Geez, Brent I hope you feel better soon! That sounds lousy.
I like Amanda's idea of who sang that. That could be fun.

BTW, Cute pictures of the girls!

Gary

Okay, I'm getting on the plane first thing in the morning, so no more updates here until I get back -- Wednesday night. Feel free to send stuff, of course, but it won't get posted until I get back. Don't forget to do your "Who Said That" answers! So far only one ballot received, from the team of Paul & Lindsey. All I will say (without giving anything away) is that they did not get a perfect score. See you in four days!

Brent seems to be feeling better. Had to have some more x-rays and they looked good. No tears in the colon (which would have meant surgery), just lots of air from yesterday. He got a tray for lunch and was happy to get it -- broth, tea, 7-up and of course jello. Still no idea when he will be able to come home...
Amanda
2/26/05
Last night was a Girl Scout Me & My Guy Sock Hop. Teghan came too, since she had the outfit already! We got professional pictures of Ryan with the girls on the motorcycle, so when those come in I will scan them and send them on. For now, these are pictures Ryan & I took...
Paul & Lori

Hope you are feeling better Brent.

Or, a Who Sang That? game.

Well Brent is back in the hospital. He had his "procedure" yesterday at 8. Got home about 10, very uncomfortable. By 4 it was getting worse, so we called the dr. He gave him a few suggestions and it seemed to be helping. He tried to sleep on the couch, but about midnight he was throwing up. That continuted for two hours until we called the dr again. This time he said to go to ER. We got right there and he was really suffering. Finally got him admitted and got some meds in him and it began to help. It's now 5:30 and I just got back. The sent him to a room and he will probably be there a day or two. I am about to head back and try to catch the dr. I'll keep you posted.....

What a lousy night you guys had, especially Brent. Feel better soon! --Gary

Amanda

I totally agree about the skill level needed for this Who Said That? game. I have some ideas for future games. How about soundbites picked by a family member, each time featuring someone new. And soundbites from movies straight off of our review page.

Sounds interesting! I like the reviews-page idea especially; I will do one of these soon. Also, Lindsey and Paul sent me an idea for a game last night that could be really fun. More on this later. Stay tuned! And Ok, if you're having trouble with this game, here's a tip: I pointed out that the first twenty sounds were all Best Picture winners, so instead of thousands of movies the field is already narrowed to only 77! Then all you need is a list and start matching... --Gary

Lindsey
2/25/05
Oh my god, I don't think I'm going to do the sound bytes this time, I think I only knew about 7 of them! This is by far the hardest one yet.

These are all great movies, Lindsey, so after I post the answers, go out and rent all the ones you didn't know. You'll thank me! :-) --Gary

Olivia
2/25/05
Donna, I got you the Dodo Pen from school! Cute puppy guys!
Lindsey
2/25/05
Cute puppy, can't wait to see him in person sometime. Do you think it will be a dog you will bring when you visit or will he stay with Sasha? Zoe looked a little jealous in one picture. Your TV looks good too!
Gary
2/25/05
Hey, when's the last time you checked the projects page?? New stuff!
Karen
2/25/05
Cute puppy. I didn't know that you were thinking of getting another dog. What did you name him? Brent is back from his morning of torture. Dr said everything looked OK, will check in later with some test results.

Lindsey, if you had TiVo you would never miss an American Idol!!! Gary, we f-fwd through a lot too. Monday night, it was the boys night where EVERY song was a SLOW BORING BALLAD our f-fwd on TiVo got a work-out!

Amen. TiVo rules! --Gary

Lindsey
2/24/05
Geez do Emily and Erika ever go to school!! I haven't watched American Idol alot because I have dance when it's on but I have tried to watch some and tape some. I liked Judd, he should have stayed. I do like Mikayla though. My favorite part of the show is probably the beginning auditions!

Sounds like Lindsey's jealous of the SC school schedule. I am too! :-) --Gary

Emily
2/24/05
We have been watching American Idol too. I got Mom and Erika hooked on it. I was sad to see Judd go last night too, I thought he would have gotten more votes than that. I don't like Mikayla so much, but we do like Nadia.

Erika wasn't too happy about having to go all day today, but then she had ALL last week off. I'm not sure why we have been having so many early outs lately, but we have been enjoying them!

Gary
2/24/05
Yeah, I'm an Idol junkie again... But I record it and then play it back later so I can fast-forward through the ungodly amount of commercials and fillers. You'd be surprised what a time-saver that is! I haven't gotten attached to any performer yet, really, but I was mildly surprised to see Sarah Mather go last night. Her previous performance was a wee bit weak, but I thought she'd be around a little longer. They're all pretty good this year, actually; remember last year? Pencil-Boy hanging on week after week, doing his horrible, horrible dancing...?

Enjoy your day off, Emily! :-) (Is Erika bummed having to go the whole day??)

Amanda
2/24/05
Anyone watching American Idol again this season? We are... Like we have the time for 3 nights a week! But we are... Last night we were sad to see Judd go. He was good. Maybe not to go all the way, but further than last night.. Ryan doesn't like Mikayla, but Tristen & I do...
Karen
2/24/05
No school for Emily today. They get out at 12:30 again today, so I let her take the whole day off. I have a short week too. Had Monday off for President's Day, and I am taking tomorrow off. Brent has to go to the hospital tomorrow. He has some scar tissue building up and needs to get that taken care of (I won't fill in the details, because they are gross). So anyway he will be in the hospital most of the morning, then home to crash for the rest of the day. We got just a dusting of snow last night, and now it's a bit colder and windy.
Emily
2/23/05
Hey everybody! Erika and I got out at noon again today for some teacher meeting or something, and I don't have school tomorrow, but we still have dance today and tomorrow.
We gave our presentation to the school board yesterday, it went well, and I think we should be done with that now.
We got our Oscar stuff today and we are looking forward to that!

Way to go on the keg registration, Emily--sounds important! Glad you got the Oscar scoresheets. Check back on Friday for a special "Oscar Edition" of "Who Said That?" --Gary

Karen
2/22/05
Teghan, I hope you can hear better now :) Emily and I just got back from the school board meeting. She gave another presentation to the board members about keg registration. She did a great job and got their full support.
Lindsey
2/22/05
Teghan (if you can hear me) don't do that again!! I'm glad you're a "normal" 3 year old. Geez, nailpolish, beads, what next kid??
Paul
2/22/05
TEEG, What were you thinking?? You can't put beads in your ears. Maybe beans. You must have been a good girl to lie there and have the doctor clean your ears. But, I think you are much much, more than a normal three year old.
Donna
2/22/05
Amanda, you should put the bead on a chain and she could wear it--kinda like a medal or something. ;-) Good news that she's a normal 3 year old.
Amanda
2/22/05
So, Teghan had her 3 year well baby exam today. Everything looked good, the doctor said she is a normal 3 year old. He checked the eyes, nose, mouth & ears, etc. When he was checking her ears he said her right ear was pretty backed up and that we should take her to the audiology clinic & have them use their big microscope deal to get out the wax build up because it was deeper than he wanted to reach. So we took her and they laid her on this bed & had this massive thing look in her ear & they even had a camera to show us inside it. He picked & picked & couldn't get a whole lot out. Then he used a mini vaccuum for ears & still couldn't get it out. He started wondering why it was so stubborn. Then he got a different, more intrusive tool & it finally came out. It was actually a bead, with quite a bit of wax covering it. It had been there awhile...GROSS! Sorry if you were eating. That child never ceases to amaze us.
Gary
2/21/05
The votes are in! And if we were all Academy members, the Oscars would go to:

BEST PICTURE: The Aviator
BEST DIRECTOR: Clint Eastwood
BEST ACTOR: Jamie Foxx
BEST ACTRESS: Hilary Swank
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR: Morgan Freeman
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS: Cate Blanchett

I'll be mailing out the complete list so you can keep score on Oscar night; but in the meantime, here's the complete list. Once again, good luck everybody!

Donna
2/21/05
No snow in Omaha yet. I hope we don't get any. I thought it was just supposed to be this morning so maybe we lucked out.
My bus broke down on the way to work, we had to wait for the second bus to pick us up. But we were only a half hour late so it wasn't too bad. And I'm glad it was their bus and not my car.
Gary, did you get my Oscar picks? I sent them in yesterday around 6:00.

Yup, got 'em. I'm making the "master list" right now, which I will post here soon and also mail out paper copies to everyone. Should be an interesting race again this year! --Gary

Karen
2/21/05
We are all home today. Everyone got the day off for President's Day. So nice to have a lazy day. Snow started about 8 with big fluffy flakes, we have about 2 inches. Gary when do you leave for your trip?

I leave early Sunday morning (27th), and back Wednesday night (2nd). No snow here, and I'm at work today. Lucky you! :-) --Gary

Gary
2/21/05
OK, here's installment #81 in my ongoing "I Hate Blockbuster" series: You all know about their new "no late fees" policy, if you watch TV at all. Their commercials show big banners and have voice-overs saying "No Late Fees--Ever," while people sob and cheer. So I tried it out. I checked out a movie (that would have been due by Sunday night) and asked the guy how the no-late-fee thing works. He said, "Well, we'd still like it back by Sunday night; but if you find you need to keep it til, oh, Monday morning or Monday afternoon... or even if you need it another day, or two... We just trust you to bring it back." He got very solemn and said, "It won't work without trust." Well, what he didn't mention, and what the commercials aren't mentioning, is the fine print: What the deal really is is a 7-day grace period. If you keep the movie past seven days, the entire purchase price of the movie is charged to your card. (In Blockbuster's language, "the rental is converted to a sale.") At that point, you have 30 days in which you may "return" it and have the amount (minus a "re-stocking fee") credited back to your card. This is such a shady deal that the Attorney General of New Jersey is suing Blockbuster for "violating state consumer fraud laws." Once again, Blockbuster's right-wing "Christian" ownership shows its true colors. Go Netflix!!

Way to go on your dance competition, Lindsey, and on the "Who Said That" competition! Tristen placed second and Olivia placed third, followed by Emily, Paul, Erika, Karen, and Donna. Thanks for playing, everybody, and I will have another one up next week.
Lindsey
2/20/05
I just got back from my dance competition in Omaha and it's 10:30 so I am pretty tired but just wanted to say we got Elite Silver for Lyrical and Gold for our Jazz. Ok I'm going to bed.

Wow I'm surprised I got that many right on the Who Said That. Also good job Tristen, you got ALOT of them right.

Lindsey
2/20/05
Hey everybody! Today I have a dance competition in Omaha at the Civic Auditorium Music Hall. I also have one in March coming up in Omaha and then we have one April that's in Kansas City so that should be fun to go down there. Then we have one in May somewhere and possibly one in June so every month we have at least one. Hey Gary what do you the next "Who Said That" will be about?

I'm going to be in Arizona for three or four days at the end of the month, so I think the next "who said that" will go up then so you can play it over those days. And because that is Oscar week-end, I'm going to try to do one where the sound-bytes are all from Oscar-winning movies. And don't forget to check back tomorrow for the interesting results of our current game! --Gary

Gary
2/19/05
Last chance to win the Oscar...! I've received ballots from everyone except Donna, Lori, Sean, Teghan(?) and Zachary, so if you procrastinators want a chance at the gold (which is to say, gold-painted plastic) you've got to get your Oscar ballots in tomorrow (Sunday)! I'll put together the scoresheets and mail them out on Monday. Good luck, everybody!
Tristen

THANKYOU EVERYBODY FOR BUYING GIRL SCOUT COOKIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Olivia
2/19/05
Hey Everyone, I went to a basketball clinic a few weeks ago and I got to meet, play with, and learn some drills from the girls on the Nebraska basketball team! I had lots of fun, and people that had an X on their hand got a free t-shirt and a free green gatorade. But people that had an O on their (which was me) hand just got a free gatorade. They only allowed 150 girls go in and if there was more than 150, they just couldn't go at all. I also got a poster that had the Nebraska players on it and they all sighned it. I also got the Weslyn players on a different poster of them too. Finally I got a few Nebraska basketball players to sign my basketball too. My team has not lost a basketball game since I got it signed. Well I gotta go because I've got a basketball game and a sleepover in one day!
Lindsey
2/18/05
We got out of school today early because East is hosting the Speech and Debate Tournament and they need the space so I got out at 1:45 today!
Emily
2/18/05
Hey everybody! Erika and I got out at noon today for a teacher inservice thing, so that was nice. I am glad it is finally Friday! We will have a pretty easy week next week. None of us have school Monday and we have an early out Wednesday, and I also have an early out Thursay, so that should be good.
My Teen Court session was cancelled for Tuesday, so I will be able to give our presentation to the School Board that day with 2 other people for Mayors Youth Commission, so hopefully that will go well too.
Lindsey
2/17/05
Tristen that's so cool you have the most badges. You're gunna need a bigger vest though if you get anymore! I remember helping taking those off your old vest!
Tristen
2/17/05
Yes, they are all Girl Scout badges. If I do something or go somewhere I get one. I have gone to some places to visit and bought them. Cabela's and Ft. Worth Zoo. I have the most in my troop.

Thanks for answering. Way to go on all the badges! --Gary

Lindsey
2/17/05
I did the cartoon one and that was hard. A lot of mine were guesses. Weather is nice here today.
Emily
2/17/05
Well, I just sent in my "Who Said That" guesses. I was a lot easier than I thought it would be, but I'm sure I still missed a lot of them!
Emily
2/17/05
Lindsey, we have to have 2 years of a foreign language to graduate and for most colleges too. But I am in Spanish 2 now, so I will have all the credits I need for that.
Donna, Language Comp. is a college prep english class. Its just a lot of reading novels and writing papers.
Gary
2/17/05
Hey Tristen, could you answer me a question (when you get home from school)? What's the story on this vest you are wearing? Are those all Girl Scout merit badges? I thought I saw one from Cabela's in there... Help me out!! :-)
Amanda
2/17/05
Faith Mission is the city mission in Wichita Falls, it's like the homeless shelter/soup kitchen/aid center here. It's a good cause, better than the retirement home we did last year, I think.
Donna
2/17/05
I did the sound game too and it was hard. I think I did well on my guesses but I left over half of them blank.

Emily, what's Language Comp.?

Donna
2/17/05
Amanda, what's Faith Mission--the place we can donate GS cookies if we want to?
Karen
2/17/05
Geez, just got done doing the cartoon game. I did lousy!! Didn't know half of them -- it was hard!! I want the old movies back next time :) Not much going on in SC. Looking forward to a long week-end, we all get Monday off for Presidents Day.
Lindsey
2/16/05
Emily, you're not taking a language like Spanish or French? We have to have that to graduate and to get into college.
Gary
2/16/05
Emily and Lindsey, just reading your schedules is making me dizzy! I gotta lie down.....
Emily
2/16/05
Hey everybody! Well, we registered for next years classes a few weeks ago, and we got our final schedules back today. First semester I have:
1. Art Appreciation
2. Chemistry
3. Algebra 2
4. Trig
5. Economics
6. Debate
7. Language Comp.

Second Semester:
1. Business and Personal Law
2. Chemistry
3. Algebra 2
4. Psychology
5. American Government
6. Advanced Speech
7. Humanities

But, I also signed up for an accelerated summer school progam to take Algebra 2. So, if that works out I will be taking Trig first semester and Advanced Mathematical Concepts second semester in place of Algebra 2, and I will proably take the first semester of AP Biology, which is Intro to College Biology, in place of Trig. So I hope that works out, so that I will be able to take Calculus the next year, because I can get college credits for that. But next year I will also get some college credits for Art Appreciation and Humanities. So, that will be good.
Well, I should go get ready for dance now.
Congrats to Amanda & Lindsey on making Honor Roll!

Gary
2/16/05
Apologies for the delay in posting the results of the previous "who said that" game. Here they are: The winner was Paul with a perfect score! Close behind was Karen, who got 19 right and missed only one (Chris Farley -- you guys need to get into "Tommy Boy"!). Amanda and Emily got 15 right, and Erika, Grandma, and Lindsey each got 14 right. Olivia got nine right -- but pointed out that she nailed the "Scooby-Doo" sound-byte in less than two seconds, which I am sure is a record. Way to go, everyone!

A new "who said that" starts tomorrow, and this one should be more fun for the younger crowd. All of the sound-bytes -- from both TV and movies -- are from the past 10 years: nothing older! So tune in tomorrow.

A few more Oscar ballots have come in, so the only hold-outs are Amanda, Brent, Donna, Lori, Marsha, Ryan, Sean, Teghan(?), Tristen, and Zachary. Please get 'em in by Sunday night if you want a chance to get the Oscar statuette away from Lindsey (or Donna...?)

Donna
2/16/05
Today's website is really cool!

I agree! And it's something that could only happen on the internet. No other medium could do the same thing, not even television. --Gary

Donna
2/16/05
Linz, I heard you made honor roll! So why hasn't this been mentioned on the newsletter? Congratulations!

Amanda, I'm surprised that your mayor gave a smaller contribution than I did.

See below! Your notes came in late last night and early this morning, respectively, and were posted here at the same time. And speaking of honor rolls (congrats, Lindsey!), Amanda sent in a scan of a newspaper clipping a few days ago listing her name on the President's Honor Roll. Unfortunately, it's in a format I can't convert to an image for the webpage. Sorry about that. Anyway, congratulations to Amanda! --Gary

Lindsey
2/15/05
Congrats on the Phone-A-Thon. On Sunday, Lincoln had all the schools and the people made Honor Roll were printed in the paper and I made it for first semester! I'm pretty happy. Today my Dad had seen an ad in the paper for a car I might be getting. It was a '97 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo. We went out the people's house and I took it out and drove it. It was in great condition, 69,000 miles on it and really well kept but the color was kind of weird, kind of like a greenish silver, but we're supposed to hear from the lady tomorrow unless someone else bought it but we're still looking.
Amanda
2/15/05
THANKS TO EVERYONE FOR CONTRIBUTING TO MY PHONE-A-THON EFFORTS TONIGHT!!! In case you didn't hear, I had to volunteer tonight to call people to get them to give money to Girl Scouts, and I relied upon my lovely family to help out! I actually was the top pledge receiver tonight! I got a gift certificate for a CD! Woohoo! This was the last guy I called tonight, he contributed in the past, and tonight I had to call him to ask for his contribution this year. Today was his last day on "the job," so I felt a little weird calling to say the least. Needless to say, his wife answered, and they committed to the $200 they donated in previous years.
Ryan
2/15/05
Wow Linz, they sound like good classes. English was my weak point but its nice to see you getting into Advanced Algebra. Math and Music were my favorite subjects. I also loved chemistry. Oral Communications is a very important class to have. Good luck with that schedule.
Anna
2/15/05
It has been SO nice here. I think today it got up to 45 and I left to go outside to eat and it was so icy out and I almost fell like 5 times. It was funny to my friends but scary to me. I hope it stays like this. Now you can see most of peoples lawns and I hope NO MORE SNOW comes! Good job Tristen on your cookie sales!
Lindsey
2/15/05
Hey everyone. We registered for classes for next year today and here are the classes I signed up for. They aren't in order that I have them, but it's what I'll be taking.

1ST SEMESTER:
English 10 D w
Chemistry
World History
Advanced Algebra
Spanish Year 2
Oral Communications
Health/Rec Sports

2ND SEMESTER:
English 10 D w
Chemistry
World History
Advanced Algebra
Spanish Year 2
Economics
9/10 Weight Training (1st Qtr) Career Ed Planning (2nd Qtr)

The w by English means its a weighted class so instead of being graded on a 4.0 scale, it's a 5.0 scale. So it's a little harder class but if you would normally have like a C you would get a B for the class. So that's my classes next year as of now.

Gary
2/15/05
We got in a few more Oscar ballots over the weekend (thank you John and Anna!), but we're still waiting to hear from Amanda, Brent, Donna, Grandma, Lauren, Lori, Marsha, Ryan, Samantha, Sean, Teghan(?), Tristen, and Zachary. You've only got five more days to watch all 34 nominated films (plus 20 shorts and documentaries) as the rest of us have done, and then make out your ballot. That's around ten films a day, so some of you might have to take some time off work.... Good luck!
Amanda
2/14/05
Tristen has had a good cookie weekend. She went door to door on 3 streets over the weekend & sold 106 doing that. Then tonight she called in some orders from Grandpa & Grandma Anderson, Grandma Jo, Gary and her Metcalf Grandparents & just hit the next prize level, 150! She is riding high!
Amanda
2/14/05
Hey Iowan's: We got the box today, the girls loved it! Teghan has been playing with silly putty all night! Thanks!!!

Hey everyone! Yesterday my Mom and Dad went out to the Columbia University sale or something, I can't remember the name but they got a really nice Yamaha piano. It's soooo pretty. It think they said it was like 20 years old used by the University and they gave us a new bench and everything and it's in our basement. They delivered it today. I'll try to get pictures up of it!
Emily
2/13/05
Hey everybody! We haven't done much this weekend, but everyone around here is finally starting to feel better so thats good. Hopefully we will be at school and work tomorrow.
Its been pretty nice around here today, its in the 40s and has been raining since last night.
I just found out this morning that I and 3 other people are going to give our presentation at the school board meeting on the 22nd. But, I'm not sure if I will be able to make it, beacuse I am attorney for Teen Court that day. So, I will have to see what time it will be. But that would proably be fun to do, so we'll see what works out.
Anna, your dance sounds really cool. Glad to hear you had fun!
Anna
2/13/05
Hey everyone! Last night was my Sno-Ball Dance. I had So much fun. Yesterday before the dance I got my hair done and just got ready and took pictures. Then at about 4:30 I went over to my friend Jaymee's. Her mom and dad were drivng us there and my mom and picked us up. Only three of us went but we met a couple other people there. When we got to there we ate and then we went up to the dance. We were kinda early. So we got to look around and it was so nice. It was one big room but the way it was set up was kinda like 4 different rooms. So when you walked in there were couches and tables. Then in the back there were drinks and in the middle there was a fountain. Then the other room was the dance floor. Then the last room there were about 5 tables and thats where pictures were set up. But I took a lot of pictures and I got a big package of the ones I took at the dance. So it was a good night.
Lindsey
2/12/05
Tristen, how did your singing recital go? I want to hear about it. I can tell you did good though since you sang them all to me on the phone!!
Emily
2/11/05
Great pictures Tristen, I love girl scout cookies!! I'm sure we'll buy lots, hope you get to be top seller!
Emily

Yeah, we have been working on the Keg Registration bill for a little over a year now. It was tabled last year, so we're trying to get it through this year. My counselor at school is also our advisor for Legislative Committee on Mayors Youth Commission, and she asked me and another person on the Exec. Council to put together a presentation to give to the leadership team at school (the principals and like head directors of each department and some people from the board of education), beacuse she said we had such "wonderful speaking skills" from debate. We also gave the same presentation two other times on Monday to some other groups of people. We were doing it to get them to hopefully write some letters of support to some of the senators who have been holding up the bill.
But, anyway we were just talking about the trip we took to Des Moines last summer, for the Keg Registration training day. Then some other people from Mayors Youth Commission went to Des Moines again, a few weeks ago to present some of the work we had been doing on the bill. So, thats really all we were doing the presentation over -- not about a wild weekend in Des Moines Gary :)

Well, ya never know! --Gary

Gary
2/11/05
It's GIRL SCOUT COOKIE TIME!

Also, check these pix from Tx!

Karen
2/11/05
No, it is the KEG registration. They are trying to pass a law that anyone who buys a keg of beer has to register with the liquor store. Then if there is a problem the police can trace who is responsible for it.

Ah! From your first note I was picturing a wild weekend in Des Moines! --Gary

Gary
2/11/05
Karen, I am assuming you meant KEY registration for Emily's trip.... If it's actually KEG registration, you might want to ask a few questions. :-)

Feel better Erika! And Brent, and Emily! This thing really hangs on, but it will go away -- there's light at the end of the tunnel!

Oscar voters now include Emily, Erika, Gary, Karen, Lindsey, Olivia, and Paul. Livy sent in her ballot last night, and it looks (to me) pretty hard to beat! Good luck, Livy!

The "who said that?" quiz is picking up steam: We have now heard from Amanda, Emily, Erika, Karen, Lindsey, Paul, and Olivia, and I can tell you that there is at least one perfect score among them! If you weren't listed, get busy!

Karen
2/11/05
Still fighting the flu bug around here. Erika went back to school yesterday, came home very tired. So now she is taking today off. Brent is also home today, he seems to be getting it. Poor Emily has been dragging all week too, but had lots to do at school so she went in everyday. She even had to go in extra this week. Her counselor asked her talk with the teachers about her trip to Des Moines on the keg registration. Don't imagine we will be doing much at all this week-end (not that we had any plans anyway)......
Amanda
2/10/05
The girls will be VERY excited to get something in the mail. They got UPS Tuesday from Grandpa, Grandma, Lindsey & Olivia, then UPS Wednesday from Grandma Jo, Donna, Lindsey & Olivia. Today was a little bit of a let down. :)

Gary, nice looking web site. Fun to look around in it. Erika was back to school today, pretty tired, but made it through the day. She will be missing dance tonight. Tristen and Teghan -- watch for the mailman in the next couple of days -- Emily and Erika sent a box your way :) Time to make my guesses on the game (Hey Gary Erika was saying that most of the shows were before she was even born and that made it a lot harder for her, maybe next time it could be a cartoon or kid show? Just a thought)

How interesting that you would say that! :-) It just so happens that I have assembled another "who said that" -- this time all from cartoon shows, none of them earlier than 1995! I'll put it up next week. Erika, I'll bet you did better on the movies and TV ones than the old-timers will do with the cartoons! :-) Have fun! --Gary

Thanks for the kudos. I am so glad it's done. I've been fiddling with it for like three months or so. And of course, now that it's all done, I keep getting people coming up and saying, "Could we make the yellow just a wee bit more orange-y?" or something... :-)

Weird that you get asked to register on the Chicago Tribune site (for the news story I linked to below). I'm not registered there, and it opens right up for me...

Here's a quick re-cap: A family in Florida left their 7-year-old son's dog with a neighbor on New Years Eve, and unfortunately the dog jumped the fence. The 76-year-old neighbor felt sick about it, put up fliers, and went to the pound every day looking for the dog. No luck. Nobody had seen the dog. What they didn't know was that another family, visiting from Chicago, picked up the dog (it's a very friendly dog) thinking they could find the owners. The dog had tags, so the Chicago guy -- a lawyer -- called the number, which was to a veterinarian in Alaska. The Alaska vet said he would contact the owners, who had recently moved to Florida. But by the time he did so, the lawyer and family had returned to Chicago. With the dog. So the Florida guy called the lawyer in Chicago, left messages, but got no call-back for more than a week. At which time the lawyer said he no longer had the dog; had given it to a nun who ran an organization for handicapped kids. He refused to name the nun or the organization, and said he didn't want to bother her by going back and asking for the dog, etc. So the Florida guy says, OK, we'll get the police involved; and filed a report. He also wrote a letter to the Chicago guy's law firm, telling them how his little boy was in tears about this dog. A Chicago Tribune reporter heard the story and went to talk with the lawyer. The reporter said the lawyer gave him contradictory versions of his story, and still refused to name this mystery "nun." He said when the other lawyers in his firm read the letter, "they laughed at it." Meanwhile, the dog is "somewhere" in Chicago, and has been for 40+ days....

Nice looking site Gary, I went to the contact us to see your name in print there... I dont want to vote for Oscar, I think I have seen 2 movies all year! If only there was a textbook award show, I would have a chance at that one! I can't get to the Tribune article, gotta register, can you paste it here?
Gary

Hey, if you want to see the other website I run, check this out. We've been doing a lot of redesigning in the past few months, and our new look just went live this morning. What do you think?

QUESTION: What do Emily, Erika, Gary, Karen, Lindsey, and Paul have in common?
ANSWER: They're the only ones who have sent in their Oscar picks so far! The rest of you have a mere ten days to make up your minds; otherwise one of those lucky six will get the trophy this year!

Our other current game -- "Who Said That?" -- so far has entries from Amanda and Lindsey. C'mon folks, this one is much easier -- and the first one is a give-away! (Oh, and by the way, Amanda pointed out that #20 is actually from a movie. I misidentified it and thought it was from a TV show with the same character. So you get full credit for either the movie, the TV show, or the actor's name.... Sorry about that!)

And here's a news story that shows why people just loooove lawyers....

Today it was about 25 and it has been snowing all day here also. Not to much going on here. I have a late start tomorrow so that means I go to school 2 hours later and my classes are only 30 minutes! Im so happy!
Gary
2/9/05
I just put the finishing touches on the next "who said that" game, so check back tomorrow to play. (I'll leave it up all weekend as usual.) This one is all TV -- most from current shows, but a few from bygone programs. Good luck to all!
Gary

Cold here too, and I think we got about 5 inches of snow. It snowed literally all day yesterday, so I'm surprised it wasn't more. It should all disappear soon, though, when the temps go up into the 40s and 50s for the coming week.

By the way, the fact that last night was Mardi Gras, and today Ash Wednesday, totally escaped me this year! Otherwise I would have made up an appropriate front page. So Happy Mardi Gras (late), everyone!

Cold this morning!! We got about 3 inches of snow yesterday. Back to school for me today. Erika is still parked on the couch. Seems to be feeling much better today and hopefully back to school tomorrow.
Lindsey
2/8/05
Well just got home from school and it is snowing pretty good. You can't see very far in the distance. Yea tonight we rented Shark Tales (I think we are going to buy it though too) and we're just gonna watch that until I have to go to dance. It's really cold outside!
Grandma

Sorry that you are not feeling well, Erika, but it is a great day to stay inside. Hope you are better soon.

I had lots of days with earaches when I was little and they are not fun!! Lots of flu, sore throats, etc. I hope ALL of you are getting better. Anna, I think you will be the "Belle of the Ball" at your dance, your dress sounds very grown up. Snowing since at least noon and coming down thick right now. Piling up higher on the deck rails. Should be outta here tomorrow tho' at least til Saturday! Have to put another log on the fire. Great B.B. game, Livy!
Gary
2/8/05
Snowing here too (see webcams), right on schedule as predicted. Supposed to snow all afternoon and evening, though it's pretty light and shouldn't accumulate, knock wood. But it's enough to keep me inside: I usually drive home for lunch, but not today! I'm staying in my office and will find something to eat around here.
Karen
2/8/05
Well, just back from the doctor (after 2 hours). She does NOT have strep or the flu. She does have an ear infection. Got lots of drugs and another day off of school! Cold today, only 15 now and just starting to snow, good day to curl up on the couch, watch Shark Tales and build a fire......
Donna
2/8/05
Erika, I'm sorry to hear you're not feeling well. Get better soon!!!

Gary
2/8/05
Wow, sorry about today's cool site. It was working fine a few days ago, but I tried it just now and got an error screen saying the site had been suspended. Don't know why! FYI, it was called "The Compleat Steve" and it was dedicated to anyone and everyone named Steve. Kinda funny.

The crawl for today is very appropiate for us. Erika is home sick again today and we are heading to the doctors office in about an hour. So I also am taking the day off. Started out as just not feeling well on Sunday, then a sore throat, now it's hurting her ear.

Today's crawl, for those that may not see it, is: "AMAZING FACT: What's the #1 thing that sends people to their doctors? Sore throat. #2 is back pain."

Feel better, Erika! --Gary

I had some help from Ryan with the movies. I wouldn't have gotten Young Frankenstein or Airplane! I'm looking forward to the TV one this weekend... Tristen has a program at the highschool tonight. She is rather excited. She has been planning her outfit for 2 weeks. Remember, cookies start Friday!
Karen
2/7/05
Wow, I won again!! Again about 2 were complete guesses. I kept replaying the Moonstruck one, I knew I had heard it, but couldn't think where. Spent the rest of the day thinking of it and it finally hit me. Guess this proves that I spend way too much time watching movies and TV.

Time well spent, in my humble opinion! :-) --Gary

Karen
2/7/05
Anna, you have been busy!! Tristen's illness seems to have hitten us. Erika is home sick today, and Emily really should have stayed home too, but she went in. We got about 2 inches of snow yesterday and now it's a lot colder!
Gary
2/7/05
Congrats to Karen for recognizing 90% of the movie clips from the latest "who said that?" I may be able to put together another one for this coming weekend; as a change of pace, it will be all TV clips.
Anna
2/5/05
Hey everybody! I have been really busy lately. I had testing all last week and this week for the MBST but I had to only test last week for the writing test. On the 12th I have a dance for my school and it is formal so I have been really busy trying to get all my stuff ready. I had finals a couple weeks ago and then before you know it I will be starting track again this year. So I have a full schedule. And those pictures were really cute!
Karen

Teghan, I love your Lion:) Tristen, you look like you are feeling better.
Amanda
2/5/05
Hey, today we went with our girl scout troop to Paws n Claws, which is a bear factory here in town. We took the Girl Scout Troop, and Teghan went too. Thought you might enjoy these pictures.... Teghan picked hers all out by herself, the lion & the wedding outfit, and the name, Isabella.
Lindsey
2/4/05
I'm home sick again today. Still not feeling 100% better. Last night though we watched "Ray." What a great movie! I really really liked it. So I've seen at least one of the movies nominated for Best Picture! Tristen, how are you feeling today?
Donna
2/4/05
Bush is here alright. I can see the Quest Center from my window. He should be halfway through his speech by now. The helicopters have been circling overhead and the police are driving up and down the street between Gallup and Quest. I heard he stayed at the Presidential suite at the Hilton last night at a cost of $1000. The total cost to Omaha for his visit is $70,000. Gallup was given around 100 tickets and sadly there were some very excited people here. They had to be at Quest by 5:30 this morning. There are a lot of streets closed in the area too, but fortunately none that I need to drive on to get to work.
Donna

Get better soon Tristen and Lindz!!!
Gary
2/4/05
As I said, I'll leave the "who said that?" page up over the weekend if anyone else wants to try it. So far we've heard from Emily, Erika, Grandma, Karen, Lindsey, and Ryan. All I will say is, so far no one has turned in a perfect score -- so you can still win!

So what's in the news? Here in Lincoln, the only thing the local news is talking about is that the Commander-in-Thief is speaking in Omaha today. It must be kind of nostalgic for him, going back to where he hid out on 9/11. Ah, memories! In the meantime, our Republican masters are doing a good job training the next generation of voters not to question their government. Check this out.

And remember when having a prison record made it harder to get a job? That's not how it works for the rich and famous! :-)

Lindsey

I agree, I think the Who Said That? is harder this time. I think I missed 9 probably. I kind of liked the first time how some were TV Shows and some were Movies. Maybe next time though we could try just TV Shows or something.

I do have a bunch of TV show sounds coming up for next time. Another thing we can do is TV Theme Songs, or (though this would be harder) Movie Theme Songs. --Gary

BIG T, Hope you are feeling better, Do you think you might have to get your tonsils out, well, if it will make you feel better, I remember when your mom had to do that with the tubes in her ears.Well just take it easy and enjoy that new TV. OK. Teeg, what up!!
Emily
2/3/05
I just sent in my "Who said That" guesses. I thought it was easier than last time too, but I still don't think I did very well!!

Hey, you got the sound working! Good! --Gary

Karen
2/3/05
Tristen, I hope you are better soon :)

When do you have to go the other doctor? I remember when your Mom had to have her tonsils out. How is Teghan feeling? It's so nice here today, up to 62. All of the snow is melted, doesn't even feel like winter.
Lindsey
2/3/05
Geez Tristen, hope you start feeling better.

I actually stayed home today too. My stomach didn't feel good all last night and I kept waking up and haven't been feeling any better all day! I probably won't go to dance tonight then. Alright well talk to everyone later!

You get better, too, Lindsey!

(Boy, this flower is getting a workout today!) --Gary

Feel Better Tristen!!!

Hope your tonsils don't have to come out. :(
Amanda

We just got back from the doctor. It is strep again! We got a referral to go to an Ear, Nose & Throat specialist to talk about taking out tonsils....
Emily
2/3/05
Hey everybody! Erika and I got out at noon today for a teacher inservice, so that was nice but we proably won't do much.
I wouldn't know if the "Who said that" is harder or not, beacuse something isn't working with the sound on our computer. So, hopefully we will get it figured out tonight.

Feel Better Tristen!!
Yeah, I think that whole cold/flu/throat thing is going around now.
I still have a bad cold and a sore throat, and alot of people at school and dance and stuff have been sick too.

Hope you get the sound thing worked out! Does your computer play sounds when you're not online, like in a game? If so, you could just save the sound files to your hard drive and play them offline. (Though of course it would be better to get the online sound thing working...)

And hey, feel better yourself! :-) --Gary

I agree about TiVo. I've had a DV-R (digital video recorder), supplied by the cable company, for a couple of months now, and it has changed my TV-viewing life. This one doesn't have quite as many bells and whistles as TiVo, but it's close. Way cool!

I got my tax return (state, anyway -- still waiting for Fed) in record time this year: I filed online, and three days later the check was in my mailbox. Couldn't believe it!

I would have thought this "who said that" was easier! But then again, I don't get to hear the sound-byte on its own -- I always know who it is before I hear it...

Feel better, Tristen!!

We are here, and doing well. We have had a friend in town for a week and a half. Mike Matusik (of Amber & Mike, the friends we lived near at Offutt, and Amber, my best friend) was here from Washington because he had to go through some training here at Sheppard. Amber & Peyton couldn't come because it was too short of notice & the flight was way too much. Last night was his last night here, we will miss him, but we will be glad to get some time back to ourselves. Every off minute we had from work & school was with him. Ryan loved it. We are getting ready for cookies and trying to adjust to school. Cookies start Friday February 11th. We got our tax returns back already, took just 10 days. We have had fun with it too. We got a big screen TV!! It's a 51 inch. We bought it this weekend, but it just came in last night. We got TiVo for free, and let me tell you, TiVo rocks!! It's so cool! Pause live TV when the phone rings or a child needs something, rewind it when you missed something. SO much easier to use to record something, just type in AME in the title search & it will find American Idol, and record it for you when it is on! Sweet. It even has an option to hook it up to your home network & then if you remember at work that you want to watch something, get onto your network & tell TiVo to record it! Sweet... The record function on it is so easy, it made me think that grandma would like it. We got that Saturday because it was in stock, so we have had lots of time to play with it. We got a few other big things that we have needed/wanted. Its been fun. We are living it up because hopefully next year I will have a W-2 of my own & we will be in a higher tax bracket & we may not enjoy such a large return. Tristen just woke up today with a sore throat & her lymph node is swollen. SO, looks like we may be missing school and taking a trip to the doctor. This Saturday we are taking the Girl Scout troop to Paws n Claws, which is a build a bear (knock off really, but it's a nice place) in Wichita Falls. The closest Build a Bear is in Dallas, 3 hours away. Tristen is very excited. We are taking Teghan too. So, I think that is our life in a nutshell. OH, this Who Said That? is harder!!

I didn't even realize it was Groundhog Day today! It was pretty foggy here this morning too. But, it is really warm now, about 50s.
So far this week hasn't been as busy as last, but I have dance tonight. We haven't been able to work on our recital dances for a few weeks, beacuse my director has been sick and has all of our music! So, hopefully we will be able to work on that tonight.

Happy Groundhog Day everyone!!
Karen
2/2/05
Yay! I can't wait for the new game! Should be fun.
Whats new with the Hatgidakis' and Metcalfs?? We haven't heard from you for a while.
Gary
2/2/05
Okay, tune in tomorrow for a new "who said that?" quiz. Twenty more sound-bytes, this time all from movies. Some way easy, some not so easy.... Have fun!
Donna
2/2/05
No way could the groundhog see his shadow here today. I drove in to work and the fog was so thick I couldn't see but maybe 10 feet in front of you. I have never seen it so foggy. The commute took an extra half hour. It wasn't bad until I got to the Platte River. As I turned the corner to Gallup, I couldn't see the building. Good thing I've driven the route so many times, it would have been really scary otherwise.

Happy Groundhog Day, everyone!
Lindsey

Hey everybody, been kind of busy lately so I haven't been on for a while. Eh, I didn't do too bad, I actually just didn't fill in any of them. Last night at ballet we learned one of our dances for recital and this year the ballet is Sleeping Beauty. My studio usually does some really neat ballets. They have done like Secret Garden and Nightingale and stuff like that. But we learned one of our dances and I'm kind of nervous because I get lifted up in the dance by someone and I'm not sure how that will go but I'm sure it will be fun. I think this year I'll have 7 or 8 dances in the recital. I think I had 8 last year too. Ok well talk to everyone later, bye!
