Wow, I'm shocked that I got the most answers right. At least two of them were complete guesses. It was fun to play, I'll look forward to the next one. Not much else going on for us here. Figured our income taxes tonight. Won't have to think of how to spend the huge refund this year, just about broke even bewteen the state and federal. Oh well, better than having to pay.

Gary

Okay, I finally got the answers to the "who said that?" game up on the front page. I couldn't do it last night, I realized at the last minute, because all your answer sheets were here at my office. So I had to wait until this morning to put the results page up. I may leave this page up through tomorrow so everyone gets a chance to see it. Thanks for playing, everyone! I'll think I'll put another "who said that?" game up for this coming weekend, on Thursday probably.

And on this last day of the month, I just wanted to point out what a jam-packed thing this month's newsletter has been! New Years, Amanda in London, several snow days, Sean's first day of college, Anna's first day of drivers ed., Emily's debates in Ankeny, everybody taking their semester finals, Marsha's birthday, the Oscar nominations, Emily getting interviewed for "Nebraska Life," and nearly everybody getting sick and getter better!

Hey everybody! Its been pretty quiet on here lately, what has everyone been doing??
We haven't been up to too much either. I got my hair cut this afternoon, and I am also going to have it dyed a kinda dark blondish brown, I think it looks nice.
We got about an inch or so of snow last night, but its all melted off of the sidewalks now and its supposed to be pretty warm tomorrw, so it will be all wet and mushy and muddy tomorrow, I hate Winter!!
I have had a cold-type thing for a few days now, just a runny nose and a sore throat. Its not too bad, but not very fun!!
I really liked the movie clips game on the front page. We were thinking that if we decided to keep it going maybe one week we could have all like TV show clips or 50s movies or something like that. Just and idea...

Glad you liked the game! I like it too. I'll post the answers and the results tomorrow. Yeah, I think I could do "theme" games -- but the next one, which I'll put up later this week, will be just like this one. Good luck with it! --Gary

So far six people -- Amanda, Emily, Erika, Karen, Lindsey, and Marsha -- have sent in their answers to the "who said that?" quiz. No perfect scores yet! Though one of the previously-mentioned missed only three. If anyone else wants to play, get your answers in before Monday morning: That's when I'll post the answers and results.
Emily
1/27/05
Well, I sent in my answers too, I think I only knew like 9 of them!! But, it was fun.
Donna
1/27/05
I think that was me. I started filling them out but had to stop. I just got out of the website so I'm surprised it saved and sent to you.

That is weird. It shouldn't send until you click on the "send" button. (...or maybe hit "enter"? I'll experiment.) --Gary

Karen
1/27/05
Fun game, keep em coming..... However, I didn't have a clue on about 5 of them. Next I'll have to check out the Oscar picks. Almost time to head off to school, been a long week, will be glad to see Friday come. John, I can't believe you and I were both Summer!!
Gary
1/27/05
Hey, glad you're all enjoying the "who said that?" game. Like I said, I've got lots more -- we could play this game for a looong time! :-)

One small problem: Someone sent in a partially-complete answer this morning at about 8:15. Only the first four sound-bytes were answered (correctly!) and it was unsigned. If that was you, please try it again...? (I have gotten answers from Lindsey, Amanda, and Karen, so if you sent one in and are not one of those three, the partial-answer was from you!)

So far, the tough ones seem to be numbers three, five, seven, ten thirteen, fourteen, eighteen, and nineteen....

Amanda
1/27/05
The front page game was fun! Gary, do the usual rules apply, that if we think of something later or want to change our answer we just send it in?

Yes, feel free. Of course, I will know how bad your first answers were! :-) --Gary

Lindsey
1/27/05
I just sent in my answer for the new game on the front page. That's a really cool game, I like it! Keep 'em coming!
Emily
1/26/05
Well, I just sent in my Oscar choices, not sure how well I did on them, I still haven't seen many of them!
I was baliff at the Teen Court session last night. I liked doing it, I don't think it is very boring. Being a Juror is proably the most boring one. There was a reporter there from "Nebraska Life" magazine, and he interviewed me and 2 other people and took a bunch of pictures for an article they are doing. I haven't seen this magazine before, but we will be in the next issue.
Well, I have to go get ready for dance now.
Lindsey
1/26/05
I just sent in my Oscar results and I really need to see some of those movies!! I think I've only seen a couple if even! I do want to see Ray and I wouldn't mind seeing a couple others too. I was thinking, who sees the documentaries? How can you vote on them? By name? Same with foreign films. Anyways, my best guesses!

Wow, that was fast! You're the first one in, Linz! If you do happen to see more movies and later want to change your votes, feel free -- up until the 20th. --Gary

Gary
1/26/05
Heads up, everyone! I'm starting a new game on the front page page tomorrow. Not a "Who Am I" but something new. If it's a hit, I can do lots more. Be sure to check in tomorrow -- should be fun!
Donna
1/25/05
Dear Olivia, why did you take Ceaser home? He was happy where he was and didn't want to leave. I know because he told me. He said it was more fun because he got to see me more. I really think you should bring him back. Please.
Donna
1/25/05
Emily, Anna, Linz: You make me tired just reading about all the stuff you've been doing.
Emily, I think a bailiff would be the most boring job on teen court.
Linz, congrats, your team always does a great job.
Anna, congrats on not being the worst bowler! You rock!
Gary
1/25/05
OK, the Oscar race is on! The nominees were just announced, and for best picture the nominees are The Aviator, Finding Neverland, Million Dollar Baby, Ray, and Sideways. Which means I pegged five for five! Woohoo! Grandma correctly predicted three, and Amanda two.

Chris Rock is the host this year. I like Chris Rock, but I don't automatically think "Oscars" when I think of him. We'll see. Makes me kind of nostalgic for the days when Johnny Carson used to host....

Samantha
1/24/05
Well my dad just got done taking the quiz and he is...Summer! Oh man we were laughing so much when we found out who my dad was. LOL!
Samantha
1/24/05
Hello all! Well we took the Napoleon Dynamite test, Mom is Uncle Rico, Anna is Pedro and I am Summer! We LOVE that movie too! Hey Gary, (I mean Kip) how is LaFawnduh doing?
Lindsey
1/24/05
Hey everybody! I had my first dance competition of the year and we did pretty good. We got top first in our division, we got a special award for the most entertaining or something and then we placed 6th overall in the whole thing and then our studio got an award for being the best studio so we all got a picture and it should be on the website soon. When it is I will post it!
Anna
1/24/05
Hey everyone! I havent been on forever. I have been So busy. On Saturday I went to the MOA at 7 am for a walk to support diabetes. Then on Sunday I was back at the mall for the exchange and then we went bowling and I didnt come in last!!! Then today the person who stayed with me (I had the person i stayed up there I was SO happy) went around school with me. Then during 3rd hour we got to leave and go downtown to show them around. We ate and then went back to our buliding for student council that is downtown. Then they left and then I went home. Then tomorrow I have my state writing test and it of one of those tests you have to pass by 12th grade to graduate. So I hope I do good.
Emily
1/24/05
Hey everybody! Mom and I have both been feeling better today, but now Erika is sick, she didn't go to school today either.
I have a fairly busy week coming up. I have a Mayor's Youth Commission meeting tonight, my first being on Exec. Council, I will be sworn in, for Adminstrative Services Director, then the Executive Council will have pictures taken. Then we will be having an orientation for the freshmen, and be interviewing them for committees.
On Tuesday I have a Teen Court session. I am a juror this time, so that shouldn't be too hard. Next month I will most likely be attorney or baliff.
Then we have dance Wednesday and Thursday. But, so far I don't think we have anything going for Friday yet.
What has everyone else been up to??
Gary
1/24/05

    Good luck, everybody!

    Emily
    1/23/05
Gary, you have to see Napoleon Dynamite, then you can decide if being Kip is good or not :) Next time we come down to Lincoln (or you guys come up here!!) we will have to have a Napoleon movie party!!! Erika says she will bring the tots. We all took the quiz too. I was tater tots, whatever that means! Mom was Summer Wheatley, and Erika was Trisha. & Actually that last newsletter was from both me and Erika.

    Fixed! --Gary

    Emily & Erika
    1/23/05
Now, we know that not everyone loves Napoleon Dynamite as much as we do, but for all the Napoleon lovers we found a website about the soundtrack, and you can listen to some of the dialogue and songs. We have been having alot of fun with it!

I haven't seen the movie yet, but have you seen this site? Turns out I'm a "Kip" -- is that good??? --Gary

    Lindsey
    1/22/05
I guess it's kind of late, but about two weeks ago we had a siding company come and they put on the seamless siding on our house and got done about last Tuesday. It looks really good and then the gutter people are coming to put them on sometime soon. But it looks really good!
    Emily
    1/22/05
Well, I don't think I've ever seen any of Fargo, so I wouldn't know if its any good or not! But, Napoleon is definetly one of my top favorite movies of all time!! We rented a few movies last night to watch, "Harold and Kumar go to White Castle" and "Starsky & Hutch" they were both okay, but not great. I didn't go to school on Friday. Mom and I both just haven't been feeling well, a head cold/throat thing, but I am feeling a lot better today.
    Lindsey
    1/21/05
Yeah I saw parts of Fargo and just didn't like it at all but I guess everyone has a difference of opinion on movies............ I can't BELIEVE you don't like Tommy Boy! Especially if you LOVED Napoleon Dynamite. I think Tommy Boy is one of my Top 5 Favorite Movies of all time!
    Gary
    1/21/05
Last call for anyone who wants to predict the Oscar nominations for Best Picture. At the moment, the winner will be either Amanda, Gary, Grandma, Emily, Erika, Karen, Lindsey, or Samantha because they're the only ones so far who have gone here and voted! Get your votes in by Monday morning, as that's when I will post our predictions. Can't win if you don't play....
    Amanda
    1/21/05
The test the taxi drivers take is referred to as "the knowledge" and they learn it by driving around on a "motorcycle" with a giant book attached to the handlebars.

This refers to today's crawl, in case you don't see it: "AMAZING FACT: Taxi drivers in London are required to pass a training test, a test which requires between two and four years of study. Of ten who start, eight or nine drop out before completion." --Gary

    Karen
    1/20/05
I LOVED Fargo too, one of the best movies I've ever seen. I also really, really liked Napoleon Dynamite.
    Amanda
    1/20/05
It's how Ryan & I feel about Fargo, we HATED that movie, but SOME people thought it was great...

Oooh, sorry, but that's another thing entirely. I'm afraid you're just wrong. That was an excellent movie! :-) --Gary

    Emily
    1/20/05
Yeah, I guess Napoleon just doesn't appeal to some people, Lindsey, kinda like how you all love Tommy Boy and we can't stand it!! :)
The snow and ice has been melting here too, and its been pretty nice, but I heard on the news this morning that we could get some more snow/sleet tomorrow!!!
We had an assembly at school today to choose our classes for next year already!! I'm not completely sure yet, but I will most likely be taking, Algebra 2, Chemistry, Language Comp., American Government, Debate, Art Appreciation, and Business and Personal Law first semester, and American Lit., Economics, Advanced Speech, Trigonometry, and Psychology second semester. But, we will sign up for them all on Monday, so I will decide for sure then.
I sent in my picks for Oscars also, it was hard to decide, I hadn't seen many. Gary, Oscar night won't be the same with you gone!!

Thanks, what a nice thing to say. :-) I am still trying to weasel out of this trip, but it's looking like I will have to go. I know there are plenty of people in this world who would think I need my head examined for trying to get out of a trip to a resort spa in Arizona, but there you have it.... As Homer Simpson said, "Weaseling out of things is important to learn. It's what separates us from the animals. Except the weasels." --Gary

    Gary
    1/20/05
It's just what they call "a difference of opinion," Lindsey (and Sam, and Erika, and Emily!). I remember one time a long time ago I went to a movie with three friends. Within the first five minutes I knew I hated this movie, and I was squirming in my seat for the next two hours just dying to get out of there. Finally it was over, and out on the sidewalk I was just about to open my mouth and say, "My GOD, what a stinker!" when all three of my friends started talking at once about how great it was! :-) If we all liked exactly the same things as everybody else, what a boring world this would be!
    Lindsey
    1/20/05
I just really don't know what the big deal is about Napoleon Dynamite. I mean it's OK, but I don't see why everyone is going crazy over it, because there's nothing really that stands out from it. If you haven't heard about the movie it's about a nerdy high school kid and he lives with his Grandma and 32 year old brother and just about him going to school and there really isn't a plot to it. There were a couple funny lines, but not anything different from the other high school movies they make.
    Gary
    1/20/05
And speaking of movies, there are a lot of action movies coming up this year, some of which we may be talking about next year at Oscar time; movies like...
  • Kingdom of Heaven, a big epic film about the Crusades during the 12th century. Directed by Ridley Scott (who did Gladiator) and stars Orlando Bloom, among others. Opens May 6, and already stirring up lots of interest.
  • Star Wars III, opens May 20. The Star Wars saga will come to an end (finally!) with this movie. The previous two Star Wars films had ...problems, so we'll see if this one can measure up to the original Star Wars trilogy from the '80s.
  • Mr. and Mrs. Smith starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. Okay, the plot is dumb: They're a married couple with a regular life, but both (secretly!) are freelance assassins, and neither knows about the other...until they are hired to kill each other. Happens every day, right? But this is directed by the guy who did the "Bourne" movies with Matt Damon (which are good), and this current movie too is already getting some good buzz. Opens June 10.
  • Batman Begins about the early days of Batman. Like Star Wars, this has had some unfortunate prequels, but the talk is that Batman Begins will get back to the darker "real" story of the comics and the original movie. Opens June 17.
  • War of the Worlds opens June 29, and I can't wait for this one! Steven Spielberg directing, and Tom Cruise and Miranda Otto starring, and the biggest film budget in history -- telling the story of a Martian invasion of earth. This could be huuuge. :-)
  • King Kong directed by Peter Jackson, opens December 14. If you've seen the countdown page, you already know I'm looking forward to this one. There have been a bunch of "Kong" remakes and spin-offs over the years, but none has had the respect for the 1933 original that Peter Jackson has. This one will be way cool....

    See you at the movies!

    Gary
    1/20/05
Yeah, I hate to miss the Oscars! I really would rather not go to this thing, even though it is a free trip to a resort in Arizona in the middle of winter....

I agree about the amazing number of movies in a year. So far, from the Oscar nominee-predictions that have come in, I have seen more movies than anybody -- and my number is only 29, slightly less than 11 percent. Who could see them all?!? You'd have to see more than five movies every week! (So far, by the way, I've received ballots from Amanda, Gary, Grandma, Emily, Erika, Karen, Lindsey, and Samantha. If you weren't named, go here!)

Snow and ice melting like gangbusters here in Lincoln too, even melting overnight. And no, I'm not paying any attention to the inauguration. I'm not watching one of those until we get a legally-elected president.

Amanda's London Week is actually two half-weeks with a weekend in between; it will go through next Tuesday.

    Karen
    1/20/05
Feels almost like a spring morning outside today. Lots of snow is melting and high to be in the 40's. I sent in my choices for the Oscars, always surprising to see how many movies there are in just one year. Gary, how will you manage to be out of town on Oscar night? Does look like nice very nice hotel though.... Amanda, we have been enjoying the pictures and notes about your trip, looking forward to the rest of the week. So is anyone going to watch the inauguration today? It's on now, but not much interest for me. Hatgidakis, how are all you doing??
    Emily
    1/19/05
Hey everybody! Erika and I got out at 1 today, for a teacher inservice or something. It has been alot warmer here the past few days it has gotten up to about 35 or 40 and the snow is starting to melt, hopefully we won't get anymore, unless it gives us a snow day :)
Lindsey, I can't believe you only gave Napoleon Dynamite a 6!! We all LOVE it! We were listening to the soundtrack in dance tonight, we were all quoting it, and we were trying to think of a way to put it into our routine, but I don't think it will work. For our jazz we are dancing to "Car Wash" from the Shark Tales soundtrack. We even had a Napoleon Dynamite skit at an assembly at school yesterday! Has anyone else seen it yet??
Amanda, your pictures look really nice, looks like you had a fun time in London!
    Lindsey
    1/19/05
I sent in my Oscar nominees and as I was looking through, there haven't been A LOT of great movies this year, maybe no one has to compete with LOTR anymore or something??
    Gary
    1/19/05
The Oscar nominees will be announced next Tuesday January 25, so I will post our predictions on Monday. Meaning, if you want to make your predictions you have to get them to me by Monday, January 24. So far, Amanda, Emily, Gary, and Grandma have sent in their predictions. Have you??
    Amanda
    1/18/05
Hey Gary, Scottsdale is where my best friend Amber moved to! She works at a hospital there... Small world...
    Gary
    1/18/05
Dang! I just learned that I'm going to miss the Oscars this year.... I'm attending a conference for a few days at the end of February, and the Oscars are on Sunday night, February 27. The good news is that the conference is in Scottsdale, Arizona, at the Kierland Resort & Spa, so the cloud has a silver lining...but still...!
    Amanda
    1/18/05
I put in my 5 choices... I watched the Golden Globes Sunday and I guess I need to check out Desperate Housewives. I have always meant to try, but I never remember come Sunday night. Tonight is the start of American Idol. We SO don't have time to be watching it 3 nights a week, but I bet it will be on our TV anyway. Especially at the beginning, we love watching some of the people try out. I go back to school today, ALREADY. This break went way tOo fast! I just have one class today. My classes this semester are: Criminal Justice System in the UK (we will just meet for a couple of weeks to wrap things up about our trip, and turn in some kind of paper), Spanish 4, Legal Aspects of Corrections, Criminal Law, Humanities: World Civilizations, Composition Skills (yes, I took Composition my freshman year, but thanks to the state of Texas every senior must take this class, just to make sure we do OK out there communicating in the real world) and lastly, Problems in Government & Politics, which is the self study class where I read 3 books & write a 5 page paper over each. Anyhow! We filed our taxes last night, I do it online through Turbo Tax. I'm waiting to see if the IRS & NE IRS accepts them, which takes about 24 hours, and then they will process it. We are getting a bigger return than ever before. That's about all I know for now. Gary, does my UK montage start tomorrow?

Yes! I meant to announce it on the crawl, but forgot. I'll be putting Amanda's London photos (with her comments) right on the front page every day for the next week or so. New pictures every day, so check back each day to see them all! --Gary

    Gary
    1/18/05
Hey, the Oscars are right around the corner (end of February), so how about warming up by picking the nominees? There were 269 films released last year that are eligible for an Oscar; can you pick the five that the Academy voters will select? Give it a try!
    Ryan, Amanda, Tristen & Teghan

I am hosting people for an exchange program that is with student council. They are about 6 hours away and we went up there before thanksgiving. It is really far up north and now it is their turn to come here and see what it is like in the cities.
    Karen
    1/15/05
Amanda, we were shopping the sales at the mall yesterday and found a few things that we thought the girls might like. (we have both of their names this year for christmas)
    Amanda
    1/15/05
Erika~ Tristen says her favorite animal is a tiger, and her favorite color is purple. Teghan's favorite animal is a cat, and her favorite color is pink. Are we starting a Who Am I? :)
    Emily
    1/15/05
Hey everybody! We had a fun day yesterday. We went shopping all morning, and then we took Dad out for lunch, then we went shopping some more! We are thinking we will proably go back out to the mall this afternoon with Dad, but I don't think we are planning on doing much else.
Anna, what are you hosting the people for?
    Erika
    1/14/05
Hi amanda i was wondering what Teghan and Tristen's favorite animal and color is? ;)
    Lindsey
    1/14/05
I am done with finals for this semester! I just finished today and for the past three days I have gone in at 7:45 and like at about 11 so easy days. I have a 5 day weekend for semester break! Our new classes start next semester and so I'll be taking Geometry, Geography, Pottery, Spanish, Biology D, Business, and English D. So I'm excited! I also got to see the pictures, looks like you had a fun time Amanda! Bet you're glad to be back though, huh?
    Anna
    1/14/05
Hey everyone. Yeah it is really cold here. I heard that for us to have had a "snow day" today it would have to be -30. It was only -17. Man i was so mad. I have a 3 day weekend so I am happy about that. Then next week we dont have school on Friday. But then that weekend we are hosting the people that hosted us in Thief River Falls so that should be fun.
    Emily
    1/13/05
Donna, I will still do debate next year, but not anymore this year, since it is only a 1st semester class and there aren't any tournaments after state.
Art 2D is just one of the like regular art classes they have. They have 2D and 3D, in 2D we do more like drawing and painting and in 3D they do more like pottery and sculpting.
    Emily
    1/13/05
Hey everybody! Well, I had a pretty easy day today. Went in at 9:30 and left at 1, and I only had to take semesters for Spanish, since I went to State with debate. Mom and Erika had to go in all day, but no school for any of us tomorrow! We are thinking we will go to the mall for sidewalk sales tomorrow, if its not too cold. Its supposed to get down to around -10, with a wind chill of like 20 below!!! I Hate Winter!!!!!
I'm excited to start my new classes on Monday, I think Speech and Art should be fun, I haven't taken an art class for a few years, and I will have the same teacher for Speech that I have for debate so that should be good too. Erika is also happy to be starting new classes, mostly beacuse that means she will be done with FACS.
Gary, I like the crawl today, where is it from?

Check today's cool site. A little 4-year-old girl in Germany made up a song about a crocodile, and her parents recorded it and put it on their website. (Click on schnappi.original to hear it, or click here.) Then a radio station in Germany found the song and started playing it on the air. That song is now the #1 song in Germany! Today's crawl is a rough translation of the words to the song. A friend of mine knows someone in Germany, and they said everyone in the country is humming or whistling that song -- they can't get it out of their heads! :-) --Gary

    Donna
    1/13/05
I just got a sneak peak of the London pictures. They are really good!

Emily, will you still be doing debate after school even though you no longer take debate as a class? Your trip last weekend sure sounded fun. What is Art 2D?

Erika, there is no way you like hot sauce. I may need you to prove that. ;-)

Amanda has sent me a bunch of London photos with commentaries for the webpage, so what I think we'll do is put them right on the front page -- 5 or 6 a day -- and make it a "London Theme Week" (or longer!). Starting next week, probably after Marsha's birthday page. --Gary

    Emily
    1/12/05
I love the penguin movie on the front page! We were just saying how it reminds us of Cocoa and Nicky.
    Emily
    1/12/05
No snow day for us today either. It was COLD and a little icy, but not too bad. I think theres still some more of the storm coming our way, but don't think it will amount to much. I had my semester tests for Geometry, Bio 2 Lab, English, and History today, and tomorrow I just have ones for Debate and Spanish, and we get out at 1 and I don't have to go in until 9:30, so that shouldn't be too bad. Then we start new classes Monday. Most of my classes stay the same, but I'm moving my Geometry class and since Debate and my free period are only first semester, I am adding Art 2D, and Advanced Speech, so those should be good too.

No snow days for us, but we are in the frigid arctic weather, so it is good to just stay indoors. It was great to hear about Amanda's London Adventure! I would love to visit that city, Anna Quinlan wrote a book about her love of London and it's on my long list of books to read. I'm reading Bob Dylan's "Chronicles" now and loving it. Everyone is so busy now that by comparison I am a slug (and loving that too). Work has slowed down, so I am home more and catching up on overdue home projects.

No snow day for UN-L (or LPS). The streets weren't too bad this morning. But they are now saying the main part of the storm hasn't hit yet, and will be arriving later today.

Well, I'm taking a snow day today. The buses are running, but I decided to stay home. Omaha is already getting freezing rain. The buses took us home early yesterday and I'm betting they'll do it again today.

Yeah I like driving. My mom and teacher say I am really good and I am glad about that. I am not sure if he was a gym teacher, all I know is he taught at my school a couple years ago but retired. So now he teaches one on one driving as a part time job. The roads are kind of icy but mostly slushie. I have another one on Thursday and I am glad. Only 3 more after that then I am done!

Hey Gary whenever I go to Hu-Hot I get the garlic mixed up with burn your village Just so you know its RRREEEAAALLLLLLYYY Hot!!!

Whoa! <:-O Next time I'm up there or you're down here, we gotta go -- just so I can watch the steam come out of your ears!! :-) --Gary

    1/11/05
Gary, we have been going to HuHot forever!! We all love it, well Dad and I do, but we wouldn't recommend the "burn your village" sauce.
Grandma, I did have fun in Ankeny. Our hotel was pretty nice, it was pretty close to a lot of resturants and stuff, so we didn't have to stay in our rooms the whole time.
We are also expected to get some freezing rain/snow tonight and tomorrow, I'm hoping for a late start tomorrow, beacuse we have semesters and they've said that if we do have a late start all the tests will have to be shortened. But tomorrow I don't have to take first or second hour tests so that should be an easy day.
Anna, have fun in drivers ed. I agree with everyone, all drivers ed. teachers are wierd.

Yeah, after I wrote my note I looked at their map; and while there are no HuHots in Texas or Minnesota, there is one in Sioux City. I didn't try the "Burn Your Village" sauce, but I did add one dipper of "Mean Bean Garlic" to four dippers of "Black Thai Peanut" -- it was good! --Gary

Not officially a snow day here in Lincoln, but it is just beginning (here at 1:30) to get nasty. Freezing sleety stuff coming down making the streets slick and windshield-visibility a problem. Snow day tomorrow...? I just got back to my office from a drive across town, and I'm wishing I could have just driven straight home and stayed there. I went to lunch at the HuHot Mongolian Grill out near Gateway -- in the old ChiChi's building next to Panera Bread. Cool place! You take a bowl up to a cafeteria-type table, and load your bowl with raw ingredients (meats, Chinese noodles, vegetables, etc.), then ladle over it four or five dippersful of sauces (ginger, peanut, BBQ, hoisin, teriyaki, etc., ranging from mild to really spicy, and mixing and matching is okay), and then you walk over to this giant circular grill -- like a giant wok only flat, maybe six feet across, with a roaring fire under it -- and hand your bowl to one of the cooks. They put your ingredients on the grill, and three or four cooks are constantly circling the grill, stirring and flipping. When yours is done, they serve it up on a plate and you take it back to your table. It's one price, and you can go back as many times as you like. We had lots of fun, and even the really picky eaters in the crowd were happy as they got to choose exactly what they wanted.

I am not appreciating Snow days as much as you guys, I am in hibernation this month, and it is fine with me. Haven't seemed to be too perky since the flu. Feel fine but no energy. You young guys and all your activities are making me tired. Anna, how do you like driving? Do you go out on the icy streets? Emily, I would like to hear your debates, bet you had a fun trip to Ankeny, was your hotel nice? Dance and B.B. are the time consumer's for Liv and Linz. Erika, have you been back to volunteer at the museum? Heard you had a busy day.
Amanda, I am glad you are back home, but am really happy you got to go, your postings sounded like you had a great time. Tristen, congratulations on getting 100% on 100 problems!! Time to unload the dryer, I also have a house guest, Ceaser is here while Paul's are siding their house. We are 2 of a kind now, napping seems to be thing we are both best at. Keep warm! Sean is adjusting to being a college kid already, I believe!!
    Donna
    1/11/05
Welcome home Amanda! I can't wait to hear all about your trip. I bet T&t were really glad to see you.

Anna, is your driver's ed. teacher also a phys. ed. teacher? Driver's Ed. teachers are always weird and for some reason they're usually the gym teacher too.

We have freezing rain coming our way so I'm wondering if the busses will leave early today. I hope so. And I'm betting it'll be a work from home day tomorrow.

Amanda was sure tired last night, she fell asleep about 8:30. I came to bed at 10:30 and was trying to be quiet which is hard. She didn't even move!!!! We are all glad she is home. Unfortunately its back to the grindstone for school. We have to pick up our books today because classes start on the 15th for us. I heard there is an "Arctic Front" coming soon so we are going to have some cold weather. Its probably the same one that will bring snow to all! Anna, I think all driving instructors are weird. Its in the job description :)
    Karen
    1/11/05
Welcome back Amanda!! Sure that Ryan, Tristen and Teghan are glad to have you home again :) Anna, great to hear that you are starting your driving lessons. How is it to drive on the snow and ice?? Emily had a busy week-end, but had a good time. Not much sleep so she stayed home on Sunday, while Brent, Erika and I went to Newman Grove. Brent's sister Laura lives there and she had an 80th birthday party for Brent's Mom. Long day, so it was soooo nice to wake up to hear that there was a two hour late start for schools. It really wasn't bad at all, not sure why they decided to have a late start, but we didn't care. More nasty weather on it's way, so hopefully more time off.
    Anna
    1/10/05
Hey everyone. Yeah I still had school today of course. We had more of that heavy snow and it is sticking around. I started my driving lessons today with my instructor and it went well. Only 4 more classes and I have another one on Thursday. He is kind of a weird guy though. Glad to hear you got back safe Amanda!

Hello all. Just wanted to let everyone know that I got home safe & sound from London. I arrived at DFW today at about 3, by the time I came through customs and all that junk. I had 2 excited girls & Ryan to meet me at the gate, that was very nice! I had a great time, and would have loved to call everyone this evening, but I have been up for 22 hours, 10 of which was on the plane, I am tired to say the least! I am still on London time, I need a good nights rest!!
    Talk to everyone soon, cheerio!
    Emily
    1/10/05
It was very nice to be able to sleep in today. I'm glad we got the late start, but I'm not sure why we did. They said it was beacuse of ice, but there wasn't any. It must just be make up for last week!!
Tomorrow is the last day of classes for me for this semester, then I have finals Wednesday and Thursday, then no school Friday, and we start new classes on Monday.

I think you got the late start because your superintendent reads this newsletter, and he read Erika's note of the 7th! :-) --Gary

Hey everyone. It was kinda a busy weekend. I have finals in two weeks so not to far away. We have had pretty nice weather. We had some snow/rain today. It just melts went it hits the ground. So yeah still no snow days.
    Amanda

My last posting from London. I'm tired, and ready to go home. Dr. Moran said today, "if you are going home and you aren't exhausted, you did something wrong." Well, I guess I did it right, I'm so tired. Nigel, our guide, has one of those walking trackers, that tells you how many steps/miles you walk, and just today we walked nearly 4 or 5 miles. I wish I had that for the whole time I was here. I bet it was 40 miles, at least. Today we went to the town of Windsor, and first had lunch at a great pub, the best one yet. We had tomato soup as the starter, and the Sunday roast beef & yorkshire pudding, then for dessert, death by chocolate cake. It was SO good. Then we went to Windsor castle, it was a great tour. The castle is amazing. It has much better presence than Buckingham, I understand why all the royals prefer it. It is about 30 minutes outside of London, so Elizabeth spends most weekends there. We got to walk through the state rooms, and there were some rooms I have seen on a TV show before, like after the repairs were made to it after the fire in 1992. We also saw Queen Mary's (I think, I cant remember at the moment) doll house, which was amazing.. Then back to the hotel, and now I need to go pack, we leave EARLY! Right then, cheerio!

    1/9/05
Hey everybody! Well, I had a good time in Ankeny this weekend. We got to the hotel on Friday about 1, then we had 3 rounds at 4 that went to about 11:30. Then when we got back to the hotel, we finally found some place that was open to eat, and we ended up going to bed about 4, and had to be back to rounds at 7:30. Needless to say we were all VERY tired Saturday! Then on Saturday we had 2 more rounds, then the people that made finals had 5 more rounds for the rest of the day. The only people from my school to make finals was our top public forum team, so most of us just went with them and watched their rounds. They ended up getting 5th place overall, which was down from 2nd last year but still very good. We left Ankeny that night at about 7 and got home around 12. So, I'm still pretty tired from everything, and I have a lot of homework to finish from being gone, but it was a lot of fun!

Hey everybody. On New Years I went over to my new friend Shelby's house and spent the night. We stayed up till 1:30 in the morning. Then we woke up at about 8:00 A.M. Oh we also went in her hot tub and drank kids wine! Shelby also got a perakeet (bird) and it's name is Legales from Lord of the Rings. The color of the bird is blue. But one scary part was when we took him out of his cage and he flew over to the X-mas tree and that was where the cat was. It took us about 15 min to find him. But then we had him on a wire stick and he started to bob his head to the music of Good Charlotte (a rock band) which was in New York when the ball dropped!

They're pretty easy to set up, and not too pricey. I think you can get a basic cam in the $20 range. Plus, there's a program called NetMeeting (it's built right into Windows XP so many of us already have it) that basically acts like a video-phone. You can sit in front of your computer and talk to -- and see! -- anyone in the world. And since it's over the internet and not via your phone company, you can talk as long as you want whenever you want, for free. I've already got my cam set up; just waiting for others to join in! :-)
    Ryan
    1/7/05
I've thought of getting one of those webcams before but I don't know how they work and I have not worked with webpages before. I'll talk to Amanda it would be a great way for everyone to see the kids in action instead of just pictures.
    Gary
    1/7/05
Ryan, last week we were going to try to convince you to install a webcam in your place so we could all tune in and see how it was going with the two wild ones running around. :-)

    1/7/05
The wait is almost over. All we have is the weekend and Amanda will be back home. I think I did alright keeping up with the girls but the schedule and the checkbook was killer!!!! I would like to say kudos to Amanda for her organizational abilities. A lot of the time I take advantage of always having someone remind me of things and not worring about money. Well I talked to her today the same time she posted the message and I may be taking over the checkbook. I know that may be mundane for some people but for a college family it may be interesting!!! Anyway nice to see Sean finally got to go to his first day of school. "Big time college grad" (Tommy Boy). And Erika I think you may be in the same boat as Anna with the snow days. You just get more snow then everywhere else so people and schools are ready for it. In Texas they once closed school and campus because there was a 1/4 inch of snow!!!! Down here people aren't used to see it. Anyway have a good weekend everyone. I have to finish cleaning the house before Monday.
    Lindsey
    1/7/05
Wow it felt like a Monday today because after two Snow Days and then going back so it is weird thinking I won't have to go in tomorrow. Sioux City only has two built int snow days? LPS has 5 and they are so stingy about using them that we don't end up using all of them. When else are we going to?? Amanda, it sounds like you're getting to see a lot of interesting things. I wish I could've gone with you! I talked to Ryan, Tristen, and Teghan last night and Tristen was complaining how they didn't get snow days so we were talking about how we were going to ship her and Teghan in a box to Nebraska so they could see the snow and Tristen goes "but let's poke a few airholes and write FRAGILE on the box!" I have finals next week so I only go in 2 full days next week and then for 3 hours on Wed, Thurs, and Fri. Then we have semester break for three days so the next week I'll only go in for 2 days so I haven't been in school for a full week since like December 18th or something! Fine with me though!
    Erika
    1/7/05
    I am so happy its finally Friday I thought it would never come Because unlike some people I'm not going to mention any names got 3 to 4 snow days we didn't even get 1 even though we had at least 9 in. of snow and private schools in Sioux City had no school for at least 1 day. The "reason" is 1 superintendt is a dork and 2 is the superintendent said we don't want to use one of our 2 built in days (days that we would have off if we didn't have any snow days but if we did have a snow day we would go to school like normal) But we also don't want to go to school when its -6 degrees!!!!!!!!!!! );
How much snow did Lincoln get anyway?

I feel your pain, Erika. I've never understood why the schools are so stingy with snow days. I'm not sure how much snow we got, but I think it's about the same amount as you: 8 or 9 inches. (The webcams are working again (except for MPLS), so you can see Lincoln's snow looks just about the same as SC's snow.) Yet we got two snow days, and you guys got none. No fair! --Gary

Well today is my first day of school! The quarter actually started on Wednesday the 5th but it was cancelled due to the snow. My first day of school in over 5 years and it was cancelled!! I had my Intro to Sociology and Intercultural Communications from 8-9:20 and 9:30-10:50. They seemed o.k. The Intercul Commun. instructor talked about himself for about 40 minutes. I'm kinda nervous about how much time he will spend instructing the class work. I'll be heading back soon to go to my American History II class at 2:00. Then I'm done till Monday!! Thought I'd have another weekend without being a grease monkey (they are adding up now that the El Camino is near finished!) but what I thought was a weak battery in my truck is actually a bad starter. But that'll be an easy 20 minute fix.
No work till Tuesday! I think I'll like my new hours. Class M-W-F, Work Tuesdays and Thursdays. I might work a few hours on Sunday nights also.
Over the years my computer desk has been a catch all for everything, for the past few weeks I have been working on ways to get more desk space. (For doing homework!) I made a table, put up another shelf, and a shelf off of my desk. I'll send in some pictures soon! Well I'm off to class! I'm still getting used to saying that.

Hello all~ Friday just before 5 PM here. I just got back from Wandsworth Prison. It was interesting. The previous governor (warden) showed us around. Yesterday we went to Charing Cross Police Station, the busiest in the metropolitan, that was interesting. Got to see their BMW police cars, computer dispatch system (and there was a call on the screen from Buckingham Palace, no details though). Nigel was our guide for the day, that was nice, he told us stuff all day, he never stopped talking. We went to Sherlock Holmes pub for lunch, where I had bubbles and squeeks for the 1st course, and shepherd's pie for main. Then we went to Westminister Abbey & had about a 2 hour tour through there guided by Nigel. That was amazing! Never seen anything like it. And we prayed with them in the church, they do it every hour. We saw the houses of parliament, and 10 Downing street, though the Blairs live at 11 now. Trafalgar Square, St. Pauls church, New Scotland Yard (but just from the outside) and Buckingham Palace. I have to tell you, the first thing I thought when I saw Buckingham was, oh, thats it? Really, it didn't like grab you & say here I am the queen lives here. Other people felt the same way... Wierd... Anyhow, I better go, we are going to look for the Cheers bar tonight, so I need to eat and head out!

I know how you feel Anna! We usually get at least one snow day a year, but still theres always times when the weather is REALLY bad and every other school around us is off but we're not -- LIKE TODAY!!! Most of the roads were cleared, but it was still pretty slick in some spots, and it was soo cold. But, oh well, its over now. And I won't be there tomorrow!
Tomorrow we leave for State at 9 and we will get to Ankeny about 1, then rounds start at 4 and will go until about 8 or 9, then we have finals all day Saturday and will get home around 12 Saturday night. It should be fun.

    Gary
    1/6/05
I'm at work today, too. It's a snow day for Lincoln schools, but not the University. Which is OK. I'm still amazed we got yesterday! :-) All our parking lots and sidewalks here on campus have been neatly scraped, though there's almost no one here. (In my office of ten, there's me and two others -- and one of them just left for a doctor's appointment.) The main streets in Lincoln have been scraped and sanded (at least the ones I was on this morning), but the side streets are a mess. Those of you at home, enjoy another snow day!

    Karen
    1/6/05
Anna, don't feel too bad, we didn't get a day off either. We did get out two hours early yesterday, but no late start today. It is nasty cold and we have about 10 inches of snow. I really, really needed a day off or at least a late start :)

    Donna
    1/6/05
Can you believe another snow day? They cancelled the buses at 5:30 this AM. I'm so glad they did but was sure surprised. I've worked from home all week. I think we only had 4 or 5 days last winter when the buses were cancelled. This is the first storm of the season and I'm already at 4 days! Sorry, Anna. If only you lived here, you'd be off today too.

    Anna
    1/5/05
Hey everyone! That is NO fair. I have not had a snow in about 6 years and I am not kidding. I remember being in either the 4th or 5th grade. We have snow but it has a really ice shell over it. It is really cold here too. You guys are SO lucky.

    Lindsey
    1/5/05
Another snow day for us tomorrow! We just got done watching Troy (a GREAT movie by the way) and Livy came down saying she saw Lincoln Public was closed tomorrow. I went upstairs and looked outside and it is still snowing hard since about 1:00 like Gary said. We have a step coming up onto our front porch and you can't tell where it is from the sidewalk to the porch, that's how deep it is. It is really pretty though! Yeah Tristen, I'd love to hear what you have been doing and school is going. Amanda, hope you're still having a good time!

    Gary
    1/5/05
Wow, really coming down out there right now! After a lull this morning and early afternoon, the snow started up again around 3 (it's now 6:30), and from the weather map it looks like we've got several hours of snow to come. Maybe another snow day tomorrow...? Woohoo!

As long as you don't have to go anywhere, it's really beautiful. I stood out on my back porch just now, and the city is almost completely silent. No traffic noise. All I could hear was somebody's windchimes on the next block over, and the faint raspy sound of snow falling on snow. My poor car is totally buried, so even if tomorrow is not a snow day, it will be a "late start" for me. If so, I hope I have a better time of it than you had, Karen! :-)

    Karen
    1/5/05
What a lousy day for me!!! First I wake up this morning hoping (expecting) at least a late start, but no such luck. So I head out about 9:30 for school. I let the car warm up for about 10 minutes, but the windows were still frosted over. Thinking it would clear any minute I take off. I get to the main street and I am litterely looking out of a peek hole. So I go back home, call the school and say I will be late. Then I let the car warm up for another 10 minutes and it's better. I get to school about 10:15, and just get started when the principal announces that we will all be getting an early dismissal at 1:00!!! The roads are lousy! Slid most of the way home. Gary -- PLEASE I NEED A DOG :)

    Donna
    1/5/05
I'm wondering if we're going to get much snow this afternoon and tonight. I thought the weather man at noon said we'd have a total accumulation of up to 8 inches so maybe an additional 3-4 inches by midnight. I'm not complaining if that's all we get, but if that happens this storm is not one the of storms of the decade as they said on the radio this AM. It looks really pretty though.
I bet you guys in SC will get a snow day tomorrow.
Amanda, so glad to hear you're having a good time. Can't wait to hear all about it.
Tristen, why don't you write and tell us what you and your sister are doing while Mom's been gone?

    Lindsey
    1/5/05
Amanda I just looked at your itinerary and it said the prison and I thought "Oh that would be fun, wonder when she leaves?" and then you had already wrote on about it so I'm forgetting the time change! Anyways, have fun and hopefully there will be snow for you when you get back.

    Amanda
    1/5/05
You guys suck, I wanted snow when I was there!! Oh, but wait, I'm in London, that is SO much better than snow! Another good day today... Prison tour was interesting, much more lax than the US. The court was a high criminal court, they still wore the wigs!! Better go, got dinner...

    Emily
    1/5/05
I just saw on TV that SC is out early!! (even though we didn't go in at all :) So Mom will be home at noon, she shouldn't be so grumpy now! :)

    Emily
    1/5/05
Its still snowing pretty heavily here, and the wind is really blowing it all around, and it is COLD only 1 degree and a wind chill of about 16 below!! I think we are still in a winter storm warning until midnight tonight too. I really think school should have been cancelled, and I wouldn't be surprised if they get out early. Just about all of the schools around SC had late starts and most cancelled after that, and the ones that didn't are getting out early now, and if SC does get out then dance will be cancelled tonight too!! Everything is closed!! But, it is supposed to warm up after we get done with this storm, so that will be nice.
You guys in Lincoln are lucky!!! Our stupid superintendent NEVER cancels school!!!
Dad made it in to work this morning, but Mom had some trouble. The windows were so iced over she got about a block away and had to come back because she couldn't see anything.
I'm just hoping the weather isn't too bad for Friday and Saturday!

    Karen
    1/5/05
I am sooooo jealous!! No day off, no late start and it's still snowing!! Emily and Erika are home, I let them take the day off. I wouldn't be too surprised if it's an early release. I so wanted to have today off too!!!!! Everyone else enjoy your day off :)

Good for you, Emily and Erika! That's my philosophy: It's not just about getting snow days; sometimes ya gotta take a snow day! :-) --Gary
    Gary
    1/5/05
Yeah, it's not only a snow day here, but an extremely rare "University snow day." As I've whined about before in winters past, the University seldom declares a snow day -- even when the rest of the city does -- because so many of the students live right on campus and road travel is not an issue. But we got one today, because classes haven't started yet! Only five or six inches on the ground but, as Donna mentioned, more on the way later today.

    Donna
    1/5/05
Another snow day for me--that's 3 days in a row. I've got cabin fever. I'll start phase one of the shoveling soon. I think we've only got 3-5 inches so far so that won't be so bad. But another big storm coming this afternoon.
Amanda, really nice hearing from you. I talked to Ryan, Tristen, and Teghan Sunday. Tristen said she was doing okay but said she got "a little emotional" when she talked to her mom. Teghan just meowed like "Sarapina" with an occasional Wolfie bark that would crack her up.

    Emily
    1/5/05
Well, we have ice, blowing snow, and a wind chill of -14, and we are expected to get 4-8 more inches the rest of the day, but do we get a snow day, nope. So, I have to go get ready for school now. Have fun on your snow days everybody!

    Karen
    1/5/05
No fair!! It's 6 am in SC and still no word on a snow day for us, not even a late start!! Looks like we have maybe two inches so far. I will be soooo unhappy if we have to go in today!!!

    Ryan
    1/4/05
Everyone in Lincoln is lucky. I wish it would snow here. It has been dim and dreary for the last 3 days. Today it was dark and foggy. It kind of reminded me of London and England. I have talked to Amanda a couple of times and other than homesick she is having a blast. Hope everyone stays safe out in the snow. Amanda says she may have time to write into the newsletter today. Have fun in the snow!

    Gary
    1/4/05
It's official! As of 10:58 pm Tuesday night, Wednesday is a snow day!

    Anna
    1/4/05
Hey everyone. It is kind of nice to be back at school. I had a city-wide meeting today(thats when all the student councils get together in Minneapolis and talk about whats going on and stuff we can change) but one of the topics is that Made on MTV is coming here and going to two high schools here for auditions and they will choose someone and go to that school. Another was how a local TV show was wanting students to help out it. It is called Whats Up and they go around and do interviews with bands and actors and there's other stuff to do besides camera stuff. I signed up for. So I hope i get part in it some how.
    Get Better Gary!

Thanks. (And thanks, Emily!) I do feel much better. I'll be going to work tomorrow... unless it's a snow day, of course! :-) --Gary

Amanda--Sounds like your having fun! I can't wait to hear more! Lauren, glad your on the Christmas list this year! I'm hoping for a snow day tomorrow because EVERYWHERE around us is closed including Omaha, and they haven't announced Lincoln yet so if they don't I'll be mad! Omaha had Monday off too and we didn't. Donna you're lucky you didn't have to go in! It's snowing pretty good here. We are expected to get 9-12 inches by tomorrow night or so. SNOW DAY!!!!

Its still snowing here, and alot of schools are already canceling, so hopefully we will at least get a late start!!
Lauren, we'd love any Christmas suggestions, but we love Christmas shopping, so I'm sure we'll get some good ideas before then!

Hey everybody! Sounds like Amanda is having fun in London, be sure to keep us posted!
Hope everyone in Lincoln is having fun back at school and work today :) It started snowing here about 2, and is still coming down. The weather people have been saying we could get up to 12-18 inches! So, maybe no school for us tomorrow, or at least a late start.
I had my first Executive Council meeting last night and had elections for the 5 open positions. I ran for Administrative Services Director, and got that one, so that should be fun to do this year.
    Feel Better Gary!

I'm very happy to see that I'm on the X-mas list. Thank you for letting me be a part of the family Christmas list. And Emily, I'll be glad to give you ideas on what to get me. :) Well, Sean starts his first college quarter tomorrow at SCC. So, Ryan how are you doing without Amanda around?

Greetings from London!!! I found an internet cafe here... It is Tuesday 4:25 PM London time. I am having a good time so far. The flight went well, pretty uneventful, and I couldn't sleep. That made it long. We didn't do much the first day we were here, other than get to know our neighborhood, which is Kensington. We also rode the tubes, which is an experience in itself, and you do it a lot, you go everywhere on the tubes. The London Tower was great, just like everything else in this city its SO different just to be here, just the atmosphere and the feelings. The Jack the Ripper Walk was good too, however, reading Cornwell's book gave me some insight, so it wasn't as much of a learning experience for me as it might have been for others. The weather has been OK. I luckily am more used to cold than some of the others, so I feel OK. Everything is expensive here, EVERYTHING. You pay nearly $4 for a soft drink (because water aint free) then when you need to use the restroom that'll cost you too. We went today to Oxford and the court deal was pretty boring, but it was neat to see Oxford, it was a great town, had a very small town feel to it, very close knit. The whole city was university building after another. I see the Lamborghini dealership everyday on our way to the tube station. I was pretty homesick that first day, but I think a big part of it was sleep deprivation. Anyway, now that I know where this place is I will be back, so I will write more later. This place is actually reasonable, 1 pound for 30 minutes.

So is everyone in Lincoln back to work and school today? We had a light dusting of snow overnight and expecting 10 to 15 inches by tomorrow afternoon. So maybe a day off tomorrow :) Erika has today off, sick! Up most of the night last night, so she gets today off. Emily had her first Mayors Youth Executive meeting last night -- held elections, but I'll let her fill you in on the details.

Yeah, I think everyone is back to school/work -- except me, still. I took one more day off. The cold symptoms are definitely going away, but I've still got some congestion, headache, and almost no voice yet. I thought I might make it in today; even went outside last night and spent half an hour scraping off the thick coat of ice from my car windows. But this morning...no. --Gary

Back to work and school for all of us too. Hard to get back in the routine! Brent and the kids are already started and I am about to go in. Anna, your note sounded just like Erika, she was sure hoping that there wouldn't be school today. Most of the ice melted yesterday. Today is staying dry, just cold. Tomorrow we are to be getting lots of snow, maybe 6 to 10 inches, so possibly a late start at least:) Gary -- hope you are better soon :)

Thanks. This note was sent at 7:49 this morning, but I didn't receive it until 7:50 this evening... Sorry for the delay! --Gary

Well Anna, I got that snow day you were hoping for. There's a sheet of ice on everything this morning and the buses are cancelled. I wish I'd have checked earlier--I was all ready to go but finally heard on the radio at 6 that the roads were slick so I called the bus company and they'd made their decision to cancel the buses at 5:30. So I work from home today. They haven't cancelled Lincoln schools yet, but they should. It looks really bad out--and that creepy sound of the icy rain falling.

Must have been some email slowdown (ice related?) this morning. This note was written at 6:53 this morning, but I didn't receive it until 7:30 this evening... Same with Karen's note above. --Gary

Well, it's back to school this morning... Except for me, that is. That cold/flu thing I've had is on its way out and I feel better than I did last week, but for the past few days I have totally lost my voice. When I talk, all I can produce is this high-pitched wheeze that sounds like somebody sitting on a bath-toy. So I called in sick (and also sent an email in case they couldn't understand me!), and am staying home as long as my kleenex holds out -- at least one more day. A nasty-looking day, too, from the window: Everything coated with ice topped with a thin dusting of snow. Be careful out there!

P.S. I'm writing this at 8:40 in the morning, which means right now Amanda is in the Tower of London!

Gary, I'm sure we still will get you some Christmas stuff for next year. We had already been getting some things, so now I guess you will just get 2 presents!!

    Woohoo! :-) --Gary

Yeah the list looks good. Christmas seemed to go by really fast this year. School is tomorrow and it will seem weird to go back. The ice is only slush now I know were gonna have school.

The Christmas list looks good, Erika is very happy about buying for Teghan. I'm not sure what I will get for Lauren, since we don't know her very well, but I'm sure it will be fine. :)

Tell your mom she can still go ahead and get me something, even though she didn't get my name. :-) I would have changed the list before I posted it, but didn't want to mess up the careful work of the list-makers! --Gary

We had a pretty bad ice storm yesterday too. We were trying to order pizza last night, but no one was delivering beacuse of the weather.
We all go back tomorrow too. Not looking forward to it too much, but it will be good to get back to everything. And I don't have to go to school Friday so that should be fun.
When are we going to see the Christmas list for next year?

    Right now! --Gary

Hey everyone! My break is pretty much over. I am kind of glad to go back. I had a nice break and it will be weird to go back on Monday. I didn't get to much homework over break for a change so that made it even better. Today we had ice rain and some thunder and lightening. We still have a little green grass but a lot of ice. I hope it stays maybe we will finally have no school for the weather.

Hey everybody! We are starting to get some freezing rain and snow here, but we loved Napoleon Dynamite so much we had to go buy it this morning and we're watching it now.
Has anyone been thinking about doing next years Christmas list? Because, Mom was thinking she would like to have Gary's name this year.
Hope everyone had a happy new years eve!

I do have next year's Christmas list ready to go up, but haven't gotten around to posting it yet. Will soon. It was done scientifically, by a committee, at Grandma's on Christmas Day. --Gary

Thanks for the well wishes, I am excited. I packed last night, which was a chore, I tried to get it all to fit into 1 suitcase & 1 carry on. That's not an easy task. I stayed up last night til 2 and got up today at 7, in hopes that 5 hours sleep would make me tired enough to sleep on the plane...I will write updates if possible while I am there, and check in when I get back in the country!
