Dad said he loved me a lot, I would say the same about him. It was really hard to leave him! Whenever I tried to look at a pumpkin he would come up and lick my face till I couldn't resist and pet him! He knew my weakness, loving dogs, and was he loving! He seemed about 1 year old or so. But was he a cutie!!! Talk to you all later!
Happy Birthday Ryan!!!!!!!!!!

Ew Donna, I hate biscuits and gravy too. I don't remember saying my clothes smell like gravy, I believe it was "My hand smells like my sandwich." That was a good sandwich though...
Anyway, I have a fairly busy day tomorrow, but I will get out of all my classes, so thats a plus! I am taking an SAT type test all morning. Then lunch and a field trip for my humanities class. I am hoping it will be a fun trip. We are taking an architectural scavenger hunt around the historical area of downtown. Then we are taking a tour of the art center to see the temporary architecture exhibit outside there. Then I have dance that afternoon, and I will also have tons of homework for missing all of my classes! So, I'm hoping that all isn't too bad! I need to start writing my final debate speeches as well. We finalized the list for the Spencer competition on the 29th, and I will be competiting in the varsity division this year, so it should be good!
That is fun that you will be substitute teaching now, Amanda! Be sure to keep us updated on it!

Yes, Teghan wanted me to dress up but it couldn't be exactly like hers. I guess she thinks everyone should always wear gowns and tiara's and really what's wrong with that?
I just heard that in honor of national gravy day tomorrow, a few guys at work will be making our entire floor biscuits and gravy. Gross. What is the attraction to gravy anyway? And sadly, I'm afraid I'll be paraphrasing Emily--my clothes smell like gravy.
Mmm, can't wait.

I know, isn't it weird. I feel bad that I wasn't prepared today, but on the other hand it wasn't quite my fault. I guess my interview was the day I picked up my application packet. Tristen thinks it is SO cool that I will be subbing. She has always wanted me to teach full time. I don't think it would be too bad teaching her class. I know half the kids from Girl Scouts, or from being the room mom for the last few years. And I'm still considered a "cool" mom, so it would be OK. For now...
I will get a picture of her new haircut. It is hard because the cutest part is the back part, so that will be hard to shoot. She loves it though. Teghan told me that you (Donna) were going to have a pink costume with purple shoes and be just like her... (Even though hers isn't pink or purple)

Hey, I just got this CNN news alert: -- Informant in Iraq admits information about a terror plot against New York subway was a hoax, sources tell CNN.
Makes you wonder all the more about Bush planting this stuff when he's needing a diversion.
Be sure to watch Keith Olbermann tomorrow night (7 pm Wednesday on MSNBC). He's going to do the whole hour (I think) on the "coincidence" that terror-alerts always seem to happen when the White House needs to distract the media's attention. Olbermann is one of the few reporters in America who would dare tackle a subject like this. Should be good! --Gary

Amanda, you got called in to sub and you haven't had an interview yet? That's seems a little odd. I bet you'll like subbing. Would you ever accept a job subbing for Tristen's class? That would be funny. I bet Tristen would love it. Tristen was telling me about her new haircut (Lucas doesn't like it). Can you send pictures?
I had a nice chat with Teghan too until she lost focus and every time I said something she said, 'what?' But she did enjoy telling me all about her Halloween costume. Her choice was a big surprise. ;-)

Well, I finally got a chance to bring in some income today & I was unprepared! I put my name on the substitute teacher list for Iowa Park schools about 2 or 3 weeks ago. I hadn't heard anything yet, and I knew it would take a while, as they do background checks, etc. And I figured once they called me I would find someone here in town that could do drop in care for Teghan when I got called to sub. Well, this morning at 7:35 I got a call from Kidwell (the school Tristen was at for K-2) to sub today & tomorrow! I was unprepared, because I thought the administration office would call me to interview, or go through the basics or something, so I had to say no! I told them I could tomorrow, but there is a good chance the person that does it today will do it tomorrow too! Oh well, at least I know I am on the list. Today I will find drop in care for Teghan, just in case for future use.

Just read that a fire yesterday completely destroyed Aardman Studios, where the Wallace & Gromit movies are made. What a shame! Their latest movie ("The Curse of the Were-Rabbit") just opened three days ago, so I hope it makes lots of money for them -- they're going to need it. And it looks like it will be a money-maker: In its first weekend it was the #1 movie in the U.S., forcing Jodie Foster's "Flightplan" out of the top spot. Nick Park was cool about it though; referring to the earthquake in Indonesia he said, "Even though it is a precious and nostalgic collection and valuable to the company, in light of other tragedies, today isn't a big deal." Complete story here.
I just got back from a field trip! Whenever we finish one of our book projects here at work, we take a day-trip as a group as a sort of little celebration. (It's a nod to the original publisher of our book and his wife who used to go on a photo safari to Africa whenever they finished one.) So today we went to the SAC Museum and then had lunch at Mahoney State Park. Very nice!

Gary, it is funny you should say the last 30 seconds of the game were the worst, because that is all of the game that we saw! We went to Dallas that day for a little fun. Ryan's birthday is Wednesday so we decided to go this past weekend. We went back to the Stonebriar mall & did a little shopping, a lot of window shopping, and some ice skating. That was interesting! Tristen did pretty good, but she was mostly excited because she got to use the ice skates that have been in her closet forever. Ryan did well, and he attributes that to roller blading, which he used to do often. Teghan wasn't too bad herself! Me, I sucked. End of story. I went around once & that was it. It KILLED my ankles! You have to steady yourself on those little blades, so your ankles take the brunt of it in those skates. No fun for me! We also went out to eat at our favorite Dallas eatery--Joe's Crab Shack (we have already figured out we will have to go to Des Moines or Topeka to get our fix once we are back in NE). It was while we were at Joe's that we saw the last 30 seconds of the game. It was awful. When Tech scored, our natural instinct was to feel punched in the gut, right? Imagine that feeling, but then hearing glorious cheers all around you! It was like a shock to the system. It just wasn't right. We have never watched a NE v. TX or OK game out in public here before, it was not a nice experience.
No job prospects for me... Of course... I think I have applied to 20-25 so far. I go to an "Imagine Graduation" fair on campus tomorrow. I will just get all the needed info for graduation. I'm kind of excited!
No work for Ryan today & no school for T, so it was a nice 3 day weekend. Ryan goes to class at 3:30 today though. So that ruins it a little.

Hey Lindsey, yea I have been busy, it really felt good to work on stuff again when I had the short break from school.. I had my welding mask for a 5 minute speech I had to give about myself for my public speaking class. I gotta be honest, I will be glad when I am finished with this class. I hear school is throwing a lot of homework at you and Olivia. My College Algebra class is at 7:30 p.m. and the instructor is tired of teaching math all day so she makes a lot of mistakes. Last class period she wrote down the last few steps of a problem completely wrong and got a completely wrong answer and was moving on to the next problem. The entire class sat there and stared at the wrong answer and no one said anything! I couldn't believe it, it made me so mad. I had to call it out and tell her where she made a mistake. She should not be doing that and confusing an entire class. After I called out her mistake other students were saying "yea" and some of them looked less confused. I know that I depend on what an instructor teaches since it is hard for me to learn out of the book and these classes fly by so fast.
Speaking of which, I am going to wash my car and do homework!!

We had fun over at Grandma's house yesterday. After the game (which was great except for the last 30 seconds), we made a fire in her outdoor fireplace on the deck. Lindsey and Livy came over, and we roasted hotdogs on sticks; and then later made s'mores. (Lindsey's technique with marshmallows was excellent, by the way.) It was a perfect night for a fire. But eventually we went inside and watched the extended version of "Return of the King." Which didn't finish until 12:30! But it was great to see -- first time for me, believe it or not. A great fall night!

Hey everyone! I got a new computer game called Zoo Vet. It's really cool. Also, real vets created the animals and some other stuff. Like if it's just a regular check up, or if they have a broken leg, or something like that, you cure their diesese and stuff. I like it a lot. It was only $15 dollars. Well, I gotta go, Talk to you all later!
P.S. Nice comment Donna on middle schoolers!!:)

Geez, it was a busy news day. Maybe that's why Bush has been looking so odd lately. You know "being a president is hard work." And what would we do without good ol' Keith Olbermann?
Nice pictures of the parade. Erika, did you have fun? Okay, anyone else ever been in a parade before? Not me.
Karen, I like the idea of getting the kids involved but I gotta say that sounds nasty. Maybe Sean will buy some. Apple butter always reminds me of Sean. ;-)

It's been cool here too. We did turn the furnace on a bit last night and even had the first fire in the fireplace for the season. Today was just about perfect. Crazy day at school. They are doing a fund raising project by making apple butter. So they had all the older kids cutting apples. The gym was full of kids with knifes cutting thousands of apples!! Can tell this was a private school, don't imagine too many public schools would allow it. They spent all morning cutting, then the parents came to cook them. The school smelled great, apple butter cooking in all the classrooms. Don't think I want to buy any, after seeing how some of the kids were cutting them up. Not sure they got all the bad spots out, and lots of kids were coming out at recess to show me their cuts on the their hands -- GROSS!! Erika had a fun time at the parade. Just about time to take her to the tailgate party before game.

Boy, how would you like to be the White House press secretary right now? I always thought it must have been a tough job during Watergate, but back then there was only one story to spin. Just look at what's on press secretary Scott McLellan's plate these days:
The CIA Leak case (called by some "Plame-Gate" though I hope that dumb name doesn't catch on): It's looking like several powerful people will be indicted on this soon, most likely including the evil Karl Rove. The White House is doing everything it can to distract us from this, however, including (on the same day!) a "major speech" on terror and later a terrorist warning for New York City! The great Keith Olbermann on MSNBC last night, though, was not fooled: "We've cobbled together in the space of the last few hours a list of at least thirteen occasions on which, whenever there was news that significantly impacted the White House negatively, there has been some sudden 'credible' terrorist threat somewhere in this country. How could the coincidence be so consistent?" Olbermann said that Rove's appearance before the Grand Jury was "bookended by two pieces of terror news: Before, came a Presidential speech on the war on terror; After, came a supposed threat to New York's subway system. Stop what you're thinking, it's just an amazing coincidence. Terrorists just happen to wait to make these threats until there's bad news about the administration that it needs to pre-empt. Just a coincidence!" He later commented on Bush's speech with: "Bush, returning to his theme of scaring the bejeezus out of anybody who will listen, offered what was called a 'major speech' on the war on terror" and later called it "terrorist chatter," saying Bush had "made many speeches like that before, the oratorical equivalent of 'Perhaps you didn't hear me the first time.'" An analyst on his program remarked that Bush "just turned up the volume on a broken record."
The Harriet Miers Supreme Court nomination (called by MSNBC "QuagMier" which I hope does catch on): Even the most rabid Republicans are backing away from Bush on this one, going so far as to appeal to Miers to turn down the nomination. (That way it wouldn't be that Bush made a colossal mistake so much as it would be Miers saying, "Thanks for the great honor, Mr. President, but I think I could be more valuable to you as your secretary and 'work-wife.'") Did you hear about her exchange with Patrick Leahy, the ranking Democrat on the Judiciary Committee? He asked her to name her favorite Supreme Court Justice, and she replied "Warren." After a pause, Leahy asked do you mean Earl Warren (a notably liberal judge), or maybe Warren Burger (a conservative who nevertheless voted for Roe v. Wade)? She replied she meant Warren Burger. Who died in 1995 when she was still on the Texas Lottery Commission or something, and hardly likely to be on first-name terms with... Yeesh. Leahy should have just said "Warren who?" and watched her squirm trying to think of a name. These hearings should be fun!
The anti-torture amendment in the Senate yesterday: John McCain attached this amendment to the troop-funding bill (over Dick Cheney's protests), and it was passed overwhelmingly anyway, 90-9, a vote which obviously had the support of a lot of formerly-loyal Republicans. Now Bush says he will veto it! Yes, Bush is now on record as being AGAINST funding the troops, and IN FAVOR OF torturing prisoners. Good luck with that one, Scotty! (By the way, the Senate can override Bush's veto with a two-thirds majority vote, and they almost certainly will.)
Bush and God: A BBC television show is quoting Bush as saying that God told him to invade Iraq. The show doesn't air until next week, but the White House is already taking pains to deny the quote, in advance. A touchy issue in the Arab world: When Arabs claim to be inspired by God they are called terrorists, but when Bush says the same thing it is a holy cause. Karen Hughes, the soccer-mom that Bush appointed diplomat to the middle east, was asked by an Egyptian politician last week why Bush mentions God so frequently in his speeches; and she said, well, "our Constitution cites 'one nation, under God.'" The Egyptian said, "Well, never mind" -- politely changing the subject because he knew, as Hughes obviously didn't, that the American Constitution says no such thing.
A spy in the Vice President's office: The spin they've been putting on this is -- you guessed it! -- it's the Democrats' fault. The guy was hired when Al Gore had the office.... Interesting that he was arrested over a month ago, but it was only announced on the very day indictments were expected from the CIA Leak grand jury, in an obvious attempt to distract the news media's attention.
The continuing Hurricane Katrina response: Members of both parties in the Senate are now sharply questioning (finally) where all the money has gone, in light of the fact that there are still people who haven't received the help they need. Just this morning on the news was a woman who is living with her family in the shell of their home, still filthy and infested with mold. She has a two-year-old daughter with a heart condition that requires her to be in very clean surroundings (so the daughter is living with relatives for now). FEMA did deliver to her a brand-new trailer ten days ago, which is parked in her yard. Unfortunately, they didn't give her the keys... She has called over and over, every day, and finally in desperation called a CNN reporter who, within hours, got her the keys.
New polls: Bush's numbers are dropping faster than Michael Jackson's record sales. A CBS poll yesterday, after Bush's "major speech" on terror, put his approval rating at a new low: 37%. In the same poll, 69% said they thought the country was headed in the wrong direction, which is the highest that number has been since CBS started asking that question (in 1983). Also -- I think these are Wall Street Journal numbers, I forget -- the Democratic candidates are polling ahead of Republicans in almost every Senate seat open in 2006. That election is still thirteen months away, but still....
Sorry sorry sorry for the long long post, but yesterday was a big big day!

I kept having a feeling that yesterdays date was important too. Finally realized what it was last night, but I think it was 13 years, just before Erika was born. Chilly (almost cold) here today, I think our high was about 45 and windy. I actually enjoyed it. Finally beginning to get some fall weather. Erika marches in the parade tomorrow. I think Brent will try to get a few pictures. They march right in front of his office, so he may get them from there. Then tomorrow night she plays at the game, she will need to bundle up. Supposed to get to 25 tonight. Brent brought a few plants in last night and will need to bring in the rest tonight. Oh, we got DSL this week. So much faster, but it confuses Emily when the phone rings while she is on the internet :)

Well, no further indictments today -- delayed because of some last-minute testimony by Karl Rove. Maybe trying to cut a deal...? We will know soon. So nice to see these two criminals (Rove and Tom DeLay) in trouble at last in their two separate cases. Some great articles by Doug Thompson of Capitol Hill Blue if you have time to read them: "Rats Jumping off a Sinking Ship Called Bush,""A Cardboard Cowboy," and "A Sick, Dying Elephant." The tide is turning, at long last. Just today there was an interesting vote in the Senate. John McCain authored a bill requiring humane treatment of prisoners of war -- which is to say, no more Abu Ghraib-like torture by U.S. troops allowed. Well, Dick Cheney didn't like that -- thus going on record as being openly pro-torture -- and vowed to block it. But when the Senate voted on it, it passed 90-9. Meaning Democrats and Republicans were united against it, and against the White House. That hasn't happened in a long long time. And the Repubs are fixin' to turn on Bush over his Supreme Court choice, too; even his old pals are shocked that he would pick his "work wife" to be a Supreme Court Justice. Must suck to be a Republican right now. :-)
Beautiful fall day here today, and yesterday too. Anyone who drives through the campus right now would see all the Homecoming displays being worked on. Now that feels like fall!

You know I hadn't paid attention to the date until this afternoon when someone mentioned it and I realized this is the anniversary of Dad's death--fourteen years ago today, right? Boy, it doesn't seem like it could be that long ago.
Gary
10/5/05
Cool, Emily, that you are next in line for Mayor! :-) There's a rumor going around in my subversive Democrat circles that as many as 12 more indictments could be handed down tomorrow to people implicated in "Plame-gate" (the CIA agent whose name was maliciously leaked by Karl Rove) -- so, if that happens, and they all get jailed/impeached/whatever, that moves you 12 steps closer to the Presidency! Are you ready to take over?
Emily
10/5/05
Hey everybody! Today was a fun day, I love spirit days!! I think I was lookin pretty wacky today, I am hoping I win again this year! I will know tomorrow, so I will be sure to keep you all posted. I even got called out of class to get my picture taken for the yearbook for "wacky day"! Tomorrow is class color day. Juniors are lime green and orange, so once again thanks to old dance costumes, I have got a pretty good outfit all planned out!
So, other than all of that fun stuff going on with school, not a whole lot intresting going on with me. I did have a Mayor's Youth Executive meeting on Monday night. Our regular mayor was gone, so since I am next in command I got to be the mayor, so that was fun!

I remember that cookbook too. I think we all had at least one birthday cake made from it. Cool day here, had heavy, heavy rains last night. Emily and I got caught in the rain and were soaked before we made it to the car.
Grandma
10/5/05
Yes, Gary, that book is really familiar, it was free with "Baker's Coconut" and had a different cut up cake for each month of the year, I made lots of Birthday cakes from there, as well as Ruth Taylor who made one for each one of you guys and brought them over on your birthdays. I think one of them was a little train. Maybe it is still in a drawer someplace, or maybe not [the book].
Emily and Erika, you look like you are going Halloweening instead of school, bet it was a fun day. It is a cool day here, Marsha, is it still raining there? I hope you didn't get the 10 inches, that would make the river rise, especially with all the recent rain you've had.
Sean, you just keep coming up with new ideas, is there no end to your talent?
Donna
10/5/05
I remember that cookbook or at least thought some of the pages looked familiar. They may look a little cheesy now but I remember thinking then that those cakes were so neat.
E&E, you guys look hilarious! I hope you have a fun day today.
Erika, do you think your teacher will come back to school? I hope we'll get to see pictures of you marching Friday. That is really cool!
Gary
10/5/05
Attention Mom: Does today's cool site look familiar to you? Or to Marsha, Paul, and perhaps Donna and Karen? It does to me, because I think you used to have this particular item. I remember looking through this book when I was a kid, and I remember that you made several cakes from it. I'm pretty sure you made the Dandy-Lion cake for my birthday. Ring any bells...?

Donna my teacher was late 30ish I think, and all the school told us was she was sick and in the hospital and having the surgery we found out all the details in the newspaper.
Lindsey

Wow Sean, you've been busy! Dad told me about your paper that you have to give about something about you and your welding mask, sounds cool.
Donna
10/4/05
Erika, how old is your teacher? I don't know why but that sounds like something out of The Simpson's. You guys were given too much information about her health. I had a teacher that had a nervous breakdown because the students were so mean to him. I wasn't mean of course, but others were and he just couldn't take it. But it was middle school and middle school kids are meaner than grade school kids--they're even meaner than high school kids, I don't know why, but they are.
Donna

Hi Everybody Today at school is twin day for school spirt day So i'm dressing up like some of my friends tomorrow is wacky wendsday I'm going to wear parts of old dance costumes. At school I've had a sub for a long time at school because my teacher Mrs. Yeager is in the hospital because she had a flu and got some medicane for it but killed the good bacteria in her colon and the bad bacteria made it basiclly explode so she went to the hospital and had surgery and her foot didn't get enough surclation and her foot got amputated and during the surgery she had two strokes. On Fri. I march in West homecoming then watch the game with my friends!!!

Hey, here's the answer to that paragraph puzzle below. The most common letter in theEnglish language is "E" -- and if you go back and re-read the paragraph you will see that "e" doesn't occur even once. That's it! And if you think that's no big deal, try taking one of your previous posts on this page and re-writing it so it contains no "e" anywhere. Not so easy!
There is an amazing novel called "Gadsby" (by Ernest Vincent Wright) that -- even though it is something like 50,000 words long -- does not contain one "E" anywhere. Check it out!
Lindsey
10/2/05
Well, pretty good Husker game yesterday. They looked a lot better and Taylor even broke a school record for passing yards, by a lot actually. Double overtime and Ross scored both touchdowns. Pretty exciting game to watch!
I agree, Lindsey, that was a great game and lots of fun to watch. They looked like a completely different team from two weeks ago. How?? Anyway, like you said, it was exciting! --Gary

Erika, you're becoming the Mother Teresa of the kitty world -- getting up out of your own sickbed to make sure the cats were warm. :-)
I guess the paragraph thing is kind of hard. I didn't mean for anyone to blow any brain-cells over it! So here's a hint: It has nothing to do with numbers. You might be able to find the answer in a shop or a mall, but not in a department store; you could buy the answer on amazon.com, but not on eBay; you might find it in a cupboard, but not in the refrigerator....
Emily
10/1/05
Yeah, Gary, that was a pretty interesting case I had last week. But, it actually turned out all right for me, one of the kids could kind of speak English. I'm just hoping its better next time!
Not a whole lot going on with us this weekend. Dad and I were planning on going up to Wausa tomorrow, but we have both caught Erika's cold. So, we won't be going anywhere this weekend.
So, did anyone figure out what was ususual about the paragraph Gary put up?? We sure couldn't!
Its starting to feel like fall around here too. Its pretty nice today in the upper 70s. But all last week we were in the 60s for the most part, we actually had a little bit of frost in some areas on Friday. We went outside that morning and the kittens were shivering, so Erika has been looking for some old blankets to put in the condo for them.
Congrats to Ryan on your Award! & Hope Sam is feeling better!
