Ooops. I just now put up the Advent calendar and realized I forgot to upload (from my office computer) one part of it that makes the thing functional. (This has not been my best day...) So if when you read this the calendar doesn't respond to your clicks, check back! I'll have it fixed early Wednesday morning. Sorry!

I meant to write something here earlier today, but after having taken yesterday off, today was really busy at work. I didn't even get around to putting up the pictures of Grandma's deck that Lindsey sent in. (Will soon, promise!)

Yesterday was a fun day. Olivia also had the day off and was spending the day at Grandma's, so I went over there around lunch time. Livy was decorating Grandma's tree -- in the basement, right next to the fireplace -- and she did a great job! Then we had a bite of lunch, and we all three decided to go to the movies. So we drove downtown to the new Grand and saw "National Treasure" -- which was very good! (Which reminds me, I've got two reviews to write: "National Treasure" and "Alexander"). Also, Livy and I sneaked into "Spongebob Squarepants" for a few minutes (though Livy had already seen it).

Advent calendar starts tomorrow (Wednesday) -- so let me wish you all a Merry Christmas!

Its been pretty quiet on here lately. What has been going on with everyone?
We put up our Christmas tree today, but haven't gotten the decorations on yet.
It has really been starting to feel like winter here. The snow is pretty much all gone, but its been really cold!
Karen
11/29/04
We missed most of the snow, only about 1/2 inch by morning. How much did you get in Lincoln? Is school on time??

As far as I know school is on time. (I'm taking a day off today.) We got maybe a couple of inches, and most of the snow that fell on the streets and sidewalks melted right away. So it's a very well-behaved snow, staying to the lawns and trees. Looks nice! I haven't been out in it yet, but will be going out this afternoon. Maybe my attitude will change then... :-) --Gary

Hey everybody! We had a nice long weekend we put up Christmas decorations yeaterday, and will proably put up the tree next weekend. We went shopping today and got some more Christmas presents.
I have cheer tomorrow and I have my first basketball game on Thursday, it should be fun. I also have an interview on Thursday, for a job I applied for this summer. I also have another debate competition on Saturday in Okoboji, it should be fun bit were going to have to leave really early again.
Hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving!

Just back from the mall and snow is just beginning. Just a few flurries, but hoping for more. We did bake some cookies this afternoon -- Spritzs!!

Boy,is it ever snowing, Beautiful- from the inside, at least- no wind and big flakes beginning to pile up on my new deck rails. Anyone want to bake cookies?
Gary
11/28/04
Hey, it's snowing!

Woo-hoo! Very pretty out there.

Lindsey sent in a batch of photos of Grandma's new deck, but I have them on my work computer, not here at home. I'll have 'em up by Tuesday -- sorry about the delay...

We had a good Thanksgiving as well. My mom and her friend Jon, and Shelby came Wednesday night. We ate here at about 3 Thursday, turkey, ham & all the trimmings. We sat outside for awhile to let the girls run off their tryptophan, since it was about 65 degrees. Then we played cards. Shelby, Tristen & I went to Target at 6 AM Friday, then to Best Buy where we waited in line for an hour!!!! We went to the mall too. Then we watched that game... Actually, I only watched the first half, then I went to take a nap with Teghan. We went last night to Ft. Worth to go to Joe's Crab Shack, which is always fun.. Today we are just bumming, might go swimming at the hotel my mom stayed at. Tomorrow they are leaving at about 8, and we will be putting up our Christmas stuff. We will only get about 3 weeks to enjoy it since we are going to Lincoln on the 17th, so we need to get it up now. It SO doesn't feel like Christmas yet, but we must forge on... Ryan put up our outside lights last weekend, we may have gone a little overboard... I sent Gary some pictures that Sean sent me from his phone of the deck, can't wait to see it in person!

Sean's phone-cam pictures are up on the photos page now. Hopefully we can get some bigger and wider shots soon! -- Gary

We had a nice Thanksgiving also. Went to Hartington (the farm), most of Brent's family were there. Had a great dinner, then Brent and the "guys" went out to shoot blue rock and a few golf balls in the field. Erika and I contributed to the shopping frenzy yesterday. Didn't go until about 8, ended up at Walmart. It was surprising quiet. I think going two hours later made a big difference. We were even able to pick out a few things we were looking for. Emily's TV died last week and we were looking at the ads to get her a new one. It was about 10:30 by now and we noticed a good price on one, but only until 11. So Brent and I very quickly got to the store, found one and were in the checkout line by 10:55. We actually ended up getting a flat screen, 27 inch for the livingroom and letting Emily have and old 19 inch in her room, so it was an upgrade for everyone. Also got a little baking done yesterday. Emily had a friend come over in the afternoon. They had a school project to make a castle. They used about 5 bags of marshmallows and 2 cans of frosting. Looks good, but not sure how it will get to school.... Hoping to do some decorating today, may wait until next week to put up the tree. I think I need snow before it feels like its time put it up.

We had a very nice Thanksgiving at Grandma's house. Me, Donna, Sean, and Lauren were there for a big turkey dinner with all the trimmings -- plus lots of leftovers for tomorrow's game. (Which I hope won't ruin our appetites....) Paul and Lindsey and Olivia were over earlier in the day to put the final finishing touches on the deck, which included installation of black iron hand railings (crafted by Sean) for the steps. (All we need now is pictures!!) I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving day too!
Lindsey
11/25/04
Yea Amanda I heard about that too but then I thought again everyone must know it's a recording and if they really wanted to go shopping early in the morning, they would already have an alarm set but also I didn't see if cost to do that or not. Hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving!

Check this out. I saw the commercial last night and went to the website to see if it was really true. Kind of a good idea, marketing wise. Im guessing you will need to go to this site today (Thanksgiving Day) to see what I am talking about.

Tristen, I am glad you got your candy, enjoy them, but save some room for turkey :) Emily, Erika and I all get out of school today at 1:00, then no school until Monday. Looking forward to a long week-end. We are going to Brent's sister tomorrow, so I fixed our turkey dinner on Sunday. Planning to decorate for Christmas this afternoon and on Friday. Cold couple of days here, only 20 this morning and wind chill of 10.
Happy Thanksgiving!

Tristen
11/23/04
To Karen~
I got my peanut butter dreams today, thank you for ordering them for me. They taste like Reese's Peices! My mom can smell my breath!! My sister loves them. The end.

PS To Everyone else~ Happy Turkey Day!

Been kind of quiet, but can't say I've written anything either. I just got back from dance a few minutes ago. I have only have it Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday this week since Thanksgiving and since we have the day off after too. Nutcracker is coming along good. It should be fun. I think our first dance competition is in January but not sure where it's at. I know one of them will be in Kansas City this year so that will be fun going down there. So what's everyone doing for Thanksgiving?
Emily
11/22/04
Hey everybody! Well, we had a good weekend. Erika did well at her tap performance and she had fun with that. I had fun at my debate tournament too, I had 3 wins and 1 loss this time. The next one is in Okoboji on December 4th, I will proably be going to that one too.
Then on Sunday we got new cell phones! We still have the same number for the old one, just a new phone. My number is 223-3495, so now everybody can call me!!
Hope your computer is working better now Marsha!

Hope this gets through..... we have been having some major computer troubles and we wanted to wish Emily a belated Happy Birthday!!

Sounds like your trip to Lincoln was fun, we hope you had a great 16th birthday. John has been sick with bronchitis but today after about a week in bed, he is up and about. We bought Elf yesterday, what a fun and sweet movie! It was $15 at Target with $5 off coupon for buying some shampoo, pretty good deal. We started Christmas decorations this weekend since we were at home anyway and I am at work a lot this week. Anna had a lovely Volleyball banquet at school this week. Sam is enjoying her job at Noodles & Company. There are advantages to having a daughter or son in food service, the salads are fantastic. Lindsey, I hope that you will have a review and pictures of the Nutcracker. I do like that one, so Christmasy! Livi, you would make a good mouse in that one.... I have heard so many wonderful things about Mom's new deck! It sounds just beautiful. Erika, sounds like tap dance is a lot of fun. Amanda, London on Jan. 1 sounds amazing. It has taken me so long to get this off due to our computer!

Welcome back to the webpage! :-) Y'all better ask Santa for a new computer. Feel better, John! We're working on getting pictures of the deck up here soon. Watch this space! --Gary.

We did some Christmas shopping last night and Gary, we saw a game I wondered if you had seen yet, or if you owned it. I thought it might be fun to play at Christmas. It was Simpsons Jeopardy... Just wondered if you had it.

Don't have it; have seen it; been tempted to buy it! Looks way fun. :-) --Gary.

11/19/04
Hey everybody! I had an early out today at 12:30, but we proably won't have anymore for awhile. Its been cold and rainy here all day today. We rented Elf this afternoon and will proably watch it tonight.
Tomorrow I have another debate competition, but it shouldn't be as bad as the last one since it is in town. Erika also has her tap performance tomorrow. It should be fun.
Lindsey

How did you break the table? Who's house was it?
Grandma
11/19/04
Cool and rainy, but so far no snow, may be flurries early next week. Karen, I sent the pattern this morning, hope it didn't hold up the work on it. Been a busy week for me, I have such a full schedule!! Emily, did your little "felon" get time or did they get him off? You were the Prosecutor, weren't you? I really love this program you are in. Happy debating tomorrow. Carol and I were shopping on Wed. and I was summoned to help my neighbor's yesterday and I broke the glass top on a table and when I say the glass went everywhere, it really did. So things are always interesting.

Boy, just one more week until Thanksgiving, doesn't seem possible! What are everyones plans?? Been a busy week, guess we are still recovering from our Lincoln trip. Emily had a Mayor's Youth meeting on Monday, had to give a presentation to the Mayor of SC, State Rep., and the County Board Chairman on her trip to Des Moines. Then another meeting on Tuesday for Teen Ct. This time she was an attorney. Some kid stole a package of Skittles, so it didn't take too long. The 9 and 11 grades are taking tests this week so the others are getting an easy week. Out early on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. In fact, she didn't even go in on Tuesday, besides it being her birthday she only had two classes.
Saturday she has another all day debate, this time in SC. Erika is "performing" at the mall on Saturday also. Santa arrives and she will be part of the entertainment. Next Monday Emily is invited to ride on a float at the parade for Santa's arrivial (downtown) and the lighting of the Christmas lights. She is hoping to be one the first ones there so she gets to ride, rather than walk -- although the walkers get to hand out candy canes to the kids. She is also hoping for a warmer night.
Mom -- did I leave the pattern for Sam's hat and scarf in Lincoln? I can't find it here. But don't worry Sam -- I'm sure I can finish it without directions. Almost done (I think). Getting cooler and rainy for the last two days, maybe some light snow by this week-end. I am ready for some colder weather and a blanket of snow.
Gary, we got a letter in the mail yesterday -- wierd it was address to Gary Anderson -- 2900 Isabella -- from Disney World, must have put us on a mailing list :)

??? I do have a dim memory of putting someone on a Disney mailing list; but I think it was Zach, way back when he wanted to go to DisneyWorld. And I think I put Emily on some various mailing lists when she was little, so she would get some mail. But obviously they got the name wrong! --Gary

Hey, I got the word before it scrolled! So, Gary, did you tell the LONG story about a movie you DIDN'T see because you wanted to encourage others to write, or just to torture us? :)

So there was a free sneak preview of Oliver Stone's "Alexander" in Lincoln last night. It was open to University students, staff, and faculty -- if they picked up a ticket beforehand. I managed to get not one but three of the big blue tickets before they disappeared, and so last night Grandma, Donna, and I went to the new Mary Riepma Ross theatre to see this much-anticipated movie. Now, the fine print on the tickets said it was first come first served, and that holding a ticket did not guarantee you a seat. It also said "Come Early!" Which was okay -- just meant that they might have given away more blue tickets than they had seats for, right? So we got there about 30 minutes early. Saw a big line inside the building, and encountered several disgruntled people coming out; and we overheard the words "sold out." But we've got tickets, right? So I asked someone official inside, and he said you could only get in with a yellow ticket. I held up my blue ticket and he said you need the blue ticket to get a yellow ticket, and the yellow tickets were gone hours ago. So we didn't see "Alexander." Instead we drove over to The Green Gateau and had a snack. Me: Maryland Crab Cakes; Grandma: Baked Brie en Croute; Donna: Almond Shortbread with Raspberry Sauce and English Cream. Excellent!

Hey everybody! I got out early today, at about 2:15, but we had a short cheer practice/meeting so I still didn't get out of school until about 3. But, I dont have school tomorrow, beacuse freshmen and juniors have to take ITED tests. And Wednesday we only have 1st-4th periods and we get out at 12:30 on friday, so it should be an easy week for me!
We have a short mayors youth comission meeting tonight, then I and 4 other people will be talking to the mayor and a few of the Iowa senators about what we did in Des Moines.
Then tomorrow I have teen court, where I will get to be attorney since I missed last months.

Well I didn't watch the game because I was baby-sitting but I was told I didn't have to. Oh well, I didn't really expect us to win, just not be blown out by a 30-3 loss. But I heard Ross had another great game.

Hey everybody! We just got home, about 6. We all had a really fun time in Lincoln, it was good to see everyone again. And thanks again for all the birthday gifts! We took a lot of pictures this weekend too, I am going to down load them now, and I'll try to send them in soon.

We had a great time with Emily's pre-birthday party. The Nelsons arrived in Lincoln yesterday around 4, and Lindsey and Livy arrived at Grandma's shortly thereafter; pizza and brownie bites and birthday-cake-on-a-stick for the evening meal. Then Emily opened her gifts, folded them and put them in her wallet, and then we played some games in the evening. This morning, a French toast dish for breakfast, then Eyes of the World (or was it Eyeglasses World, Livy...?). Then Livy and Erika came to my place to look at some new computer games, while the others went to Kohl's and the Mall. A quick stop at PetCo for pet treats, then lunch at Grandma's (homemade chicken noodle soup and Tastees). Another trip to the Mall in the afternoon (for those of us who missed the first one), then a few more games in the afternoon, and the Nelsons got on the road around 3:30 to be home in time for tonight's Husker game. (Though I told Brent he didn't have to rush home -- he could have stayed here and hit himself in the head with a hammer for three hours...) Through this all, I should point out, Paul was slaving away on Grandma's deck, which is now 99.9% finished. Looks great! We all had an excellent time -- thanks for driving down, Nelsons!

Tristen lost another tooth. It was the other bottom middle tooth, she was biting into a piece of candy and it came out. She was very excited. She got another $3 from the tooth fairy. This morning I went and picked up trash for a mile with Mortar Board, it was a little chilly. My friend Amos found a tire and a coyote jaw with some teeth. Today Tristen has two soccer games, brr, I hope we all make it. Ryan has corned beef & cabbage on for the game, can't wait, for the corned beef that is...

I'm really tired of the whole ribbon phenomenon (curse you, Tony Orlando & Dawn!), so what better way to protest it than putting a ribbon on my car!

This is a scan of my first version (homemade), so it looks a little unpolished (next version will be better!). You see those "support our troops" ribbons on just about every car any more, and sometimes two or three on the same car; and they don't mean "support our troops" as much as they mean "worship our president." I originally wanted it to say just "Impeach Bush" -- but Donna recommended this much better version. So far, no one has taken a shot at me anyway!

Tristen, great report card!!

That picture of Teghan looks a lot like Amanda looked at her age :)
We are busy preparing for Lincoln. The plan is to leave here at 2, so hopefully we will be to Lincoln about 5. Bringing the cake (and brownie bites), and will pick up a couple of Papa Murphy's pizzas.
See you tomorrow......

We should definatley have an Elf night, I want to buy that movie too!

Store retail is expected to be $29.95 (though I imagine it will be cheaper in places). You can get it from Deepdiscountdvd.com for a mere $20.52 and shipping is free! They'll send it out by regular mail as soon as it's released. I've gotten many DVDs from them and they're great. Check it here. --Gary

I am definitely buying Elf as soon as it comes out! How about an Elf party one of the first nights everyone can get together after Amanda's get here? That will get us all in the Christmas spirit!

OK, for Christmas Tristen, Teghan & I are coming to Lincoln sometime Saturday December 18th. I would say before noon. We are leaving Friday night & driving half way, and I got us a room at the hotel on base at McConell Air Force Base in Wichita Kansas, which is exactly 1/2 the distance. Ryan is off work Tuesday December 22nd, and I don't know if he will leave that day or wait til Wednesday morning. Then we will probably leave to come home on December 29th or 30th at the absolute latest since I leave for London on the 1st!

Just an FYI for any of you wondering what's going on with Kerry after the voter fraud thing began to come to light. Kerry's brother, Cam Kerry (who worked on the campaign), has sent out an email which says in part:

I am grateful to the many people who have contacted me to express their deep concern about questions of miscounting, fraud, vote suppression, and other problems on election day, especially in Florida and Ohio. Their concern reflects how much people care about the outcome of this election. I want to you to know we are not ignoring it. Election protection lawyers are still on the job in Ohio and Florida and in DC making sure all the votes are counted accurately. I have been conferring with lawyers involved and have made them aware of the information and concerns people have given me. Even if the facts don't provide a basis to change the outcome, the information will inform the continuing effort to protect the integrity of our elections.

If you have specific factual information about voting problems that could be helpful to the lawyers doing their job, please send it to vri@dnc.org rather than to me.

The election protection effort has been important to me personally, and I am proud of the 17,000 lawyers around the country who helped. It's obvious that we have a way to go still, but their efforts helped make a difference. Their work goes on.

Apparently at this point the possible fraudulent votes to do not total enough to swing the results; but "the work goes on."

And one other thing: If you got depressed looking at the final electoral map covered in red, take a look at this site. He has re-drawn the states with their actual percentage of red (Republican) and blue (Democrat). Bush thinks he's got a "mandate," but all he's got is a little over 50%....

Amanda

Today I met with Texas State Representative David Farabee and spoke with him about the stolen election, JUST KIDDING, I did meet with him, but only to discuss an internship with his office for the spring semester... Anyhow, he is supposed to get back to me on whether or not I can do it at his office, so I will let you know. It was cool just going and meeting him. He was just re-elected, but was one of the Democratic representatives that "fled to Oklahoma" when the Republicans were redistricting because it was basically gerrymandering, actually, the Supreme Court just ruled and said that how they redistricted WAS illegal. Anyway, we didn't talk about that, just thought someone may have heard it on the news.

I do know that story, absolutely. I admire him and the others who walked out in protest! --Gary

I read your letter Gary and looked at some of the websites and if nothing else, I think Michael Moore will appreciate it, maybe you'll even get a letter back from him! Also Donna, I told you you would need a phone and so glad we got it then and not a month from then! Yea Amanda, I agree, if you don't have a cell phone now a days, then you're out of the loop but once you've had one, you can't go back!
Gary
11/9/04
Here's the note I sent to Michael Moore. The others are all similar, with different greetings, of course:

Mr. Moore:

First, a word of thanks for your courage, and for your willingness to take the hit for the rest of us.

No doubt you've already heard the following. But if not, could I urge you to keep your eye on this story? (I have no hope of it being otherwise followed up in the media -- they let Bush steal the first election, why not this one?) I am coming to believe that the 2004 election was stolen in a way that makes the 2000 election look almost legal. It looks as though Bush's vote total was inflated by means of altered voting machines.

Some sharp-eyed political observers noticed some odd things in the results of last week's election. First, the two all-important states of Ohio and Florida had both decided to go to touch-screen voting machines this year -- machines which I understand leave no paper trail. Next, the observers noticed that wherever these voting machines were used, they recorded vote totals for Bush five-percent higher than the exit polls showed. This percentage was uniform, and showed up only where the electronic machines were in use.

http://www.newstarget.com/002076.html

Further, some very odd voting patterns emerged in Florida. Here are a few examples:

**Madison County is 79.5% registered Democrat, with only 14.9% registered Republican. Yet Bush received 50% of that county's votes.
**Hamilton County is 78.9% registered Democrat, with only 14.9% registered Republican. Yet Bush received 55% of that county's votes.
**Franklin County is 77.3% registered Democrat, with only 15.9% registered Republican. Yet Bush received 58.5% of that county's votes.
**Liberty County is 88.3% registered Democrat, with only 7.9% registered Republican. Yet Bush received 63.7% of that county's votes.
**Calhoun County is 82.4% registered Democrat, with only 11.9% registered Republican. Yet Bush received 63.4% of that county's votes.
**Union County is 75.5% registered Democrat, with only 18.3% registered Republican. Yet Bush received 72.6% of that county's votes.
**Lafayette County is 82.8% registered Democrat, with only 13.2% registered Republican. Yet Bush received 73.9% of that county's votes.
**Holmes County is 72.7% registered Democrat, with only 21.3% registered Republican. Yet Bush received 77% of that county's votes.

http://www.truthisbetter.com/Florida_Election.htm

And this is after all the polling had been saying Florida was "too close to call." No pollsters caught these massive Democratic defections...? (Exit polls in Florida that day were running 51-49 in Kerry's favor.)

http://slate.com/Default.aspx?id=2109053&lMSID=FFE5A62B46734856AA79B2749488D58E

One final sinister element is that the President of Diebold (maker of the voting machines used in Ohio; perhaps Florida as well, though I'm not sure), promised last year to "deliver [Ohio's] electoral votes to the president."

http://money.cnn.com/2004/08/30/technology/election_diebold/?cnn=yes

The only place I've seen this discussed so far is in the forums on the Democratic Underground site:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/

and in this article from CommonDreams.org:

http://www.commondreams.org/headlines04/1106-30.htm

Thank you for looking at this long note. I hope that you, and others, can bring this subject to light.

Well, today I struck a blow (okay, a small one) for liberty: I wrote up everything I'd mentioned here over the past several days on the suspicious election results and sent letters to the three most outspoken and strongest Democrats we've got -- Molly Ivins, Michael Moore, and Jimmy Carter -- and also to several Democratic members of Congress. This apparent vote-tampering, if true, could have some serious and historic repercussions. Re-count, and inaugurate Kerry instead of Bush on January 6? Re-do the election? Impeach Bush? More likely, if anything, some lower-level fall guy may get a wrist-slapping. But if what appears to be is actually so, somebody fixed a Constitutional election allowing their party to seize control of the government of the United States.... Not a small thing. Keep your eyes and ears open for this story, ok? I don't really expect any national media to pick it up -- I mean, they let Bush steal the first election without a whimper, right? -- but you never know. For many many months, Watergate was a page-six story that everyone thought was being made up by one liberal Washington newspaper....

Congratulations, Erika, those are really good grades and I have no doubt you will be on the honor roll next time, you certainly didn't miss it by much. I'm proud of you, and sounds like this year is going really well for you!

Looking forward to seeing you guys this weekend. Another nice fall day, a bit windy, but not bad. The deck is almost done, Paul has done an outstanding job and I love the rope lights they put on the floor of the deck, gives a nice glow where it was really dark before. Donna, I am glad you listened to Linz and got your cell phone, in the nick of time I'm thinking. Proof positive that you needed it.

Hey, Donna, Ryan has been bugging me for clearance to replace the serpentine belt in my car for months, I guess he will appreciate your report, since now I will insist mine get changed. Oh, and I am SO glad you rejoined the cellular world, anyone who is not with us is only fooling themselves.. :)

I decided to drive to work today and left at 6:30 this morning. I just passed the Platte river and my car started making a very loud noise. I pulled over and couldn't have been there a minute when a state patrol saw me and stopped to help. He said it was the serpentine belt. Since I was halfway between Lincoln and Omaha I couldn't decide which way I should go. I called my insurance company since I have tow-in insurance. Then I called the station I go to in Omaha. Fortunately they were already open. They said they'd be able to work on it today and gave me the number of the tow truck they use. I was the first call for the tow truck so he was able to leave right away. With all that I had to deal with I was still able to get to work by 9. The tow charge was $112. But hopefully my insurance will cover all of it since I was on the interstate. But even the standard $50 will be nice.
But the best part was that I was able to make all of the calls from my cell phone that Lindsey insisted I buy just a little over a week ago. Perfect timing. Thank you, Lindsey! Oh and Lindsey, you'll be getting a nice 'thank you surprise' from me very soon!

Hey, I've been to today's cool site. That's where I heard--but never saw--a rattle snake. It's in the middle of nowhere--there is nothing for miles and miles--not even a gas station. But it's really a neat place to visit.

I liked Raising Helen!!! Anyways, not much going on here but has been pretty quiet on the webpage lately. I have dance again tonight, no homework though so that's good. Grandma's deck is getting more and more done. I know I haven't gotten pictures up yet but I was going to wait until it was done or close. But anyways, Dad put up the provacy fence and then we put up the rope lights too. Well talk to everyone later!

Yikes Amanda, how much do I owe for my order? I forgot I had to mail you a check. ;-)

Karen, take a picture for the project page when you're done. And/or bring it with you this weekend.

    11/8/04
Yipee, I have the afternoon off!! Parent teacher conferences so I got off at 1. We had a quiet week-end, watched a couple of bad movies (Raising Helen and Family Vacation). Looking forward to coming to Lincoln on Friday. Tristen, I mailed your check for the candy today -- should be at your house in a few days. Sam -- your box was by the back door when I got home from school today. I love the yarn, hope it turns out well. Thanks also for the treats :) I'll start on it soon.....

Today I was over at Grandma's most of the day and Donna came over and we did a lot of shopping today including a trip to Panera Bread where we bought way too much food! Then also we watched Shrek 2 also and the American Idol thing was funny, but not as good as the kareoke party on the first one I thought. Anyways I love Puss in Boots! My favorite character next to Donkey I think. Cute movie and I definatly decided I have to buy it. Ok well talk to everyone later!

I also heard about Arafat on the news this morning. They said he is on life support and in a coma, but they are not going to take him off life support or "declare" him dead until they have made burial arrangements.
    Amanda
    11/6/04
Oh, and doesn't it seem to anyone else that every time you see the news Arafat has worsened, like in just 12 hours time? My guess is he is already dead, they are just delaying the news until they get some sort of leader in place...
    Amanda
    11/6/04
Yes, Karen, we just got your email. For some reason there was a delay in a few emails, a delay of like 5 days! Anyhow, Tristen says she wants the Peanut Butter Dreams.. She appreciates it! Today we have a girl scout thing to go to, Juliette Low Birthday Bash. Juliette Low is the founder of Girl Scouts, so today the area Brownies will get together to celebrate her birthday. Then we are having some friends over tonight. Also, Tristen & I may go to Christmas Magic tomorrow, it is a big holiday deal, where vendors come sell stuff.. We have never been, but I always hear people talk about it. Her & I may go just to get in the mood, it's never too early for the Christmas mood, and we could use it after last week! We got Shrek 2 last night, LOVE IT! It was better in the theater, just with the theater effects, but this one has an American Idol thing at the end, complete with Simon! We are watching it this morning, for the 2nd time.. Anyhow, that's all I know for now.
    Karen
    11/6/04
I know I haven't written for a couple of days -- mostly because I have been too depressed about the whole election. Just doesn't seem to be any point in commenting on it....
On to better news, as Emily said we will coming to Lincoln on Friday. Hope to see you all then. I am getting off of school at 1 and hopefully Brent will be leaving early also (Emily and Erika get the whole day off). So we should be there about 5. Thought we could go ahead and do the "party" that night and leave all day Saturday for shopping.
Amanda -- did Tristen get my email? I will order nuts from her -- is there still time??
St Pauls had a "Fall Festival" yesterday afternoon. They do NOT let the kids celebrate (or even mention) Halloween, so they gave them this party. Lots of fun games -- everyone was to dress as their favorite olympic star. Easy afternoon for me.
Beautiful fall day yesterday got up to 70 and more to come today, but much colder and a slight chance of snow next week.

Hey everybody! My Mom was looking over all my Nutcracker rehearsals and practices and my first one starts tomorrow and then I have something every weekend until the performance not including the practices during the week once it gets closer. It should be a good performance, they said they got a bunch of new props and stuff. Not much other news. I agree it has been quiet but I just don't know what to write about.

Hey, sometimes it's just quiet. :-) --Gary

    11/5/04
Hey everybody! Well we have definitely decided that we will come to Lincoln on Friday, the 12th. We will leave late that afternoon and stay over and leave Saturday afternoon so we will be home in time for the game. See everybody then!!

Woo-hoo! See you guys next week! --Gary

And some more math I did, from the numbers on this site listing the Florida election results. I record here for posterity:

  • Madison County is 79.5% registered Democrat, with only 14.9% registered Republican. Yet Bush received 50% of that county's votes.
  • Hamilton County is 78.9% registered Democrat, with only 14.9% registered Republican. Yet Bush received 55% of that county's votes.
  • Liberty County is 88.3% registered Democrat, with only 7.9% registered Republican. Yet Bush received 63.7% of that county's votes.
  • Union County is 75.5% registered Democrat, with only 18.3% registered Republican. Yet Bush received 72.6% of that county's votes.
  • Lafayette County is 82.8% registered Democrat, with only 13.2% registered Republican. Yet Bush received 73.9% of that county's votes.

And to completely change gears, anybody seen the fall webcams today? A nice snow scene at Saranac Lake in New York!

    Gary
    11/5/04
Awfully quiet here! I'm assuming you're all as depressed as I am about the theft of yet another election.

The more I sit with this, the more furious I get that Kerry didn't put up a fight for the votes. I don't mean the campaign, where he did a great job; I mean the vote count, where he gave up waaaaay too soon. The numbers from the two key states -- Ohio and Florida -- are very suspicious. (And interestingly, both states decided to go to touch-screen balloting this year, which leaves no paper trail....) Anyway, to pick three counties from Florida:

  • Franklin County is 77.3% registered Democrat, with only 15.9% registered Republican. Yet Bush received 58.5% of that county's votes.
  • Holmes County is 72.7% registered Democrat, with only 21.3% registered Republican. Yet Bush received 77% of that county's votes.
  • Calhoun County is 82.4% registered Democrat, with only 11.9% registered Republican. Yet Bush received 63.4% of that county's votes.

And this is after all the polling had been saying Florida was "too close to call." Florida numbers are here. No way this election wasn't rigged.

Hey everyone!! I have not been on for a long time. I have been really busy with school it is finals this week. Thats really too bad about Kerry!! On Tuesday with my student council I got to leave school and help out with the election. We just held up signs and I was gonna go door knocking but we ran out of time. I hope everyone had a good Halloween. I did. Sam and I took Peter out and we had fun and i got a lot of candy.

You did good, Anna! Minnesota went for Kerry! :-) --Gary

I know that within a few days stories like this will be completely ignored (even though we are supposed to have a "liberal" press), but here's a disturbing story related to the thing Donna alluded to below. It will be called a crackpot conspiracy theory by the Republicans -- and as they're the ones who really control the press, that's as far as it will go.

Yeah, "bringing America together..." He does have a history of taking a marginal win as a landslide. After the 2000 "election," I remember seeing (in fact, I think I posted it on this webpage), Bush's invitation to his inaugural ball: It invited the recipient to celebrate this "triumph of democracy." Egad....

But! This too shall pass! Bush, and those who supported him, will reap what they sow. And even though it may feel like we're all alone out here, remember that there are 55.4 million others out there who voted against him just like we did. (In fact, more than 55.4 million, if you factor in voter fraud!)

I know that I haven't said to much on the website. But I feel like I just got beat up. Majority of the individuals I work with are big Bush supporters. Military type right? I was listening to the radio yesterday morning and a woman stated that she was a military member and voted for Bush because Kerry was going to pull out the troops! Well maybe I'm one of the intelligent types who ask myself "DO WE WANT TO BE AT WAR?" I have tried my hardest to keep my veiwpoints out of the work enviroment, but its tough. I can't imagine another 4 years of the same "dictatorship." If I'm not mistaken, Kerry wanted to increase the military by 40,000. Currently the military is in a recession. It is very easy to get out of the military. It doesn't add up. I keep telling myself and Amanda Oct 06. We're almost there!!!!!!
    Amanda

I don't know why the news people keep saying Bush faces the hard task of bringing America together. He won't. He didn't do it the first time. Unless you count capitalizing on the September 11th attacks, as WE THE PEOPLE united. He is giddy right now, thinking 2 things, "I can now get all my hard right ideas made into laws", and "I am FINALLY better than my DAD!" It all feels surreal. I knew Kerry wouldn't win, but I didn't think beyond that. Imagine, if you will, living in Texas during this. OH, and ALL of Wichita counties (the county we reside in) ballots must be recounted, for EVERY race. We still have NO winners for anything we voted on because the counting machines screwed up at 10:30 last night.
    Donna
    11/3/04
Take a look at this website. Then go to this paragraph:

"One thing that is very strange is how much the exit polls differed from the final results, especially in Ohio. Remember that Ohio uses Diebold voting machines in many areas. These machines have no paper trail. Early in the campaign, Diebold CEO Walden O'Dell, a GOP fundraiser, promised to deliver Ohio to Bush. He later regretted having said that."

Click on 'deliver Ohio to Bush.' There's a news article from last year about Diebold.

I wonder if Bush may have stolen the election again.

Well, he does have a history of that! Interesting article, thanks; I will keep my eye on this! --Gary

    Donna
    11/3/04
Can someone please explain why Kerry concedes before Ohio has declared a winner? I thought this would take days to figure out.

I suppose the official answer would be "save the country from anxiety," "time to move on," bla bla bla; but I'm sure the smart guys on the inside looked at the numbers and said they are just not going to add up. If there was any room for doubt, Kerry would still be hanging on. --Gary

    Donna
    11/3/04
It's not over yet. They will have to recount a lot of Ohio and all of the absentee ballots. Kerry could still win.

True! It ain't over til it's over... --Gary

What a depressing day! I was afraid that this would be the outcome, but was holding out hope. Even so many of our local results were defeated.

I know what you mean. We've got two nations now (Republicans on one side, and Americans on the other -- and no, that's not a typo: Republicans are not Americans) trying to live under one government; and unfortunately for us, the Republicans have seized the government. It wouldn't be so bad if our Republican masters would practice the art of compromise -- recognizing that the country is split down the middle and trying to chart a somewhat middle course. But no: they put their feet up on the desk and run the country like a dictatorship. Which -- with a Republican congress and a Republican Supreme Court -- it is.

Here's a little ray of sunshine, such as it is: For many of us, living through Richard Nixon's presidency was a lot like these past four years have been under Bush. In his fourth year in office, the Watergate break-in occurred, and we thought, "Okay, his crimes will catch up with him at last, and people will see him for what he is." Well, at the end of his fourth year he was re-elected in one of the biggest landslides in history: 520 electoral votes. And of course, we were all incredibly depressed. But! After the election, the Watergate story continued to reveal more and more about the Nixon White House and, several months into his second term, he was threatened with impeachment and chose to resign instead. Bush is a bigger criminal than Nixon ever was (given the choice, I'd take ten Nixons in a row instead of one Bush), and Bush's crimes will catch up with him.

Oh also, apologies for leaving the same front page up two days in a row. I forgot to make a new one yesterday! :-)

Um, I did't say that last newsletter.

Sorry, Donna did -- I put in the wrong name (now fixed)! --Gary

Anyway, I didnt vote for Bush!! I voted Kerry. I think Erika thought Nicole would vote for Nader beacuse, they both start an N.

I'm not sure what exactly I said to the girl I debated to make her cry. The judge did say I should have been kinder in CX, but I think mostly she was just upset that she didn't do very well.

    Donna
    11/2/04
Emily voted for Bush? Are you sure? But more importantly, why would Nicky vote for Nader?

Emily, pleeeeease tell me what you said to make the girl you debated cry.

Hi everybody Today at school people came to school to vote and when we walk by they were all like ohhhh their so cute AND they blocked the hallway so that I was late for 4 classes. Today Emily voted, I think she voted for bush. If I could vote I would vote 4 Kerry and Cocoa would vote for Kerry and Nicky would vote for Nader!!!!!!!! :) (:

I vote in a school, too, Erika. When I was waiting in line, a teacher came walking down the hall with her arms totally loaded with papers and plastic bags full of stuff and big long rolled-up things like maps. Another teacher shouted after her, "Do you need any help?" and she said, "No, I've got it!" And just then she dropped everything on the floor. :-) I helped her pick it up, so today I was a Teachers Assistant! --Gary

I voted in our mock election at school today. Kerry won!! Kerry got 57%, Bush got 36%, and Nader got 7%.

We got the date for out next debate tournament today also. It is Nov. 22, and it is at one of the high schools in town, so I wont have to get up at 4!! I think mom and dad are going to try to sit in on some of my rounds (anyone else who would want to is more than welcome :) But, hopefully I will do as well at this one as I did at the last one.

    Happy Election Day everybody!!

Your mock election is the best news I've heard today, Emily (so far!). I believe that reflects the under-30 vote, which in this election could make the difference (see this article on the MSNBC site). ...Oh hey, congratulations on making that girl cry! :-) --Gary

    11/2/04
Amanda, congrats on going to London. Give us the details please. Where will you go while you're there?

I'm really bummed you can't come home for Christmas sooner. How long will you be able to stay? Will you leave T&t here since you'll be going to London? ;-)
    I'm thinking that's a pretty good idea.

Oh my gosh, that picture of Tristen on the GS nut/candy order form is hilarious. That should help boost sales!

Tristen, I'll place an order, I just haven't done it yet. ;-)

A friend of mine who lives in Philadelphia called this morning. He got to his precinct at 6:15 to get in line (they open at 7) and it took him 2 hours to vote. He said there were at least a thousand in line and most around him said they were voting for Kerry. Another good sign, I hope.
    Amanda
    11/2/04
Yeah, wouldn't it be cool to have webcams of voting stations?

Especially this year, with the Republicans sending out "observers" to challenge peoples' voting credentials. They say it's to "ensure democracy" bla bla bla, but they're really hoping to intimidate turnout in predominantly black precincts. Which is where all their observers are going, no mistake -- you won't see any such "observers" in, say, Crawford, TX! The Democrats challenged this practice (I can't believe it's even legal) and the news reported yesterday that the courts agreed, and declared it illegal; but the Republicans pushed it to a higher court (circuit court) yesterday afternoon, and at 1:30 this morning the court overturned the ruling and said the "observers" could be present. Democrats, at that early morning hour, took it to the Supreme Court, and the ruling judge -- who probably resented being awakened -- said he didn't want to get involved. Bleah! The good news, to bring this back to the subject of cameras, is that Michael Moore has hired -- out of his own pocket -- several thousand video photographers to be in these polling places (mostly in Ohio) and photograph any voter harrassment that goes on. God bless Michael Moore! --Gary

    Gary
    11/2/04

I got there early and was the second one in line. (I wanted to be first so I could have said -- at 8:01 -- "early returns from my precinct showed Kerry with 100% of the vote," but no...) Anyhow, by the time I finished, the line was maybe 50 deep. Gonna be quite a day! :-)
    Karen
    11/2/04
Happy Election Day!! Looks like it will be a long and interesting day. Geo W was in town yesterday. A lot of the kids at school were leaving early to see him. Emily and Erika are out of school early today. Emily had a great time on Saturday. Did a good job on her first debate, the highlight for her was making the girl cry. She has another debate later this month, this time it will be in SC. So the day shouldn't be nearly as long and maybe we will be able to see her. Erika had a great day yesterday too, first her award, then news of another field trip. This time it's to the mall for lunch and a movie. Think that will be around Thanksgiving. Halloween was an all time record for us this year. Erika handed out the candy and stayed on the porch for 1 1/2 hours. It was non-stop kids at the door. Ended up with 430 by 7:30, we were out of candy and turned off the light. So I imagine we would have easily had 500 if we had the treats for them. Lindsey - Erika didn't go out trick or treating this year because she thought she was too old to go. Amanda I love the pictures - keep them coming :) The Arthur cookies looked so good, did the kids like them? VOTE!!

A chillier day today than we have had in months. Its about time if you ask me. Too bad it happened on election day. Maybe it will just keep the old hardline Republicans home... I already voted, but am glad I did. I don't have class today but I have a busy day. First I have to get my passport taken care of, since my trip to London is now officially in less than 2 months! I also am going to do my 4 hour observation at the Adult Probation office today. Then of course I will rush home to watch election coverage all night. I just sincerely hope we have an answer tonight. Tristen has only sold 3 items for her nut sales, from her teacher & from her dance teacher, she was feeling a bit depressed about that. We also found out we won't make it home for Lindsey's nutcracker performance. Ryan doesn't get Christmas break until December 22. Any pictures of the deck yet??
    Amanda
    11/2/04
    Congrats Erika!!

    Lindsey
    11/1/04
Today in school (and all throughout Lincoln) they had a student mock election and they had all the kids vote online and it had the president, Nebraska senator, should gambling in NE be legal, and should you have to be a native born US citizen to run for president. So I voted today and got my sticker. But I'm interested to find out the results.

    Karen
    11/1/04
Erika received a certificate at school today. She was one of about 10 to get a top Reading Point Achiever (she read more books than the other students). Then she also got an award for having the most accelerated reading points in sixth grade!

    Good job, Erika! --Gary

Same here, we had probably 50 people at the MOST and usually we have like a couple hundred at least. Yea and the weather was great. We were wondering if it was a school night thing or something. Erika--you didn't go trick-or-treating? I saw a bunch of people handing out candy, some were cute and others I had to wonder what they were. But fun night either way.
    Donna

Amanda, I sometimes have trouble sending personal emails from my work computer, so I wanted to let you know I just emailed a response to you about the Gallup questions you had. Let me know if you don't get it. We could maybe post it on the website if it doesn't go through.
    Grandma
    11/1/04
So much for Halloween, I had a couple pirates, skeleton and little brother, and 2 little girls, and that was all, the weather was especially nice so I don't know where they all were, I must be surrounded by non believers. Woke up to rain and thunder a couple times last night, and there is much needed rain of over an inch in the gauge this morning. This week should be cooler, in the 50's. The deck has railing on the east side now and is looking really good. Got three new mysteries at the library, Sat. so I'm set for a slow cool week.
    Gary
    11/1/04
I don't know -- I still stand by my prediction. Kerry may not pull in the 322 electoral votes I said he would back on October 11 (some of the states I gave him, like Hawaii and Arkansas, are wavering), but I do think it will be 270+ (even 300+), enough to win. I just don't think the popular vote is going to be as close, in the final showdown, as everyone thinks. (Barring voter fraud, of course, which is a real possibility....)

On that subject, John Dean -- one-time key figure in the Watergate thing and now a political commentator -- predicts that tomorrow we will see the "Perfect Electoral Storm," an election meltdown that Dean also called "a 21st Century Civil War." Or as Keith Olbermann said, "2004 could make 2000 look like an argument over a parking spot." The polls show the race as even closer than it was in 2000, but this time there are tens of thousands of lawyers involved; and election problems are already starting to surface in Florida and Ohio. Knock wood this doesn't happen, but it is sure primed to.

Tomorrow night is definitely going to be interesting!

    Donna
    11/1/04
Gallup says the election is too close to call--they're calling it a dead heat with each at 49% and Nader and all others at 1%. This is based on likely voters and voter turnout at 60%. Should be interesting.
    Gary
