Hey, we had big-time fun at Grandma's today. Amanda, Ryan, Tristen and Teghan came over, and Karen, Emily and Erika drove down from Sioux City. Thanks everybody! The Christmas Committee put together next year's Christmas list, so be sure to read that some time before next Christmas. And here are a few recent photos.

(I'm writing this at halftime -- so far, so good!)

Okay Frodo-fans, only four more days til our "Return of the King" excursion -- three-and-a-half hours of some of the best cinema you'll ever see. :-) I just read an interview with Peter Jackson, who promises that the extended version of ROTK will be nearly five hours long. Here's the quote: "It is different with the DVD version. People watch it at home. They can lay on the couch or spread the experience over two or three nights. That is the amazing thing with DVD. It gives a whole new dynamic and I can assure you that the DVD version of Return of the King will be longer than 4 hours and 50 min." Unless he releases it early (and why not, Pete??), it will be out around next Thanksgiving. More, more, more! :-)

12/22/03
Hey everyone. We are in Lincoln, not a bad drive we made good time. We are at Grandmas right now. Wrapped some presents and going to take her to the grocery store for Tuesday night dinner items. Marsha, we did get your box, sorry I never mentioned it on here. Tristen LOVES the snow town in a bottle. She wondered if we could throw it into the ocean. We did need snow. Saturday, when we did our Christmas it was 70!!!!! Not so bad here.

Marsha
12/21/03
Have a safe trip Metcalfs and congrats on your grades. I guess the box I sent never made it all the way to Texas (lousy postal system!) Anna got your box Amanda and Samantha got your box Lori...thank you all. Mostly I just have lots of food to buy before Christmas. Marie will be here and some of our neighbors are coming over. We just got home from an annual Christmas party and we got together with some friends last night, so I'm kind of ready for some quiet time. Olivia, it's great that you are on a basketball team! Anna is too! Good luck at your games.

Lindsey
12/21/03
Can't wait to see you guys~!

Amanda
12/21/03
Well, its 3:15 AM Sunday. We are up and getting ready. Hoping to leave by 4. There is nasty weather forecasted for OKC and Wichita Kansas on Monday so we are leaving a day early. We had our Christmas yesterday. It was a good one. More details later. Karen, the books Teghan got are so cute. And a lot of work. For the last 6 months or so she has played with Tristen's book you made her and Tristen always asks if we can change it to Teghan's name for her. Tristen got a "My Twinn" doll, and she named it Bailey and she loves it. Ryan got a PDA and he loves it, though it is unnamed as of yet. I got a bunch of CD's, which will come in handy during the drive today, and the Simpsons Hit & Run on Playstation 2. We played last night, most excellent. We are bringing it. Anyhow, the shower is free, so I must keep moving, see you all soon!!

Lindsey
12/20/03
Hey Amanda, I've seen Bruce Almighty. I'm good, I'm good, I'm gooood! Can't wait to see you guys! Thanks Grandma for the Birthday wish! I want to see pictures of Sam and Anna without their braces!

Grandma
12/20/03
Congratulations, Amanda and Ryan!! Are you competing with each other? Congratulations to Emily also, I want details!! Does this mean you will be going to Council meetings?? And we won't recognize Sam and Anna with their new smiles, 4 years is long enough to carry that extra weight! Now you can eat crunchy things for Christmas dinner. Anxious to see the Metcalf's, but I am afraid we won't have any snow left for you. Must be in the 50's.
A very belated Happy Birthday, Linz.

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ONE AND ALL!!

Karen
12/20/03
Congratulations to Ryan and Amanda on your grades. And congratulations to Emily - who was appointed to the Mayor's Youth Commission!

Wow, nothing but good news in the newsletter! :-) Way to go, everyone! --Gary

Amanda
12/19/03
We got our hard copy report cards today. Mine says "Dean's Honor Roll" I guess it's called something else at this school. Lat te da. Either way, I'm good, I'm good, I'm gooooood. (Bruce Almighty anyone, anyone??)

Lindsey
12/19/03
Woohoo! No school until Jan. 5th!

Karen
12/19/03
Yahoo, I am now officially off until Jan 5th. Fun day at preschool. Had a short program for everyone in the school and the parents. Then back to the classroom for presents and snacks. Good day!!

Amanda
12/19/03
Gary, we didn't figure you could wait. Actually Ryan wondered if you went to the midnight showing late Monday night. We drove around and looked at Christmas lights last night, Teghan thought everything was "coooolllll".

I would have gone to the first showing, but I waited too long and couldn't get tickets! :-) Actually I just barely squeaked in to the second showing on the second day. --Gary

Ryan
12/19/03
Oh man I cant wait. I told Amanda that I was going to go the night of the 16 at midnight to watch it. Take my uniform with me and go to work after the movie. That idea didnt make it very far!!! Amanda and me have been watching Fellowship of the Ring and planning on the Two Towers so that we have a fresh mind for the last. I'm really excited to make it on the road, hope to see everyone soon.

Also, I've got the Two Towers Extended Version, so before we all go we can buzz through it just to catch the new stuff (30-40 minutes worth!) you haven't seen. Some of the new stuff will really enhance your appreciation of the Return of the King. --Gary

Gary
12/18/03
Okay, don't hate me, but I ...just...couldn't...wait... I know there's a group of us going to LOTR:ROTK on the 27th, but that is still nine days away! You have to understand that I've been waiting for this movie for thirty-eight years!! So I went today; just got back. Oooh, baby.... I will not, of course, give anything away about it, but I will say this: Bring a hankie. (And yes, Ryan, I'm talkin' to you.) At the end of the movie there were grown men rushing for the exits so no one could see their teary faces. ...That is, I think that was happening -- I was the first one out. Now I can't wait til the 27th to see it again. :-)

Hey Hatgidakis's, thanks for the stuff you sent. (Thanks, Sam!) And Nelsons: great picture of Emily and Erika! :-)

Lindsey
12/18/03
Congratulations Amanda for making the Dean's List and Congrats to Ryan for a 4.0 GPA!

Amanda
12/18/03
Yeah, but we have a real Starbucks here, drive through and all, I figured if little ol' Wichita Falls had one, surely Lincoln would by now. We are hooked on Vanilla Lattes.

Amanda
12/18/03
Does Lincoln have a real Starbucks yet??

Nope. But isn't the coffee at Barnes & Noble from Starbucks? --Gary

Gary
12/17/03
Hey Amanda, thanks for the "Seabiscuit" tip! Just picked up a copy (+ book) at Wal-Mart for $13.88. Yeah, they may be driving the mom&pop stores out of business but, dang, that's an excellent deal!

Paul and Lori
12/17/03
Congratulations to Amanda on making the Deans List this semester.
Way to go!!

Amanda
12/17/03
Woohoo! Grades are out. I got 3 A's and a B!! (That B could have been an A, I was only 2 points away from it) That puts me back on the ol' dean's list. And, Ryan got an A in his computer programming class. 4.0 GPA for him starting out his college career!! Ah, its a good, good day here in Texas, this long sememster paid off.

Paul
12/16/03
Haven't seen Seabiscuit yet, Wal-mart sounds like a good deal! I will stop tomorrow, thanks.

Donna
12/16/03
Amanda, I made some fudge Sunday. We'll save some for you. It's good but not as good as Marsha's.

Amanda
12/16/03
Oh, and the fudge is NOTHING compared to homemade.

Amanda
12/16/03
I just went to Wal-Mart and for $15 and some odd change you can buy the Seabiscuit DVD with the book included. Now I will have to read the book before we watch it. I thought it was a good deal though.

Lindsey
12/16/03
Hey everybody. Had a good birthday yesterday. I got an outfit from American Eagle. Kind of a sweatsuit and the pants are like a velour material and a zippered jacket with it and it's an olive green kind of color and the tips of the sleeves, and the top of the pants and the pockets on the jacket are lined in a tan color. They are sooooo comfortable and I think that might be what I am wearing on Christmas! Then I got Lucky Brand perfume and then my cell phone was an early gift. Also from my parent's friends I got a photo album thing and then from Sean and Lauren I got some Hollister perfume. Then I got a bracelet from Donna a little earlier :) That we need to get the "Z" fixed. Then from my other Grandma and Grandpa I got the first season of Friends and so my collection starts! Thanks Hatgidakis's for the money too. Thanks everybody for the gifts! Had a good birthday. Then I got to choose where we went out to eat so Dad, Mom, Olivia, Me, Sean, and Lauren went to a new restaurant out at Southpointe called Whiskey Creek. That was pretty good. Kind of Famous Daves type place and they had the peanuts where you could eat them and throw the shells on the floor and stuff. It was pretty good. Welll I better go see everyone later! Bye.

Amanda
12/16/03
I just whipped up some cheater fudge. Eagle Brand had a box for $3 or $4 with all the contents you need (even a little paper pan) to make a nice square of fudge. We will see how it turns out. I got it because I haven't had time to make anything, but was craving fudge and caramels. In the box they have a little recipe book for things made with Eagle Brand stuff and MAN some of them look good! Brownie raspberry bars, maple pumpkin cheesecake mmm... I made some Pineapple Pecan cookies last night and took them into Tristen's school for the teachers, lots of parents did that today. I went and had lunch with Tristen and got my ear talked off by all her friends. They told me their snowman door was the best door in the school! That's about all I know for now!

Karen
12/16/03
Snow day for us (well a two hour late start). All day yesterday there was a steady drizzle, then about 5 it got cold enough to turn to sleet and finally snow. Got about 2 inches, but the wind is nasty. So everyone can sleep in this morning :)

Amanda
12/15/03
Anna I shipped you a box today. I hope you get it by the end of the week!! I pretty much finished shopping today. Glad that's done!

Lindsey
12/15/03
Hey everybody--Thanks for the birthday wishes! Haven't opened my presents yet but my cell phone that I got was part of my birthday presents and stuff so just a few tonight. Not sure what we are doing. Might go out to eat in Lincoln or Omaha not sure yet depending on the weather. I will get the pictures as soon as they get back.
Everyone have a Merry Christmas!

Amanda
12/15/03
Check out this site. It's a place in Kansas City, Kansas that a friend of ours is going to stay at over the holidays. I think it looks like our next Anderson retreat spot. Waterpark in the lodge, restaurants, etc! Let's not plan on going tomorrow, but it looks GREAT so everyone think about it!

Yea we found out this morning about Saddam and were watching the news and I watched a little bit of Bush's address. Caught him like a rat!

Karen
12/14/03
I saw Saddam was captured when I got on the internet too. Been watching the news since. I figured he would never be found.

Gary
12/14/03
Good! Now maybe Bush can stop spending billions of dollars and hundreds of American lives in order to get his daddy's approval...?

Amanda
12/14/03
Did you hear? We freakin' got him! I got chills this morning when I opened up MSN and saw "Saddam is Captured."

12/13/03
Olivia, congratulations!! When is your first game? Hey, your box came today, thanks for sending it....

Amanda
12/13/03
Tristen had Christen spend the night last night. They had a good time. I wasn't here, I had to work 6-11:30, so I missed out on the festivities. Ryan made them the pasta grandma got Tristen for one of her gifts this month, christmas tree pasta in red and green and all three girls loved it from what I hear. They folded out the couch bed and slumbered there. I got home from work at about midnight and they were crashed out. Ryan had to go into work at 6 this morning and the girls had me awake at 7! I go back into work today from 12-6 and we are expected to be busy. We are doing some Christmas shopping after I get off work, we have got to get it shipped soon or it won't make it. Congrats Olivia for basketball. I think 21 is a great number, stick with it. Only 2 digits off of MJ (23). Lindsey how was the glamour shots?

Olivia Anderson
12/13/03
Guess What?................Whatever. I'm going to be on the basketball team!!!!!!!! My team is called THE LASERS! I know everyone thats on our team, and all of us go to KAHOA Elementry in 4th grade! On my jersey it's dark blue and white and says, 21.

Gary
12/12/03
We just added the 49th recipe to the recipes page -- who wants to make it 50? :-)

Gary
12/12/03
FYI, the new Metcalf email addresses have been updated on the contact page.

Paul
12/11/03
Boy, I didn't know Teghan liked banana bread so much? Hope she will share with her Dad. Hey Teghan "Heelllo"

Karen
12/11/03
Glad to hear that the boxes arrived. No more breads, baking cookies today. Want to take a couple of plates to work tomorrow. Yes, the snow is pretty to see it falling. But now it is just plain COLD. A high of 12 today, and all the pains of snow, slippery roads, dirty cars. Geez Marsha, what a long trip you had. Hope you got in some shopping while you were waiting. So is everyone in Lincoln back to work and school? How much snow did you end up getting?

I'm back, and was at work yesterday, though I took Tuesday off -- the day of the snow. (Sometimes ya gotta make your own snow day!) And I know school is back in session today. But the streets are still dangerous: On my bit of driving this morning, I saw four separate accidents -- no injuries, but lots of crumpled metal and broken glass. Yuck. --Gary

Gary
12/11/03
Sorry for the delay in getting recent notes up: email problem at work yesterday! Back to normal now though.

Ryan
12/10/03
All right, I just spent 10 minutes reading about how lovely the snow was. BAH HUMBUG!!!! The only thing I get to look forward to the Christmas holiday is wind and more wind. Man it's blowing outside. I got up this morning and the heater was still running. Drafty house maybe? Karens bread finally made it down to Texas and I'm in heaven. Amanda had me try a piece and its a hard decision Grama Jo's Banana Bread or Karens'. I'm going with both because its not going to last long. Thank you Karen.

PS: Teghan told me to pass the message that she would like to have 10 to 12 loaves of banana bread a maybe a few cranberry loaves for Christmas. Oh yeah, she also wanted to know if you have any other "berry breads" that may tempt her pallet.

Amanda
12/10/03
We just got Karen's box, thanks! The breads are great!

Lindsey
12/10/03
Yep a snow day for us today! Yeah I think in all we got about 9-10 inches. It was nice to sleep in and wake up and it's bright inside the room and you look out the window and see a bunch of snow outside your window. Very slick on the roads I hear though.

Amanda
12/10/03
Never mind, I see now, Monday, December 29th, Mastercard Alamo Bowl in good ol' San Antone' Texas....

Amanda
12/10/03
Do we have a bowl game this year? I can't keep up on all the current events at football land in Nebraska.

Amanda
12/10/03
Is is true? No school for Lincolnites? And 9 inches (at the airport anyway?)?!! Man you lucky, lucky dogs. Enjoy!!!

Donna
12/10/03
Well, I get another snow day. And so do Lindsey and Olivia! I was needing to get into work today and was all ready to leave when I thought I better check to be sure the buses aren't running late. Good thing I checked--they cancelled the buses completely. I was really surprised. We have high winds and blowing snow--plus they say the roads are really slick. So I had to pull the car back in the garage. I think I had close to 8 inches here--but had a lot of drifting so it's hard to tell.

Marsha
12/9/03

We are covered in snow! Wow, about 8 inches here at 11 p.m. and is supposed to snow all night with an additional 3. Beautiful with our lights and greenery outdoors. But, I had to pick up Sam at the MOA at 10:30, so I left at 8:30 and didn't get there till 9:l5, waited for her, left the MOA at 10:15 and got home just before 11. Whew! Stayed off the freeway and took the much longer but safer way home, very scenic around Lake Nokomis where you could only see about a half block through the snow and the sky was that beautiful December pink. I mailed boxes to Sioux City and Iowa Park today, Lincoln's will be mailed out tomorrow (I can only carry so much at once!) The girls are hoping for a snow day, but the crack road crews will have everything open by school time. We are so gyped for snow days.

Lindsey
12/9/03

Man loving all the snow, about 6 inches and still falling! Hoping school will be cancelled tomorrow. It should've been today. It was so hard getting to and from school. School is never let out early for us because they figure everybody would have to call their parents and it was crazy after school with all the cars and kids trying to call and stuff. I wish you still lived here too Tristen. Well Amanda if we get too much snow when you're here, you might just get stranded in Nebraska! There's an unexpected lengthened vacation. Can't wait to see you guys. 16 days till Christmas and 6 days till my birthday!

Grandma
12/9/03

Still snowing heavily at 3, and is piling up. I do love these days as long as I can be inside. My electricity was off for about 45 minutes, just back on a few minutes ago. Made cinnamon rolls from the bread dough I planned for supper so I need to get them into the oven. No company coming for supper tonite. Amanda, it does perk up the Christmas spirit a little, but tomorrow when we have to dig out it may leave again. Stay warm, everyone.

I'm making chili! --Gary

Amanda
12/9/03

How is my Christmas spirit supposed to raise when the UNL webcam is down? Thats the better of the two!

And not only that, my internet connection was down for most of the afternoon. Sorry about the delay in getting these latest newsletter items posted! Campus webcam is working again, too. --Gary

Donna
12/9/03

I got up at 4:30 and was pretty upset to see no snow on the ground and figured it fizzled out. I had to wait for the news to come on at 5 and heard that snow was on its way. It's so hard to decide if you should stay home and run the risk of ridicule the next day at work for whimping out or go in and run the risk of getting stranded or in an accident. Sitting in those big buses on the drive home today with the snow didn't sound like a good idea, so I stayed home. Now the bus company decided they should take everybody back to Lincoln at noon today and the daycare just announced it's closing too. I am so glad I stayed home. It's a really pretty snow--when you don't have to be out in it. Up to 6 inches now possible.

Man, Tristen, I wish you still lived here too. ;-)

Karen
12/9/03

Sorry Amanda, but we are having the PERFECT snow today. Didn't get any over night, but about 10 this morning it started to fall. It's so pretty, and the best part is school is being dismissed two hours early. Oh, the girls did go back to school today -- so they will be happy....

Amanda
12/9/03

All right Lincolnites, YOU SUCK! I want that snow! I need it to get into the Christmas spirit, I'm not there yet. I am watching the webcams, and hoping for lots of snow while we are there in 13 days. I told Tristen this morning about the snow you were expecting and she said, "MAN! I wish we lived there still."

Marsha
12/8/03
Howdy! Karen, your box just arrived, thanks! The cranberry bread is delicious. I had the flu this weekend following John and Sam. Now all of us have had it, so I hope we're all healthy for the rest of the winter. I think Sioux City is the early winner for snowfall, ours has all melted and the lights and greenery outside needs a dusting. I'm doing some Christmas cooking today and hope to get boxes out this week. Amanda, the school door looks adorable.

Lindsey
12/8/03
Hey movie plans sound good to me. So who's all going? What are you going to do for Teghan's birthday, Amanda? Or do you know yet?

So far seven people are on board for the movie: me, you, Grandma, Donna, Amanda, Ryan, and Shelby. If we had two more we could make it a Fellowship! :-) --Gary

Gary
12/8/03
Plans for the "Return of the King" excursion are firming up! We're now looking at a matinee on Saturday, December 27. If that's a problem for any of the interested parties, please contact me. Otherwise, I will buy the tickets soon. Ticket price is, I think, $5.50 (with a $14.50 handling fee payable to the ticket purchaser). See you there!

Time Magazine loves ROTK, BTW; go here for a non-spoiler review.

What's that, you say? You want to see some actual footage from the movie? Well, how about ten minutes worth! A Scandinavian television station acquired (legally!) a ten-minute clip of cool scenes from "Return of the King," and that clip is now on the internet. That's 4.7% of the entire movie! :-) Unfortunately, you can't download it -- you have to view it as streaming video. Meaning the more people watching it at any given time, the worse the lag-time and quality will be. (I recommend viewing it late at night; worked fine for me last night!) This will really whet your appetite for the movie. Click here or here! If one link is slow or not working, try the other. It does work, but it can be frustrating if you get a lot of lag or "jerky" performance. It's worth the trouble though!

Karen
12/8/03
Amanda, nice snowman -- did you come up with the idea too? Kids should love it! Emily and Erika are still home sick today. Not much improvement this week-end. Hopefully they will both go back tomorrow. It looks like we are going to get lots more snow today. Just feels like it's about to start, may be up to 6 inches by morning.

Snow heading this way, too, I just heard: 1-4 inches by morning. --Gary

Amanda
12/7/03
I think after Christmas would be the best. But I'm not set to make final plans just yet, but I understand that you need to buy now.

That's cool. As it happens, I just now checked with the theater and learned it's not quite as tight as I was thinking. There are two theaters in town where you can buy advance tickets -- East Park and Southpointe -- but I think it's also being shown at the Edgewood with no pre-sold tickets. The guy I spoke with said he thought the first day's showings were all sold, but tickets are still available for later days. So, especially for an after-Christmas showing, tickets should be no problem at all. --Gary

Okay, I need your input in planning a Return of the King viewing. Would the evening of December 23rd work for everyone? (I'm talking Amanda, Ryan, Grandma, Donna, and Lindsey; and I think I heard Shelby wants to go too? -- if anyone else wants to be added to the list, please let me know!) I've got to buy the tix soon, as they are already on sale and going fast. Feedback, please! :-) We can always go after Christmas, too, if this date doesn't work out, though I don't know if I can last that long....

Hey everyone. Glad to hear Teghan and Ryan are feeling better. I know I had the flu too and had to stay home for school and I'm still trying to get over the flu and I have it for 2 weeks almost I think and it has been different things each day and it's just kind of like a rotation, one day it's my throat, the next it's my stomach! WHEN WILL THE FLU END! Wow 16 days already and you guys will be here. Can't wait! Is it on the countdown? Talk to everyone later.

More snow for us yesterday. It was a really pretty snow, started about 3 and kept up through the night, about 2 inches total. So we have a nice covering. Hey Metcalfs and Hatgidakis -- watch your mailboxes. I sent a package to you today -- hopefully it will be there by Tuesday.
Gary -- I took a look at the Canteen web site yesterday -- I don't think I had seen that before -- very interesting.
Erika and Emily are both home sick today -- Emily is passed out on the couch for the second day. Erika seems to be getting it -- sore throat and achy. Don't imagine we'll be doing much this week-end....

It has been a busy week, and the weekend and next week isn't looking much better, gotta love December, right? We will be in NE in 16 days, time is flying!

MoveOn.org, a great Democratic action group I have mentioned here several times, is doing an interesting thing: They're running a contest for the best 30-second TV spot that tells the truth about Bush. It's called "Bush in 30 Seconds", and if you check it out be sure to see the "All About George Bush" page for some sickening facts about our Thief Executive. MoveOn has already produced two TV spots. After running one of them in West Virginia, there was a 4% drop in support for Bush, so they will be running them in the key primary states soon. Through the magic of the internet, you can see the spots right here! Click on $87 Billion or Jobs. (They're about 4 megabytes each, so some of you will experience a longish load time.) Throw Out Bush in 2004!

A couple of TV notes, and one movie note:

In two weeks, on Tuesday the 16th, "Queer Eye" is doing a "straight guy reunion" show, where they go back to some (or all?) of the guys from the first batch of shows to see if they've followed through on all the QE advice. And next week, on Tuesday the 9th, the cast of "West Wing" is appearing on "Celebrity Poker" -- not a bad show, though if you're not a poker player it might be a bit dry.... And tonight on ABC at 9 pm ("Primetime") there's a look behind the scenes of "Return of the King."

Which leads to my movie note: If you want to be surprised by "Return of the King" -- and I highly recommend it! I envy you if you don't know the story yet! -- then be very careful not to read early reviews of the movie. I've seen a few already, and secrets are spilling out everywhere. So I guess I would say avoid all reviews until after you've seen the picture.

I haven't read "The DaVinci Code" yet either, though I have read the books that novel is based on: "Holy Blood, Holy Grail" and "The Messianic Legacy." Here's a website that sketches in that story.

Also, to Karen: re: your book review, here's a cool site from last June. Did you see it then?

Get well, Emily (and Teghan, who I hope is all over it by now). And everyone else, stay well -- Christmas is coming!

Well, the flu has hit Sioux City. Emily is home sick today. Been complaining that last couple of days and it hit her yesterday, doubt she will go to school tomorrow.

We got about 2 inches of snow Tuesday night and more to come today, beginning to look a little more like Christmas.

I haven't read the DaVinci Code yet, but it is on my list. I did watch the show on tv a couple of weeks ago, very interesting......

I'll try again, one of my letters got lost in transit I guess. GET WELL wishes to Teghan....hope you are all better by now (as well as for Ryan and Amanda, how stressful for you!) About all of our snow is gone but it is pretty windy and chilly. I'm looking forward to LOTR and The Last Samuri and Mona Lisa's Smile. I finished The DaVinci Code, anybody else read it? Sam loves her job at the MOA at the Hello Kitty store (it's called Sanrio, but it's all Hello Kitty stuff.) Do you like your jobs Amanda? We've been busy at work, but not crazy busy.

Ooops, that was my fault. Your previous message (12/1) did arrive and was posted here, but yesterday when I removed the November posts to the "old news" section I guess I clipped your message. My apologies! It is now restored, below. --Gary

Brrrr. Cold and snowy-feeling out there this morning. The weather-types are saying rain and possibly snow for this evening.

A couple of items in the "Why Doesn't He Shut Up Already About The Lords of the Rings" Department: 1) New Line Cinema announced they are definitely going to do a "Hobbit" movie (which, in case anyone doesn't know, is sort of the prequel to LOTR). Peter Jackson, who directed the LOTR film trilogy, said he is "keen" to do it. 2) One of the people playing a cameo role in the 3rd film is the great-grandson of J.R.R. Tolkien himself, Royd Tolkien. 3) Several years ago, a lot of people thought New Line Cinema was crazy to invest $300 million in the LOTR films, an amount which would have bankrupted the studio if the films weren't successful. Well, so far the films have earned $4.7 billion, and the third film isn't even out yet. 4) The 3rd film opens on December 17, but last night there was a special premiere in Wellington, New Zealand, which was the first time the complete film has been seen by anyone -- including Peter Jackson. Some New Zealand movie critics attended, though they were asked not to publish any reviews for at least a week. Here is how one of those critics started his column this morning: "The Return of the King is ... sorry about this, but we're not allowed to tell you what we think of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King until next Tuesday. It was a stipulation by the film's distributors that to see the film, you weren't allowed to review it just yet. So we can't actually say whether it was the single most amazing cinema experience of our recent memory or not. Neither can we say in which bits we may or may not have got more than a little weepy, or whether we were emotionally affected at all. And we certainly couldn't even hint at which film is clearly the best in Peter Jackson's trilogy now that we've seen all three. We probably need a second look at The Return of the King to decide for sure. Or maybe a third or a fourth ... " Two more weeks! Can't wait! :-)

We all send GET WELL wishes to Teghan...so sorry she was sick! Kids bounce back pretty quick and she'll probably be running around like her old self soon. Karen, I tried to call you the past two weekends but your line was busy. Ours is so often busy with the computer and what not. We are all decorated for the holidays except for the tree which we will get a little closer to Christmas. We had some snow, but not much is on the ground now. I've been working quite a bit and haven't had much time for anything else! Keep us posted on Teghan, and Tristen, the Girl Scout candy is yummy.

Oh man Teghan you've gone through a lot these past couple weeks or so. I guess Amanda, Ryan, and Tristen you guys have too. Did you have to stay overnight at the hospital? Man I hope you get better soon!
Love the advent calendar! Merry Christmas everybody (although kind of early)

Poor Teghan, I hope she's feeling better. That sounds pretty serious.
I was surprised at how blonde her hair looked in the last picture you sent with her sitting on Sasha. It looks lighter than in other pictures of her. But don't tell Tristen I said that. ;-) Does she still wish she was blonde?

Hi everyone! We had a nice Thanksgiving week-end. Hard to go back to work and school today. We went to the farm on Thursday to be with all of Brent's family. Emily and Erika got to see the little kitty they rescued a few months ago. I think the cat actually remembered them, followed Erika EVERYWHERE she went. I went out on Friday at 6 AM to shop, and they were already out of stock!! So I didn't have very good luck. Saturday Erika went shopping at Santa's workshop and had great success at her shopping. Sunday we decorated the house. Like Amanda, I haven't gotten into the mood for Christmas yet.
Brent wasn't too surprised that Solich was fired. He had been thinking it was time to get rid of him for a year now (or at least when they lose a game). But still a crummy way to let him go -- and expensive!! Guess there won't be any xmas bonus for UNL employees :)
Teghan -- get better!! Poor little girl. We heard on the news that the flu was bad in Texas. Starting to circulate around here. Brent and I got our flu shots last month, so I hope we avoid it.
Hey Hatgidakis' -- Where are you? Haven't heard from you guys for awhile. I love the advent calendar -- we were able to get the music.

We can't seem to get into the Christmas mood around here. Yesterday after our company left we hung up the outside lights and decorations and the decorations in the house, just no tree yet, maybe next weekend. It just didn't feel right though doing all that in t-shirts. It is still 60-70 ish, and no sign of it getting lower anytime soon. I worked at Bath & Body Works on Friday and that was a mad house. Whew, I didn't think I would get through it. Then everyone at my house wanted to come to the mall when I got off, I got no relief! It was nice having my mom, Grandma Barber, Sean & Shelby here. It was a nice visit, the Thanksgiving dinner was nice, we watched a lot of movies, shopped a little and played cards. Ryan learned how to play canasta, and is now hooked! I don't think I told anyone who reads this, but Teghan has been sick since last Sunday, Monday was the worst and we took her to the ER that night, she had a slight case of pneumonia, and she was dehydrated that night. She went though 600 ML of IV fluid in an IV in her hand and an antibiotic to fight the lung infection. She also had a chest X-ray and a breathing treatment. It has taken her a LONG time to bounce back, yesterday, Sunday, a whole week later, she really started acting more Teghan like. She hadn't eaten a thing, NOTHING in 8 days. She lost weight, you can see it on her. As you can imagine it has been a LONG week. Ryan got sick in there for about 3 days too. I told Tristen she can't get sick, I don't know how her & I made it out unscathed. I guess we still aren't out of the woods yet. I just need to get through next Thursday, this week is my last week of classes, and next week is finals. Merry Christmas everyone??? :)

Thanks! --Gary

Lindsey (if you haven't heard already), Solich will NOT be coaching the upcoming bowl game. And listen to this quote from the Daily Nebraskan: "Solich is guaranteed the money remaining on his contract, which runs through June of 2006 and will amount to more than $786,000 in base pay. The Associated Press reported that it will cost the university at least $1.8 million to buy out Solich's contract." Ouch!

Changing the subject: The Advent Calendar went up today. Hope you like it! I couldn't get the crawl to work -- something to do with the snowflakes. It came down to a choice of either the crawl or the flakes. I chose the flakes! So no crawl until after Christmas. Also, let me know if the little "music notes" button doesn't work for you; I can make some changes that will fix it (I think!). And may I be the first to wish you all

a Merry Christmas!
