Hey Gary you should make some new fakes and if you need me and teghan can help!!
I would love to make some new fakes. The hard part is ideas. Start thinking up some ideas and we can do them next time you come to my office! --Gary

Here's a bonus AMAZING FACT: One hundred and eighty-one years ago today (which is to say, 1818) a patent was granted to a Philadelphia man for something we each use almost every day: the pencil eraser. Did it make the inventor rich? Probably not. The patent was revoked some years later when the patent office decided merely putting a piece of rubber on the end on a pencil did not constitute a new invention.

Gary, my office is never as fun as yours!! Looks like the 3 of you had a great day (sorry about the owie on your nose Teghan). Tristen we have a mummy or two in town here, and when I see them I think of you. Sunny is getting a much needed haircut tomorrow. It has returned to cold winter, but we are all not complaining too much because it is so much worse for our neighbors to the north in Fargo with the Red River flooding worse than ever this year....amazing fact, the Red River flows north. Donna, did you have a happy 29th birthday?

Hey, new pictures are up, from Tristen and Teghan's day in my office yesterday.
When I got to my office this morning, I found a note on my door which had gotten taped there last night without my seeing it:
Hi Gary. Good Morning. Get your work done! Love Teghan & Tristen
What a couple of sweethearts. :-) Except for The Chair Incident, we had a great time. Thanks for visiting, you two!
Amanda

How was lunch? Did you go to the trayless tray place? Is Gary getting work done? :-)
Lunch was delicious. Yes, we did go to the trayless tray place. No, Gary is not getting work done, but he said that was cool. Teghan was on a chair in Gary's office and it fell over and she got a scratch above her nose. It hurt at first and Teghan says it still hurts a little but we put ice on it and she's watching a Spongebob on the computer. --Tristen

Hi Mom, we're about to go to lunch. We watched some Wallace and Gromit shows and Spongebob, and we went for a walk and saw a lot of students. Bye, we will talk to you later.

Hey Gary I just sent in a review and got an error page that said something about not being registered with Windstream. Did you get it?
Yes, I got it. Thanks, Emily! I'm still finding pages I have to fix because of the windstream/windstream changeover. But it did arrive. First activity on that page in a long time. :-) Read it here! --Gary
Happy Birthday Anna!

Apologies if some of you are having trouble with the newsletter page (or other pages here). You might be getting a "page not found" error occasionally. I have to track down all the places where "windstream" occurs and replace them with "windstream" -- and I keep finding ones I missed. Bear with me!

3/19/09 This is amazing.
It reminds me of the two guys that raised a lion cub then released him and met again years later...
Those lion-guys were on TV yesterday, and gave an update on Christian the lion. They met the lion again about a year after that famous YouTube clip. The lion was much bigger; in fact, a wildlife expert there gave the opinion that Christian is now probably the largest lion in Kenya. But their meeting still had that same puppy-dog feeling as before. Even so, they said, they let the lion "set the agenda." He would walk into the camp in the evenings and hang out with them, and they had some great photos of the three of them sitting together. That was all years ago. Another lion expert in Kenya said he had seen Christian at a distance, once or twice after that last meeting. But for several years now there has been no sighting. They thought Christian had probably migrated to the north where the game is more plentiful. The two guys had written a book on Christian years ago, but they have just recently updated it with this latest stuff and it's on the stands now. Plus they also wrote a children's book about it. --Gary

Hey, I hope you all got tuned into our new website address. And if you're reading this, you must have. Sorry it happened without warning: Windstream (formerly windstream) sent out an email notifying customers of the change, but they sent it to my "windstream" email address, an address I never use. So I never got it.
For the record, our new URL is: http://home.windstream.net/ga55637
Our new double-secret contact page has a different address too, and I'll send everyone another email with that info.

We miss the daily trip to San Francisco Gary. That was enjoyable every day! 65 today!!!! WOW, hasn't been this warm since November. Love it.
Beautiful day here too, finally. Thanks for the kind words. SFO week was enjoyable for me too. --Gary

Yea, I need to get some DC pictures posted, I was thinking it'd be nice to do little stories like Gary & his San Fran week, but I don't have time to just email them out, let alone stories!!
What's everyones plans for St. Pats? I don't even think we'll get corned beef & cabbage, Tristen has dance til 630, then a band concert at 7. And Ryan has his Trig final that day. So, maybe next year.....
Nice weather!
Too bad you will miss the CB&C. As to the pictures, how about something like this: You bring the pix to Grandma's (like on a Saturday night when you can make it), we'll hook up a microphone to her computer, then do a slideshow. As the photos go by, you and Tristen and Teghan (and Ryan, if available!) can make comments which the microphone will record. I'll write up the comments, pair them up with the pix, and do a "Washington Week" with 'em. Deal? --Gary

Wow, T&t got to go to DC, get pictures with the president and now they meet an astronaut? You guys are having a great year!

Olivia, here's the site that has the schedule...
Click on expo schedule now online. Looks like Saturday night for the dancing horses. Tell us all about it if you decide to go.
(I called Olivia today to tell her about a horse show at the Lancaster Bldg. this weekend. It sounded like something she would love.)

Works for me, very cool. I remember being at a lot of those places pictured. I would love to go back. Fisherman's Wharf, Chinatown, Japanese Tea Garden...
Yeah, we did a great many of those things when you and Karen came to San Francisco. --Gary

Hey y'all, I'm trying a new thing on the front page today, so please let me know if it doesn't work for any of you. The little pictures, when clicked, should zoom out at you; you should be able to move the zoomed pictures by clicking and holding; and they should zoom back to small if you click on them. I'm trying this out for possible use on the next Advent calendar.

Ok, this cold weather has got to stop. Wind chill of -10 this morning???
And here's something worth watching, if you have 15 minutes to spare. It's a commencement speech given by one of the most influential persons of our century -- Steve Jobs. Along with Steve Wozniak, he invented the personal computer; and later in life he began Pixar Studios. An interesting guy, and an inspiring speech:

Winter never really left us, more sleet and snow. Ick. Great photos of T and t and Erika. I am starting to feel better, back to work for a short day on Monday and all day today. Gary, John and I are totally enjoying SF week, great stories, info and pictures. Mom, did you have to hop over the fence to get back inside?
Karen
3/10/09
We have winter again. Woke up to sleet and rain. Erika was dragging already so I let her stay home. Glad that I did! Roads were pretty slick, but a full day of school. Still getting some snow and now lots of cancellations.
Grandma
3/10/09
Erika, I think you look really pretty, about to go for a fun night! And, did you have fun? I am enjoying the tales of San Francisco, what an unusual city. Cold today and sort of freezing mist, when I carried the garbage cans in this a.m. the back gate was frozen shut. Marsha, how are you? Hope you feel better! Have Zach make you some soup.
Donna

Erika, you look so pretty. Love the shades. ;-) Do you wear your sunglasses at night? (Probably too young to know that song.)

Gary -- San Francisco week will be fun, look forward to seeing it. Busy week -- last week. Lutheran Schools week -- so something going on every day and the kids were wild by the end of the week. Hoping for a calmer week. Erika did go to a school dance on Saturday, had a great time. Marsha -- are you feeling better? We had two very nice days on Thursday and Friday, then Saturday it got cold and rainy. Ended up with about 2 inches snow before noon today. Winter is really hanging on this year.
Gary
3/7/09 Cool new picture today. Thanks, Teghan!
Gary
3/5/09
Wow, I hope everyone reading this is having as beautiful a spring day as those of us in Lincoln. Sunny and 65, birds tweeting everywhere, snow 99.9 percent gone.... Nice!
Hey, do you remember "San Francisco Week" on our site a while back? (Seems like just a few months ago to me, but in fact it was more than a year ago....) Anyway, I'm working on "Another San Francisco Week," to start Monday the 9th. It's about half done, so it just remains to be seen whether I can finish the last few days of it before it's time to put 'em up! :-) So at the very least it will be "Another Two or Three San Francisco Days," starting Monday. Hope you enjoy.

It is so great to have kids in the White House again. When Malia and Sasha got home from school today, they found this in the "back yard" (if that's what they call it at the White House):

I do love that picture! What other animal is smart enough to know how to take pictures?
I missed seeing you last night, Tristen. Can't wait to hear all about your trip. Teghan learned a lot while she was there.

Marsha & Sam, Ryan sent your cookies yesterday, and since he did it, I'm sure the address will be right & you'll get them soon. Actually, priority was cheaper, so he said 2 days. Let me know when you get them!

A while back, I mentioned here (I think...) that Will Ferrell was doing a Broadway show with himself as George Bush, titled You're Welcome America: A Final Night with George W. Bush. The show's a big hit, and here's an interesting review of it (from a Canadian reviewer). For those of us who can't make it to Broadway, the show will be broadcast on HBO in about two weeks. Yay!
Amanda
3/3/09
Grandma, Teg's gonna get dropped off there at about 4:30 or so by Steve, if you don't mind. I'll get off work, swing by my house & then head on over with your cookies & to get her. Her & I will stay til 6 ish or so, but no dinner for us.
Grandma
3/2/09
Glad you missed the weather in D.C., Metcalfs! I also really enjoyed the pictures and am looking forward to hearing about it. Sorry you can't make tomorrow night, but you have a great 'excuse.' Maybe Saturday? Sounds like we can have cookies for dessert! Did you see the little girl delivering her cookies on a very cold and WINDY day, when her dad opened the car door and the wind blew her envelope out of his lap and $1500 with it. They recovered about half.
Amanda
3/2/09
Never mind about dinner tomorrow night, it's Tracie's 30th birthday, so we'll be dining out with the Metcalfs. But we aren't going until 6:45 or so, so Teghan & I will still bring cookies over shortly before 6. Sound good?
Amanda
3/2/09
Gary, Donna & Grandma--cookies are in! We'll bring them tomorrow night to Tuesday night dinner, sound OK? Have your checkbooks ready! :) If you've got enough dinner, Grandma, we might just stay for that.
Marsha & Sam, we'll be mailing yours today or tomorrow. I'll send you an email with the total & our address.
Thanks!
Gary

Welcome back, Metcalfs, and thanks for the day-by-day photos of your trip. Can't wait to hear the details. I see on the news this morning that you just missed a major snowstorm: three inches on the ground in D.C. right now, and still snowing with lots more to come. Malia and Sasha will be getting a snow day, but you guys would have been stuck in the hotel if you were there. And if you had been travelling, you'd be stuck in an airport somewhere, with up to 80% of flights in the east cancelled.
